    During college, my best friend there, a Sunni Muslim, was observing Ramadan. Being a Catholic Christian (at the time), I understood it as a ramped-up version of Lent, so I joined him in it for a week of it to see it's like for myself. At the start of my week and with the three basic rules of Ramadan that he shared with me, I assessed it thusly: during daylight hours, no food (done that voluntarily numerous times, not going to be tough for me), no drink, not even water (we're in South Central Texas in summer and studying at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos - this might kill me), and no entertainment unless it is educational (Mythbusters, anyone?). So how did it go? Well, obviously, despite my fears of the no drink rule, I'm still alive (yeah, I know it was all in my head and I knew then the survival times for not having water) and I do not regret that week at all. It did make me even more appreciative of my clean water than I already was before - and we binge-watched Mythbusters during our periods of inactivity.
    During that week, I had joked about the possible origins of various Islam rules and rituals. For the no drink rule, I joked that it likely (in my mind) came from Islam originating in the desert, and that it instills an appreciation and caring for your water and its source, thus compelling to protect and maintain it. I had also joked that the ban of drinking alcohol was probably because of Europeans; Islam was founded around 622 (though I don't know when this ban was started) and they had likely had to save too many drunken Europeans who got lost in the desert - that Muslims essentially went, "This stuff is causing too many problems for people. Get rid of it." Was I delirious from thirst? Maybe - I did want to see Tom Cruise win an Oscar, so you tell me.
    To this day, I deeply respect anyone with the willpower to get through the month of Ramadan - or one week of it, or even a day. It is grueling, but the end does give you a strong sense of satisfaction. For those who observe Ramadan, whenever or however you observe it, my hat's off to you.

    • @aninfinitelyvixxedvip6
      @aninfinitelyvixxedvip6 5 лет назад +4

      @David Richardson thank you for the respctful way you talked about Ramadan. And congratulations for fasting a whole week. Is not easy and that is why the reward we hope for is huge also.
      Your jokes were funny, in a way you are right about the water. We shouldn´t waste it. The alcohol part made me laugh, it could some bedouins though of like that hahahhaha, but as it says in teh Qur´an, alcohol has many benefits but its harms are greater than its benefits. One big harm being teh ability of not having control over your body and intellect.
      My hat´s is off to you too, is difficult to see someone talk about soething ISlamic and/or muslims the way you talked about both. Thank you

      Assalaam alaikum sister. I am an American convert too. I understand what it is to still feel lonely, even when you've got someone who is supportive of you, especially when it feels like everyone else has their families who they can share Ramadan with. This is my first Ramadan and I take every suhoor and iftar alone. I'm not able to visit mosque for iftar because I'm working. I actually break my fast late. It could be very easy for me to feel discouraged and think of how sad and lonely my situation is to be celebrating this blessed month on my own but instead I try to think of it as, "How strong you are for being committed to Allah. Look at you doing this all on your own! But in fact you aren't doing this alone, Allah is always with you and he is admiring and acknowledging your efforts." Inshallah may he make it easier for us sister. If you need anyone to reach out to, you can message me! I know it's not the same being physically able to meet, but I've also gotten so much encouragement from other convert sisters that I have spoken to online.

    I just want to say a few things to new Muslims or just people who may not know this , as a Muslim who fasts in a Muslim country and who fasts also when it's not Ramadan , so I kinda understand when you can't eat anything while everyone around you is stuffing food .
    you don't actually have to do suhoor at 4:00 am in the morning , especially if you work in the morning or have school , what I did when I fasted outside the month of Ramadan , is I just did suhoor basically like at midnight and directly went to sleep , so I was able to normally wake up in the morning .
    another advice I can give and something that I've noticed by watching different videos is that converts or Muslims fasting in non Muslim countries , they make it so hard for themselves by putting such an importance on food , I understand it may be difficult at first , but food isn't a big deal , if we look at it scientifically , the first humans weren't eating 3 meals a day , maybe 1 meal that consisted primarily of meat every 3-5 days .
    anyway , that was just a few tips I wanted to give you and Ramadan Mubarak to you guys , respond to this comment if you have any questions , I'll be happy to answer .

    The one ALLAH guides can never be alone. It was so overwhelming to see that Muslim brother share his loneliness and at the same time admitting that the ummah stands with him while he feels alone. No religion on earth can bring people close to each other as Islam can

    The beauty of living in America is that as long as we have freedom of speech and religion, all can worship as they choose. It is always good to gather and feast with family on religious holidays. In America, we celebrate because we are different.
