Can you do some black-powder, felon-friendly tests? One could put BP in a 45-70 casing, but it still constitutes a "round-of-gun-ammunition", and I could get in trouble! Is there a cap-and-ball rifle that you are aware of? Anyway, thanks for the cool content.
That Ruger is a nice looking rifle...you have quite the collection of eclectic models. Those bondstrike's really slapped that gel. The velocity and bullet weight should make them great on those long West TX and Western US shots. There was still more bullet left than what the 6.5 PRC starts with.
Just found this video. A few months after it was posted. I doubt you see this. Your leather is awesome. You made me some for my 45-70 years ago. I highly recommend if anyone is looking for leather.
@masonoutdoors_masonleather where I work, more people are coming up to me asking for magnum cartridges for deer and elk hunting. Keep them coming! Also, any time-line on when we can see a video on more sst bullets?
I just picked up some of these to try in my savage 300 mag. Unfortunately they dont seem to be grouping well. I have noticed any 180 grain factory loads that have a stated velocity over 3000 fps do not group well in that rifle.
Had already ordered some of these to test in my rifle for accuracy at 100 and at range. They’re phenomenal for both in my 6.5prc. It’s taken WT deer at 200 and antelope at 450. Amazing penetration/terminals on both and caught both bullets on the edge of hide(quartering shots).
It looks good, maybe a bit shallow penetration for heavier game. But if you got that into the lungs I think it's one of the most quickest dispatching of anything you have tested. I worry a bit about a close quartering shot on heavier game with that shallow penetration but broadside it would rock anything in North America in a hurry.
Many hunters use 150 and 165 grain bullets for shooting ligher framed game. Would be interesting to watch the performance of lighter bullets such as the sierra tipped game king 165 grains.
I'd bet that Norma, as with many others, figure "normal" ranges being about 200-250 yards, and that long ranges start at about 400 yards and continue to 750 yards. Popular opinion and with testing is that that is where the BONDSTRIKE performs best with expansion and penetrating more than at closer ranges, close range being 0-175 yards (30-30 caliber performing distances). When you get your 300 yard range up you're gonna love it (I'd help ya out but not budgeted for it currently). As with always, top notch quality video. Thank You
Did Norma used to produce ammo for Nosler? I've got some older cartridges for my 6.5X284 that are in carriers similar to this except the color is grey and has Nosler on them.
Most of the metric caliber rifle ammo sold by US ammo companies is made in Europe. S&B & PP are the main two making the ammo, but you will see Sako, Norma, etc..
Hi Mason I watched all your videos on 180 gr federal fusion. I would love if you did federal fusion 180 gr .308 vs 3006 vs 300wm. Same day, same time of day same chronograph. I think something went wrong when you shot your 3006 over the cronie speeds were too low. According to my Garmin my bergara spits them them out at 2749 average.
The difference between your observed velocity and mine is (only) 122 fps, in the grand scheme of inconsistency that is factory hunting ammo, that’s not cause for concern. The average vs spec velocities for the 180 grain Federal Fusion loads are as follows: 308 Win 16 fps fast, 30-06 73 fps slow, 300wm 142 fps slow. At this point I’ve tested over 200 loads across 18 calibers and can confidently make some observations. In this case the achieved 30-06 velocity is the most “normal” of any of them, factory loads through factory rifles almost always come in slower than spec, 73 fps slow isn’t unusual. There could be any number of reasons you see a different velocity: a particularly tight spec barrel, a lot or several lot or a completely updated spec run of ammo that got one more or one less grain of powder, slightly thicker cases, etc, etc. That’s why I state in the description of every video that my results are my own and yours may vary. Almost every test I’ve done has been during extremely similar weather conditions (90-100 degrees, clear), not different enough to make a material difference in ammo performance. What I’ve observed does make a material difference in ammo performance is the the ammo itself and the rifle you shoot it out of. Hunting ammunition is loaded mechanically on mass production assembly lines, there’s going to be variance, especially with powder charge and thus velocity, even more so when comparing results through different rifles from different manufacturers with different individual barrels. As I say often, the velocity is the last thing I’m worried about, and matters a lot less than how the bullet itself performs on impact, which with consistent bullets (like fusion) doesn’t vary much in the typical range of impact velocities.
Thanks for clearing that up. I'm so interested in this because I'm trying to figure out if there is a correlation between speed and lack of penetration. This year I've shot 2 Kudu cows, 2 impala ewes, 4 impala rams and a warthog with fusion 180gr from my 3006. Kudu cow 1 at 100m shot just behind the shoulder exited through the opposite shoulder. Impala female 1. 90m hit in the spine devistating damage. bullet went straight through. Impala ewe 2. At 110m Shot just behind the shoulder. Bullet went straight through her and the hind quarters of a young ram standing 20m further. Hidden in some shadows unfortunately. Kudu cow 2 and the 4 impala rams all shot at under 60m on or behind the shoulder. None of the bullets exited. Unfortunately they threw all the bullets away when they butchered the animals 😢 The warthog I shot between the eyes at about 40m. The bullet changed direction and exited behind the front leg. Any thoughts?
Yes absolutely, the faster a bullet impacts the more it will expand (usually), which creates more resistance to penetration, resulting in less penetration. A great example showcasing this is looking at the penetration of several 30-30 Winchester loads, which are going a lot slower than say 30-06, 308, etc, yet 25”+ of penetration is commonplace for a 150 or 170 grain 30-30 bullet. Some go even deeper. These bullets are barely going 2,000 fps (if not less) at 100 yards.
Since this is the same bullet in the 308 and 30-06. You already have the test data at a given distance. Just match the impact velocity of the other two, on a chart for the 300WM
I would be a little concerned trying to punch thru a shoulder on an elk or moose at close range. Good ammo nonetheless but maybe better for medium game. Edit- finished the video… haha you said this exact thing
OK, OK, between you and one of my best friends I'll sell off a kidney or something and buy a rifle in .300WM OR .300WSM. I'm VERY impressed with your results thus far regardless of ammo manufacturer especially with this video. Great work! Keep 'em coming'!!!!
Would like an AR 10 in 300 WSM ? I build and sell AR 10 uppers in noncommercial chamberings, and I have in the works a 300 wsm AR 10 upper going up for sale when finished

Thank's another really good round. I've been a 300 WM fan for 47 years and have used it for hunting very successfully
Glad to be of service, thanks for watching! Please share the video, it’s a big help!
These bullets did phenomenal. Ready to try these in my 300 prc. Thanks for the video. Your content is the best ammo testing videos on RUclips.
Glad to be of service, thanks for watching! Please share the video, it’s a big help!
I picture a moose saying "tis but a scratch" before dramatically tipping over after a few seconds.
Sounds about right
Pesky Mosquito!

Much appreciated!

I bet this would be good for a deer load for the 300 win mag. Less crazy penetration and more power transfer
Whoa! I hope my rifle likes these. Just damn. And remember, those things are spinning ridiculously fast. Great review!
Glad to be of service, thanks for watching! Please share the video, it’s a big help!
Wow that stuff is insane! Would make a great deer round for woods hunting
Indeed
I've been waiting for the 7 and 300 mag videos
Here’s a good pile of them!

I’ve got a few more SST loads in editing, 243 & 7-08 if I recall, possibly 300 Blackout if I film another little run for that.
@@masonleather_outdoors love to see it!
Wow LOL 😂 great video, had me laughing so hard, love the terminator reference lol .. this ammo rocks 👍🏻

Past 200 yards this stuff hammers elk and penetrates amazing

Can you please test some 35 whelen

The cartridge holders are also flammable to start a fire if you have a lighter
Yep
Man that’s sweet! Cool that they thought of those things
That's wild expansion. Absolutely devastating. I bet at 200 or 300 yards they'd be good for penetration depth.

@@masonleather_outdoors yes sir 👍
I've always heard those ammo holders are useful as firestarters if you get lost in the bush
Yep
Great movie reference!
💯
I have the 300 wsm version and I’m getting very close to advertised velocity. My 5 shot average is about 3040 fps out of a 22” barrel.
Can you test 7mm08 please with Hornady interlocks and also Barnes ttsx?
Hey Mason. Great videos! How do you like your scope? I just ordered one.

Do you ever plan on testing any 198gr 8mm Mauser loads?
Yes
Definitely need a 200 yard test on some of this 300 wm ammo. When it becomes available

I’m 99% certain that Norma used to make Nosler brass. Almost across the board.
No idea
Nosler Brass is Norma accross the Board
Have you tested any of the Sako ammo?
No
I would love for you to make one for my 300 .
Very impressive. 3.2x expansion...wow.
No kidding. That was gnarly. Maybe too much bloodshot meat.
I'm gonna try copper on this year's elk hunt.
Wow!
Quite
How wide was the wound track? Kinda of hard to tell

@masonoutdoors_masonleather I am I watch all your videos they are the best on tube as far as I'm concerned short and straight to the point 👉.
They could have probably milked another 100 fps out of this stuff and made the bullet a bit tougher.
Dude that would hit a mule deer, an antelope and a hog like a semi at 80 mph. Definitely drt for sure. That was Thors hammer at 3.2x.
Slamboni
I think it world be deverstating if you hit a bone at 100 yards with this ammo.
It would be quite a mess
Meh. I think 200g would be better with this bullet in 300win. A little light on the penetration.
180gr movin at 2900fps😅
Yeah, Norma is typically high quality, but slow.
Yep
