I swear to god this channel is a goddamn gem dude. Video after video I feel like I have improved something, thank you so much fore all the effort you put into it all man.
I think one of the hardest parts here, you are dealing with a well mastered track. So you are matching a tone well to the perceived audio after EQ on individual tracks and the whole track, probably. To replicate that with just the tone knob and switch is pretty impressive. Great video!
I just have an acoustic guitar, I've been playing yvette songs on acoustic and I really love her music. Not knowing anything about electrics guitar nor pedals, I enjoyed this video a lot. Makes me hopeful to play one of my favourite songs (nero) when I get my electric guitar
This was shockingly close! The real heroes for me were was the RC Booster and the Mercury7; I already knew that the Merc was amazing for giving these riffs the much needed wash in the ocean, but I never realized how useful the RC Booster was - I'd always written it off as just another low-to-medium-gain overdrive for step-fathers, but it juiced up your tones nicely and gave it that extra push into mild lo-fi territory. Having seen her live, I can confirm that her tone does edge a little bit darker (which is key for co-existing with Forrest's drum sounds, even though they don't run that bright either) and is overall more "pushed" than the album tones. I think the main source of her live "push" is actually the Warden and the MXR 10-Band EQ, since there wasn't any real front-end gain to the sound, just a lot of very well balanced volume into a happy amp. Nice job adapting to the demands of the songs with the equipment you have, and excellent command of the fingerpicking. Question to consider: how essential are the single-coils to getting this sort of sound? Could a good neck or middle position on a guitar with two passive humbuckers get close enough to work properly with everything else downstream?
Thanks for your input was insightful 👍 I'm not sure about humbuckers. Given that her tone is quite dark already they may be well suited for that. I think you'll have to adjust for the hotter output of humbuckers too 👍
@@LetsTalkAboutMathRock Thanks for the reply, Steve! In my personal experience, humbuckers have been working well for the clean tones, but I'm still working the kinks out of the drive tones because the humbuckers have a slightly different attack sound that slightly blunt moments like the drive section in Glimmer. Definitely workable, and I need to actually get the parts down before I make up more excuses :P
Thank you sooo much! This was a great breakdown, with a lot of usefull info about the parameters of the pedals. ♥️😎 Keep it up, you rock ^2 (squared, as in math 🤷🏻♂️) lol 💪
You could certainly use some VST plugins, if you have an audio interface and a DAW. Possibly a multieffects pedal, but these typically don't have the best quality for individual effects, just a lot in one package. But I'm sure there are decent cheap ones you could use
The secret: be some sort of mega-talented musical wizard. The effects are just icing. Yvette is the living embodiment of the expression “the tone is in the fingers”
Everything on her youtube channel just sounds like she's getting blasted, jamming and making things up as she plays. it will sound like she's coming up with a riff, but nothing ever repeats, so it makes me wonder if she can remember anything being played haha.
Hi, greetings from México, I'm on a budget. Do you think a MXR dyna compr would make it? Not for Yvette's tone, but ratter for a math rock tone in general?
Dyna comp has a slow attack and that can be a turn off for some. I've personally never tried one so I could say. If you can get a NUX sculpture instead get that 👍
Haha. Depends on the type. Some are designed as a clean boost, giving you more volume. Depending on where you have your amp set it can push it into overdriven tones. Depends on the amp, won't really have the same effect on soild state amplifiers. Check out the JHS episode on boosters if you want more info 👍
Excellent tone and video as always, that sweater isn't doing you any favors though. Kinda like your Gran sheered Chewbacca and knitted it into a sweater. Cheers to your Gran though, that is a special kind of love.

There's that too. Probably EQ a lot of the low end out of the guitar too to give the bass frequencies space in the mix. I'll guess we'll never know. 😅
The tone on glimmer is phenomenal! Such a beautiful song
Love how it sounds in the last section!
Reminds me of Sokot Band from South Korra
Yeah that one is great! I also love her tone on Parrot, both the clean and dirty tones are just soo perfect
