    I just made the most beautiful Faux Mercury Glass votive holder! FYI, I couldn't find the Krylon, so I used the Rustoleum brand that Home Depot carries. It worked like a charm. Thanks for sharing this video!

    Not enough detail. eg. Why spray with vinegar? (what does it do?) How did you do it inside? Do you let it dry between coats? I love them but I like to learn about techniques and tips when I'm crafting. Love them.

    • @outinapout
      @outinapout 10 лет назад +3

      The vinegar actually etches the spots in the paint that give the distressed/aged look.
      I recently took part in a class at Michael's where they just had us wet the inside of the jar before applying the paint, and it did not look nearly as cool.
      I found very thin layers worked best. You have to wait a few minutes in between layers, but if you wait too long, the etching doesn't work as well. The Looking Glass paint can be a little tricky at first - it's thin and it is prone to running, but once you get the hang of it it's not bad.

    Your lamps look beautiful. They look really gold/antiqued in that last frame but the plastic lid on the top of the krylon paint looks more silver. Can you tell me if this look is more of a silver cool tone or a gold warm tone? thanks

    The Looking Glass paint is definitely a silver tone- when lit it actually looks bluish. I was going to ask how the hurricanes in final pic were lit because I'm desperately trying to make gold mercury glass for my wedding centerpieces...

      For people reading this well after, I'll add: I tried at least 6 different gold spray paints and many different methods and never got the gold look I wanted. Gold "mercury glass" is commercially available, though the means to DIY don't seem to be :(

    • @whimsicalendeavors
      @whimsicalendeavors 10 лет назад

      Jessica Allison perhaps after the mercury glass with silver, a latte colored alcohol ink rubbed lightly over would give you the gold tone you desire. Worth a shot?

      Feliciti Which brand? It's obviously too late for my wedding (we ended up buying gold mercury glass globes from Pottery Barn) but I'd love to have it for other projects- just googled and while I see plenty of gold spray paint (which doesn't look the same, I tried a ton of them) I don't see good mirror :(

    I love this idea! I'm wondering if I can spray on the border of my mirror that has become blemished. I was going to frame it with wood to try and hide the blemishes but this is a great antique look.

    • @outinapout

      I tried at least 6 different gold spray paints trying to make gold Mercury glass globes for my wedding centerpieces- none have the mirrored look that the Looking Glass paint does. We even tried layering in different configurations, no luck. You can get a cool etched/aged look with the gold, but it's not mercury glass.
      After months of trial and error, we ended up buying our centerpieces at a gardening supply and Pottery Barn :/

      Elva - I've seen it done both ways. I used a 50% vinegar and 50% water in my video here: ruclips.net/video/YsImjdtMECU/видео.html Let me know if that helps.

    • @outinapout
      @outinapout 10 лет назад +1

      I tried everything to get this to look gold, including layering it with different gold paints, both before the Looking Glass and after, and even using just gold spray paint to do it, and I could never get it to look the way I wanted.
      The only thing I didn't get a chance to try that I think might work is using an amber colored glass, which, when you put the silver finish on the inside may appear gold.
      And, yes, you can find gold mirrors, but the chemical process involved in making one is FAR beyond the typical DIYer :)
