Best asparagus video I have seen! All others only speak to it “taking so long” never actually showing the size difference. Thank you for this! My asparagus is only 5 months old, so looks like yours around the same age, which makes me feel better
That sounds like an exciting journey ahead! Watching plants grow from seeds is always fascinating. Wishing you the best of luck with your asparagus seeds, and may you have a bountiful harvest! If you have any questions or need tips along the way, feel free to ask. Happy growing! 🌱😊
@@YouPlantTube Thank you 💜 that's very nice of you. I'm really looking forward to seeing how they grow and their process each step of the way. I subbed as well💜 happy growing 💜
Thank you for this! Great video! All others only use crowns for planting but I have a six pack of small seedlings and now I know what to do. Thank you!
This is great content! The amount of patience, taking literally years to make a video like this, is rare, and exceptionally useful to enthusiasts such as myself. Thank you so very much for this share
Grows wild near my place. I went out with a shovel one fall and grabbed 12 or 15 large ferns and transplanted them into the fence line behind my house. Chicken wired them off to keep critters out and a couple of years later plenty of spears for just me 15 years later plenty for a couple of families of 5.
Thank you! Every tutorial I sow on how to grow asparagus was in a the ground and I don't have a yard. Also everyone grow them from crowns. I don't have a yard and I have seeds so it seemed I don't have the conditions tho grow them. But here you are! Just like me and that gave me hope that I, too, can grow asparagus!
That's fantastic to hear! I'm glad the tutorial was helpful for you, and it's great to know that you can grow asparagus even without a yard. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any more questions along the way. Happy gardening! 🌱😊
I planted asparagus some years back and have enjoyed the harvest now about two years. I have learned mostly through trial and error. The one thing I am not certain of is that after I harvest some, I noticed they died out. I don't understand what I did wrong. I have been viewing every video on asparagus and yours is so detailed, thank you. I did notice how you cut off the asparagus. I just am lost as to why they die off after I harvested them. Any advice is surely welcomed. Thank you again for such a wonderful and detailed video.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad the video was helpful to you. It sounds like you've put a lot of effort into your asparagus bed. As for them dying off after harvesting, it could be related to over-harvesting or the health of the crowns. It's important to only harvest for a short period in the first couple of years to allow the plants to build up energy. Also, make sure to leave some spears to grow into ferns, as they help replenish the plant's energy for the next season. If you're already doing this, it might be worth checking the soil health and ensuring the plants are getting enough nutrients and water. I'm happy to help if you have any more questions-wishing you many more successful harvests! Happy gardening! 🌱😊
Wow, that's an impressive number! With proper care, they should make it through winter just fine. Mulching and protecting them from extreme cold can really help. Best of luck with your asparagus, and feel free to share your progress or ask any questions along the way. Happy gardening! 🌱
Hi. How big is your final container? I am thinking of starting asparagus from seeds in seed pods then to gallon container then finally to 5 gallon bucket.
Generally, asparagus plants require a deep and spacious container to accommodate their long roots and allow for proper growth. Starting with seed pods and gradually transitioning to larger containers is a great approach. For mature asparagus plants, a 5-gallon bucket should provide enough space for each plant to thrive. Just ensure the container has good drainage and is filled with well-draining soil. Best of luck with your asparagus growing journey, and feel free to reach out if you have any more questions! 🌱😊
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm thrilled to hear that you found the video helpful. If you have any questions or need further assistance with growing asparagus, feel free to ask. Your support means a lot to me! 😊🌱
I used cattle feed tubs from start to finnish. Then cut off bottom of tub and put whole tub in ground up to top. Worked well I never even took seeds out of bulb.

Thank you so much for your kind words and support! I'm glad you enjoyed the video on growing asparagus. If you have any questions or need further information, feel free to ask. Happy gardening! 😊🌱
asparagus doesn't care where its planted as long as it gets cool weather, good soil and food from time to time. I have a small asparagus farm in a bunch of used stock tanks (old feed / water troughs for animals) which counts as an above ground garden. I've been growing and eating asparagus from here for 10 years, I actually harvest and replant my own seed too. works great.
Absolutely! Growing asparagus at home not only saves money but also allows you to enjoy the freshness and satisfaction of harvesting your own produce. If you have any questions about growing your own veggies or need more tips, feel free to ask. Happy gardening! 🌱😊
Hi, I have also learnt from your video a lot about growing Asparagus, I have bought 2 crowns and some seeds and will try to grow them in my garden, or pots, not decided yet. Is there a PH level for the soil please? what kind of soil it likes? Thank you! Eva from Melbourne Australia
You should wait until the asparagus seeds turn red before harvesting them. The red color indicates that the seeds are fully mature and ready for planting. Green seeds are not yet ripe and may not germinate as well if used. Once the red berries are picked, you can remove the seeds by soaking them in water to separate the flesh from the seeds, then dry the seeds for future planting.
Thanks a lot for A very helpfull video, most interesting ,i be trying it soon , i do a lot if vegetables in pot, great hobby ,like i said asparagus next.
hmm well i should of done some research before i bought seeds. oh well im down, need to work on my patience anyway nowadays. So 2 years before anything will "bear" basically right. thanks for taking the time to compile the video
If you're patient and don't mind the wait then plant seeds, which also happens to be the cheaper option. The other option is to buy asparagus crowns preferably crowns which are at least 2 years of age so that in the third year you can start harvesting thick Spears. Thanks for the visit and your comment.
While I was growing them as seedlings and even in the paper cups and the larger pot I never gave them full sunlight all day, I only gave them full sunlight when I grew them in those water bottle containers, which asparagus plant didn't mind at all.
Great question! Actually, one asparagus plant can produce multiple spears throughout the season. It's a perennial crop, and with proper care, you can enjoy a continuous harvest. If you have any more questions or need tips, feel free to ask. Happy gardening! 🌱
Yes, typically you harvest asparagus spears one at a time as they reach the desired size. This allows the remaining spears to continue growing and ensures a prolonged harvest season. Enjoy your homegrown asparagus! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! 🌱😊
Indeed, growing asparagus does require some patience as it's typically a 2-year process to harvest. But trust me, the wait is worth it for those delicious spears! 😊 If it's from seed, then three years will give you more of those preferred thicker asparagus spears as the roots will be more developed. If you have any questions or need tips along the way, feel free to ask. Happy gardening!
Thank you for your comment! I appreciate your interest. I'm curious, could you please provide more details or clarify what you meant by 'seed chai asparagus k'? I want to make sure I understand your message correctly. Thank you!
No worries at all! The seeds can still grow in the pot, but removing them from the pods before planting provides better control and spacing. If the seeds are already in the pods, you can leave them be and see how they progress.so give it a shot. Just ensure they have good sunlight, proper watering, and soil conditions. It's all part of the gardening journey! Feel free to share updates, and if you have more questions, I'm here to help. Happy gardening! 🌱
Once you have an established asparagus seedling it would be preferable to transplant it directly into the ground, But not everybody has acres of land accessible to them, the video is ideally for those who have limited space or may not have available space to transfer them into the ground directly at the time where it's necessary because of other things growing at that time at that place. The video was made in my backyard and not in vegetable Farm!
Thank you for expressing your concern! While it's true that asparagus seeds contain a toxic compound called saponin, it's primarily found in the red berries of the asparagus plant, not the seeds themselves. There's no real concern as long as you don't ingest the red berries, basic precautions would be to wash your hands if you need to remove the seeds from the berries. However, it's always a good idea to handle them with care, and gloves can provide an extra layer of protection. Thank you for watching and I appreciate your reminder about safety precautions.
