  • In this video we explain how to care for your Spruce Bonsai tree. Watering, pruning, fertilizing - all these topics are discussed. Keeping a Spruce (Norway spruce, or Picea bonsai) alive is not a difficult task, but there are a few things you should be aware of. For more information, also check:

Bonsai trees are planted in small pots with minimal space for water and nutrient reserves. That means you need to water and fertilize your tree regularly. Make sure your Bonsai gets plenty of light, water, and fertilize when needed and your tree is sure to thrive!
This video was filmed in the Japanese garden of Clingendael. If you are not entirely sure about your tree species, you can use this guide to ID your Bonsai:

@2:00 When trying to clean up a whirl on a spruce, do you try to clean up on a couple of branches each time you cut back the branches? Or do you just go immediately to taking off all but one branch using intended design?
Example: I have a larger Colorado Blue Spruce with 2 rather thick whirls, 5 branches each - roughly 2 large a medium and a smaller branch or two. My concern is if I take out the majority of the branches, I will kill the growth above the whirl.
I'm considering taking of the largest branches and keep the smaller ones for this first styling. Maybe instead of cutting them at the trunk, cut them 2 inches from the truck. Therefore, not allowing the tree to dry out and still be able to use the remaining stump as a Jin should I wish to later.
    Thoughts?

Yes that sounds good. Just create a lot of jins out of branches you dont need and keep a few extra branches alive so you keep your options open. Wait 6 months and see how the tree responded and work on it again?

Was this the spruce you styled last year? Or is this a new one
