- The baby of the Canon family - suprisingly great value if you can do without some of the features.
In Australia I recommend Digital Camera Warehouse: bit.ly/DCWaus
Outside Australia I recommend Adorama: bit.ly/Adorama_USA & Amazon: bit.ly/Amazon_usa

Good to see someone making videos on not only the latest and greatest but also on gear that's a little older but still relevant. Thanks Matt.
Everything was going great up until 4:45

if you use manual focus you can better background blur or by upgrading to a bigger lens
***** A blurred back ground is a function of the 'depth of field' determined by the f-stop used. I.e. f2 has a much smaller d.o.f than a f16 setting. So, if you want to blur the background, use manual exposure and select a low f-stop. Manual focus isn't the key, although the more manual modes you use, the more control you have over the final image. Whether you focus manually or autmatically, a sharp focus on the subject is important, blurring the background is down to the f-stop.
Duncan Robertson can you suggest me which one is better the nikon 80d or nikon 1100d.
Louis Ryan sorry canon 1100d *
I've had this camera for a while now and I love it, im hoping to start some more professional photography with it and I cannot wait to get started. It's a brilliant little camera and I love it.
I want to buy one Canon 1100d but I haven't any idea about it. so please help me for find a batter one. thank you.
For people who want more (period), Sony RX100 (494€ on amazon's Italy) it's a better choice (no need to think which lens it's better for them ecc ecc).
For people who want more *AND* learn, improve, ecc ecc Canon 1100D is nice (320€, with 18-55 included). Canon 550D with 18-55 it's around 500-550€. And I think Matt refers to people who want to upgrade without spending extra money. So saying 550D it's a better bargain...I don't think at least for the type of people Matt is reffering to.
Hi Matt,
picking the 1100D to review as a stepping stone into the world of the DSLR was an interesting if strange move, since the 1100D is Canons best entry Level DSLR.
The 550D is now being discontinued as there is the new 650D, but shops still have lots of 550Ds and they are almost as cheap now as the 1100D.
The 550D almost same options more, if you´re choosing to do videography, even using 3rd party enhancements like MagicLantern to turn a 550D into a pro DSLR.
Still, thanks for the video
Argh this camera brings back bad memories.. got ripped off in HKG.. paid $1k for it..yes I wanted to jump off Victoria Peak..eh got the D800 now so f u Hong Kong con artist! Honestly nothing wrong with it as a camera though in that price range!
You say the rear screen is only 230K, does that mean the picture will come out any less then thru the view finder or other camera with high resolution screen?
I do have thing camera, I do wish I saved a few more bucks though for the t3i. I upgraded to full frame and now use this as my RELIABLE backup.
The T3i sells for under $400 from canon and it's way ahead of the regular T3!
I got my 1100D with non IS kit lens for A$400 almost 4 weeks ago from domayne. Love it.
i was having the 1100d, at least 770 shoot with 1 charge
650d going near 400-450
The €300 you could save up on this body, is €300 more you could spend on a lens.
i'd buy a lx7 if i dont wanna swap lenses.
This does make me laugh, because you have a guy here who is a Technical geek. Most men are technical geeks not photographers. There is a big difference.
He describes this camera as 'entry level' and it is funny where he says 'only 12 mega pixels' he positions this as though it is something you will eventually move beyond. Technical learning and moving to the most advanced camera is not about photography. Knowing how to use the camera is the smallest aspect of photography.
The golden rule to remember is that photography can only be learned to a small degree, it is about having a creative brain and eye, not about knowing tech stuff.
'moving into DSLR' is nonsense. The essential principles of composition, perspective, colour balance, shape, contrast first appear in your brain. It makes little difference having technical knowhow if the image is rubbish.
Remember that no 1 is: are you a photographer? And that means are you creative, can you master basics such as drawing? If you don't have a creative brain then don't bother. No amount of tech learning will make any difference, you will just be one of those 'my lens is longer than yours' idiots, which 99% of men that wield a camera are.
We see time and time again the art student who has never taken a picture in their life outperforming all of the photographic experts with a one click disposable camera.
My own fault probably, biggest lesson learned though...
or nikon d3100 is a good choice too
fewer shots per charge? oh really?
you can take up to 800 pics with one charge...
I have one now for now for not quite a year and love it it my fist Digital of this type was canon fan in the film cameras for many years and using a Canon F1,but have not used it in some time due to film cost. You keep saying the Battery isn't that good but i have had no issue at all I got 2 extra one thinking i be changing it often but I gone to Dog Show with my wife and didn't need to change the battery once. and I took tons of pictures. Just got two new Lens an EFS 55-250mm and a EF 70-300mm
Are brands particularly important then?
Great camera for a start, I own 1000d, bought it used almost two years ago with a kit lens, and this camera really helped me to move from "shoot everything I see" to a semifinals of largest nature contest in the country. Now I plan to buy a mk2, but if you just starting at photography - 1000/1100D used now costs no more then 250$ - isn't it a great way to start learning photography?
whats that on your face man ! lol
Why would you buy this old camera over all entry level DSLR's? I think it would be wise if you gave you oppinion on the best enrty level DSLR's and reasons why you should pick one over an other.
Say I would have listened to your advice, what next? Do I buy a kit with Canon's plastic lenses?
Come on Matt, this isn't a review or good advice. Back up your story by showing that even you can be happy with this camera. I know that you have an idea for making this video, WHAT is it?
I have 1100D love it I bought mine with kit lens and since have bought some vintage prime lenses for it that work better in low light to record my disco shows and learned a lot from watching your videos so thank you.. will add really good camera for the price got me more into it have eyes on a 650D next
What's with the moustache?
I own this camera and want a video on how to use the video and how to get more sound on this thing for the video. Can u help me? I do love the picture quality on this camera.
how did they do that?^^
I got the Canon EOS 1100D recently and am finding it a fantastic camera. It's brilliant. I have been watching your videos on photography and find them very informative and have learnt different ways of taking photos and understand the settings a lot better and about lenses and all other equipment you cover in your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

what I meant is, that the 1100D isn´t Canons best entry level DSLR!!! :)
