I believe the key to beating Merab outside of a 1 shot KO, is to grapple him! He likes take downs but has shown to suck at actually holding people down and had little jiu-jitsu. If a good grappler could get him down and hold him it would largely nullify the pace, and from there submit him (he has been before) or wail on him with ground and pound.

Poirier is being discussed to fight Burns as the main event replacement at UFC 288 at 170 lbs. Poirier is 2 inches shorter than Max, so obviously he’s the bigger and stronger man. Poirier has fast hands as well, so it’s not like Max had an advantage there either. Aside from Volk I can’t see any FW that could have have been able to take those shots Max did in those fights with Poirier and not get KO’d.
Volk is the smartest guy at 145, the game planning is off the charts, along with his speed and strength...But, his intelligence is why he can beat Holloway..Although, he did lose to Islam, in a very close fight, despite the narratives..

volk is an absolute freak! IMO beat Islam. Volk should compete in both divisions as he's a great chance to beat everyone; cutting to 145 too often will be a negative for volk, who weighed in at 170 + for Islam fight when entering the octagon.
The way Volkanovski performed against someone probably 173 pounds in absolute peak condition is insane. He’s so little so you never expect it, but he’s so quick with angles I don’t even know how any fighter can handle that.
And he actually really exposed probably one of the biggest mortal flaws in what is otherwise a guy in Islam who has basically the tools to beat almost every single lw and that’s his chin. Don’t get me wrong, fighting max Holloway 3 times and ortega, two guys known for having ungodly chins can tend to make people think you have no power, so Alex gets flack for that, but still, that aside it’s not like he’s out here knocking guys stiff either…but you could see the way islam was hurt when volk touched his chin, and I think volk basically showed the blueprint for beating Islam. The problem ofc is that’s a lot easier said then done because islam has since getting stiffened by a guy nobody even knows fought super defensively sound and treats every strike like it’s the bubonic plague not to mention he has the wrestling to smother most guys before they can strike him, but Alex was good enough to find islams chin and expose that an actual lw with good speed and punching power for the lw Div can sleep islam if they can manage to either survive on the ground and not gas or get back up or stuff altogether and pierce islams defensive shell they can win. I do think if we throw volks name in there with the other guys like Benny and Poirier and gaethje and chandler volk is still the most likely in a rematch to actually win, but…minus volk I think beneil dariush could be the guy to dethrone Islam. That’s an issue khabib didn’t have, even if in terms of striking and other areas islam is better, but khabib had an iron chin even with a big massive cut
Islam also exposed volk for having a weak chin. Volk was hurt many times standing up. All against a deflated Islam who had a whole 12 less hours than normal to rehydrate while volk had to cut no weight. Long story short.. volk on his best day couldn't beat Islam on his worst day😂😂😂
