I appreciate the balance in your reviews. You don't gloss over the flaws like small bubbles in the resin but you also don't claim it's garbage because of them. Like you said, this is a good entry level egg shell and raden pen and there's a reason it's $250, not $1,000+
I visited a lacquer shop (in Hoi Ann, if I recall correctly), that does a lot of eggshell lacquer work when I visited Vietnam. Vietnamese lacquerwork is its own style and quite different from Japanese work. I bought some pieces, which I quite enjoy. The Vietnamese use Goose eggs, some of which has been colored darker (smoked?). So there are different lacquerware traditions in different regions. BTW, I visited a Japanese lacquer house back i 2017, and its is much much different from the Vietnamese shop in many ways. I imagine that Indian lacquer shops are themselves very different from both Japanese and Vietnamese.
David you always have such interesting anecdotes and little stories. The pen thoughts are always great, but I also look forward consistently to hearing about something fun like arcades :)
Entry level, eggshell raden? Kudos to Delmoon for providing such a thing. You can place tiny eggshell bits, cover them in varnish, but a decent clip is hard? Thanks, David.
“These things called quarters…” 😂I remember things called “dimes” that would magically enable one to make a phone call from a “Pay Phone.” Our arcade was Le Mans. It was tucked into the dark corner of the mall. I’ve never had good spatial relations nor a quick reactions, so when I was there, it was mostly to watch friends play. I’m not sure what I think about the pen. On the one hand, maybe it’s good enough for the price and it seems to write well, which is important. Aside from the aesthetics, do the bubbles weaken the lacquer? I think what really troubles me is the clip and sharp edge of the “ball” cover. There’s about the disregard for damage to clothes or possibly fingers that puts me off. Personally, it’s too large for me to hold comfortably, but that has nothing to do with the quality of the pen. I, like you, will be interested to see how this company evolves.
I acquired the Delmoon Avatar Raden Waves and found it to be a beautiful, smooth writing pen. I liked it so much I then bought the Avatar OM-Shiva as one of my Christmas gifts to myself. They are both well worth the price.
Very nice review, David. At it's price point it is a great pen. I am glad you go on a journey for pen manufacturers that are not well known. What about the gold nib in your description?
I am still so very sad I missed out on the Lamy Dark Lilac, the pen as well as the ink! 😭 I got back into the hobby a year later, with the Lamy Petrol (still one of my favorites). Not sure what to think of the eggshell/raden combination. I think I would prefer just the raden, or just the eggshell, not the combination. Thanks for sharing! 😊
These are exactly the issues that have prevented me from buying a Delmoon. The cost is a LOT more accessible... but I think I'd rather hold out for a pen with that attention to detail that comes with a higher cost. And if that means I never actually own one... well, maybe that's how it'll go.
David you did a wrong comparison from resin pens and Urushi pens ,for your knowledge In clear resin you can see all three dimensions of the egg shells so you can see the thickness but you won’t see in urushi lacquer, I heard from Japanese artist an eggshells absorb the Urushi lacquer colors so looks darker, they make own style pen, I have got four custom pens from Delmoon's India, They are well made and exceptional quality, Their all pens well-made and piece of art.
Liked the video if only for the trip down the video arcade memory lane (as a kid, I was OBSESSED with Q-Bert). ETA: Also, I appreciate the balanced review, acknowledging that for its limitations, it's a pen that has its upsides and one that might be a fine purchase for people looking for a more affordable price point. (Raises hand.)
David! If you like that purple you would probably also like Robert Oster "Deep Purple". I got some in a random sample pack from Goulet, and I'm planning to add it to my collection as soon as I can!
Regarding eggshell I don’t know (I‘m not really into eggshell), but for example the Conklin Duragraph and the Xezo Maestro have models that use abalone coating at a competitive price point. I personally own each of those and they look really great and are also nice writers.
That is actually worse than I imagined it to be. There is much better use of $200-$300 in fountain pens, Tianzi for example. Delmoon needs to get a lot better to justify this price. Based on what I see on IG they are cranking pens out left and right. Some are unique-ish while others are derivative at best. So many other companies earn our respect and money more than this one at this point.
What other $200-300 raden pens are there? Tianzi looks interesting, I suppose, but neither model interests me enough to spend $300 and several months waiting for it.
@@AndreaP_N7 To make better use of your money there are a great many very good pens from major manufactures and craft makers that are well made and artistically interesting. The Tianzi pens I mentioned are well made, write well, and represent excellent value in urushi fountain pens. Used Pilot raden vanishing points , some pens from Atelier Lusso, Tianzi, Morgan Wisser and a few others may get you in raden /rankaku for about the same amount of money. At least this Delmoon is not well made in any way. You could do much better yourself. I've done a lot of rankaku work--it's tedious but what I saw in the video was very poor.
Eep, I don't like the shape at all. Not much elegance to me, it swoops dramatically but awkwardly. Just not very artistic in it's ratios and composition.

It is good to see that you cover an extended range of pen qualities with fairness, yet realistic explorations.

Whoa! My eyes flew wide open when you whipped out that Taccia. Talk about a casual bomb. 😂

I have a Sakura design from them (just raden, no eggshell) and I didn't notice any bubbles on it at all. I love my pen.

Thanks David! This was a very fair review and i appreciate your thoroughness. Also, i loved Galaga! 🚀

Hey. I love Q-Bert. That game was what I considered to be my first really challenging Atari video game
Qbert and Lemmings....ahhh the memories!
I like the section.

If Delmoon spent more time on attention to detail, this pen would have been a much higher quality pen.
Loved Q*Bert! But wasn’t great at it!

Delmoon sounds like delike/moon man
Great review!
My game was Galaga.
I was big into Galaga as well. The power you felt when you got the double ships!

Yuck. Looks like a dirty, cracked, hard-boiled egg. No thanks! 😢
