The Jagdpanzer 38 does not use a Pz 38(t) chassis. Hence why there is no (t) in the name. The Jagdpanzer 38 uses a wider and longer hull. The side walls are also sloped outwards. The front negative slope is shallower. The suspension is the same system, but larger and with completely new bogeys due to the sloping hull walls. The drive sprockets, idler wheels, and tracks are of new design. The only interchangeable component between the Jagdpanzer 38 and the Pz 38(t) is the road wheels. The new hull design is the reason why the vehicle is called Jagdpanzer 38, and not Jagdpanzer 38(t). The "t" represents a vehicle using a Czech-designed chassis, as in Pz 38(t).

I remember seeing a weird TV movie in the late 70s that had a Hetzers (G13) in it as a kid. The bizarre thing was that the film was set in the present day and about Soviet special forces covertly capturing a US nuclear missile base in Alaska. At one point the US Army attempts to recapture the base with Infantry, M113 APCs and olive green Hetzers (G13) with US stars on them!
There is a picture with my Dad in Warszaw where he is standing beside the Hetzer which was captured from the Germans by the Polish resistance forces in August 1944 during the uprise. It can be seen at 1.28 in this documentary and also while at repairs a bit later. It was renamed "Chwiat" by the Polish partisans.
I like the Hetzer. I remember using it in World of Tanks as an assault gun, with a heavy howitzer as the modified primary armament, which anno one hits almost every tanks at its rank and the reload is the only punishment which is 8 seconds. But in War thunder...it gets a bit of chance but sadly for balancing the game often I notice an enemy and then got shot down by a T-34-85 or IS-1, maybe a Tiger I.
The remote controlled machine gun is greatly featured in the mobile game called Tank Physics Mobile Vol. 2 where in this game you can play in different tanks and it has realistic tank tracks physics
The best way to truly describe the struggles of the poor Hetzer (which is a fake name that was never used by the germans) is: "it was there to die so the StuG could be elsewhere at more important engagements". in short it was well known it was in every way but size a inferior rushed design that was mainly intended to make up in numbes and cheap cost what it lacked in NOT being a proper Stug. Aside for the loss of Stug production, the Hetzer the was also largely a product of the HUGE numbers of soviet tanks that these things spend most of their time sniping, there where so many T-34's and they where so easy to repair or replace by that point you needed every self-propelled AT gun you could get. the Hetzer had a lot off issues and it was essentially an expendable design that if they got even one real tank with it had already paid itself off. it had extremely cramped space for its 5 man crew, the gun they somehow wedged in was powerful but it took up most of the limited room inside and had poor traverse even for a casemate mounted gun. to top it all off the crews where usually well aware of the true nature of their vehicles as expendable rolling coffins that where there to die so the Stug didn't have too.
The hetzer in the battle of the bulge: winter war 2020 movie is an original and was on the factory floor when the war ended. It will also appear in a new movie called come out fighting.
My hometown, St Louis, as a kid I remember going to the VE Day celebrations at Jefferson Barracks. Someone had a Hetzer that was used there for the battle reenactments.
About remote controlled Mg - some series of late production StuG's also got this feature. Also nice for including footage of "Chwat" from Warsaw Uprising.
I must give credit for including the Godfather of Heavy Metal, Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, standing in front of a Hetzer (at about 0:37). RIP, Lemmy.
Nice one Johnny, you picked a real winner here, shame it didn't appear earlier in the war it could have been a game changer. The cinematic list is great, MORE to catch up up on lol, thank you.
The Hetzer's machine gun mount was a pretty polarising topic back in the day. Many officers in the chair force (Stuhlwaffe?) didn't like them, thinking that compared to a normal mount they were less accurate, and that the protection it offered encouraging soldiers to use it more (Hetzers are supposed to stay hidden)

Another fact is that because of it's small size, the engine and the crew compartment were close together so the crew was exposed to the heat of the engine. At winter that was a great advantage for the crew who stayed warm but in the summer months, it was unbearable....
The Panzerkampfwagen 38(t), which the 'Hetzer' was based on, was the best tank used by Germany in the Battle of France. The Panzerkampfwagen 38(t) was a Czechoslovakian tank the LT vz. 38 Lehký tank vzor 38, Light Tank model 38). In fact the (t) stands for tschechisch, the German word for Czech. So the best tank used by Germany was in 1940 was Czech. It would be used again in Operation Barbarossa but with the German tank crew watching their 37 mm AP round bouncing of the T-34 they decided it was not up to the job. Some would, as you pointed out, be converted to the Marder III with the use of captured Soviet 76.2 mm F-22 divisional field guns or the German 7.5 cm PaK 40. The 'Hertzer' used the 7.5 cm PaK 39 L/48. There were several other modifications carried out, including the Flakpanzer 38(t) anti-aircraft gun carrier, of which about 140 were produced. The Aufklärungspanzer 38(t) (designation Sd.Kfz.140/1) was a reconnaissance vehicle which used the turret from the Sd.Kfz. 222 armoured car. And a support version armed with a 75 mm KwK 37 L/24 (and MG 42) gun mounted in the modified superstructure was also designed of which just two were built. The name 'Hetzer' (German for "chaser") seems to have been added later post war addition. Chaser does seem to be an odd name for something which was best utilised as an ambusher. In one version or another the Panzer 38(t) was used throughout the war.
There are two wartime documents which prove the Germans themselves called the Jagdpanzer 38 the "Hetzer". Another important distinction is that while the Marder III, Grille series, Awfklarungspanzer 38(t), and Flakpanzer 38(t) used the actual Pz 38(t) chassis, the Jagdpanzer 38 does not. The hull is an entirely new design -- longer, wider, with sloped sides and a shallower front slope. The suspension bogeys are redesigned, as are the drive sprockets, idler wheels, and the tracks. The only interchangeable component between the Jagdpanzer 38 and the Pz 38(t) is the road wheels. The new hull design is the reason why the vehicle is called Jagdpanzer 38, and not Jagdpanzer 38(t). The "t" represents a vehicle using a Czech-designed chassis.
my only critique here is that you didn't mention that the armor was Siemens-Martin style non face hardened steel. It was not to the quality of a proper tank or StuG. It had the approximate stopping power of a 14.5mm face hardened plate found on a 251.

I am surprised you are forgetting the most notable engagement involving Hetzers, in which a column led by Hitler himself was annihilated by Gotenks in DBZ Fusion Reborn.
StuG IV was created specifically on Hitler's order due to the success of the StuG III G combined with the bombing of the Alkett factory (as mentioned in this video) which was the largest StuG III assembly plant. Basically Hitler wanted more StuGs, so he had them place the superstructures on Pz IV chassis. So it would make sense to include both in the same video.
*sees Johnny made a video about the Hetzer* cool, i wonder if he's gonna put some footage of Lemmy rolling around in his Hetzer in this *sees footage of Lemmy and his Hetzer less than a minute into the video* my man Johnny \m/
For clarity the 38(t) chassis used by the Hetzer is a modified design to accommodate the weight and hull.
It uses the Same Parts and Leafspring Suspension that were already being Manufactured in Czech Factories . The Hull and Tracks are Wider and the Lower sides if the Hull was at an angle

Well put sir....
The Germans sold some Pz. 38(t)'s to Hungary, Slovakia and Romania.
I have never seen the hetzer in movies wtff this is new to me
my only critique here is that you didn't mention that the armor was Siemens-Martin style non face hardened steel. It was not to the quality of a proper tank or StuG. It had the approximate stopping power of a 14.5mm face hardened plate found on a 251.
Love your video
Hetzers gonna Hetz
Johnny if you at one point venture back to melee weapons could you by any chance cover balisong/butterfly knife?
One of the more flashier "bad guy" knives around according to media.
Yah that'd be fun! I will. And brass knuckles too
The Hetzer's remote machine gun turret is the ancestor of modern remote weapons stations, or RWS.
In micie warshow 44 is also hetzer in back off the phanter tank during hause defend scene
I love the way the Jagdpanzer 38 looks, but no way I'd want to get in one!
Johnny, if you haven't already, could you do the Churchill in the movies? Because I feel as if it is a very over looked beast we designed. Thanks
I love the Churchill! It's almost nowhere to be found, though, but I should be able to at least get some decent gaming footage.
@Johnny Johnson thanks mate, if you need any gaming footage from other games, just give us a comment on any of my videos. Better than giving away my Email or discord in a public area. Oh also the battle for Hill 112 in France was good history for the Churchill
I love Bo tie gaming and the hetzer I call it the lunchbox
Hetzer's gonna Hetz!
Hello Johnny Johnson. If you see this or not. But i have a Cobi model of the Hetzer.
Didn't think GuP could be so educational 😆
every time we rent a car from Hertz i always wish they would have a rent a tank division.
Didn't Lemmy from Motorhead have one? you've got a pic of him with one at the start. I thought I remember reading about him owning one.
I think it was just an interview with him trying one out. I couldn't find much on the background of that interview but it's pretty cool. The guy loves tanks.
3:07 it uses a lot of parts from the 38t but not built on it. The hetzer hull is about 2 inches wider and 4 inches longer then the 38ts
Thanks for adding this. It would have been more accurate for me to say built on the design, I suppose. 🙏
@@JohnnyJohnsonEsq yeah.
@@JohnnyJohnsonEsq it's one of those things of where you don't notice it unless your looking at the specs or have them side by side
now that we have the Hetzer we need the Panzer IV
'Hetzer gonna Hetz'
I would like to combine that with both Stug III and M3 Grant Tank.
Makes me wonder, would it be count as czechoslovakian tank, since it was built on it's chassy?
Squire: BLOODY LUNCHBOX
I am surprised you are forgetting the most notable engagement involving Hetzers, in which a column led by Hitler himself was annihilated by Gotenks in DBZ Fusion Reborn.
Loved the Hetzer right.
Jadgpanzer = Panzer Abwehr Kanone mounted on chassis with plating.
I scared this thing in Warthunder, it's thicc tho
Johnny, we need to discuss a very serious issue. Dub or sub?
Haha that is a serious issue! Dub is okay for things like GuP and DBZ but imma need sub for like Akira, Full Metal Alchemist etc.
4:28素晴らしいなこれは
damn remote control turret in hetzer never knew that german was ahead of its time... as we see on modern LAVs and humvees etc..
When you talk about the stug, do you also include stug IV, or only III? Also do jagdpanzer IV.
Thanks as usual sir
*sees Johnny made a video about the Hetzer*
cool, i wonder if he's gonna put some footage of Lemmy rolling around in his Hetzer in this
*sees footage of Lemmy and his Hetzer less than a minute into the video*
my man Johnny \m/
Haha he deserved to be there 🤘
With a flamethrower? I'll bet Goering came up with that. I know that he was Luftwaffe. But there's no denying that he was a flamer, lol.
They were used exclusively during Operation Nordwind during the latter stage of the Ardennes Offensive (Battle of the Bulge).
U missed the engine part
Hetzers gonna Hetz!
