I mean it all depends on the material, I like different flavors , I don’t want the penguin to be guardians of the galaxy, but I don’t want a the Batman toned guardians.
The penguin pilot was spectacular.. best hour of television I’ve seen since Succession… that scene with Cristin Milioti and the penguin at the dining table was intense
They both played it perfectly. The only thing is Sophia wasn't willing to let it go. She couldn't prove he did it. But knew he was smart enough too. She's the only one not really underestimating him.
DC can make some super terrible stuff but when they make something top tier it’s always so superior to anything Marvel could dream to make. It’s just facts
I love how Penguin still feels like a comic book character. The funny way he walks, his passion for the color purple, and always having It around him, on his fancy car or his clothes. How eccentric he is. Telling you, If he ends wearing a top hat and monocle at some point, It would still feel believable.
The Penguin is the comic book version of The Sopranos, like how Daredevil was the comic version of The Wire. I was surprised by how funny the show is. The Penguin complaining about his hamburger when he's about to dump a body is morbidly hilarious. It reminds me of the "leave the gun, take the cannoli" scene from The Godfather.
By 2030 we will have The batman ( haloween fire theme) The penguin The batman 2 ( winter snow theme) 2nd spinoff series The batman 3 This crime saga will be a cult classic in comic book genre.
I loved all the smaller moments, too. I like the shot where Penguin decided not to sit in the handicapped seat despite him having basically a club foot
The Penguin is exactly how to do a show a crime drama set in the batman universe, and its what so many want from Star Wars. Just do a gritty gangster show that just happens to have the names and attributes of batman characters. Just do a gritty bounty hunting show that happens to be in the Star Wars galaxy and stop over thinking it, less grand narrative and more grunt work. Just mix the Godfather with the Sopranos and the main character happens to be the Penguin and bam you've got a hit show, its really not that hard, yet some in Hollywood seem to make it impossible to pull off somehow. I wanted Gotham to be like a gritty police drama that was basically just Law & Order in Gotham but I was quickly disappointed by the show. As long as batman stays out of the show bar for a throw away line once in a blue moon, it should be fine. Save batman confrontations for feature films encouraging audiences to watch both the TV show and the Movie content. Less batman is more. If batman turns up constantly it undermines the bad guys story wise and makes the show a giant joke where the bad guys are just comedic caricatures, constantly running away like clowns all the time because the story demands they be in next weeks episode. If the show is going to do anything broader it should be to try and spin off another show with another villain in a later season similar to how Dick Wolf spins off shows like from the Law & Order Franchise or the Chicago franchise, the bat should be no where near any of these shows, save the bat for movies.
This is so great, as a huge fan of the Batman and other than Robert Pattinson as the titular vigilante, to me Colin Farrell’s Penguin was probably the second best performance in the film, and that’s not saying much at this point but, I think the way they do this series is phenomenal, and I agree with you John, the scene in the trailer where Oz is sitting in a chair casually and just pulls out the gun and shoots a guy and laughs hysterically afterwards until he realizes what he does and then yells “Oh Fu…..” and then the opening title credits of The Penguin pop up. I don’t really laugh at the use of the F Word just because, to me it usually feels so unnecessary however, with a guy trying to become the head of Gotham’s Crime Syndicate, and work his way up the ladder it makes sense he would drop that word on more than one occasion, and the first time it was partially dropped, got a chuckle out of me just the way it was executed. I’m tempted to go into everything I liked about the episode in spoiler detail in this post but, I don’t want to be that jackass that spoils the episode for people who haven’t had a chance to see it yet since it just came out last night.
I thought it was a pretty good first episode. I feel like the villain for the next Batman movie will be revealed on this show or it'll be the villain's origin, so I'm excited how it goes. I mean the whole point of this series is to lead into The Batman 2, so I would assume that's where they're going with it. I know they said Batman won't be in this series, but I hope they lied, so it'll be a cool surprise moment if he does happen to appear. Lol
Checking out reviews of "the Penguin". Happened upon yours and while I 'like' everything I view (my Southern sensibilities perhaps?) I don't 'subscribe' to just anyone. Subscribed. Love it, can't wait to see more reactions.
Right off the bat (pun intended kinda), It was a solid introduction to The Penguin, it was so good, captivating, thrilling, immersive, and fascinating that they are expanding the world of Gotham city beyond The Batman films (2022-). It gave off very strong scarface and Sopranos vibes, with some godfather thrown in there to spice up the crime family dynamic as Oz navigated the paranoid world of the criminal underworld, with Sofia Carmine (forgot the actor's name), killing it as the head of the Carmine crime family, but on her own terms.
I'm so excited for these next few months of TV. Once The Penguin finishes it'll be just about time for Silo season 2 to start in November, and also the Dune show, then once that's finished it'll be time for Severance season 2 in January 😁😁😁
Look at the sunrise scene was actually taken from Steinbeck mice and men; we’re Lenny tells Carl to look at flowers before he kills him. Walking dead also had a scene similar were carol tells a little girl too.
I agree I am watching Rings of Power season 2, Shogun, Only Murders in the Building, Monster "The Mendez Brothers," Agatha All Along and now Penguin. I am loving this!!
I have been looking forward to this and Oswald cobblepot/Penguin is one of my Batman villains next to Joker and Two-face and I love Colin Ferrell's portrayal of the character in The Batman. I couldn't agree more, this episode was awesome and the way he shot that guy gave me chills. Seriously Daredevil vibes and he kinda reminds me a little bit of Vincent D'Onofrio's portrayal of the Kingpin and I'm looking forward to seeing more episodes. Sofia Falcone was terrifying and I love the scene when Penguin is interacting with Salvatore Maroni who is perfectly cast by Clancy Brown.
This is so good, makes me think Disney Plus would’ve went ahead on the projects that they cancelled, Arkham asylum and Gotham police show, hbo knows, quality over quantity
both are honest reviews. one is just more positive than the other. you just perceive this more positive one as “honest” and more correct since it aligns with you’re preconceived notion in your mind where you already decided you like the show. you’re looking at reviews as moreso a way to justify your fandom, rather than exploring peoples opinions on something.
I just watched the first episode of "The Penguin", and I was surpirsed how much I enjoyed it. Very strong scarface, The Sopranos, and The Godfather trilogy vibes, but with the penguin as the central character. I liked the duo between Oz and Victor, as they navigated the gritty underworld of the decaying, dystopian landscape of Gotham.
I thought it was good, but I was not blown away like John and others were. Similarly, I thought "The Batman" was okay but not amazing, so maybe I'm just not fond of this particular take on the Batman mythos. That said, I agree that Farrell and Miloti are turning in excellent performances. I also feel the show works well enough that I expect to continue watching it. Who knows? Maybe it will surprise me and make me love it.
I’ve watched the Batman prolly 10 times…I’ve watched this episode twice…I cannot see Colin Farrell. Not his voice, anything. He completely loses himself in this role. It’s crazy
To me the scene where Vic tells Os "I am not a waste". You could tell be Os facial expression that he had someone tell him that before. They are basically the same person. Loved how they looked at the two handicap seats on the subway
I could tell Vic was digging deep to find a reason for Oz not to kill him. Obviously since he begged Oz to spare his life, and offered his services, but Vic definitely knows he’s in over his head, because he’s a good kid just trying to survive, and he knows he has to go all in to have a chance. Something tells me he’s not going to make it out alive, when I was watching a review, I heard Vic betrays Oz somehow while they were developing a father/son relationship and it hurts Oz. I have a feeling Oz is the only one surviving by the end, maybe with a few exceptions, but this show is going to get brutal.
Marvel movies make for entertaining viewing. Experiences on a grand scale reminiscent of a blockbuster film. DC films can make for critically acclaimed feats of cinema that have heart and make one feel a genuine connection with the characters due to the incredible performances by the actors.
I am looking forward to seeing this show (at least a bunch of first episodes) because in the past I liked that Gotham tv show for like a season and a half 😄 After that is started to get more and more silly / goofy ..and I prefered to watch rather DareDeviI on Netflix (back then). I gave up on the Gotham show at season 3 (episode 3 or 4). DareDeviI was indeed ,,dark and gritty'' (I wanted that for the Gotham tv show too) and maybe with some better acting (overall) too. I hope this Penguin show will be more on the DareDeviI side. (not fighting wise / action hero type of way / it is about the Penguin after all 😄 ..but rather with the atmosphere of this show and having a serious tone).
Cristin Milioti is Emmy worthy. One second on screen and you immediately go she's dangerous.
I just finished the episode and absolutely loved it!
I loved it. It was super dark and gritty, like a comics' show version of Sopranos. All the performances were great.
I’m glad that DC is seeing that there are still adults around who want to see movies and tv shows made for adults
If this is the kind of comic book show "adults" want to watch, I'll gladly pass.
@@mikepratt6481I’m sure blues clues still has re runs
I mean it all depends on the material, I like different flavors , I don’t want the penguin to be guardians of the galaxy, but I don’t want a the Batman toned guardians.
Just give Colin Farrell the Emmy now.
As soon as Sofia Falcone walks on screen for the first time, you know she is a PROBLEM. I’m in 100%
Also slightly different from the comics. The comics version was more of the muscle. The Penguin version seems to be a mix of crime boss and muscle.
The Penguin is a legit HBO show. I had high hopes and expectations but was still pleasantly surprised by the first episode. It was very good.
DC can make some super terrible stuff but when they make something top tier it’s always so superior to anything Marvel could dream to make. It’s just facts
Mostly agree but I personally think that daredevil is just as good as some of DCs best stuff
True
Yup. DC is hit or miss but when they hit, their highs are much higher than anything else in the genre. If only they were more consistent…
Yeah we don't gotta be tribalistic and compare bro. Just say it's good and move on lol
@@Tye0111I mean the Batman trilogy > any marvel movie
I love how Penguin still feels like a comic book character. The funny way he walks, his passion for the color purple, and always having It around him, on his fancy car or his clothes. Boba Fett should have been like this. I was expecting a full on gangster series, but set in the Star Wars universe. But I guess that's Disney for you.
Disney better take notes because The Penguin is nxt level
Give the fkin emmy to colin Farrell right now.
No questions should be asked
The Penguin is the comic book version of The Sopranos, like how Daredevil was the comic version of The Wire.

well said about Oz making Vic his lackey. You definitely do see that change in his eye when he hears the stutter if you pay attention.
Phenomenal Television!!! One of the best season premiers i have ever seen. Bravo HBO and DC Studios
If this show can pull off being The Sopranos within the Matt Reeves Batman Universe, we've got an all time great HBO Series.
By 2030 we will have
The batman ( haloween fire theme)
The penguin
The batman 2 ( winter snow theme)
2nd spinoff series
The batman 3
This crime saga will be a cult classic in comic book genre.
Just saw episode 1. This show looks beautiful. Already on board with the Oz and Vic tandem. Looking like a sure home run for DC.
I did not expect to like Sofia Falcone so much!
The place they get the slushies from is the gym from Rocky. Burgess Meredith OG Penguin and Mick in Rocky
Best DC Series ever
I loved all the smaller moments, too. I like the shot where Penguin decided not to sit in the handicapped seat despite him having basically a club foot
Incredible start to this show. Cannot wait for more!!
All the top, best writers work for HBO shows lol.
The twist in the end was masterfully executed
Fantastic show so far....I can't wait until the next episode.
I've watched the 1st episode like 4 times already.
I loved the first episode ! The acting, the atmosphere, the subtle music notes. This deff made me happy.
I’m excited to watch it, Collin Farrell’s Penguin was the best part of that Batman movie so I hope this is just as good
Yeah this is like Gotham Sopranos. It is amazing!
Collin fkn crushed this role soooo dope

Also...the Oz and Vic connection happened wayyyy before they even met. Remember the convo Oz had with Kid Falcone.
I thought it was a pretty good first episode. I feel like the villain for the next Batman movie will be revealed on this show or it'll be the villain's origin, so I'm excited how it goes. It’s actually a real good show I like how he seems like Tony soprano so I automatically like this show!
He’s not doe
You know a show is gonna be freaking good as soon as you see Clancy Brown
Caught me off guard. Very impressive. So original. Didn't miss the Batman once.
I’m already predicting Cristin Milioti is going to win awards for her role
Sounds like Scorceses's lane. "Good fellas" or "the Irishman" Italian mob story with a good jersey Italian accent. I'm gonna watch it now.

Only comic book show with as strong a start was “The Boys” and Watchmen (if you consider it a CB show).
Made me forget I was watching a comic book show and I mean that as the biggest compliment! Felt like the best mashup of Goodfellas/Sopranos
Look at the sunrise scene was actually taken from Steinbeck mice and men; we’re Lenny tells Carl to look at flowers before he kills him. Walking dead also had a scene similar were carol tells a little girl too.
Going to be one of the best limited series ever if it keeps up like the 1st episode!!
HBO = 👑
I agree I am watching Rings of Power season 2, Shogun, Only Murders in the Building, Monster "The Mendez Brothers," Agatha All Along and now Penguin. I am loving this!!
All they need to do now is change HBO’s name back to HBO and they’ve got a good brand again.
Yea I agree. Sofia creeped me out
I usually like to binge on such shows (over a weekend or so). But, with everyone praising it this much...I think I'll just watch it now.
Thank you! This was absolutely incredible, point blank, nothing else need said. The bar is raised.
"They really worked on every inch" 6 min 20 seconds, regarding the fully body prosthetics on Colin Farrell. Ray is comedy gold😂❤
It was amazing. Can’t wait for ep 2 🎉
Why did ign gave it a 5 I can’t understand
EXCUSE ME, A 5!?🤦🏾♂️
Because they only exist due to their terrible reviews getting hateclicks
Instantly hooked...great show

Man I wasn't expect much but it was great I was hooked from the beginning
Had no idea that it was gonna be this good
Thanks for the Kurgan reference, John. I see Kurgan every time i see this actor. "Remember what Ramirez taught you." I can't unhear the Kurgan lines.
Every time I see him I think, I can’t believe The Kurgan is Mr Crabs 😂
Mom!!!!!
38 years later he still scares me with that voice lol.
This is so good, makes me think Disney Plus would’ve went ahead on the projects that they cancelled, Arkham asylum and Gotham police show, hbo knows, quality over quantity
I loved it too!! .. And loved your discussion, review, and vibe, John!! .. Can't wait for Episode 2 and your discussion on that!!👍👊

Best show on tv right now. Imo
Loved the Batman, really enjoyed the first episode of penguin.
It's the Penguin's world and we just live in it!
Cristin Milioti walked in and set my television on fire. 👍🏼👍🏼
First episode was amazing
Yeah, I'm ready for the next episode ☹️

The next Peacemaker!! Loved the peacemaker too

@sweetchristmas92 at this point thats the only thing that could make him a villian. Im rooting for him
Lol! ... I liked it, it's sort of Sopranos meets breaking bad ... although it is a tiny bit campy.
Rhenzy Feliz getting his spot to shine is great
This would be sooo much better if it was a musical.
LOL
Hahahaha
Disneypointment was amazing. Good shit Ray.
Sofia nailed it
Batman…..found Jason Todd trying to steal tires from bat mobile…..after the kid becomes Robin ❤❤❤❤❤❤
My only problem was that I didn’t have more to watch 😂
Never ever i would've imagined that i would love a show about a Batman villain.
Marvel movies make for entertaining viewing. Experiences on a grand scale reminiscent of a blockbuster film. DC films can make for critically acclaimed feats of cinema that have heart and make one feel a genuine connection with the characters due to the incredible performances by the actors.
Scan the code!
Many actors are The Goat. Only one is The Kurgan.
How is there only one episode and we’re all calling this show phenomenal….that’s how you fucking do a comic book show or movie.
Beats all the marvel stuff from last yers

This show is badass
DC is back
Soo pumped for this. ❤
