I have the XL Liftback with the 2E (1300cc) and it was neglected for a few years. Now we changed the head gasket and patched up the exhaust system with very good results. The car is now agile, responsive and surprisingly fast but still quite noisy as the ancient exhaust was not replaced. I usually never get it over 3800rpm but today during an overtake I pushed it to 4000+ and got scared from the brutality of the sound it produced. Is it still safe with these engines to go over 4000rpm even on a car which suffered about 4 years of neglect at one point? I also started getting a slight deep grinding sound when letting off the gas as the rpm drop to around 1580-1480, which worries me because it is persistent on those rpm, but while accelerating it does not occur at all. Could it be something within the transmission, or with the engine compartment?

Hey by the sounds of it something is not right with the motor but it also could be the though-out bearing if it's really munted my brother 2E revs out to 9000rpm no problems but stock engine should be an easy 7000rpm thanks.

@@RuggedGarage It is a legendary car. I believe part of what makes it immortal apart from the great reliable engine and chassis design, is its low weight of around 945kg. This is a key factor in minimizing the stress it sustains from every day driving, combined with its proper weight distribution as seen through sharp cornering. The result is the clutch surviving for over a decade and the engine almost never finding difficulty getting it moving. The way it glides on the road once up to speed, with the steering becoming light as a feather, is also a direct result of good weight distribution. Modern cars weigh well over 1500kg and the difference in bumps and potholes is clear, not to mention clutch and tire wear. A bump that would rattle a modern hatchback to the core will be driven over smoothly and elegantly with the Corolla, even with 30 year old suspension. Truly an engineering miracle I would not trade with anything.

How much brake are you getting I'm thinking of modding my 2E but I thinking it might be better to get the 4-age engine instead what do you think?

hey i just have stock brakes i just used the gearbox to break when going around corners 2E are a fun engine if you want more power off the start get a 4age if you want something different like a modify a 2E engine should get the same or more power than a 4age engine stock thanks.

Hello bro i got question for you i got same car as you but mine is liftback but also 2E carburated engine. i done engine rebuild but didnt touch the carb. Car was going fine for year and this morning i went to work and car started dying on idle. When i push gas pedal it wont die but as soon i left it on idle it dies. Do you know what could be cause of problem thank you friend.

I also has the same car and had the same problem, but i sorted it out. The problem lies at the carburator. You don't need to buy a new carb, just go and get a new carburator kit and rebuild it. The problem are actually that long pin with the rubber on top. it must move up and down or else the car will stop idling at every stop, because it does not get fuel supply into the chambers.

Does it worth it to install a double DCOE on a stock 2e engine?

The more air and fuel you can add to the engine means more hp also the sound of the doce is sick as worth while upgrade if look for more hp out of engine thanks
