Five Ramadan Iftar Meals Around the World

  • 1.6 billion Muslims are celebrating Ramadan around the world. As this holy month comes to a close, families around the world are preparing their last iftar meals to break their daily fasts. Venture into the kitchen of five Muslim women preparing food for their families in five different countries, from India to Syria to the United States. Many are cooking recipes handed down to them from their mothers, relying on memory and instinct rather than measuring cups or spoons to prepare the perfect, flavorful dish. Though none of these women have met one another, there is a bond of tradition and global community that connects them.

Very true... War is war and people are people no matter race or religion... Any person, anywhere on earth, can imagine how terrible a specific holiday would be with no family around to help celebrate the customs and traditions.

I am a Hindu. So in 2018, I was in Delhi, during the holy month of Ramadan. I was visiting my uncle there. So I happen to visit Jama Masjid one day, just before the fourth call of prayer. I was more interested in the architecture and culture. But when i was there, and the fourth call of prayer happened, the whole masjid (mosque) lit up, and I also joined my hands in solidarity and I wished for something. And That wish came true next month. So its true when they say all your wishes come true in this holy month...Its true.

It's beautiful but guys,(men) be actively involved in preparing Iftar. It's not that we women have sabr and don't feel thirsty. We do, we get exhausted and sometimes want to run away from the kitchen, after all women also are human. And we too want to use sometime for Ibadah in Ramadan like men, but somehow everything takes a backseat and we prioritize preparing multiple dishes which most of the time you aren't even grateful of.
If you could only realize how difficult it is to wash and clean up after iftar, when the body just wants to given, when men mostly collapse infront of TV or chat. Remember it is not your ramadan only, it's ours as well. And we are humane, we haven't been given extra capacity to do all this. We do feel bad for ourselves deep somewhere but do not express it.
All I want to say, is that young men, or boys becoming men, please change this system. Be actively involved into preparing iftar and cleaning up afterwards. Our religion is simple and easy for everyone, let's not make it a cooking marathon for women

In my home, my father and mother are equally involved in the making of Iftar. I thought this was the case for everyone. Sad to hear it isn't. Women really deserve more, they deserve to relax and sit down as well. A man generally comes home from work then watches tv. A house wife, however, works everyday, every hour. I am 12 years old, and its sad to see that most of my friends are just interested in getting married and 'serving' men. This mentality needs to change, especially in rural areas. Islam gives a high position to women, uphold that.

How beautiful the whole idea of ramadan is. I'm an indian hindu but I feel really proud about the whole ramadan custom, it connects people of the whole community.May the almighty shower all his blessings upon people and I also pray for the Syrian people who are struggling everyday. May the almighty God give them strength.

I loved how you depicted the holiness of this month. A day in Ramadan is special, and you did well in presenting the pace too.❤️

even though Ramadhan is about fasting, food is almost always the center focus of the month. There's food that almost always shows up on Ramadhan but nowhere else. In my student years I would always be going from places to places eating iftar food, most of the time free. God bless those who give free , tasty food to others!

Agreed. In Pakistan, pakoras a typically made in Ramadan only and it basically represents Ramadan foods here.
