I consider myself in a great place in my recovery! Do I still have intrusive thoughts? Yes. Do I still, sometimes, feel the urge to perform compulsions? Yep. My sense is that this connects to the original situation that caused the pattern. Some people might not be able to remember, but my mother was intensely reactive and critical. I have journals from age 7 which basically show that an early age I became OCD in an attempt to try to avoid getting yelled at or punished. For a naive child this expectarion makes sense- but for adults we naturally have to deal with spontaneous events and stress. Everyone has intrusive thoughts or anxiety from time to time. It’s about being a functional adult right? And that’s far from perfect.

I went out of depression thanks to therapy only to find myself in a swamp of anxiety. The illness surely traumatized me and hard coded to think negatively about anything. All the time I got angry at me for no enjoying this depression-free life so it got worse and worse. I finally can except these thoughts and treat them as what they are: neutral content of my mind. Eventually they will get less and less the more I code my brain into thinking positively, but mabye not ;) Thats the key. IT DOESNT MATTER! Thanks, your channel really helped me to understand.

I realised that sometimes I am obsessing that if I don't do ERP something bad will happen to me (e.g. I will lose control because of OCD or become a terrible person whom everyone avoids, etc.). Always love your videos Nathan, for me (I know everyone's different) they are now too fast for the information to be informative and to sink into the brain. The early videos were more slower and longer, but gave the brain time for the info to sink in. This one is so fast! that the info is a blur - watching your videos now is like running to try and catch a train - hurry, hurry hurry. So many editing tricks that the info is lost - just my opinion, but will continue to watch and re-watch. At the moment I'm on the 'second-time-around' watching all the videos and live chats. Just a little (hopfully) helpful criticism, but you were the first ideal therapist I watched on here - and I will continue.

Im not sure if you’ll ever see this but I’m not diagnosed with OCD. Im still pretty young and I’m terrified of self diagnosing myself. Im feeling intense shame and regret for some stuff I did as a kid. I keep on trying to reassure myself that I’m not going to become a bad person but then my thoughts instantly just get worse and I go over things in my head to make sure I don’t get a positive reaction out of it. I got an intrusive thought of something I might’ve done a few minutes ago and I felt physically nauseous. I want to tell my parents about it but I’m honestly scared to do so. Any advice?

    • @alecempire8982

If it does not notably interfere with your life then it might not be OCD, however if it takes up too much of your time then you might have the disorder. FYI for real event OCD, which is what you might be experiencing, look at this way. You are not 100% good or 100% bad. You have to accept the fact that you are 98% a good person. Thats how people without OCD look at it and you should as well. Hint: there are no 100% good or 100% bad people in this world so give up trying to live life without making a mistake, its impossible.

I see social media comments like "Bro let his intrusive thoughts win" and I think oh my intrusive thoughts will someday come true. But my evidence shows that I'm a person that's relatively calm, composed and valued. So, with this mindset, 1 yr down the line, I'll propose my GF and 2yrs down the line, I'll marry.
Yes, sometimes ROCD may occur, sometimes I might look at other cute or hot women and let my brain do the comparisons with my GF, and maybe think "Why don't I have such a hot person" But I know, it's natural to get attracted to other people, while being in a relationship, we're humans after all.
My girlfriend is the cutest, she's small, she's hot, she's everything I'd die for and can't live without.

I can’t find the video, but I listened to one this morning that claimed that OCD sufferers have a portion of our brain that swells as our symptoms get worse and recedes as we go into recovery. It makes sense as I have bouts of lightheartedness when OCD is strong.
That said I think it doesn’t help to think in terms of any way that might make us seem special.
We can get to the same mind state that non sufferers are at. I know bc I’m currently in my second major harm OCD bout. In the 10+ years in between my previous recovery and my current condition I was able to shrug off most intrusive thought.

It's absolutely possibly to reduce the severity of it a great deal. I've lived with it for over a decade and it's not a walk in the park. But by undergoing the process of treatment (by not engaging with compulsive behaviours, etc), you will become virtuous in terms of becoming braver, more disciplined, more mentally resilient and that's a huge part of OCD recovery and becoming a better person and a better man. This is how I view it. I embrace the anxiety, the intrusive thoughts/obsessions because I know it will improve me and grant me the opportunity to be virtuous.

I think you can recover from OCD and live a life with no symptoms. I did for over 10 years with medication. I don’t think there’s a cure in the sense that it’s gone forever since I think the potential for it to come back is always there. It’s more like remission
I’m struggling again after many intense stressful situations but I know I’ve gotten out of it before and it’s possible to live a happy life with no or little symptoms that don’t get in the way of you living life.

"Choose to not do compulsions" mental compulsions are not a choice you just do them automatically

Some are. Some aren't. People can practice awareness training with the automatic, and choose to not engage with them overtime.

I know not feels impossible not to do mental compulsions, but you can stop them in their tracks. Use non engagement responses.

I always fear of being triggered by content like this, not to find fault in anything though. If someone’s definition of recovery from OCD is being symptom free, at least from their specific intrusive obsession (and I really have seen people like Mark Freeman and Ali Greymond who are not “managing” their OCD anymore), we should learn to also respect and honor that definition and not see it as “unrealistic” or even “deceptive”. People like them offered me a lot of hope when I was high key suicidal from OCD, compared to those who only advocate for a chronic management of the condition. But that is just me.

I appreciate your thoughts. One main point of this video is for people to not fall for the sales tactics of "You can fully recover. Look at me. I did. Licensed therapists are wrong."
Because what they aren't telling you are the times they are managing their symptoms because it would go against their original sales pitch.
Ultimately, what it all comes down to is that everyone is different and you focus on what works for you. Anything is possible.

Mark Freeman would very adamantly tell you that the search for a life without the symptoms is useless though

@@russellnoe3054 not saying that I am searching for a life without symptoms, but i think comapred to other channels where they only talk about "managing" OCD, Mark's recovery story and his overcoming of his OCD offers me a lot of hope. Also, for Ali Greymond, she says she has completely recovered from OCD, I don't think we are in any position to deny or refute her claim as we are not her.

@@ocdandanxiety Thanks. But i only agree with the last paragraph. I don't think the ones I have come across said licensed therapists are wrong. Also, I also don't believe just because one is licensed means he or she can help everyone (not saying you, I am just saying in general). Ultimtaley, different methods work for different people as long as they do not advocate for the doing of compulsions/ruminations/avoidances.
Also, I know what you are trying to convey in the second paragraph. But I am a bit disappointed that you also put your own assumption onto other people's recovery and chucking it up to "not going against their original sales pitch." If they indeed made a full recovery, I don;t think we are in any position to judge their recovery journey.
That being said, I appreciate your response. Your content is still better than some like Chrissie Hodges who put her own expectations of recovery onto others and say that OCD is chronic with no hope. Her content left me suicidal and hopeless. Let's just keep it at that.

Hmm you actually don’t. You have a different definition of recovery. People here want to feel normal again and not be bothered by their thoughts. No one wants to coast along and cope until the next big theme.

Very depressing, confusing and discouraging video. So, full recovery (becoming like person who never had ocd) is not an option. Just pathetic management - beeing always mentaly weak person and in danger of relapse. That is acceptable only for losers.
