UNMATCHED POWER! EGO Select Cut XP 21" Self-Propelled Mower Review [10Ah 56V]

  • This EGO Select Cut XP 21-inch mower has really shaken it all up. We get asked all the time by people: "should I buy a battery-powered mower, and which one should I buy?" Our answer has always started with: "If you maintain your yard every week during Spring and Summer, then you can probably do fine with a battery-powered mower." And then EGO goes and builds this punisher. No kidding, we pushed and drove this EGO Select Cut XP through stuff that a gas mower would have nightmares about.
They took the EGO Select Cut and put a bigger and badder brushless motor in it, added a 10Ah 56V battery, and now we have this new EGO Select Cut XP 21-inch self-propelled lawnmower (model LM2150SP and LM2156SP). You really can't understand the power this thing puts out until you get behind the wheel....handle. Not to mention, this thing has a slew of other standout features as well.

Ego is definitely king of the hill right now. They got in the game early and their experience and development shows through and through. That trek through the "jungle" was really impressive. Pricey no doubt. But not the most expensive thing out there. I love my Atlas (Greenworks) 80v...but it didn't cost as much as this setup. Impressive.

I want one of these so bad. Mainly because I have an annoying neighbor I try to avoid 100% of the time. I despise mowing season, not because of the work but bc he comes out and wants to talk any time he hears my mower crank. I'd probably mow at night if I had one of these.

I just moved in and my new home seems like paradise compared to my Philly apartment in da ‘hood. I meet my neighbors and the grumpy old man ( 14 years younger than I) starts spewing out his rules for the neighborhood ? I say “ Ok, see you later” and avoid him. I’m so happy Sat. morning tossing a frisbee with my pup in my big beautiful lush green yard. My pup Akers me as there is a commotion on my front lawn and it’s this neighbor tearing up my front lawn on his lawn tractor ? Everyone tells me to just forget it he was just trying to help. I feel like Russel Crow in the movie “ Unhinged” I’m so pissed off that someone vandalized my front yard.

I’m new at all of this and I just come from settlement with a few things and this JO neighbor starts spouting out orders about how long my grass should be (? He did not approve of the former owners grass looking great but too long for his liking after he cut it 2-3 times per week at the 4” height) He also wanted me to rip out some trees and I responded “ I just bought this house 40 minutes ago, I’ll look into it” He drove up on my lawn and cut it and way too low and he could’ve run over my dog as he was driving carelessly. You don’t know how I wanna introduce him to my new mower.

Good video! Glad you remembered to pull the batt before changing the blade. Other reviewers said they pull the batt and then push the start button and blade bar to discharge any remaining charge in the motor. Pretty impressive going through the tall thick stuff!

I just purchased this model two days ago. I want to thank you for an excellent presentation of each of the components. I purchased it from Ace hardware, and the guys did a terrific job of assembling it, and they spent a considerable time with me making sure I understood how to manage the mower. However, I just want you to know that I Saved your video in my settings so that I can refer to it once I start using it. Yes, I subscribed. Thanks again for the detail demonstrations. 👍🏾

Kudos to your assistant. I wish my 11 year old daughter was as enthusiastic about helping out.
I have the first gen EGO SP mower and after many years of use on our half acre, it still runs flawlessly.
I've never actually removed the blade because I just sharpen with my cordless angle grinder and then oil it with some WD-40 in-place at the end of each mowing season before winter storage.
Thanks again for the great review. When (if) my Ego mower ever dies, I'll probably get this new one, but I'd love it if EGO released a 30-36" wide, twin blade, SP mower, as I'd like more coverage but don't quite have the lawn space or budget for their Z6 riding mower.

I like that the lid really clamps down on the bag to help keep it in place. I always hated bagging grass with my old Craftsman Eager-1 mower becuase the bag would bounce off routinely and slam into my shins.

Had my heart set on the Milwaukee because I already have so many of their batteries and love their tools, including landscaping tools. Alas, their pricing was out of control. This video helped me make up my mind and go with the EGO 2150sp. It's being delivered today so we will see what happens. Love how it powered thru the jungle and packs away nicely for blade changes and storage. Let's hope it makes 5 years without a hitch.

Glad I found this video review. My daughter and husband have a postage stamp for a front yard. The back of the house is on a cliff so no back yard. They have this heavy old Craftsman self propelled that is just an awful mower to maneuver around all their landscaping. This mower would be perfect for them and surely looks capable. Given the size of their yard (less than 1/4 acre) this EGO should last them forever. Great review! And thank you EGO owners for your comments.

Just bought mine yesterday haven’t unboxed it yet but I’m returning it for the big daddy 10 amp and it’s on sale 20% off till 4 th of July. I’m excited to use it. I had bought two lawn mowers with the Briggs and Stratton engines on them and both crapped out within 1 year each. After several years dealing with these lawnmowers decided to pull the trigger on one of these. Your video has reassured me. Thanks for the video

The self-propelled, adjustable handles, massive battery and additional mower blade for finer mulching is a tough one to beat for a battery powered lawnmower. The battery seize and amperage is huge which can make an enormous difference for workload. The way that the Ego lawnmower ran through those thick, tall grass is very impressive. 😎👌👍💯.

This is the most thorough review of the ego mower I have seen. This is the first one I have seen using the side discharge. (or is that an in your face discharge?) This the first one I've seen cutting actual grass and weeds rather than a manicured 3-in lawn. The first one that shows the actual amount of yard it can cut rather than the advertised figure in minutes. The first one that says you can push it without resistance from the self-propelled system. I've been using an ego Grass trimmer for the past 5 years. Because of it I will never go back to gas on any yard tools. About 2 years ago I bought the chainsaw. Last week my gas lawn mower started to spit sputter and fall dead. I was highly disappointed that it was only a clogged air filter. Oh yeah, the only thing missing is you could have shown how long it took to fully recharge the battery.

Here in Belgium the Ego 2135 costs 1000 euro (about 1100 dollars) and with 7,5 AH. So your 750 dollars + tax is cheaper.

Thanks for this review. I was just left high and dry by some landscaping fraudsters, only have an old EGO push mower, and now have hills and more yard. So, got one of these yesterday, charged the battery and just used it for the first time. Yeah. Definitely a good purchase. It easily moved right up the rather steep incline cutting all the way. I was really worried it might be too steep for it. Might take a few times to really get used to adjusting speed, blades on or off as I move along, since the space is so uneven and quirky. Thanks!

I was so close to biting the bullet on this mower but I got the Toro 60 volt Recycler instead and love it! It’s a bit heavier than the other plastic battery mowers out there because of the metal deck but it’s kinda what makes it feel like a real traditional mower. Bonus points for being made in the USA! Maybe you can do a review on it eventually. Anyway, great review as always Tim.

I have the $600 Ego mower and while the cut on fine grass isn't quite as good as a high quality gas mower (which I'm not really concerned about anyway), it is the most powerful push mower I've used for tall/rough grass. Add to that the lack of fumes/pollution, less noise, ability to use the self-propelled function without having the blade on, and not having to pull start and you have a real winner.

It is a great mower, got one in May, this model I belive but with a 7.5ah battery. I was so impressed with it that I got a leaf blower, 18" chainsaw and the multi tool/power head (carbon fiber) with the 21" hedge clipper. Definitely going to grab a few more of their tools, weed whacker attachment for sure.
    Great product!!!
I do still have my gas mower, I'll never give that up. It comes out when I miss a week and the grass (aka weeds) has overgrown.

Pretty great mower, just used mine for the 1st yesterday. 1 thing I don't like is the side discharge attachment, seems kind of clunky when trying to install. I used mulching, my grass was a few days past needing cut, the mower just cut right through it. My gas mower would have bogged down and potentially shut off in some spots. Over all, very impressed.

No "High lift" blade. But, it was normally $699. Got it on sale for $599. Quiet and fast. I cannot walk as fast as it goes for very long. ;) Thanks for your assesement. It was spot on.

Thanks for the review. Have recently transitioned all of my lawn power equipment (ie trimmer, edger, blower) to Ego (love that the same battery can operate everything) except for the mower. But even though I have a fairly new Honda, I'm probably going to do that as well as soon as my new credit card with the $200 bonus for a $500-or-more purchase comes in the mail. Question for you though - my typical mowing method is to first mulch, then go over the clumped areas with the bag to make the lawn look neat. Have you tried bagging with the mulching blade on? I don't want to have to change blades to pick up the clumps, so am hoping there is enough vacuum power with the mulching blade on to do it.

I also use the impact wrench to remove blades on a mower, (the other option is using a ratchet and a piece of wood to prevent the blades from turning when unscrewing the bolt). But the problem, (as well as it's greatest benefit), with an impact wrench, is the fact that it has a lot of torque and you can easily over tighten the bolt. That could result in a broken bolt or even with a bent blade. That's why I screw the blade on with a cordless drill and tighten it with a torque wrench.
By the way I would like to see the mower tackle thick, tall wet grass in the spring. This was a scorched earth tall grass.. LOL

  • @Margalus

May be a strong mower, but an extra battery is over $500, and not a single place has them in stock. I really want an electric mower, but the more I research, the less I want one. Up until the summer heat hits us in July my grass literally grows about 6" a week and stays damp. Electric mowers don't seem to last long under those conditions. I found one review that showed grass like mine gets in 7 days and this mower blew all of the others out of the competition. But it still only went 60 feet before dying... I completely misunderstood the review that went 60ft. This thing even beat all the gas mowers in that regard except for a Honda. I didn't watch the gas part, so jumped to the wrong conclusion.

    Awesome video as per usual.
This thing is a beast, no doubt about it.
However, the reasons that swayed me to buy the Milwaukee mower (albeit like 130 bucks more expensive) is the battery eco system.
I can use the two 12.0 High Output batteries it uses on all of my other M18 power tools. I've actually found myself finishing mowing my lawn with 2 bars left on each of the batteries so instead of using my other M18 batteries I have charged and ready to go, I just use one of the 12.0s in the mower for my trimmer and the other for the blower to finish the job, neither of which run the batteries empty by the time I'm done either.
It has a bit more torque, a steel deck and uses one blade with no need to swap a secondary blade which is a simple enough process but sometimes you just do feel like fiddling around with swapping blades.
Subjective opinion is in the looks department, the EGO looks a bit too....for lack of better terms, plasticky and cheap in my opinion, like a toy of sorts. The colors they use for them don't really do them any justice either, perhaps a darker gray and green would help quite a bit.

Bought an EGO LM2156SP, self-propelled XP Select Cut mower and returned it 2 mows later.
The self-propel function is quirky and inconsistent. The lag from when you pull the bar is long, the jerkiness and sudden surges suck (you get wheelies) and the max speed is way too low. It sometimes jerked forward when I was pulling it backwards. I also find the green button/bars to start it moving are too small and too recessed.
The battery life was also disappointing. I ordered the tool only and my existing 5 amp battery only got the mower through 25 minutes of mowing. I know it comes with a 7.5 amp battery, but this 5 amp battery powered my old EGO (not self-propelled) for 50 minutes. Not apples to apples, I know, but unacceptable.
    Bought a Honda HRX.
I do love the EGO blowers, hedge clippers and snow blowers, though.

I have the older select cut and I am truly impressed so far....the 10ah battery only improved a already decent mower.... TBH , the 7.5ah it came with is completely adequate for most yards up to 1/4 acre or so....BUT..
I won't say exactly what I did because I don't want to be responsible for someone hurting themselves..... however I will say that I played around with the blades and with a little work...u will have to make a spacer....and some evaluation....I am now using only one blade and outperforming what the mower came with.....better run time....fills the bag no problem and with the addition of just a little bit of heavy metal on each end of the blade it has created a heavy flywheel effect.
NOTE:. If u get curious and try something like this PLEASE be sure you know how to work with metal and the blade will need to be balanced when you are done.....IF THE HEAVY METAL IS NOT INSTALLED CORRECTLY TO THE BLADE IT CAN FLY OFF AND CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY.

    • @Shoptoolreviews

Yes, you are correct. The 7.5Ah battery is probably more than sufficient for the "typical" American home/yard. Keep in mind, the new Select Cut XP not only got a bigger battery (10Ah), but they also upgraded the brushless motor...even more power.
We understand your craftiness. We "may" have experimented with different weights and blades ourselves...but no one can prove this. ;) Yes, you are correct, it is not recommended to be changing the balance, weight, and engineering of any blades. Bad things can happen. Thanks for watching.

    • @floobertuber
      @floobertuber 2 года назад

The 2-year extended warranty (giving the battery 5 years total) only applies to the 10.0 Ah battery, and possibly (I'm not sure about this part) only when it's sold with the LM2156SP Select Cut XP mower. Otherwise, their batteries only get a standard 3 years warranty. Plus, you MUST register the battery within 60 days, or you don't get the 2-year extension.
I was rather confused by all of this myself, but eventually got to the bottom of the warranty-length discrepancy by checking a lot of sellers' websites, as well as EGO's.
