Lamb fat in "lepinja" is from "pecenje", and that makes it so tasty. Also, yogurt is always drunk separately to wash away the taste of strong food so that one could eat even more :)
In Serbia, the difference between burek and pita is in the method of preparation and how the dough crusts are arranged, and not in the ingredients of the filling with which it is filled. When I watched your Romanian series I knew you would like our food too (or even more😉), but you are on the spot with explanation that it's quality of the foods it self... You can verify it by simply buying a tomato in farmer's market and comparing it to what you get in Canada... (I have seen this in france with veggies in their markets) it's not the same... What you need is a local foodie to guide you to the best places for foods: best burek, best pljeskavica, best sandwich etc.
How not to love the creators of pljeskavica? ❤ when I was in Serbia a month ago, I ate every day. 😊 Sincerly, as a romanian I feel at home in Serbia. Lovely people, lovely places.❤
In Serbia, we don't eat mustard with roast pork We eat horseradish (a European cousin of wasabi .. it is white in colour and we all prepare it pickled for the winter). You should try it this way. 😉
Some of the dishes are not considered street food like "pečenje" (it is served in restaurants, kafanas, at Slava, weddings and other types of celebrations; the only exceptions may be grill festivals) and "uštipci" (you can usually find them in restaurants as a dish usually eaten for breakfast, sometimes for dinner and often made at home), other dishes can be street food, mostly in bakeries, but you can find them in restaurants as well. Pljeskavica is a grilled dish consisting of a spiced meat patty mixture of pork, beef and lamb. It can be served with onions, milk cream, ajvar, urnebes (spicy cheese salad), as well as with many other spices and vegetables, it can be served either on plate with side dishes, or with lepinja (flatbread). There are many different types of "pljeskavica" and in different sizes like Leskovačka pljeskavica (usually very spicy); Gurmanska pljeskavica; Šarska pljeskavica (with kačkavalj cheese); Hajdučka pljeskavica; Vranjska pljeskavica; Punjena pljeskavica; ect. Burek is a family of pastries or pies, in Serbia there are three traditional types with meat, cheese and empty, but today there are more types of filling. We have many types of pies, but what distinguishes burek is the way it is made and the lard. This at 11:41 min is considered a traditional Serbian burek and originates from Niš. At 13:29 min both top and under pie in my part of Serbia is called "pita savijača / uvijača", and that pie at the bottom is "burek". By the way burek have origins and is descendant of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) dish en tyritas plakountas "cheesy placenta", itself a descendant of placenta, the classical baked layered dough and cheese dish of Ancient Roman and Persian cuisine. Name came from Persian burak, the diminutive form of būra or buġra, meaning "stew", and refers to any dish made with yufka (filo). The Persian word bureh goes back to the Middle Persian *bōrak. This word ultimately goes back to the Proto-Indo-European root *bher- which meant "to carve, cut, split".

How do you guys get info on this stuff?? The poor guy who said his favorite Serbian food is pizza is basically how I would have handled that quesiton, I'd just freeze and say something that's not Serbian at all. 😂Here's some more info if you need it at any point. If you get to eat pljeskavica again, other than punjena you could have gurmanska, it's basically a spicy one. Other street food you could try is karađorđeva, although I feel like I've seen you eat it before, and when it comes to palačinke we have savoury ones that can be amazing depending on where you eat it! If you ever have a Milky restaurant around, definitely go there, they serve amazing gigantic pancakes (palačinke), both sweet and savoury! As for proper authentic restaurant meals - pasulj, sarma, teletina ispod sača are amazing! Sarma is what we eat for christmas and new year's eve, pasulj is just beans, we eat it at least like once a week and one batch usually lasts three days and the legend says that the older it is - the better. Teletina ispod sača means veal under sach, it is the tastiest juiciest meat you will ever eat, prepared in a very specific primitive type oven (sač)! And if you like really spicy stuff, try srpska salad with your meal but make sure to ask the waiter how spicy it is. If they say it's very spicy, then it will actually make you cry - been there!
Good show guys, only I have to correct you on burek... In Serbia as in Turkey, where burek is originally from, you have many types of it... Burek meat, burek cheese, burek spinach, burek with mushrooms ... And it could be in form of pita or rolled. Only Serbian secret ingredient is to use pork fat instead of cooking oil. Bosnians will claim that burek is with meat only... rest they call pita. Why, you have to ask them. They are a bit odd on the subject. Cheers!
I’m visiting Serbia for the first time in September. The Komplet Lepinje made it to the top of my MUST TRY foods. Watching this dude’s joy while eating it is priceless 😊 🇷🇸
Some of this street food mentioned in this video is regional, and some you can find everywhere but it is the best in certain regions. For example, index sandwich originated in Novi Sad and usually the best ones can be found there. Komplet lepinja or "lepinja sa sve" ("lepinja with everything") originated in Užice and the best ones are over there and on nearby Zlatibor mountain. The best barbecue is in Leskovac (you confirmed that AFAIK), best burek is usually in Niš, best pečenje around motorway between Kruševac and Čačak, etc. BTW, if you go back to Novi Sad definitely try "gomboce" (plum dumplings, but there are many other varieties, that is the "original" one) and if you go back to Subotica then try "juneći perkelt" (veal goulash served on pasta with cottage cheese and fried bacon, it's Hungarian traditional dish), I can give you the name of the restaurant where there is one of the best ones :-) And there's one more local food in the northern parts, i.e. Vojvodina, that "westerners" usually find strange, it's "rezanci s makom" (pasta with poppy seed). And if you are around Bački Petrovac, definitely try "kulen" (smoked pork sausage), it is made by Slovak national minority living in this region for almost 3 centuries, you can find it only there (there are similar ones elsewhere, but this one is special) ;-) And speaking of sausages, there's also "peglana kobasica" ("ironed sausage", when you see one, you will know immediately why it's called like that) in Pirot, original ones are made of "3J" (jagnjetina, jaretina, junetina = lamb, goat, veal).
Sad si, definitivno, postao Srbin! You are one of us now bruv, anyone who enjoys our food the way you guys do, has enough grease in his veins to easily go and treat himself with a 6 pack! That's what we do, before and after having a komplet lepinja.😂
4:44 Hey bro, I know what you mean! Instead of mustard we use horseradish in vinegar and salad is fresh cabbage with salt, vinegar and oil ! try ! NO Mustard, or mayo, ketchup....
For some of the best food, including burek and grilled meat, go to Niš. It’s just the next level up from rest of the Serbia. Ever since I tried burek in Kalinka, Nis, no other can even compare. Especially pizza burek.
"Leave me half, OK?" M-m! @1:03 LUL That pleskavita looks like the ones I have had in Timișoara as a student, rather than the deconstructed plate one. Looked quite good.
We eat komplet lepinja top first - you take the top and dip it in the other part with kajmak and pretop and eat it then ❤️ When you finish the top you then take the other part and rip the parts of it and dip them in the rest too, you don’t eat it like pljeskavica at all, it isn’t supposted to be in your hands like you are eating sandwich, pizza or something simmular 😄

In Sabac they even turned that McDonald's building into a bank.
@@BeyfighterFaris That was probably in sabac too. At least those people who could afford it and Wanted to eat there. Some even brought their own food just for the sake of being able to eat in a Refrigerated space.. Many did it secretly and were not caught. But those who were caught were kindly summoned to leave with their food.
@@mariangrimsdell1112 Until 10 years ago I went to McDonald's quite often. But since McDonald's has become much more expensive in comparison and the portions much smaller.. And last but certainly not least. They have become less tasty. Really good Fresh made pljeskavice, no McDonald's can compete with that.
@@zokilauda yes I eat at McDonalds when travelling because it’s on the Highway and easy access, but the food has no nutritional value, Those beautiful cheese and yoghurt in Serbia much better for your health, McDonalds is fake food and very bad for cholesterol. Sadly it’s taking off in SEAsia and other countries. They will regret losing their traditional food when they become obese like in the Western world.
I'm literally eating Pizza Pizza while watching this and I have no idea how you can compare the pizza in Serbia to this. Not to knock Pizza Pizza, but whenever I visit family in Serbia I make a point of eating as much pizza as I can because their recipe is unreal. Interestingly most of the pizza places in Serbia (at least of the street food variety) I have been to have a near identical recipe.
Steve, don't worry about your waistline. It's better to regret gaining weight cause you can lose it anyway, rather than regret not eating something rare to come by when you've had the chance to. Just enjoy. Eat!
The only reason komplet lepinja wasn't 9 stars is because you didn't eat it in Užice. The original name is Užička komplet lepinja(lepinja set from Užice), and there is a particular way you are meant to eat it.
The main difference between pita and burek is that burek is made with animal fat and pita is made with oil. Today you have bureks with cheese, mushrooms, spinach etc, but traditionally burek is made with meat. There are no differences between the doughs used for pitas. That is phyllo pastry and you can find it in supermarkets (I think in Canada in some places, too). It is possible to make it home, but today few people do it that way. Eating pita crumbs is totally ok. You should know that drinking yoghurt with basically anything from bakery is a must. Your host is not from Užice, obviously, cause she would show you the way to eat komplet lepinja. Užice with its surroundings is the place where you'll find the best komplet lepinja in the country. Yoghurt on top of it was quite heavy to watch. :D Great video, as usual, props!
Wrong, traditionally, borek is made with many ingredients, like meat, cheese, spinach, potatoes, not only meat. You cant say exactly where it originates, but its not Balkans for sure, its either Turkey, Iraq or India. They all have similar dishes and its hard to pinpoint the place of origin.
The story about burek that it is burek only with meat and the rest is to pita, that only applies in Bosnia,in Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia, burek can be made with different ingredients...It is specific Bosnian thing
Exactly, that applies only to Bosnia, in Serbia there are three traditional types: burek sa mesom, burek sa sirom i prazan burek but now there are other fillings as well. There are differences in burek, for example in my part of Serbia burek is considered to be the one that comes from Niš, and what is considered burek in Bosnia is called "pita savijača/uvijča". Of course, we have different types of pies, but they differ from burek in the way they are made, and burek is usually fattier. We also have: gibanica, pita sa jabukama, pita sa orasima, zeljanica, krompiruša, sirnica, pita sa sirom, pita sa bundevom / dulekom, pita sa pečurkama, pita sa kupusom ect. but they are not the same as burek ie. they are made and bent differently.
@@dj_m19 Everyone knows it comes from Turkey, that doesn't make it any less of a national food in Bosnia or Serbia. I actually ate burek in Turkey, it's similar but very different, we go much crazier on the grease and put more filling, and the traditional oval shape of our burek was in none of the bakeries there for some reason, they were all pita shaped. Anyway. As far as what the original comment was saying. It is true that Serbs make burek with everything (you can even buy a pizza burek in some places, I know, crime against humanity), while if you go to Sarajevo you'll find burek and pita to always be a separate thing. That's really all that was said, and it's true. Serbs don't care as much as Bosnians about this difference, although we are also aware of it.
@@Randomly1234 of course it doesn't make it any less of a national food in Bosnia or Serbia, my point was that Bosnians foolishly assert their tradition and their way of making as gospel AS IF they invented burek and have the right to do so. I've never seen a Serb or a Croat, or a Slovene or whatever argue with Bosnians and tell them that burek isn't only with meat, it's always the other way round and Bosnians starting the unnecessary conflict over such a trivial topic.
I think now that it would be fair from your side to put a warning before the video about what will happen in it. Especially for people who wrongly started watching this hungry with nothing similar to purchase nearby.

Especially the traditional street food.
In Sabac they even turned that McDonald's building into a bank.
In Malaysia, people chose to eat in Mcd mostly because it's air-conditioned due to the hot and humid weather only. Lol
@@BeyfighterFaris
That was probably in sabac too.
At least those people who could afford it and Wanted to eat there.
Some even brought their own food just for the sake of being able to eat in a Refrigerated space..
Many did it secretly and were not caught.
But those who were caught were kindly summoned to leave with their food.
👏👏👏 so happy that Serbians keep their traditions, McDonalds food is trash , I am hoping to visit Belgrade in 2025 💕

Until 10 years ago I went to McDonald's quite often.
But since McDonald's has become much more expensive in comparison and the portions much smaller..
And last but certainly not least.
They have become less tasty.
Really good Fresh made pljeskavice,
no McDonald's can compete with that.
All food looks delicious!! Keep safe, healthy and happy.
Whereabouts in Serbia is this? The food looks amazing!
You guys should try cvarke (chvarke) especially warm ones :D Try palacinke in Milky (you can find them in all major cities)
Niš is the best for Burek and Pljeskavice and Ćevapi.
#JetFam Any plans for more Members-only videos?
Guys please try Pljeskavica u Maramici, that will blow your mind.
That is 8 star food! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Edit: Its hard to find
Thank you, Stefan! 😊
It’s so funny that her name is Ivana even tho she is Asian :) Ivana is very common Serbian name tho :)
17:05 it's a must! just wash it down with last sip of jogurt and enjoy rest of the day as a local ^^
Пријатно.
That video made me hungry , Serbian food seens interesting . Big kisses 😘 PS : Check on YT the video - Canada : The haida fight for their traditions .
Yogurt you eat in between bites, to freshen the palate.❤
I really shouldn't watch this while i'm hungry... It looks so good and i didn't have a komplet lepinja in years.
I m hungryyyyyyyy now :) very "tasty" video. ❤
dobro zvuci , mmm.
The original name is Užička komplet lepinja(lepinja set from Užice), and there is a particular way you are meant to eat it.
you should try leskovacki ustipci they are meat with cheese inside and some are a little spicy one of my favorite foods in the world
Danke über deine Meinung in Serbien
Great video, as usual, props!
At Serbia you havé top many choice of hamburger ,it’s everywhere look it , pleskavica is something else
You should order "Plasma Shake" in Safari...AMAZING!
За добру свињу нема лоших помија😂😂😂
The story about burek that it is burek only with meat and the rest is to pita, that only applies in Bosnia,in Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia, burek can be made with different ingredients...It is specific Bosnian thing
Even in Turkey you can order Burek with cheese, spinach, meat....
not to mention Turkey where we all got it from to begin with, but Bosnians would rather be obnoxious snowflakes about it
Exactly, that applies only to Bosnia, in Serbia there are three traditional types: burek sa mesom, burek sa sirom i prazan burek but now there are other fillings as well.
Please, if you have a chance, try the sandwiches in Belgrade "BABALU"..I can confidently claim that they are the best
Which country would you say has the best food? 💥
I think now that it would be fair from your side to put a warning before the video about what will happen in it. Especially for people who wrongly started watching this hungry with nothing similar to purchase nearby.
You must gave yoghurt with burek.... must have
❤😊
welocome in Serbia, and BON APETIT... so much food and still not fat!! lol!!! that is when food is organic and quality
food being organic or not has nothing to do with its caloric content lol.
You can definitely get morbidly obese on the most organic food imaginable.
Maybe we are missing a lot of things in Serbia, but food... Can't complain about that.
Imagine going to McDonalds after tasting all those pljeskavicas! 🙅♂
If you want best lamb pečenje, go to MB Mladenovac, 50km south of belgrade. Just order lamb. If you say its not the best meat you ever tried, I pay the bill, in October, when I come to Serbia. Try many other good food in Mladenovac while you are there.
Looks like a proper diet food all around ;)
Srpski specijalitet ,pivo ispod crte !!!!😎😱🙈
07:22 "Comming to Serbia and eating a burger, is a bit like going to Italy and getting Sushi".
This should be remembered, engraved in stone, maybe written on a T-shirt...?
AJVAR?!!! Pečene Paprike?!!!
You people will gain weight in Serbia🇷🇸 on every corner some offer in the form of food!!! We Serbs have always respected a good bite!!! This bread is called "Somun"!!!
Hahaha bon Appetit 😂😂😂😂
it is necessary lamb roast fat and juices, but pork roast as well, or even better. It is called: pretop. You read it as it is written. And generally, in Serbian you read as it is written. We have phonetic alphabet, the best in the world.
after all the praise, according to you, the rating of Serbian food is???
Big Pizza is one of the worst pizza places in Serbia
