- Over time iPads have gone from being purely entertainment/media machines to being a fully complete experience to handle all your computing needs. Accessories like keyboards have become a great way to get even more out of the iPad experience!
So today I’ll be looking at two very different types of keyboards for the 9th generation iPad. The first one is the official Apple option, the Apple Smart Keyboard. It costs $159 and has been around for a while. The second option is the Logitech Combo Touch Keyboard, that incorporates the smart connector technology and providing a trackpad, all while also retaining the same price as the Apple Smart Keyboard.
So the question is does the Apple Smart Keyboard actually have something more to offer than it seems like on paper, or is the Logitech Combo Touch Keyboard a clearly better deal?

I have the Logitech Combo Touch and for me it’s perfect. I own the 8th generation iPad and was looking for a way to have my iPad substitute for a laptop. The Combo fills that niche nicely. I’m an older user who finally learned to use iPad OS. I don’t normally carry my system outside the house, so it’s weight isn’t an issue. I purchased my unit directly from Logitech with a discount so it was a real no brainer. Typing on the Combo is great, viewing angles are great and I use it on a desk so space usage is great. The Combo Touch has been the prefect addition for me.
My experience very much so mirrors yours! I am very happy with it and it was definitely the perfect addition for me as well!

I ordered the yellow one thinking it was going to be a bright vibrant color. Instead I looks like more of a Gold color. I personally prefer the gold look. Definitely not disappointed but just a heads up to the ones expecting a brighter cream of yellow.
I love everything Apple. I truly do. I bought the apple smart keyboard a few years ago and was excited to have a keyboard for my ipad. It was just ok. The bottom never really stayed flush and it was very weird to fold it up. You also had to get some sort of cover for the back of your ipad because the apple smart keyboard doesn't provide that. I just bought the logitech combo touch keyboard and it is head and shoulders above the Apple keyboard, it is not even on the same planet. I will say the one drawback is, is that it makes the iPad much heavier. The logitech keyboard does feel and look very similar to the ms surface. I highly recommend this keyboard combo.
Logitech combo is a Best Buy! It has dramatically improved my IPad 9 user experience, definitely a game changer! I have been using Logitech prods ever since, but this keyboard goes beyond any expectation!

I just got my combo keyboard for chirstmas. Couldnt be more happier. I might start using this more than my latop as i love the feel and design of it
I really wish the logitech keyboards didn't have that giant chunky protective guard around the whole thing. I like a lot about it, but I just wish they would come out with a version that was similar to the keyboard case that comes with the Chromebook Duet.
Great video, I like both options, they have advantages And disadvantages …. Logitech is too thick and heavy but I love the trackpad. I got the Apple Smart Keyboard and use it with a mouse

For the iPad 10.2” Gen 7, 8, and 9, if you want to take advantage of the Keyboard and Trackpad functionality and are planning to get and use an Apple Pencil 1 or Logitech Crayon with it, the Logitech Combo Touch is probably the only case you should consider, even with the $150 premium. I got one for my mom’s iPad Gen 7 back in 2019, and it has been holding fast to this day in 2023.
if u fold back the apple smart keyboard, is the keyboard still active if u accidentally click it?
I use the Smart Keyboard currently and it’s fine and I aaallmost think it’s more versatile because you can flip the stand around and use it to prop up the iPad in a couple different viewing angles. That said, I’m very comfortable with shortcuts but i miss having a trackpad like on my laptop and am looking for something like the combo touch so this was helpful
How do you charge the pencil in this case?

I have actually owned both at one time or another. To me, each has their advantages and disadvantages. Which you mentioned in the video. I've even had both models for the Air/Pro. I definitely liked the Smart Folio for the Air/Pro much better than the 7/8/9 gen model. Mainly cause it protected the back of the iPad during transport. So I found myself using it more cause I liked have the option of a keyboard being with my in the rare case I would need one. But if I was wanting to get some "serious" typing done, I most definitely used the Combo Touch cause the experience is much better and more laptop like with the addition of the trackpad.

I bougth the two of this, i prefer the smart keyboard, the thing, logitech was to heavy. In the house i just use a Spigen case, to consume content, but out side in work i changed for the smart keyboard. The portability on the iPad whit smart keyboard its so superior. A cool tip, in Amazon is refurbished the smart keyboard is 60 bucks and its just like new!. I have a laptop, a gamer laptop so protability is important for me.

I have both and the only downside to the Logitech is the case part. The keyboard is great but the other half is super bulky.
The trackpad and row of function keys with the Logitech pretty much make this one a no-brainer for me. It just about functions like a MacBook . The only issue is you need to use it on a hard surface else there is no way to support the kickstand. So you can use it AS a laptop, but you can't use it ON your laptop.
The Apple case is shorter by sacrificing the touch pad and the row function keys. I’m not willing to make that sacrifice. I’ve had my Logitech for a week and I’m in love.
I have an ipad 9 and found a really cheap used version of the Logitech Combo Touch to buy, but it’s from 2 years ago and it only specifies compatibility withthe 7th and 8th generation ipad. But i’m thinking that’s because the 9th wasn’t out yet, because i noticed on their website that now they say it’s compatible with all 3 generations. So what do you guys think, would it work for my 9th gen ipad?

I have the logitech combo but there is something that bothers me : as the keyboard is detachable, I can’t easily use my ipad on my legs, need a table. I would have prefered an attached keyboard. I think it is better than the apple one though. For my Ipad 9, I would love a keyboard similar to the magic keyboard for the Ipad Air, which is much better and in addition offers a charging port too.

The apple smart keyboard was not the gaming experience i hoped for. Based on the comments and reviews for the combo touch, the choice is obvious. I don’t even need a new iPad thanks to the combo touch!

iPad 9 is the exact same size and dimensions as iPad 7 and 8, so anything with 7 or 8 on it with work with the 9 too

The Artek keyboard case is great and costs $50. Bluetooth is fine. Makes a lot more sense on a bottom end iPad! A hugely expensive Apple keyboard without a trackpad? No thank you!

The Apple keyboard also keeps debris from getting into the keys.

A1. Yes this will work with the 9th generation iPad. That is what I'm using in this video.
A2. If you're using a wired mouse, you'll need to buy a lighting to USB-A adapter and connect the mouse to your lightning port. If you use a bluetooth mouse (which is what I'd HIGHLY recommend if you wanted to use a mouse) all you have to do is put your mouse in pairing mode and go to your bluetooth settings on the iPad and pair it from there. It's the same process as pairing any other bluetooth device. Once connected it'll work without needing any further setup.
A3. There is, but quite frankly NONE of them live up to the Apple Pencil. Even though it is expensive, it's one of those products that actually does separate itself from the rest of the alternatives. If you're looking to draw and design with a Pencil. I'd highly recommend sticking to the Apple Pencil. If you're okay with giving up pressure sensitivity the best alternative would be the Logitech Crayon: amzn.to/3QNMop0

That's what Apple want, they want to sell you an expensive and flimsy "smart keyboard" that doesn't protect the back side so the resell/trade-in value will decrease because of dings and scratches, making you spend even more money.
Saw it in apple store, all ipads of geniuses were scratched that made me not even consider the dark grey color, plus the geniuses in apple store have no clue about products. Guy in other non apple store knew a lot more about it. And those geniuses were in flagship London shop....
