You may be observing it in the video, but I think it's worth mentioning that you should sand in the direction of the rotation of the bit, as in, the bit would like to roll along the edge to be sanded. Going against rotation gives ridges.
Yay! Perfect timing! I'm so glad it could help :) Thanks for watching! I've got tip videos coming out every weekday so make sure to subscribe cuz their plenty more to come :)
This was well done, but I confess the main reason I'm liking and commenting is because your camera person sneezed and then apologized and I appreciate that a lot
Cool vid! I like how unlike in other videos on this topic you give us an up and personal look at using the tools and they’re results! It’s really helpful, one question though, where did you / where can you get the stone rotary tip?
Thanks! :) I got mine with the set that came with my Wen rotary tool I got on Amazon. But you can get sets or individual bits on Amazon and at the hardware store. Here is a link to some on Amazon :) amzn.to/3nMjTtz
Awesome tutorial and tips. What tool would you recommend for sanding larger pieces of foam? Ive been told detail sanders are a bad idea and orbital sanders can be very hit or miss. Ive heard Sheet sanders and belt sanders are good, but the only belt sanders readily available here are handheld, though I could just turn it upside down. I seek your guidance oh great foam god!
For the most part I would try to avoid sanding large areas of the foam wherever possible. If you need to, the type of foam you are using will make a big difference in how smooth you can get it and what type of sander would work the best. What is it that you are needing to sand the large area for and what type of foam are you using? :) Thanks for the wonderful compliments! That made my day!! :)
@@CosplayApprentice Hi, thanks for replying so quickly. Its mainly if Im making a big piece like a sword or some other large scale weapon prop and need to lets say bevel an edge or something. Ive seen people using dremels but they always seem to leave a somewhat uneven bevel, but maybe thats just the experience of the people using them, but thats besides the point. Basically it's for if I need to bevel foam or maybe even sand down textures like the texture found on floormat foam. Thanks for your tips already, I really do appreciate the help. :)
If that is the case then I would definitely go with more of a belt sander option. Even if it it handheld you can clamp it down to a bench or something to secure it. But that is a good way to go for long sections of sanding. For the beveling it's even better if you can get a table top one that has an adjustable angle on the plate. That will allow you to be more precise about your bevels. :)
That was interesting. Arrived here while doing research for a project... I am making a hammer head to make a second larger hammer for my haunted house character Jack Hammer.. using an EVA yoga roller and almost all of them have bumps od some sort so trying to smooth it down lol
I’m curious would you be able to sand channels (for placing metal rods to strengthen a prop) without a dremel? Reason I ask is that I’m probably going to make maybe at least one~two Cosplay costumes but I know I won’t have any usage for the tool after I complete the sets.
You can sand a channel by hand, you may want to wrap sand paper around a dowel or something to do it. It will take a very long time to do it by hand. I would highly recommend spending $20 on the Dremel tool and save yourself a ton of time and frustration. Or you can use a wood burning tool/soldering iron to burn in a channel to do that as well. :)
How about smoothing out exacto cuts lines on regular FOAM BOARDS? Im trying to make fish but then the boards have spaces visible correct? hmmm, no good....
What is your advice on cleaning all the foam dust off the final product? that stuff is everywhere and i want it full cleaned off before i seal and paint haha
I would recommend a combination of using a can of computer air spray and a microfiber cloth. The air should get most of it and can get into little cracks and then the microfiber cloth will help catch anything left behind :)
hello! i'm trying to make mold for a project. part of it, i'm using EVA foam. but i'm kinda worried that cement would stick to the stick foam when it completely cures. would heat sealing the foam lessen that problem? what would you suggest?
To make sure I understand the situation, you are trying to make a mould to pour concrete into and want to use EVA foam as part of the mould but you are worried the concrete will stick to it, is that right?
@@CosplayApprentice yes Sir. that's correct. i'm trying to make a mould for a cement pot(box shape). i'm trying to combine sintra and eva foam. coz i'm not sure if silicon mould can hold the whole shape for 24 hrs. sintra to hold the shape and eva for some details.
i'v seen some videos and they're using styrofoam. but i'm not sure if i wanna go that way since it can be messy afterwards. so i'm trying to see if eva foam is a better replacement.
I haven’t tried this before but I think heat sealing is a good idea, it will help close up the pores in the foam so there will be less to grip to. I wonder with concrete if using something like baby powder or something like Vaseline would be better for helping prevent the concrete from sticking as well? Sounds like a fun project!! Let me know how it goes! :)
@@CosplayApprentice will try those things as well. thank you Sir! and my apologies, i know you're channel isn't about what i'll be making but as soon as you mentioned heat sealing, i knew i had to ask. haha! i appreciate it. :)
trouble: have foam, I build, I heat it, shape it, I seal the foam, I plastic, I paint, and then I try to clear coat, but the clear coat dulls the shine of the paint? What am I doing wrong ?
I stopped clear-coating my stuff a while back for the same reason. What are you using to clear coat? That is a great question. It is one of the standard one that came in a kit of Dremel accessories and I'm having trouble finding details on it. I'll have to check when I get back home and let you know :)
I hate sanding. Its coarse, its rough and you need to do it everywhere

I needed to sand the foam in my hockey helmet and I found you! Thanks, a hand sander was definitely too big
Thanks for this, can you also explain the different grits and when should we us them? Really suck at sanding need to practice
Thanks for watching! Yes that is a great question and I'll add that to the list to make a video on it! :)
Thanks, man. I was really looking for some info about it.
No probs! Glad I could help! :) Let me know if you have any additional questions! :)
sand. I need to get used to my dremel more but I can't get it smooth enough and it shows through my primer. thanks for this video!
Hope it helps! :) Let me know if you have any additional questions. Using the stone bit really helps improve the smoothness factor. :)

So, are you just applying a light pressure with the stone head? Also, do you know if the wtfoam come back in-stock on Amazon at some point?
Yes, and the stone head will eat away less than the sand paper barrels. :)
You saved me my dude my pops wanted a noob saibot mask who could double as a corona virus maks and dang I didn't know how to sold the rough sections.
Yay!! I'm so glad I could help! :) Thank you so much for watching!! :)
I'm here to learn sanding . . . brand new so I'd say "sand" but I haven't even gotten started, so we'll see.
Glad you are here :)
Do I need to wear like anything for safety when sanding foam
Yes, it is best to wear a dust mask and safety glasses when sanding foam. :)
Thank you for your great tips! :D
is a Sanding paper an alternative if I don’t have/ have access to a dremel?
did you try it with sand paper? let me knoww
can i use sandpaper instead 🙂↕️
Can i use solder to smoothen eva foam?
Maybe for the edges but it will burn through the foam. I use a solder to get certain designs burned in on the foam :)
