FACT: After this game, BG told the press (the next day) that Malone was his idol and he patterned his game after him. Later after BG was diagnosed with Parkinson's, Mailman called him up and they went on a fishing trip that resulted in raising $107,000 for BG's Parkinson's charity. And it all started with an elbow.
Brian Grant today has a sever case of Parkinson's. It ended is career early and only worsened over the decades. It's so unfortunate. He was a solid player.
Karl gave Isiah Thomas like 40 stitches grabbed the ball stood over him and waited but only the coach came after him... He ended the bad boy piston era that day.
Of course. But BACK THEN We remembered KARL (intentionally) throw the elbow to DAVID'S(S.A.) temple, knockin Him out cold while STILL on His feet. They remembered it too. DAVID likes to 🐟.
Back when the NBA was real and players hated opponents, not the soft brotherly love and friends players of todays boring game that allows 4 steps, no touch defense, drive and kick for a 3 pointer boring play of today
Malone and Stockton weren't kinda dirty, they were dirty, and yes still HOF all time greats. Those Malone elbows were notorious. He worked out so hard too he was huge.
He knew that his height and build intimidated other players - even taller ones. That's why I loved a player like Rodman - he did not care how big you were, he was going to man handle you no matter what.
That was just someone going for a rebound. Grant throwing elbows on his rebound was trying to hit someone, not just clearing space. Obvious difference. Many players of that era cleared space. Clearly Karl wasn't worried about Grant, and Grant didn't want to push it.
Na. When you're going over someone's back for a rebound, what in the fuck reason would you have for bringing your lead arm down into the person's face for? If you have ever played the game of basketball at ANY level, you'd realize how asinine your statement is. There was no reason physically for him to bring his arm down on Grant's head when Grant had already landed and Malone was coming down with the ball. He was just a dirty piece of shit man. On and off the court
1st. off, Great Series ! Unintended elbow by KARL, but GRANT wasn't having it. We remembered that elbow KARL gave DAVID Robinson(S.A.) that knocked Him OUT on His feet(intentional).
I agree unintended -- not a Malone fan but that's how to rebound like you mean it. Big difference to me between "throwing" a bow and possessing a rebound.
Malone, Stockton, Kobe, etc. - were all dirty players. I don't recall Jordan pulling slick stuff, but now James is trying to be like Malone in his last years.
Karl Malone looked like Black Hulk Hogan to me, he played dirty like him to. It was always the "who's he gonna knock out next with his elbow" Of all the teams and HOF'ers Jordan denied a ring I was only happy when he did it to Utah and Stockton & Malone.
back when paint game was the only game. before threes took over. steph and kd wouldn't thrive back then, and malone and stockton would have to make big changes to their game to be effective today
This was COMPLETE bullshit. Jazz playing dirty, refs let them get away with it. Brian grant didn’t even do anything that bad but those technicals were a joke. So freakin awesome Portland won this series. Karma
but of course the 18-30 year olds would say Lebron getting an elbow like this would do nothing to him and he would be able to absorb the contact because hes the biggest and strongest athlete of ALL TIME!
Karl Malone is a well known dirty player, just ask Zeek and his 20 something stitches, David Robinson concussion. Those are just the well known ones. Can’t forget about John Stockton as well. He was real lo key with his dirty play, throwing elbows set screens lol. Malone’s elbows were all with intent IMO.
The invitation to Kobe was just some embarrassing stuff that belongs to his goofy style, it obviously wasn't that serious. Invitation was "standing" because he knew it was just not going to happen, but at the same time he wanted to remember us he's bigger than Kobe and he'd take him down even after retirement.
That was an intentional elbow by Malone on Grant .. he intentionally lowered the boom while going up for rebound. Malone had been hitting opposing players with his elbow.
Never been a Karl Malone fan but that's gotta be the most unintentional elbow in NBA history... especially for Malone. Pretty funny seeing him calm and collected with his hands on his hips while Grant plays tough guy.. hahaha
Karl Malone got away 20-30 times in his career of making a play look accidental while injuring the guy he fouled badly.. meaning injury to the play so bad they could not play for weeks.. Often the league just ignored it.. I kept hoping someone would clip him bad..
@@bballvault Martin tried very hard and he didn't get any result. He made a fool of himself. Malone's elbows were preterintentional (Isiah Thomas), territorial (Steve Nash) or just unintentional (two elbows against on Jordan were quite similar to this one vs Grant). He used to swing a lot and he wasn't shy about it. He also took the beating he received no problem, and he got a lot of that too. A whole lot of the narrative against him on the court has more to do with what he did off the court than what he did on the court...

Grant would go on to have the last laugh because the Blazers ended up winning this series. This is the same Utah Jazz team that lost to the Bulls the previous 2 NBA Finals in a row. Today these Jazz are propped up as some kind of team that would've won multiple championships in any other era that didn't have Jordan yet the first shot they have after Jordan retired not only do that not win the NBA Championship they get bounced in the second round by this Blazers team that definitely wasn't anything special. Next year's Blazers were a lot better with the additions of playoff veterans like Scottie Pippen & Detlef Schrempf who nearly beat the 2000 Lakers in the WCF. If these Jazz were anywhere near the team people today are pumping up to try and shine up Jordan's postseason competition then they at the very least make it to a 3rd straight NBA Finals but nope they got bounced second round by this good not great Trailblazers team
I love reading people here who seem to be spewing anti-Karl Malone stuff. There is a reason he remains calm through that dialogue. If anyone is under some false impression he wasn’t 2x stronger than Grant you need to watch a lot more film on 90s basketball.
Karl Malone one of most unlikable guys in sports. You had to watch out for him. He'd give u a concussion with one of those "accidental elbows".He couldn't guard anyone really. He couldn't jump 2 inches off the ground.Fake it to u make it.Win by intimidation is what he was all about. He had a nice soft jumper tho for a big bulky dude I'll give him that and He had John Sockton to hook him up lovely around the basket.
@Willie Gordon it's according to what u like.As the NBA grew and the money grew it became more about business and entertainment. The farther u go back the better and more pure is the basketball. From a purist point of view the best basketball was actually the 1960s with Wilt,Russell,West,Big O,Baylor etc.(in my humble opinion of course)
He used to jump 27 inches indeed. Not exciting, but not too bad either. He was a heavy guy. Also, he could guard pretty much anyone to be honest... he just didn't happen to be a shot blocker. If you want to say something negative about him, just state the obvious: he wasn't a good enough 1v1 player in the clutch for a superstar. He wasn't good at attacking people from the dribble and he wasn't a center (hence not tall enough to score in the paint through a crowd).
How can you not love this era
