  • Luna has never had a calf, much less been milked before. She is used to being around people, but that's about it.
This is the first ten days of taking her from a being nervous heifer to standing still and having a belly milker hanging on her for 15 minutes at a time.
I don't like using stanchions, as they don't fully train a cow to stand still and be milked. Plus they only control the front of the cow and not the back, and so I've seen a lot of cows trained on stanchions to be very 'kicky'.
The way that we train them, they enjoy the feed and the process of milking enough that they either obey and sit still, or the feed is removed from them until tomorrow. Fortunatley, with Luna, we never had to do that (at least not yet). After ten days she is doing very well, although the real test will come after she has her calf.

great video! especially for folks who think it "would be great to have our own milk cow" and not realize the full time work that goes into the whole process. Good input about free stand over stanchions and the importance of paying attention to the 'personality' of the individual animals

Why are you not using something to tie her with to keep her still never seen anyone do this I've milked 52 cows @ 9yrs.old by my self at times.

How do train them to go pee before coming in?

I just wait until she goes and them immediately take her into the shed and give her the grain. This teaches her that when she sees me coming with the milker, the quicker she goes, the quicker she gets to eat.

you could have seriously got your self hurt if she wanted out she would have gotten out this is not how to train a cow. yes cows are not easy to train especially the stubborn Jersey but this is the Dangerous method of training one kick from her and you will not be happy.
