- In this vlog, we're going to the must see destination of Guatape Colombia, a town a few hours away from Medellin. It's full of stunning zocalos (murals) and bathed in color. But perhaps the biggest draw of Guatape is the giant rock that tourists love to climb to overlook the manmade lake that powers 30% of Colombia. El Peñón de Guatapé, the rock, has 740 steps leading up to the top where you can enjoy a mango michelada and see one of the best views in Colombia. No body blew the church , the original peñol town is under the reservoir. The church is where that cross is in the middle of the lake .

What guide did you use for all the places you went in medellin? How did you get from the aiport to your airbnb ?
We took one of the official taxis at the airport (they’re parked outside with a sign).

New viewer here and I liked your video. We are planning to go to Guatape in June and I was hoping to get some info from your vid, but am still left wondering... is there a specific place to catch the bus from Medellin? How much does the bus ride cost? Can tickets to go up el penol be purchased at the bottom, or do they need to be bought ahead of time? Do you recommend staying a night in Guatape or just a day trip? Any specific COVID protocols (temperature checks) before going up the rock?
I would love to hear the answers since you visit is so recent and it would be the most up to date info! Thank you.
I think there is a public bus that will take you but we ended up booking a tour leaving from Medellin. It was a really good value (about $30 USD) and included transportation, stop at the replica town, stop in Guatape, the boat ride, breakfast & lunch. The only thing we had to pay separately was the entrance fee to the rock. We paid for the entrance fee in cash when we arrived.
We enjoyed the day trip but after seeing some of the accommodations available and how pretty the scenery is it would have been cool to stay on the lake for a night. And/or be able to spend an evening in the beautiful town of Guatape.
They did the standard temperature check before entering the rock but I think that was it. Nothing major.

Sounds like the properties on the lake were pretty expensive but I’m sure the outskirts are pretty affordable
