    FEAR:
    False
    Evidence
    Appearing
    Real
    Funny how we get caught up in our own heads and this happens.
    Life is a journey. Not a destination.
    False "what if's" that never happen.
    Or if they do they're not nearly as bad as we thought they'd be.
    I don't know. For me it's because of folks like you that when your video comes up it gives me peace.
    Peace and inspiration. After a year of waiting I finally got back into a Tacoma. And while it's not a camper, the mountains here in Colorado call me. And yes I will answer them.
    The views you show are amazing. The food you cook looks amazing too. :)
    You guys are great. Thank you so much for sharing your lives with us.

      A Tacoma is perfect and to the mountains you will go! There's a class I teach called "Thought Patterns" and we get deep into discussing fears. Where they come from, how they prevent us from moving forward, and how to overcome them. I decided not to get too deep into it and keep the video as "light" as possible with a deep topic. If that makes sense. We can learn to break patterns in our thoughts and recognize when a fear is holding us back and change up our thought processes to overcome them and feel accomplished. In this case, each road that we decide to go down that's been bumpy or steep or remote, has been worse than the next. Because of that, this particular road felt like a breeze. Increase those challenges and those bumps in the road and everything else is a breeze. Thank YOU for enjoying this with us. This is why we do it. 😁

      Wings and Wheels Alaska I lost my husband of almost 41 years last year and trying to figure out how to get back out there! I don’t want fear to keep me from moving ahead. Don’t ever let fear keep you from living your best life.
    My husband and I lived our best life for almost 41 years.
    From raising our children to enjoying retirement.
    When he died last year the one thing we said to each other before he died was “we had no regrets”!!!
    If you can say that...awesome!!!

      Wings and Wheels Alaska Thank You! We had an awesome life and marriage and YES the love of my life! We loved hiking and visiting our National Parks! We visited Alaska three times. Twice with a cruise which really wasn’t visiting the true Alaska and barely touched your beautiful state. Then another 17 day trip of the interior which just wet our appetite. I still hope to come back to visit Kobuk and Gates of the Arctic National Parks which were the only two National Parks we had left! Someday soon after this virus. I love watching you two...it makes my heart smile!

    Strongly recommend hiking poles. Prolong your knee cartilage, ascents are easier since you use your upper body a bit and descents are less jarring and safer if you have 4 legs instead of two.

    Fear is nothing more than another envelope we have not pushed through.
    Each of us have many envelopes of fear and when one is conquered, another takes its place.
    This is the human experience of growth.
    The same is true of goals.
    I have carried a book of Robert Service poems since my days in my Scout as a ski/trout-bum. It has accompanied me all over the world and I always seem to find the right poem at the right time no matter where I am or the circumstances I find myself. Just like you did to conclude this video.

I don't think I'd ever have the guts to completely give up a home base at this age. Maybe when I was younger I would have totally done that, but we've both worked too hard to put it all into a piece of metal on wheels. I'll leave that up to the young folks. 😂. Depends on our location. If we are leaving for long periods of time we put the shades up and leave our shoes out. In Alaska, nobody would be silly enough to break into a van not knowing who or what's inside. As we travel further south in the future that will become more of a concern. Stumbled upon your video and am so glad I did. Very much enjoyed your hike to the two mountain lakes although I was wishing you had trekking poles. As for fears, they can be so limiting but I learned a saying that has helped me " fear is the hole through which harm comes." I'm 71 now and that saying has helped me overcome some pretty big fears in my life because I came to realize that the build up of/ to being fearful is far worse, in most cases, than the reality. Needless to say I am now a "belled" subscriber to your channel.

Certainly many many creative ways to make money. Ember is a hoot because when Jim Is taking the lead she runs in front of him and comes back to me. When I'm in the lead she doesn't run ahead. She stays by my feet and runs between Jim and I. She hands that Alpha female role over to me every now and then. 😂. Love this video-both the beauty of the area and your hike, seeing Ember's exuberance, and the fear discussion. My Revel fear is getting into some place that we can't get out of. Once my husband had to execute what seemed like a 20 point turn in a not-wide-enough spot on a dirt road. The challenges of getting out of situations is always worth it. By the way, you guys need to start a Revel cookbook. Your cooking clips always make me hungry.

    • @WingsandWheelsAlaska
      @WingsandWheelsAlaska  4 года назад

      Yes! That's exactly why I was afraid of this road! The funny thing is we have done far worse roads, and since I didn't really know what I was getting into? The fear was less. But because I've been down this road I was scared! I didn't tell Jim though, it wasn't a legitimate fear that was strong enough to keep me from going but your point exactly, doing a 20pt turn, getting frustrated with each other. And you're correct, once you overcome the challenge it's worth it! The cookbook is a great idea! I was thinking we could ask our Revel group for each member to contribute one recipe they make in the Revel and make it a collaboration to share. That would be fun! A lot of work, but hey, I'm not working right now so why not? 😁. Revel on!!! ❤️

    Fantastic video as always! I love the narration and the gliding shots of the various kinds of foliage you have up there, most of which I've never seen before. So happy to see you two out hiking, with Ember having the zoomies all the while! It gets comical watching her swimming around the lilt lakes and bounding through streams. The funny thing in your commentary is that you said other hikers warned you that you would get wet, yet I think you both stayed fairly dry on your excursion. As for the fear thing, I'm glad you chose to address this for the other people looking to get into the van exploring lifestyle. As for my personal fears, I only have one right at the moment, and that's the fear of not being able to do the very thing you're doing. I've taken as many steps as I can, and I'm definitely in the "Waiting Place" as Dr. Seuss would call it. I have tons of debt because of me trying to achieve my goals, a job that will barely pay the bills and won't ever lead to anything great, and I'm living in a place where things are only locking down more rather than opening up. Dwelling on it, is not healthy, but seeing lack of forward progress certainly weights on my thoughts. It's pretty much what I want to do. Get a 4x4 RV and and get the hell out of Dodge. As it is now, I can only live vicariously through you, for which I am more than grateful. Keep up the fantastic work, and I love the improvements on your video style. Use of gimbals was evident, and awesome! TTYL.

    • @WingsandWheelsAlaska
      @WingsandWheelsAlaska  4 года назад

      Hi! Our feet only got damp. They would have been wet if we would have continued to the second lake and the river crossing. The behind the scenes story we had to cut out....on the way up we saw the river crossing at the end of the path. But where the path and the river crossed originally didn't make any sense. The first three feet from the bank was DEEP and fast and then it became more shallow. There was no way I felt I'd make it across that part of the river without taking a swim. I looked around and saw a small path continuing up. I told Jim, "Let's go see what's up there, I don't think this is where we are supposed to cross." We actually kind of got into a little tiff over it. 😂. I kept going up and he went a different route up. After seeing the lake I was like "Yeeeeee Hawwwww...here's the first lake!!!" And then we came back together to trek to the waterfall. It wasn't until we were coming back down that I saw the "real" crossing to the second lake that would get us wet. But that brush was really mushy and damp for sure! And that incline. Damn it, I got out of shape REAL quick with all this going on. As for your fear, it's completely understandable. It can be challenging because too much focus on those small goals and forward movement can be frustrating. Give yourself some credit for what you have been able to do accomplish! ALL of this is just blip in time for us. We are more than grateful to have you a part of this with us. Jim busted out the Gimble to play with again and I"m so thankful for that because HE PICKED UP THE CAMERA, so you might want to give yourself some credit for making this video even more awesome as well. ❤️ Thank you.

      @@WingsandWheelsAlaska I’m glad that you were able to get up to see the first lake at least. There’s something magical about alpine lakes, and I chuckled a little bit about you two finding different paths up to the lake. That, of course, is how all of those places got found in the first place. Think about the first person who chose to wander up the side of that mountain. They didn’t have GPS, or Google Earth to let them see the lake up there. They just had to go find it for themselves. That’s why I love getting off trail when I can. It’s what the real explorers and adventurers did to find those places to begin with. I also love that Jim picked up the gimbal and started shooting hiking footage with it. It’s great seeing the differences on what your eye picks up and what his does. You two key in on different things. My fear is one of those that I just can’t find a way out of, which is incredibly frustrating for me. There’s nothing like feeling I’ve hit a granite wall that I can’t get over. I spent everything trying to get a door to open out of this dead-end I’m in, and it didn’t pan out. As a result, I’m basically screwed in a State I’ve already explored extensively. But I have you to watch and dream of being out there. It’s pretty much all I dream of.

    Loved the video, beautiful drive, I only visited Hope once...wow a lot of people where you guys were...Ember always seems to find water to swim in...you look tired...the hike didn't look easy...fear will stop you from living...one must push pass that fear to live their lives...guess my biggest fear would be burning alive....

      Interesting, that's one of my fears as well. I hate the thought of burning to death. Or dying any kind of slowish death for that matter. We were really surprised how many people were out there, but that's sort of how this summer has been. Alaskans want out of their houses much more than in the past. Especially those like me who still aren't working 😁. We decided to wait it out until everyone left. We had always said we wanted to spend a few days there and the weather or the bugs drove us out. Seeing the bear was a delight. Agreed, push past past fear, recognize it, admit it, give it a moment of power, and let it go. Thank you for being here with us today.

    I love fear. If there weren’t fear everybody would be out filling up the open spaces. My fear is dying unfulfilled.
    Our van was delivered finally and our first night out we went to the Everglades and fell asleep listening to alligators croaking. Mind you going for a walk with snow on the ground freaks me out just a bit.

      Haha, yes! Fear is also keeping people home on their couches watching Netflix. I can't say there's more in life that will make me feel more fulfilled than I am. I'd like to see my children get married and have babies of their own, but in terms of experiences, I've had a great life. Except, now that you mention alligators croaking I must say I've never heard that, so mayyybeee I'm not quite fulfilled yet. Thank you so much for watching and sharing your thoughts. P.S. Well good for you you have found the place and peace where the opinion of others isn't that important it influences you beyond a conversation. For me personally that is very foreign since I (for as long as I can remember) never really cared what other people thought of me and my actions. As long as I and my significant other is oke with me and what I do and don't I am perfectly fine with that.
    I find it a blessing and liberating to be able to not care (i.e. zero fucks given) about the pressures of others...

    I agree that fear can be a big deterrent for experience. We share some of your fears: Breakdowns (we have had some), injury or illness in remote areas, surprising wild beings, but most of all, we fear not having the experiences we want to have before it is too late to do it. You are doing some of the things that we would love to do, and perhaps at your age would have done. Don’t wait for disability and age to come along to start your journey. Go for your dream!
    Have you considered purchasing, or have you purchased a GPS emergency locator device for your remote journeys? I am researching these now for both of us.
    Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. I think this one was one of your best episodes?

    • @WingsandWheelsAlaska
      @WingsandWheelsAlaska  4 года назад

      We have considered a Garmin or some sort of product like that but I'm not sure how often we'd need it for the cost. It's definitely "insurance" in our case, but we might wait until our adventures become even more remote before taking that leap. So far, we have only been in areas where there will be someone that comes along eventually. 😁. We have the urge to do some back country hiking and camping this fall and I (Cynthia) slowly start to increase my COVID lazy Stamina.
      And your message is perfect. I think that's a lesson we learned somewhere along the way. Don't wait. It was eye opening and mind blowing how much my body slowed down in a very short period of time and how long it's taking to build it back up. Time is going by way to fast, and every single day we remind ourselves that NOW is the time. Especially with what's going on in the world. We are teaching our kids this too. "Do it, and do it now".
      Thank you for the compliment on this one. We had a good time. Thank you for researching that, keep us posted.

      HI Christine- Our freezer is small and we do end up shopping at least once a week for fresh stuff. Our freezer has some fish fillets, sausage and shrimp. and the actual fridge is a game of tetris but we are never too far from a place to pick up things we need up here. I guess that's the beauty of Alaska is everything is "laid out" so well when it comes to gas and groceries. You may have to drive far, but there's always something along the way, including restaruants which you'll see we love those too! I think the other animals are too afraid to attack like that. I mean, it happens, it's rare, but I think the only control we have over these things is awareness. I just completed a solo trip and thought I was brave too. Well... I learned a lot about what if feels like to be out there alone. and you nailed it, it's all about PUSHING through. Thanks for being here with us!!

    1) that I'm too old now (59)
    2) doing it alone (divorced)
    3) certain areas like the Tetons are notorious for aggressive Bear activity. Tetons was where I was going to drive my new Tacoma. If I had a gun , I would not have animal or crazy people fears.

It's not going to happen any time soon because I've owned a home for over 20 years and I have a kid or two with "failure to launch" that still live in it. 💁🏻‍♀️. Really pretty scenery in this one. I love all those green hills. Yes my biggest fear is trying to get moved to Alaska and trying to figure out how to get stuff moved from here to there. Canada won’t let you cross to go look for a place to buy you have to live in Alaska in order to let you go home. So it would cost in the neighborhood of$2500-$3000 to come up on the ferry with a vehicle so that I could look for a place to live. Then I can’t bring the truck with the camper on it which is what I would need, because I suppose they then wouldn’t let me drive back across Alaska in that truck which I need to pull the trailer with my household goods from Kentucky back to Alaska. I making everything as hard as I can over this whole Covid thing.

      Hi Terry, I keep coming here to talk to you and reply but every time I hit reply my computer freezes so I'm going to try this again. 😁. This is what we see: People are still relocating here. People are still driving up the Alcan and we pass them with their Class A motorhomes and trailers often. We haven't been very vocal about what we are seeing, but yes we are seeing it. What's happening is they are "relocating" to Alaska and Canada is letting people in for a short period of time and you have to go straight through. You basically have to bite the bullet and say you're moving here to get through and just move on up. A lot of people have moved up here blindly or have flown up and rented short term to find a long term place. I have a friend who does virtual tours of homes in Wasilla and Palmer if you'd like her information. I know there's a loophole in this, it's just not being discussed publicly. Let us know if you need anything.

    Fear, a natural self doubt thought? How to overcome it? If you believe in yourself them I believe that goes a long way to quelling fear.
    Some thoughts:
    If you never never go, you will never never know!
    Be prepared, know what your abilities are and what your equipments abilities are. Then you can be confident in all that you do within those abilities.
    Who gives a flying toss what other people think! If they want to fund my life then just maybe they might get to say something ..... I might not be listening though :-)
    Follow your heart. If you make some mistakes, just don't repeat them, learn from those mistakes.
    Apologies to Ember, your accent made her name sound like Amber to me ...
    Stay safe.

    • @WingsandWheelsAlaska
      @WingsandWheelsAlaska  4 года назад +2

      Ember is used to being called Amber. When she was a pup and we were kennel training her we would use her name so she knew her EXACT name when feeding her or allowing her to do other activities. For example, we would set her food in her kennel and she had to patiently wait until we said "Ember". We threw Amber in there to get her to know the difference and she does! It worked! She's name responsive now. And she forgives you. 😁. And yes, I think most often times mistakes are made is when people think their abilities are greater than they are. As soon as my spidey sense starts to tingle and it "feels wrong" it always is. So it's important not to mix up irrational fears with intuition right? Thanks for being here with us. xo

    Isn't the Instant Pot an amazing thing! I love mine and I definitely plan to try the Siracha on chicken. Agree with your assessment that fear stands in so many peoples way. I'm faced with the fear of going out by myself. Can I do it? Will I be lonely? What if....?

      Agreed. I actually really enjoy being out alone. Don't tell Jim, but sometimes I prefer being alone. This week he was supposed to be on the East Coast for a training class and I was excited to have a week to myself. Instead, he's doing the class interactively online. Lemme just say, he is driving me CRAZY! 😂😂. To overcome that fear, maybe give it a night to yourself, or take a mini trip alone. If you hate it, well then you know. 💁🏻‍♀️Thank you for stopping in. :)

    What breed of dog is Ember? Body and tail look like a Lab, but her face doesn’t? 💕 BTW, beautiful content! Just saw your comments....so a fox red lab, sorry but I don’t see the lab face at all, and my family has had both American and English Labs all of my life. Nevertheless, she is beautiful and definitely has the Lab personality! 💕 Nice to end with Robert Service! 💕

      Hi Leah, Ember definitely has a unique face. We are lab lovers as well. Jim and I growing up with hunting/working labs. Ember is a gem because she was the runt of the litter. When we went to look at the puppies, she crawled into Jims lap and fell asleep. She has more of a "thin" head. I think the only time it shows in her face is when she's pointing. Which these days is only at swaying tree branches or squirrels. Thank you so much for being here with us today!

      It depends on where you are. If you're near standing water or in this case tundra and wet land they're bad in June/July. If you're in places like this and it's overcast with no wind, the mosquitos are intolerable without a thermacell or head net.When the wind picks up or the sun shines bright they take a break from feasting on us.

      Great Question Peter. No. Not yet. As Lily said below, we've heard mixed reviews on the reliability of them in Alaska. There's also weighing "How often we need it". Right now, with the places we are going, around 80% of the time we wouldn't need one, either because we have signal, or because it's populated enough to get help. However, we have found ourselves in places where we would probably push further if we had one, or felt more of a sense of ease. I think as we keep pushing ourselves further, the more necessary it will become, if we can find one that is worth it. Oh and Trekking Poles. They're on our list. For some reason I don't recall my knees and ankles being so weak. 😂😂

I camp and travel on my own in Alberta Canada most areas have no cell phone service. 35 $ CAD per month you can send your tracking info to family and freind and send text or emails find your location and get weather reports. Most important push a button for help. They work off of the GPS satellite system. Im not IT so it took some time for me to set up. However I love mine. Satellites are lower on the horizon in the north so I’m not sure how it works in Alaska. 🇨🇦

    Good morning, today is 7/13/2020. I just started to watch your videos. Most are good. The one I like the best is what's your fear. Now without getting too personal, is there a bio about you both? Where are you from, approximate ages, what do you do for income? I know it costs money to put diesel in the Mercedes. What prompted you doing a van tour? Thank you for reading this and your reply. Happy summer. I'm mid 60's and would love to travel to AK. I'm on social security retirement and my wife is on social security disability. I'm Bill and my boss is Belle. Hope to chat with you sometime.

    • @WingsandWheelsAlaska
      @WingsandWheelsAlaska  4 года назад +1

      HI Bill. We talk a little about who we are, our bios, most of the time it unfolds in our videos as people watch and get to know us. In the beginning it was what most creators go through and making it more about the content then who they are as individuals but it becomes a necessity to open up a little. Jim and I are married and in our mid-40's. Jim cannot publicly discuss his job but he has the ability to retire Federally in three years. I work for the airlines, I did a video on my last trip before all this stuff started happening and flights were cancelled. I don't fly a lot but it's been my career for years and offers me amazing freedom and satiates my Wanderlust. We have children, (it's complicated) and not shared on RUclips. We are also Business Instructors part-time at a local College. Both of our in person classes have gone online allowing us for additional freedom. Van life...that's a LONG story as to how it unfolded but we are prepping for the world tour in three years, slowly getting used to this RUclips thing. We've been putting out videos for about a year but we've been traveling for many many years. It all started traveling across the US on our Duel Sport motorcycles and that dream progressed into this. We're working on combining both. That's the short story. Most importantly we are very happy to have you with us and open books when it comes to our experiences. Feel free to ask questions and say Hello. We enjoy getting to know the people who watch us and listen to constructive feedback. Welcome to our channel Bill and Belle!

    Well I’ll tell ya you guys have scared me a few times with the situations you have gotten yourselves in. Some of the places you stay are so out of the way, I worry for you guys. My fears, I only have one and that is will I be able to get out and join the RV community. As time goes by and I wait to retire my hands continue to get worse. More pain every day. • @WingsandWheelsAlaska

      Reading through the comments this seems to be a common fear for all of us as we grow older. The inability to enjoy retirement life because our minds and bodies aren't in alignment with each other. We are very happy you can live vicariously through us. This makes us want to push and work harder towards our early retirement. My company might offer an early out with all of this going on and I may take it if it's worth it.
