      While we do not recommend airport travel with the Capsule since airports have their own complex systems, we have never had any reports or experience with compromised security when going through airport security or carry-on luggage. The Capsule tiles cannot be viewed with an X-ray, and even opening it would only allow the first letter to be visible. I suppose the only safe tattoo place would be inside your mouth - enjoy doing a DIY 24-word tattoo there!
      Here is a tweet showing what the Capsule and Cassette look like under an X-ray: twitter.com/cryptosteel/status/1339550765808017410

    I do plan to buy some cassette versions, but I do not understand how this capsule can be useful. One letter at a time when reading the phrase... Why would I prefer this to the cassette? Also, are you proposing it's a good idea to wear this around my neck? Should it not preferably be in the heavy vault with the hardware wallet at all times? And are there really wallets that use anything else than uppercase letters?

    • @Cryptosteel
      @Cryptosteel  2 года назад +2

      In our view, the Capsule is an upgrade of the Cassette due to its added space, secure shell, and wider range of storage options. While reading the seed phrase will be slower, this is also an activity that should be extremely rare. No, we definitely don't recommend it - it was just meant to be an aesthetic way to show the size. Some wallets do use upper and lowercase, and we wanted to be as accommodating to as many types of wallets as possible.

It’s much easier to just use pre-engraved pieces of steel that have been stress tested. Don’t get me wrong though, I think there’s room to improve upon what crypto steel has done here, no doubt, but why bother with an inferior solution? This only protects against most forms of destruction, not all and certainly doesn't protect against loss or worse theft. Seems much simpler to store multiple copies in an encrypted file on a $2 thumb drive or even use an encrypted drive ($50). Can store multiple lists and other secure data on a single device while being both protected against loss or destruction if you use multiple backups at secure locations (safety deposit box/home safe/wherever).

      Malware, phishing and hacker attacks are a threat to any information stored on a computer or usb device. That's why these types of devices exist. @tridave9811 3 года назад +2

      @@MrFooChops
      First, the device in the video is a single purpose device designed to backup a seed key for a crypto wallet. Since it is unencrypted, it provides NO SECURITY if someone gets a hold of it. They can readily clone the crypto wallet and transfer all the assets without it being attached to a computer and just as importantly need no expertise to decrypt the data it stores. It is expensive, difficult to setup or change and still only provides a single point of failure (some forms of destruction), lose it and the data is gone.
      The alternative would be to use a secure USB drive*, every bit as secure as a crypto wallet (even more than some that use chips with vulnerabilities to physical attacks) to backup the seed key. Easy to copy or modify data it and cheap in comparison to have multiple to store in separate secure locations. This provides multiple failure points without worrying if someone ever finds one since even with the secure USB drive, they do not have access to any of the data unless they can break the security. I'm also able to store multiple crypto wallet seeds as well as any other data I want to keep secure on them make them much more versatile and much easier to use than any physical steel key set.
      So yes, a USB device does have to be connected to be useful but recovery from the seed is an extremely rare situation so these devices would not need to be connected often.
      *Even storing encrypted files on a plain USB device off line this way would be more than adequate for the average user. The best part about the encrypted drives is someone can't copy them and leave them behind to work on decrypting the files while the owner has no idea the files have been taken. I'd probably use a regular USP if I were storing hundreds in a crypto wallet anything much more than that would be worth a secure USB to me.

      @@tridave9811 Great idea. Also, whenever you need to access the data you can connect it to a computer that is 100% offline.

    don't quite get why it is more useful than keeping a back up on an encrypted sd card

      Sd card can be damaged or corrupted. This is 100% physical 100% in your control to lose or damage it and you need no other piece of technology to access the seed

      It’s for people who don’t have the means to put together a properly air gapped computer in a secure environment. Also, an SD card is probably not as strong as a couple of steel discs.

      @AnthonyShuker 4 года назад +11

      damn i'd trust a piece of paper more than an SD card. Flash memory does NOT last forever. What if the card got corrupted? Paper is bad because of the environment, data backup bad because potential to lose data. So the steel is more efficient,
      Fun fact, stone can last tens of thousands of years out in the open where as metal would rust away very quick, compared. Technically we should all engrave it on stone but obviously not practical for hiding it
