Get A Loud Harley Stereo For A Lot Less - DIY Harley Audio Upgrade

- Loud Harley Davidson Stereos aren't a luxury, they're a bit of a necessity if you want to hear your music at highway speeds. I have never been happy with the complexity of my @rockfordfosgate stereo, and lately have had a problem with a short in the wiring. While replacing the rear end of my @harleydavidson Ultra Limited I decided to completely eliminate they old stereo and start over. I decided to go with a simple, but loud 2 speaker set up. I kept my Rockford speakers, but I went with an in-fairing amp by Hogtunes, specifically the Wild Boar Audio 400.2R 200 Watt x 2 with REMIT. The install was easy, I did NOT have to cut my saddlebags, the sound is fantastic and loud enough to hear at any speed. I found a few bundles on Amazon that are even better deals than what I bought and include speakers.

Informative video, thanks. I'm looking to upgrade the worthless stock H-D sound system in my Road Glide ST. Two things: (1) AC/DC sounds great at 80mph (2) when can I swing by to pick up that Marshall Stack?
Dude, it’s a fridge!!! A Marshall stack full of cold beer! I’m a huge fan of the Wild Boar setup still. I can reach out to them if it would help, DM me on Instagram…
@@ProfessionalMonkey My Les Paul is going to sound awful through that fridge
@@BillyLaneChoppers the more beer I drink the better a guitarist you’ll become!
Put a Wild Boar 300 amp in 150 x 2 with some Hertz speakers in my Streetglide. Now I can hear it on the highway, I'll never win a stereo competition but atleast, I can hear my tunes rolling down the road. Also went with this amp as it mounts under batwing, another reason I didn't pay a crap load for the Rockford Fosgate and take up bag space. Thanx for taking the time to make great videos and Ride Safe
You made my day! I got the Wild Boar installed at Laconia several months ago by The Fairing Exchange folks, and I love it too. It seems to be poo pooed by many, but I agree with you they're great. I checked the Wild Boar system after "The Ornery One" had it installed on his. Two 400watt amps IN THE FAIRING, nothing in bags, no cutting. I've been 80 on the highway and still haven't had to turn it beyond 2/3 of the volume. $800 less then JM, and Rockford. Same 2 way speakers up off the cone. Love it, great sound!
Local Jacksonville FL guys...Fairing Exchange are good peeps
Got the wild boar speakers and amp in the fering for less then 1k sounds amazing even after two years
Legitimate reason to upgrade your stereo. AC/DC rocks.
More of a EW&F, Parliament, Commodores, with a little Milsap, Straight, and Jones on the side.
But I’ll look into this for my RG.
Thanks for the info👍🏽
Did the same exact thing . Used the hogtunes front speakers , added a 2nd hogtunes amp snd the Rockford stage 2 bag 6x9s and sounds incredible. Loud as Phyck . And no heavy bass just solid road volume
Did you have to flash the radio?
I had an Alpine Amp sitting in my garage from my Vulcan Vaquero. I decided to put her on the Road Glide with Alpine type R 6.5 speakers with the amp bridged to 2 channels 90 watts RMS to each channel. Man, I can only put the volume to a little less than 3/4 way. Loud as shit and I can clearly hear the music well past 90 mph. All I had to buy was a Biketronics module, Amp mount and some speaker adapter plugs. Took about 1 hour to install. Friggin love it
Absolutely perfect!.
I have a 2017 ultra. Agree the stock sound system sucks above 40mph.
A buddy I ride with spent $4500 on 4 speaker, 3amp HD/RF system. Loud as $hit. I will not spend that much money.
Insane. I did upgrade my 2 front speakers to RF.
Have been researching amps.
Another buddy spent $1500 for amp and 2 speakers at HD dealer.
He doesn't do his own work. Watching your vid,
This is what I'll get.
Awesome , thanks
Glad it's all better now. In my 2017 SGS I did the SD 400.4Evox and Hertz 6.5s set up and was under 700, with epic loud tunage. Disturbed, mettalica, zz top, ac/DC, 5fdp...ohh yeah!
I went with Hogtunes speakers and amp on my 21 SGS right after I bought it and love it! I run TAB Zombies and have never not had enough volume at any speed. Good choice and affordable!
I completely agree. I really like this setup, especially for the cost.
My 2011 ultra I used a Kenwood blue tooth radio, kicker Amp and hog tunes speakers. Also a new wiring harness. About a grand but sounds great and was in my price range. Enjoy your channel.
Hertz Neo speakers hands down the way to go!!!
My next head unit and it will be my 3rd head unit, first factory SUCKED BALLS! Currently have the Sony AX-7000 with Rockford Fosgate 400 watt amp with 8 speakers. The sound is nice but it's very limited in sound where the new head unit comes with a 13 band equalizer set up provided great sound at speed!I know I sound like a pitch guy but honestly, I have heard it in the flesh and holy shnit! That thing is amazing!
I am getting the Rockford Fosgate on my 20 ultra this winter but getting the after market not harley's version and they install the amp under the fairing. Like you didn't want to lose bag space because we travel. The bag speakers are going to be fine with are luggage we have. Can't wait.
I would stay away from Rockford, you will be disappointed. Reach out to Carlos Ramírez at NVS audio. Look him up on RUclips.
I had a Hog-Tunes Amp and speaker setup on my 2011.. DUMPED IT.. Umm, it was OK at speed, and yeah, makes sense, highs and mids are all you hear while riding, but I'll tell you this, I bough two Kicker 300W Power sports amps (179.00 each) and I changed my factory 5.25" speakers to 6.75" ($99.00/ Pair) speakers (YES, they'll fit, and YES you'll need two 5.25" to 6.5" speaker adapters for the front fairing speakers). I installed Kicker's 6.75" speakers on all four corners of my Ultra Classic (those speakers have the same mounting holes as their 6.5" speakers, so converting is not an issue. I REALLY need to do a video of my install and share it with you and your viewers. Once you break the speakers in, IT. SOUNDS. AWESOME.. Look for it, coming up sometime in December. I put a SHIT TON of effort into designing the system and making it sound GREAT, not just "good". At speed (65 MPH+) you'd friggin LOVE IT!! and for less than $600 WITH speakers, it'll blow your MIND!! Clutch sounds AWESOME on it!!
Anything that Clutch sounds good on!!!!
Did the amps come with specific wiring harnesses or did you have to get those too?
@@concepcionortiz2898 Came with absolutely everything I needed.
It sure looks like a mighty nice stereo that's short on the dollar. Good to see you happy about your stereo build. Eric
Thank you!
Hog tunes is what I use. Didn’t mention it because I’ve always assumed Hog tunes was an inferior, on a budget amp option compared to Rockford Fosgate. Nice to hear you think it’s better than RF. I have the 4 speaker setup, two front two rear. The glove compartments are a great space for long trips. 😊
I'm sure the RF is good, it's just way more expensive and I don't know if it's worth it. This is loud for less.
When dealing with the parts guy at my old H-D dealership (Eldridge’s) that’s no longer an H-D dealership due to a huge reshuffle in H-D dealings here in Canada, he told me that Hog Tunes is a division of Harman Kardon which is by no means inferior.
@@pelosishammer I just checked and Hogtunes is privately owned by one individual. It's funny how rumors start and become gospel, right?
@@ProfessionalMonkey, I stand corrected. And it just goes to prove you can’t always trust your Harley parts guys. It turns out that Hog Tunes does all of their design in-house and have a contracted manufacturer mass-produce to their specs, but it isn’t and never was Harman Kardon. I will admit when I’m wrong.
My "guy", is like 60ish and owned his own bike shop since he was a little turd. He pushes plug and play Hogtunes before RF as well. He is not sponsored for audio sales. It made me feel more confident about my purchase of Hogtunes when he told me that.
I just upgraded the speakers from stock to Rockford Fosgate in my Jeep and added a Rockford Fosgate 10” sub. Sounds way better than the factory bottom of the line system. At some point in the not-too-distant future, I’ll be adding a Rockford Fosgate amp as well.
Man, great video. You nailed it! Exactly what I want, loud and easy, clean install. 2 great advices in 1 video? 👍👍👍 Was great to see how excited you got. Makes a difference to put the own dough on the line and learn that it paid off. Satisfying, isn't it?
When I get my FLHTP, both of your tips will be installed.
Just need to knock off those medical bills, first 😉
Ride safe 🤙
when i did an up grade to my 11 ultra, went with JM corp out of AZ, have 14 speakers got direct with military discount, then bought a refurbish 500 4ch amp. of course didn't do all at once, started with the speakers, set at time and 2 ch 400 amp. it is amazing at just changing with good speakers to the factory system how that improves sound, my 12 triglide is just that. one thing nice about JM, warranty is nice on them, just don't loose receipt for exchange, had sent back pair speakers and replaced, just shipping cost. was having issue, sent email and response within hr when wasn't expecting for few days.
"Something that goes BANG real loud". hahaha. Got a chuckle from that. Nice audio option you're presenting btw.
Nice! I’m running a sound stream HD9813RG touch screen radio, Biketronics BT4180 Amp (180 rms per channel) 1400 watts. DB drive WDX Moto CD 6.5’s in fairing, (4) pioneer TS-6900 pros in lids, and (2) 8” pioneers midbass (TS-M800). I can tell you your ears will bleed 🩸 cranked up all the way. As you said, you don’t need to go super high end , competition sound to have good quality music. Nice video!
I went with biketronics on another bike and wasn’t happy with them. Might give this a try, I’m no totally not happy with my ultra’s stock system but may upgrade! Great video!
Damn beer and fat fingers but you know what I meant!!
Soundz 6.5 carbon fiber speakers are awesome. Have them in my road glide
Exactly.. loud on the highway.. not trying to win any competition.. affordable.. I have struggled getting decent sound and replaced everything multiple times trying to get tolerable sound.
Thank you for the information… looks like a winter day project for me !!
AC DC Is one of my favorite bands
Another darn good Monkey video with solid advice & tips; thanks! I've already spent around $3K+ (all-in includes color matched speaker lids from HD) for the 4-speaker (2-fairing & 2-Lids) Rockford-Fosgate HD Stage-2 setup (1 amp inside clutch side Bag). Also added the HD SirrusXM module. Although pricey, I do enjoy it all the time, fine at freeway speeds and no issues. Use the HD Audio app on my phone for the 7-band graphic equalizer. That being said though, next bike, plan to look into the Hog Tunes equipment and save a significant chunk of money. Thanks again!
On another note: Noticed the subs is showing 74.9K...closing in on 75K. You've come a long way Brother in last few years...Congrats!

I went with Sinister Sound 3 years ago and been very happy with just the AMP and 2 speaker system, Since I finally got the bike paid off I am doing some upgrades I been waiting to do and recently I got a set of lowers and today Sinister is adding 2 more speakers in the lowers later today at BBB. Thanks for the video.
Right on! Have fun bud!
If this is underwater you have other issues cracked me up . Really enjoy your vids , thank you
So, I didn't like the fact that the amps were in the saddlebags either, i did buy the stage 2 HDRF speakers, and the RF 400x4 amp, install kit. cost me with the speakers($1200) approx. if I am running off of my USB, it jams, some songs on spotify play better than others. and I can here it all at 85-90. cool that you came out with a stereo upgrade.
I have the same exhaust and installed Hogtunes speakers only. I can hear my music at 80+ without the amp. I do have to turn the volume to max, but for now, I can hear it. Still debating this amp.
If you have the good speakers but no amp your only getting about a tenth of what they can do. There is a less expensive amp option that will give you ten times the clarity and volume. Here is the link amzn.to/3Md20S7
I'm doing my egs soon except I'm going to try going without the head unit just my phone to the amp with DS18 BT-Two Bluetooth Receiver - IP65 Water resistant receiver
The video was the best I’ve seen so far , not all that techno BS just simple straight to the point. Can you post the link to the amp tray? Thanks for the help.
It comes with the amp, but here's the link to the amp kit amzn.to/43TsFf2
Great upgrades like the locked door idea
New Rockford amp goes in the fairing on the Roadglide. Old systems were 400 watt amps. New are 800 watts.
I’m getting the Wild Boar amp and fairing speakers put in at a rally tomorrow for $999, along with an inner fairing and a couple of other thing at the same time
Sweet!
Great info... I have been trying to figure this same issue out since I bought my Road Glide Limited.. factory sucks, stage 2 is way overpriced. I will give this setup a try...
I am happy as hell with it, really. I am toying with doing the speakers also now. Its going to cost you more since you have a 4 speaker setup, but still less than the Harley option. Here is the link I found for the kit you need. It replaces your stock speakers front and rear, front grills, and comes with two amps and all the install stuff. You really can do this yourself and I don't think your stereo would even need to be flashed since you already have a 4 speaker setup: amzn.to/3EqAYoy
Thanks for the reply.. I did see this kit last night.
This simple stereo upgrade has been frustrating to figure out honestly. Everyone has an opinion and most are polar opposite of each other.. lol. I trust your judgment and I will try this setup out. Thanks again.
I enjoyed your video. Look forward to the next one. Your neighbor from Boca. Stuart. I shop at Alligator Alley too. 👍
I just happen to have tree fitty laying around. Oh damn, the Mrs found it.
Funny I’ve had several open wires on my system as well three soo far. Wish I would of never bought the amps from Harley but I agree speakers sound great in quality
I upgraded my speakers to polk audio and changed out my windshield in hopes to hear my music over 60 mph on my road glide. It helped but barely. This is definitely my next step. The stock tunes on roadglides is terrible!
Yeah, if you didn't add an amp it's not going to do much. There is still only like 15 watts pushing them.
Fantastic! Anything loud that pisses off my neighborhood HOA and I’m in!
AC/DC at 80...HELL YEA! How do U know me so well bro?? Always love your honest, no BS reviews, and informative content, MY MAN! Others should take note... "dude, it's a backup for your backup for your backup, some of us are just normal human beings"
I think we may have gone to different schools together, from 1 normal human to another...🤣 😂!
Yep. I just want two loud speakers. I know I won't get much bass but I'm willing to compromise that because I don't want to sacrifice saddlebag storage space. And I also don't want to spend a small fortune and modify my bike that much either. I heard the BOSS Audio Systems BHD3F kit at a Moto Sport event and for a mere $550 it was freaking awesome. A great entry-level kit for anyone on a budgt. I don't know how long it will last, etc., but it sounds great! Personally, I'm going to only budget about $1,000 for a 2-stage kit. The WildBoar kit seems like it'll be perfect for me.
D&D audio, 399 for the amp 149 to 299 for speakers a pair, got mine through woofersetc out of California they will even give 10 percent off. My system is louder than any others I have heard. I should have played it for you at broken spoke
I drowned out my buddy's 8-inch straight stacks, on his 475 Catapiller diesel pete, we hen we pull away from a red-light together "/
I'm not really sure what Rockford fosgate kit they sold you but for what you're wanting there amp mounts in the fairing just like that hog tunes amp. I have my Rockford fosgate amp in my fairing on my road bike but it also came with a street glide bracket. the fosgate amp I have also powers the 6x9s in my lids which surprisingly take up very little space and that whole setup is plenty loud enough to last good rock music
Yup, if you buy the kit from RF it goes in the fairing. If you buy HDs version of the RF system it goes in the bag. The RF system is a lot more expensive no matter where you get it though. I didn’t want to spend that much all over again. I’m really happy with this system. I’m still running the RF speakers though.
I’m gonna Rey one out on my 22 street glide special. Was just about to do the same Rockford fosgate at my harley dealer $1700
I have the wild boar setup on my Road Glide... everything else was insane on price.
Im really happy with it!
@@ProfessionalMonkey I actually wanted the Kicker setup, but it kind of came down to what we could actually get. So many things are soooo backordered it's not even funny. I may swap out the speakers down the road, but for now it'll do the trick
I had Hog Tunes on my 2007 Street Glide and it worked great. I installed an aftermarket Rockford set up in my 19 Road Glide Special just two front speakers. My dealership charged me $64.50 to flash the radio which is 30 minutes of labor. Not to bad.
Speakers clearly show "weather proof" not water proof. Looking forward to the soon-to-be-released video on how it performs in the rain. Or - take it outside, turn it on, and get the hose out. Thanks!
I really appreciate your insight on many items. I was hoping maybe you would have an idea about the speaker noise on a new install of the Rockford
Fosgate / Harley Davidson. Volume is completely off and you can still here speaker white noise. The dealer is trying to tell me this is normal do you have any guidance on this? Appreciate any help doesn't seam right to me.
I have a buddy that has that issue on his rear tour pack speakers on his street glide. No info from Harley.
That's news to me. I wasn't happy with my system before, but not because of any white noise issue.
RF has a under fairing kit, always did. Carlos Ramirez would have made you a plate & you could have mounted 2 sound digital Evo amps. My RF kit will shrill your ears.
db 6.5’s in the fairing and a sound digital amp
Not a professional?! But that’s what your channel is called! 😂
Ya got me there…
If I pull the trigger on a sound system, I'm going to shake the ground at about a 9.8 on the Richter scale, right now I'm sticking to factory stock, I'm happy enjoying the sound of my engine rumbling down the Hwy. I'd have to spend $5,000 to get above the sound of the pipes onmy bike "/
I bet I can get you over ur exhaust for much less than $5k
@@timsstereosystems3544 I don't know about that, the $3,500, I spent on the Kenwood/Polk audio/punch audiophile/clairion/kicker/Savard IQ, 10-speaker, multi-amp, system I had in my 93 Isuzu p/u couldn't do it at 137dbs "/

Another great informative video! Thanks for the content
Flash four speaker? Don't own a dresser so I may be out of line? These radio's? Don't they have an rca input? If so wouldn't that be the easiest configuration.
Example in my car I have 3 rca inputs 2 for front and rear speakers and the other for the sub amp..
Now decades ago the old kraco 5 band power eq was wired radio into eq out to speakers... Is that the way a bike is?
🤣🤣yes i have seen a clip of Steven, he has gotten a bit Fluffy lmao. i do agree with your choice of freeing up bag space and just wanting to hear the radio. i prefer Ramstein or Jerry Reed, 5FDP, you get the idea lol. can you get a aftermarket radio that can get XM /Serus satellite radio? i have looked but no luck. i maybe looking in wrong place . i only checked JP and DK though. good vid
There is a head deck replacement, but there is a satellite radio add on for stock Harley stereos 2014+ for sure.
@@ProfessionalMonkey 👍👍
Damn u could totally fit another one in there. Bad ass.
Thanks for the content.
Sorry brother but your dealer bent you over. RF put my amp in the fairing on my Roadglide. I love it. Gave Harley big bucks putting in lame ass boom stage 2 worst money I ever spent. Good luck with it.
The RF system goes in the amp, but HDs RF system goes in the bag. It’s weird.
Does the radio have to be flashed by the dealer? Is that just for optimal sound? Or will it not work if not flashed?
You can't be sure till it's done. It should work no matter what but it wont give the best sound unless its flashed that way.
Great video. Have you ever owned a motorcycle that you have not done anything to it other than just turn key and ride. Just curious
Sure, cause I was broke, but I have always wanted to change things to the way I want them.
I ordered the advan black front lowers with the speaker pods and a set of hurts 165 speakers and I’ve been looking for a amp I wander if I could use two of those and put a other set of hurts up top
Yup. The amps are intended to be piggy backed for more speakers. Two of the 225s would work for that.
Random question, I saw an unplugged coax cable next to the plugs to the speakers. Was that for the antenna you said you had to move but yours was already moved?
I believe that was the antenna cable that went all the way back to the tourpack, I have rerouted it since then.
Right on, thanks for the reply. I don't mean to be all eagle eyes, it was just something I happen to notice and was curious.
So no need for lid speakers? I have been looking for something that isn’t going break the bank.
Nah, you can’t hear lid speakers up front anyway.
Did you have to flash the computer for the amp?
Not so far. I might have them verify that it is set up for 4 speaker no amp just to be sure, but it is working great.
@@ProfessionalMonkey I know a lot of time if it’s not reflashed with a better tuned flash the speakers won’t last as long
Did you get a chance to tune the amp?
How did you set your gains?
Larry
I'm a novice, so I put the fairing back on and rode it. There is a selector on the back of the amp that is to be set depending on your setup (factory head deck with just two speakers, etc.)
Awesome video
Thanks!
pac sni35 into an nvx vadm4 bridged to 2 channels to a pair of ds18 zt6 pros, and you'll have your ears bleeding with good sound quality if you eq it a bit at the source (4k hz overlap between the mid and tweet make it have a hump there, no big deal, turn it down) and the whole setup will cost you $350 ish.
Since you have the lower fairings, have you not thought about putting the speakers in there as well?
I used to have them in the old system and didn’t really think they added anything.
Maybe I should just watch the whole video before I comment.
Thanks, for sharing, I wonder if you are in Kansas?🎉
Nope. South Florida. I am originally from Missouri though.
use the RMS rating to determine the power handling of your speakers and amp output
I can't seem to find that number, but I am not that worried about it. It's loud and sounds great, I am happy.
by the way highway to hell was my wedding song. you have great taste in music
@@mississippidrifter5960 😂😂😂😂😂
Do you have to flash the radio with that setup coming from factory components on a 22 SGST?
Yep. Check with HogTunes about the best setup, but 4 speaker no amp is the flash that was recommended in the manual.
FYI the hog tunes is 4ohms and Harley says their speakers are 2ohm might be an issue
So far it’s fine? I put about 150 miles on today no trouble.
It might last forever. I just heard you shouldn’t mix them but I’m not professional either
Great video !! Are you planning on going over to Daytona for biketoberfest ?
Yep! We’ll be there. I’ll put something out probably Friday with the schedule, wtc

Hit me up if you want a good recording of a couple songs that you can use in videos. I'll give you free use of them, from my days of trying to be a rock star. LOL
Did I make it in before everyone from Facebook chimes in with...
1. If you need music, drive a car.
2. The rumble of the motor is all the music I need.
3. Just wear a helmet with speakers, why must everyone else listen to your music?
Well, because I'm a 42 year old that still remembers fondly when I was 19 and my amp and subs cost more than the car and we cruised the strip with a Sony Discman and a wired cassette adapter. That's why.
Exactly. Everyone else knows what's best, right?
So how can I PM you I'm down from Boston until 23 oct. I'm staying on Mayport Navel station I'm retired 100% disabled Vet. and just bought a 2011 Ultra Limited and want to replace the Shocks, Front and rear brake pads, and thinking AMS oil change .
Best upgrade I did was unplug it all and go Helmet Bluetooth. Had new stereo with mega amp in fairing and Rock-Fos speakers. Let's face it, you're never gonna get laid because you have a loud stereo on your bike.
Now I can blast my ears with fav tunes, make a phone call with the push of a button, get directions spoken softly in my ear.
The only drawback??... got to where a helmet, which I don't always want to do. But I'm in a helmet state.
Did you upgrade your CVO systems too?
Be careful putting that loud bang thing in there it gets HOT down there. Lol
Loud is one thing, but does it sound good? I’ve heard some stereos on Harley’s that are loud af, but they sound like garbage!
It sounds good to me, but I do wish I had the Wild Boar Audio speakers since they are designed for each other. My HD speakers are 2 ohm and made for their stuff so I am sure I am not getting the best it could be. When going 75 - 80 mile an hour you need punching power to get through the wind noise. Perfect tone is going to be lost against wind noise anyway. This is a solution for hearing your stereo for less at highway speeds, it's not for audio competition, but it still sounds awesome to me.
🤣🤣🤣 boom boom boom, I’m going to irritate everybody in the parking lot.
That’s the goal for them ISNT it?
It sure is
I am right here. Geez. I’m turning my radio back up to not hear you guys. 😂
That’s what everybody says at first, I just want two speakers I can hear on the freeway, until they hear a bike with some real music on the freeway.
Yadadada turn that darn thing up!!
Ha! Today on my ride I figured out that all the way up is too damn loud… 😂
Where are you guys staying at sturgis this year?
Great upgrade and loving the videos but Mr. Professional I beg of you, in the name of crippling anxiety please tidy up your garage. The bottle of Meguiar’s by the door has been laying there for weeks 😢
