  • We're driving the 2024 Cadillac XT4 Sport... again. And Nile can't help thinking about how much better this subcompact luxury crossover would have been as a PHEV.

On this episode of TestDrive, Nile goes down GM Memory Lane to revisit GM's hybrid technology and development over the decades, and how their decision to abandon it might have been their biggest missed opportunity of the 21st century. During our research we found out that GM's very first hybrid vehicle launched in 2004, which was years sooner than we had originally thought. the PHT, or Parallel Hybrid Truck was based on a Silverado but used what we'd call a mid-hybrid system today. 5 Years later the Tahoe, Yukon, and Escalades along with the Silverado all received a proper hybrid option, via a 6L V8 engine producing just under 380 horsepower.
Shortly after that GM changed the game, launching the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, the world's first extended range plug-in electric vehicle. Using a gas generator to recharge the battery on the fly, the Volt was an instant hit. Cadillac even launched the ELR for the 2012 and 2014 model years, selling fewer than 3,000 units during those two production years.
Chevrolet also sold the Malibu as a hybrid, along with the next-generation Silverado with a proper mild-hybrid which they called eAssist. Then it all went away. GM axed their hybrid and PHEV development and focused on full EVs, a decision that might have seemed like a good one in 2018, but not so in 2024.
We discuss our thoughts on why a vehicle like the 2024 Cadillac XT4 Sport should have come as a PHEV, or a hybrid at the very least, and what GM's future could have looked like had it stuck with those technologies. General Motors isn't the only brand who went in this direction, but we wanted to highlight these important vehicle milestones that may have been missed.

GM is just too cozy with Washington politics and the climate mafia. EV's got the government's blessing so that's where R&D money went.

Complete 180 from what GM was trying in the 90s then with the EV1.

Was that a review of the XT4 or just a bitching and moaning session. very long video to make a point that could have been made earlier and then review the actual vehicle.

@@ericandrews1751 James features the XT4 Sport with the exact same configuration a month prior, so redoing another regular review on the same vehicle felt pointless.

Is it “To Late” for GM as Toyota and others are selling hybrids in Record numbers ??!

Never say never, but part of the reason (opinion) why GM's hybrids didn't take off were due to them being inferior to the competition, but that was also because they didn't invest in the R&D to make them better. Brands like Mazda went from zero electrification to offering an EV, several PHEVs, and some mild hybrids in a short span, so a large company like GM should be able to ramp up good options quickly and catch up.

I don't care about hybrid. Most hybrids have slower acceleration.

You haven’t driven a modern hybrid then, or keep it in eco mode.

@@PRNTestDrive I have. I've test driven the 2024 Mercedes GLC 300 and its hybrid actually improves acceleration like the C8 Corvette eray.

      I currently own a C7 Corvette stickshift.
I'm currently in the market to replace my 2014 Toyota Highlander with either the 2024 Mercedes GLC300 or 2024 Cadillac XT4 or 2024 Toyota Highlander.

We featured the Highlander a few years ago, and I recently drove it on a cross-Canada event I was part of. The Highlander is a bit dated at this point, whereas the Mercedes is pretty new. The XT4 really hasn't changed since it was first introduced, a slight facelift gives it a bit of life but it isn't enough to compete against the other German luxury brands. If it were my money I'd go GLC.
