    Integrated Pest Management
Integrated pest management is a holistic approach in pest control that uses a range of prevention and monitoring practices for diseases, insects, or animals in and around your property.
By learning about which pests are common during specific seasons, what pests are dependent on, and their life cycles, you can manage them with the most appropriate methods to improve control, lower damage and cost, and reduce risk to your family, pets, and plants.
The goal is to prevent pests from reaching economic or aesthetically damaging levels while having the least environmental impact.
    Methods Used in IPM
    Cultural Control
Changing the environment to discourage pest presence. This is done to remove a basic need like food, water, or shelter.
    Biological Control
The use of other animals, insects, parasites, or pathogens to control targeted pests. Use caution, as this may lead to more damage or another infestation to control.
    Mechanical/Physical Control
Physically remove pests or prevent their movement into a specific area. Includes sound repelling machines, traps or vacuums, barriers like screens or caulk, pruning plants, or mowing.
    Chemical Control
The use of pesticides or cleaning agents to kill, control, repel, attract, or manage pests. Should be used when needed and in combination with other IPM approaches for effective, long-term control.
What are the Steps to IPM
    1. Identify - each pest has its own behaviors and habits
    Is it indoors or outdoors?
    Is it seasonal or year-round?
Is it a regional pest or nationwide?
    2. Monitor and evaluate
Before taking action, monitor the pest population for some time. Determine the location of the pests and size of the population.
    3. Determine action thresholds
The boundary between tolerable and intolerable damage done by the pest and the point that pest control must be taken
    4. Implement control tactics
If pests exceed your tolerance and action threshold, move forward with control tactics.
    5. Evaluate and document results
Once the infestation is controlled, record what type of pest infestation, where it took place & other areas it was found, use of products, and other actions taken. These will help refine your control methods for the next time an infestation occurs.
