Last weekend certainly was a little disappointing, but it was more the nature of the incident and how confusing it was that left a strange taste in the mouth. A week on and thanks to you guys we seem to have a few answers as to why the pedal came off.
The combination of a new shoe and not very good shoe cover seems to have been the culprit.
We also take the chance to check in with Ben Carman, for those of you new to that channel, Ben was involved in a terrible accident late last year. His rehab has been long, but he is starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel.

Good luck with the recovery Ben. Thanks for giving us an update
Chris, i'd bet that air density has a fair bit to do with Akuna times being lower in winter for the same power, it'll be much more dense in lower temperatures, so you'll experience more drag for a given speed.
For sure, Alex Dowsett went into quite a bit of detail about air density in cycling time trials in some of his content on youtube
Yep, air density and air pressure. More likely higher hpa in winter. The average hpa at sea level is 1013 hpa, it lowers at altitude but can also be affected by baromatic air pressure or in storm conditions.
@@madmonkeycycling9098 Air pressure has nothing to do with drag though, besides its influence on air density.
Higher temperature and humidity both reduce air density, so there is less air resistance in those conditions all else being equal. Even slight changes in wind can make a big difference too though.
it’s just the increased air pressure and density you get during winter months, so your ride times will be slower. I’ve experienced the same things doing back-to-back time trials on the same day, one in the morning where air pressure density is higher, and the other in the afternoon where air pressure is less. Higher watts, yet slower in the morning and lower watts and faster in the afternoon.
In all honesty I reckon the conditions last weekend we absolutely ideal! Cheers for the comment CR
I’m still perplexed why no-one had an Allen key for you to screw your pedal back on. Even more so that you didn’t have a tool kit in the team car.
Not a multi tool in sight?
Good to see Ben up and about. Yes p[lease, how to pick riders for races. Good luck at Le Tape!!
Thanks Wendy! Yeh it’s been a tough few months for the man, but the last few weeks have been great for him. Thanks for the comment as always.
One thing the Pug won’t be doing is looking up & over the fence. I once taunted a friends Pug from a balcony above their yard & he just couldn’t look up to see where the sound was coming from. Such innocent fun.
Has to be Hawkesbury Lookout (Alpe De Heights on Strava) of a repeated climb, a few switchbacks but times I feel rubbish, times I feel good, and times can be the exact same, times can be seperate by 1-2mins
I’ll have to check that one out, is that the Springfield road climb?
@@ChrisMillerCycling Springwood Rd, then the climb and then keep going along Hawkesbury Rd to Springwood - up past the water tower for the full segment.
I hope Ben will heal up completely and quickly!
I’ll tell you one thing, he is working so hard on his rehabilitation, if one man can come back, it is Ben Carman.
@@ChrisMillerCycling Glad to hear, I have huge respect for his efforts and mental strength which go into his comeback!
Definitely interested in hearing about your selection process... also I'm still waiting on the team budget and sponsors video😉
Ah, good one. Makes sense now. I reckon your shoe cover material got stuck/wedged in the gap between the assioma 'bulge' and the crank...then the rotational effect spins the pedal off. The belgie style covers always have loose material around where you make the 'snip' for the cleats it seems?. Oh, and having run Record mechanical from 1997 until switching to record EPS in 2016, I agree - probs would struggle to go back to mechanical ;-)
Hey mate thanks for the comment. So the “shoe covers” were actually just cheap socks we bought at the op shop the night before. The theory was to use them for the decent and then take them off and give them to Brittany who was waiting at the bottom of the climb. Turns out those “cheap socks” were a lot more expensive then first thought 😁
sick video chris! what camera and lens do you use to film your sit down videos?
good to see the rear flashing taillight...feel safer with one on
My 4iiii crank power meter went off with crazy power numbers like that one day for no apparent reason and stayed that way. Tried resetting by removing the battery (normal first step) but other than trying to reset through the phone app (would connect but wouldn’t reset) it just had to go back to the factory for a replacement. Seems when these things get an unusual knock or other goes wrong, that’s it. They don’t fix easily or at all
Hey Chris, I would love to see a video on team selection.
So as I asked on your other video about this you effectively took the spacer out by putting the shoe cover into the gap between pod and crank. BTW .. did you have the spacer in? Lesson learnt
Maybe air temperature with the added affect of road temperature will see increase in times and speed, just an idea..
What camera are you using? That is very good quality 4K I know but what make and model?
Hi Chris, I’m looking forward to seeing you and a few of Team Nero in BrisVegas soon. Any insights on what you and the team will be up to?
Hey Michael, at this stage we are hearing there is a criterium on the Friday night, we will certainly try to get to that. Once we know more details we will post something about our movements.
We have the same thing here in Toronto where it can be -30 on a bad winter day and 40C on a brutal summers day (with super high humidity). it's a weird thing. FWIW, I don't ride colder than -10 windchill... just saying. Also, mechanical gruppo only for me. I would hate to be 'that guy' who ran out of charge and forced to finish in the small ring. I have bad memories of a friend with Mavic Zapp shorting out back in the day in a wet race. Mechanical may shift slower, but I don't race much and I'm 56... don't care. I want reliable shifting. Mechanical campy always and forever. Got the tattoo to prove it.
Norton Summit. I'm fitter by a decent margin compared to when i got my pb and i can't get within cooee of it
It's probably the air density. Closer weather generally means higher air density = slower
Why planes in the desert take off in the morning rather than the middle of the hot day, more lift
Good to see Ben back on the bike 👍
hi mate, what is your thought on the new Devel Sl1 Evo, lightweight bike of Devel compared to the a01 that you are using now..
Looks really nice. I haven’t ridden it, nor am I likely to ride it any time soon, given it is a disc only frame. But if the quality is as good as the A01, it’s bound to be good
@@ChrisMillerCycling
acutally, im torn between A01 and SL1 evo... can you give me some advice?
im just a casual rider.. prefer to ride in fast and long.. that's why I prefer the A01 (aero), but other says get the lightweight one (SL! Evo)..
what is the pros and cons of the bikes..
Chris, since upgrading the firmware a set of my assiomas have been reporting half power. Checked the firmware and says is fine. As I've not used them much I still have a few more checks to do before i contact favero.
A recent firmware update seems to have switched on a setting to double power rather than record my uno as a left side only meter... not sure if that's a factor for you... worth checking...
@@dominicbritt thanks!! I have duos but will check to see if it changed anything there.
Yeh that’s weird, let us know how you get on
Wind direction and air density, make you go slower on winter
If I was getting 2222 wats of power on my rides, I would just accept my greatness and post it to social media 🤣🤣🤣
things go wrong: brain turns to mush
better leave my shoe on my leg end while i try and resolve this pedal attatment
Mechanical easier to maintain, you having another shoe off moment. Electrical group set is far easier to look after. I agree cost more if you fall off but way better once you go electrical their is no way you would go back.
Hi Chris, I know you’re using Campy honestly I’ve always loved it but I don’t know why everyone seems to criticise Campy and they haven’t even used it before. I would like to know what your opinion is regarding Campy compared to other group-sets, or is that too controversial. Cheers.
Hey David, nah that’s not controversial...I’ve talked about it a bit in the past. I still feel the pure quality of the components, in terms of the actually build quality when it comes to Campagnolo is superior to what I have experienced elsewhere. Having never ridden EPS or Shimano Mechanical, I find it really hard to compare what I was riding 2 years ago (Dura Ace Di2) to the mechanical group set I am on now, that was sort of the point of the mechanical grouspet vlog we did last year.
The biggest issue with Campagnolo is quite simply stock, here in Australia it is really hard to get spare parts. So whilst the quality of the product is fantastic, the reality is you can’t walk into any bike shop and find spares. Great example is we had an issue with a WTO spoke after a crash at the Tour Of Tweed last year, we ordered a replacement spoke in November last year, we are still waiting for it. So while the WTO wheels are literally the best things I have ever ridden, there is a down side ... and that’s living on the other side of the world to where they are made. I hope this helps.
@@ChrisMillerCycling Hey Chris, really appreciate the time that you have taken to reply great information thanks again cheers.
What's going on with chain / front derailer at 8:30?
People will never believe there is something other than Shimano and SRam because they buy kamikaze snap-offs. Campagnolo Brevi - i.e. Patent... they are the best always were, always will be.
Are we sure it's not just a tailwind on the climb?
Don’t know ... I was sitting on 😂. Seriously thought, nah not that morning it was really still. Plus it’s a good one for not getting too wind affected as it kind of goes in a horse shoe shape.
What's your camera setup mate ?
On the bike or just vlogging at home? on bike its a combination of GPH8 and iPhone 12. Off bike it’s a Sony A7-C
@@ChrisMillerCycling thanks for sharing !!
Weather not looking great for L’etape!!
The descents will be sketchy AF!
Yep!!! Not keen on Berry mountain and Jamberoo pass after decent rain...
You guys are animals..you really move...cool video
WIND?
If you can afford it electronic is fantastic, no gear indexing ever too!
Yep ... the performance gains are just worth it
Hello Chris Rim brakes or disc brakes?
I love our WTO Rim brake wheels ... wouldn’t exchange them for anything.
My experience after riding Ultegra disc for last 18 mths (on a titanium gravel bike that I use 99% on road commuting, cafe rides etc) and comparing it to my normal road bike running Ultegra rim brake, I’m definitely going to try to stick with rim brakes for my next road bike but it’s becoming a niche purchase. So many makers have dropped rim brake or limited to certain price points. Disc is good when you want to switch wheel with different tyre sizes for off road etc and in mucky conditions but apart from that disc are more finicky, there’s going to be times after heavy braking that they will start to rub even if for a minute, they do need more maintenance, (bleeding etc) than rim brakes and frankly they are a big fragile after heavy use. 99% of the time they are fine until you start pushing them. My rim brakes feel great always. Always. You brake hard or soft and they don’t change how they feel or sound. Disc brakes aren’t like that. Rant over 😂
Oh and disc doesn’t have more stopping power. Just less effort on the lever. You’ve still got the same contact point on the road and you can slow a wheel just before the point of locking with a rim brake just the same as a disc brake. The only difference is that lever pressure
1st comment. I have some questions....
Will it rain at Heffro .... oh, seems we have that one answered 😂
