- Hey guys if you are like me you like to mod your BMW, but you also likely live in an area where emissions testing comes up every few years. This is a video of how I fixed all the parts I needed to and in order to get the car "READY" for emissions there is a drive cycle that must be completed to test all the sensors. Here is a brief video showing you how to complete the drive cycle, this will work for ALL BMWs!
-I think it's decided Race Silver Apex ARC8 are going on the Project E36! The fitment will take some love, but it will all work and look AMAZING.
-Please follow me on instagram for updates, and this is where I will post the photographs I take at events and to share my builds.

-Stay tuned, I will have more information on my personal cars, mods I've done and plan on doing and close friend's cars so you guys/gals can see it all :)
-Let me know what you think, good or bad, I'm ready lol. I want to improve for you guys.
-Are my videos too long? Do you guys want me to shorten it down? Give me some pointers so I can make it more enjoyable for you!
-Got some more mod ideas for my F80, E90, or E36 M3? Comment!
-Like, Comment, Subscribe and share it with friends with similar interests! Let's spread the word, than I can convince the wife to add a GT3 or a R8 to the fleet haha. Ok likely other cars first, but ultimately it'll lead up to a GT3 lol.

This worked for me on the first try, thank you! 2018 Alpina B6
Awesome, it worked out for you too 🙌🏾👊🏾
Worked like a charm, thanks!
Awesome so happy it helped 👊🏾🙌🏾
Lol I have owned my e90 M for three years and I just learned something new and useful. Great content, keep it up!
Appreciate it happy to help the community 🤙🏾. Lmk if you have any questions brotha!
Congratulations. My car had an engine light on so I try to drive cycle in order to pass the smog…good tip!!!
Welcome glad it helps out the community! Don’t forget to sub I got a bunch of content coming soon 🙌🏾🤙🏾
@@AutoAddict get a good OBDII scanner tool that checks readiness for smog. Worth weight in gold for pass or not. I won't smog until scanner shows clean I/M readiness monitors.
Definitely use that to check readiness 🙌🏾👊🏾
I’m just confused because l passed everything but I’m only failing because obd wasn’t ready after I cleared codes. What do I do to reset that
Does this have to be all in a row? Because the closest highway to my house is 15 min and there’s no roads where I can go 55 without stopping. So from cold start I have to drive about 15 min with a bunch of turns and stop lights before i can do the 40-60 cruising
SwagMuny Media from my research you have to do these in no specific order. But just keep in mind the rules I posted, if you go above 3K RPM it restarts the whole process. So you can do each section separately and on different days. But if during any of the process you go above 3K RPM or any of the other criteria like speed, etc. You will have to start again! Hope that helps, and subscribe I got tons more content coming your way. Lmk if you got any other questions that I can help with.
Auto Addict yessir thank you very much that helps a ton. Yup yup I subscribed for the f80!
^^thats so helpful thank you so much (3 years later I am going through this too lol)
Do you know if we can stop between steps 2 and 3? Like if I'm between 20-30 mph for 4 mins and I need to accelerate to 40-60, can I stop at a stop light or something in between?
Supposedly you are able to stop and continue the procedure. I recommend lateeeee at night wideee open roads haha. It’s such an annoying process 😅👊🏾
@@AutoAddict Haha seriously!! And thank you, I remember staying up late last time to do this for my E92 and then taking forever cause I thought I had to pull off every step with no pause in between 😂😂
@@jh0720 🤣😅 ohh the things we do for our cars lmao!
Yo im curious im also in chicago with a catless downpipe and my bmw is tuned with bootmod3. Where in bootmod3 can you check if the sensors are in the ready position?
I never really used BM3, I used a OBD II diagnostic tool to check if my sensors were "ready."
i did this and it didn’t work did u keep ur car at steady speed lime 45? i was going from 55 to 58 i need help
i had my battery disconnected to put in new seats in my interior and in Atlanta its hard to do this readiness drive during the day to be ready for emissions which has to be done every year here.
Yea in Illinois we do it every two years, but still annoying process
Is this how u delete permanent codes as well ? I herd u have to do drive cycle i already fixed problem but codes remain permanent I can’t delete them with cheap scanner drives fine but when I turn of and cut back on check engine light I’m still
This is the drive cycle to properly get all your sensors to become “ready.” This process will not clear any CEL, this is more of an emissions tool. And those codes that can’t be deleted by a cheap scanner, must be deleted by a BMW specific diagnostic tool. Most shops will carry this and obviously the dealer. Or if you check forums a lot of locals can do it on their laptops 👍🏾. Clear it through there and problem should solve, if issue was addressed.
Drive cycles on BMW takes forever. 2 weeks of driving and roughly 250 miles to set the o2, catalyst, and evap. This is on my F82.
It’s a very annoying process and borderline not safe for public roads. That’s why I recommend to do it in the middle of the night. But if you follow the steps shown you can get the sensors to all ready up within about 2 tries of the process.
@@AutoAddict another reason why never to buy and own a BMW car again. Toyota and Honda don't have issues with Smog.
Will this work for my x5 2013 I didn’t do none of this js woke up went to the smog spot and failed
This should work for that BMW as well.
hey dude im in chicago too! live in riverside. was wondering did you get any mods done to the blue m3? can it affect emmision testing?
Live Techs yea I’ve nodded my F80 a good amount! I’ll post a video to showcase parts I chose and why. I have done mods that affect emissions. But I’m not concerned, I know someone and I can help. Lmk if you ever want to meet, can show you my setup no problem 🤙🏾. I just got carbon fiber tops manufactured. I posted it on Facebook and Instagram already and people love them. If you need something to spruce up your exhaust let me know as well. Happy to help brotha, follow along so you can see the progress of my F80, E90 and E36 M3 💪🏾
Auto Addict did you do the stage2 downpipes? im actually considering purchasing an m3 possibly spring/summer not to sure yet i rented one of turo last week and loved it man! did you take it to zima? thats near my house and work ik alot of tuners go there.
I have AA Midpipe + Zima Downpipes + Stage 2+ Alpine Motorsports Tune with beefed you exhaust. Yes I go to Zima Motorsports very often! Love that shop. Car is savage, practical and IMO one hell of a good lookin car. Let me know if you got any other questions, need a ride in a stage 2+ car, etc. If you got video ideas, lmk and I can try and get those out for you as well. I live in the Northwest Suburbs so not too far from you.
Auto Addict perfect we will stay in touch :) shhot me a text 708 252 9373. my names josip pronounced (yo-seep)
Do you have a link for the written chart you showed. Hard to read in video. Thanks
I don’t have the link, but if you search “BMW drive cycle” you will see many forum posts that show that image as well. You can pause the video and it is fairly easy to read tbh. Hope that helps, don’t forget to sub. Got a ton more content coming 🙌🏾
I have an f10 535i will a Jb4 cause my sensors to not come back on?
Depends on your settings. For JB4 you want to flash back to stock, and put stock downpipes if you have them. Because if you have aftermarket downpipes, then likely your using JB4 to hide CEL. But if your stage 1 with stock downpipes, you should be able to pass with the tune or just flash stock and then do emissions.
My car is at the shop right now getting new 02 sensor put in. Will I have to do these steps as-well to get my car to pass,
You would have to use a OBD-II scanner that has SMOG capability. Then you can check to see all the sensors that’s are “ready” for SMOG. Technically you will have to do these steps to get your sensors to show “ready” sooner.
@@AutoAddict thank you
Hey how are you I have a bmw 335i o dont pass be cause I have a tun what I can do?
If you have a tune unfortunately you either need to have the tuner do something, which most would never. Or you would have to know "somebody" that can get you to pass in your area. This will only work for cars trying to ready up their sensors after completing repairs or reverting back to stock from a tune.
What is the mileage traveled and time elapsed during that forced drive cycle?
Honestly it's not a set mileage or time. I ran the process a few times and that did the trick.
what if your catless with a tune, and the 02s are turned off, does this work?I’ve been driving like 65 for 20mins about 30 miles and back on the high way
Because that’s what the mechanics told me lol smh
Unless your tune specifically gives you “ready” for sensors you will not pass with stage 2 catless just because CEL is gone. The CEL and emissions are two different things. You must have no CEL, but you also must have ready on all sensors state requires.
@@AutoAddict
oh okay thank you so much that was very helpful
lol, I know bro, I replaced my plugs and coils now mine failed inspection.
Ohhh no emissions and state inspections are soooo annoying lol. Like my catless setup is bad for the environment, but let’s not stop the person that has bumpers taped on and wheels about to fall off 🤪. Makes sense to me hahah.
One question when it says come to a complete stop decelerating do you step on the brake or car will slowly come to a stop by itself because car will keep moving if u don't brake the car help!!!! Catalytic still not ready
Don’t forget to subscribe haha. But unfortunately you do have to “decelerate” with no braking being applied. And they say it is best to complete the drive cycle 2/3 times to make sure all sensors thoroughly get ready. Hope that helps 🤙🏾!
Say no more i subscribe and thanks for the reply
How long did it took you to finally have your catalytic ready? I live in California in LA
@@matiasdmichael I want to say it took me 2 or 3 separate occasions! Then I ran an OBD II scanner to see which sensors got ready. Only some scanners will show that type of functionality.
@@AutoAddict can We use the hand Brake to decelerate???
i live in LA, if i do this at night, will my car be ready to pass smog the next day ?
I just did this at 2am and the few cars/people looked my way like if it was drunk or stupid. However, it worked.
When you deaccelerate, what mph should you hit the brakes?
You can use the brakes on the deceleration portion that last step until you come to a stop.
What was going on with the tune? Why did you need to flash back?
If you are running catless most tunes will code out the CEL from your test pipes/downpipes. But when it is emissions time, when they plug into the OBD it will not function like OEM so you get rejected or don’t pass emissions.
@@AutoAddict Is there any way to tell if there's a tune on the car that does this? I just picked up a 335i and all my emissions monitors on the torque app say "not available" instead of "incomplete"
@@maxscarblog most tuners can plug in and tell you. But if you do the process I explained and none of your sensors ready up, chances are you are tuned.
Hey just wondering if i can do the drive cycle and need to give the emissions test the next day, or can i go the emissions later on as well?
No this isn’t a quick fix really. So if the car is repaired of all issues. And now you need to “ready” up the sensors this is the technique. Once sensors get ready they don’t change unless you reset the car through battery swap or by clearing codes. I’m sure there are other ways but these are the main ways I know haha.
@@AutoAddict Thanks for the quick reply, I detuned my car to stock, and drove about 300 miles, and went to emissions test yesterday, they said my O2 sensor, O2 sensor heater and catalyst arent ready, so didnt proceed to test it. So once I complete the drive cycle, Should i be good to go then?
@@sankey5915 technically yes. So you may have to do it more than once because some parameters didn’t complete. If you have a CEL OBD II scanner some of them will also show when the specific sensors are “ready.” So that makes it easier and less likely chance to fail emissions. So you can go in and guaranteed pass. Or your local auto store should let you use theirs for free.
Learned this today. Flashed my car this morning and went to emmission testing station. Report said not ready. Now I gotta drive more to make it ready? Defeats the purpose of keeping air cleaned. SMH. And I have only 9 days left before registration expires.
Damnnn that’s the worst. It’s annoying but follow the process a couple of times and you should be golden pending there are no other little issues emissions related. Hope this video helps, subscribe I got a ton of content coming 🙌🏾👊🏾
@@AutoAddict I bought an OBD scanner and drove a bit more. Then all the categories said OK. The station passed it today. Thanks.
@@NuclearShot you’re welcome! That’s awesome it’s the biggest relief of getting emissions over with, and not having to deal with it for a few more years lol 🤙🏾
My registration has expired and now my f13 just sits. I don’t know what to do
Will the drive cycle still run if you just drive it regularly
Yes theoretically it would work! It all depends on the pace at which the sensors become ready and how soon you need it ready.
What’s up dude good content
Jay Roza1219 appreciate the love brotha! Means a lot, sometimes I wonder if I’m just wasting my time lol. But comments like this keep me motivated 🙌🏾. Stay tuned got a bunch more content of all my cars coming up 🤙🏾.
No bro u are not wasting your time I love all the videos I always drop a like and watching your videos I’m motivated everyday to get another M3 soon.. keep uploading these videos 👊🏻
Will this cheat any existing codes that will be cleared before doing this cycle?
This is not a hack, more once you go back to stock. Most cars require a drive cycle in order to show emissions center your car is good and all sensors reading "ready"
@@AutoAddict unfortunately i have issues with my primary cats on e90. I remember doing this cycle with e60 m5 but it was clean with no issues and no codes.
Can I do this with a bad o2 sensor reset
If you’re trying to see if they function and want them to show “ready,” yes this process should work.
@@AutoAddict I just bought my 335i and the guy kinda was dishonest and the 02 were bad. Was curious if I could just clear the code and take it in for emissions or will that not work.
@@Phettraining86 I don’t think that would work.
70 miles later and everything is passing except O2 Sensor any tips?
OGArtworks ™ I would suggest to continue to do the 2 middle steps. Be sure not to cross 3K RPM, don’t abruptly get on gas, and you can’t go above 60mph.
Auto Addict Man, this is gonna be hard especially since i’m in L.A. Great video btw.
OGArtworks ™ appreciate it, but honestly I usually go middle of the night in a not so populated city and I just do the drive cycle lol. I put my hazards on if my speed is suspect haha! Trust me even in the middle of the night there are a lot of people here too.
Put cataclean when you got 1/4 tank
Have de code p1188, will try this and let you know, I have a 1999 z3
I got a fill sensor on my DEF tank that is out and I can't pass with the light on....For a fill sensor light. Are you kidding me, everything works fine...Replace the sensor is about 2 grand
Did this last time and i have to do it again smh lol
🤣😮💨
Fuck I got to do this again n my air pump message it's on again may just put new plates instead of testing fuk Illinois emissions
If you secondary air pump message is on purchase a tune lol. That way you can run OEM file with secondary EVAP bypass. So you don't get a code for secondary air pump. That's what I needed to do, that part doesn't do anything it's only there for emissions. Then when emissions are done, pass the test and then enjoy stage 1 or 2 it's worth it. If you don't want to do any of that just private message me on Instagram @m3appu. I might be able to help...
BMW needs to fix this defect in their cars and doing it in manual BMW is a big pain in the ass!
Honestly I do this to myself lol. All my cars are tuned, which is the only reason why I run into any issues for emissions.
I'm going thru the same bs rn. We gotta find better hax for this. What a waste of miles and time
Def one annoying aspect of BMW ownership once especially once modified haha! Good luck brotha 🙌🏾👊🏾
If you think about it doing this is dangerous for traffic behind you. Speaking from experience. I love bmw but they are a pain in the butt.
100% agreed! It is not an easy task, especially on public roads. So I agree do your due diligence, and be very alert. It’s definitely not worth an accident. But if you pay attention it can be a painless process in the middle of the night haha.
@@AutoAddict put emergency blinkers on and drive slowest lane. BMW needs to fix their cars to make them pass smog. No other car has this pain in the ass issue for smog.
Climate Czar John Kerry's private jet dumps more crap in the air in 1 hour than the BMW does all year.
