"Let's see, let me play some really difficult AND iconic music. Oh yes, and I should add an actual period instrument, actually owned by one of the actual creators of said iconic music. Oh wait, I know, I'll just do it solo, even though it's originally written for a progressive rock trio. Heck, I'll just tap out some of the drum solo parts on this bench here. Hm, no bass player. Guess I'll have to play those parts with my feet. Wait, what about all those timbre changes, enabled in the original recordings by multiple keyboards and multitrack recording? Damn, I guess I'll just have to do all those drawbar switches on the fly. While playing. Solos. Oh, better also change the portamento time on the synth. While soloing. And playing kick bass. But what about the vocal parts? Sheesh, I guess I'll have to play the vocal parts on the organ, and adapt them so that they sound really soulful and not at all like the usually stilted way it sounds when most people play a vocal tune on a keyboard that doesn't have pitch bend.. And while I guess it'd be a good idea to grab huge pieces of the original guy's solos, I should probably develop my own style as well, still retaining the original harmonic approach, but just, you know, extrapolate on it a bit, maybe throw in some modal jazz influences. While kicking bass. And while whatever free fingers I have left are flying across the drawbars creating those dramatic swells, assisted by one of my feet, whenever one of them isn't playing some bass line. Let's see.. I think I've got everything on the list. Oh yeah, I better also make sure I do it musically and with as much spirit and fire as the original. Oh, and have as much fun as I can, of course, that goes without saying. And what the heck, I'll just add "make it look easy" to the list, otherwise it might not be much of a challenge. It's good that I'm getting this out of the way now, while I'm only NINETEEN. Because this could take maybe the rest of the afternoon, and I'd really like to get some sight reading in and tackle some of these cool new Braille transcriptions I got!"
He was not dead at the time he loaned her the Modular Moog. He was friends with Rachel and very impressed by her. I was in attendance when she played at his Memorial Concert at the El Rey. She was amazing and fit right in with the keyboard legends who paid tribute to this generation's Liszt.
Emerson was so much more than a "Progressive Rock" icon. I dislike people calling him a "Prog Rock keyboard player", that's like limiting him to a certain style. Genres aside, he was quite simply one of the greatest keyboard players in the world playing MANY different styles! And now we have Rachel Flowers!
Wow, now that's a gift from God, I could see Keith watch her play and be speechless, just unbelievable. It goes to show just what a genius Keith Emerson was. RIP Keith and fantastic playing Rachel, Keith would be so proud.
Brilliant playing. I am awestruck: you must be so proud, mum. RIP Keith, a legend. Misunderstood by many, but not by his true fans. We are privileged to have had him in our lives
I am a huge EL&P fan, they're by far my favorite band and every time Rachel gets EL&P on the mind she BLASTS it out of the park. The smile this raises on her face is a delight to see. She loves this music and it shows.
***** I'm assuming there is some sort of kinship between you and the subject. I am a huge ELP fan, and Rachel is a joy to listen to... and watch, for that matter.
No one who knows anything about music can possibly dislike this; they might not like this particular music, but to actively dislike... That's just not right.
***** I know it is wrong to assume, but I've been given several clues that Rachel is blind. If this is not so then please feel free to respond and straighten me out. If it is so (It makes her feats even more astounding), how does she receive the praise left for her in posts like mine?
***** I understand not making a big deal about it. As a sighted person, I just find the talent even more astonishing. I am glad the praise is getting to her.
***** I was singing Greg Lake lines while hearing her from here... awww... crying. She's wholesomely blessed. I'd wish she was my daughter... since I don't have kids. God is with you both, Amen. (she really touched my heart. I love Tarkus, as well as all ELP songs, Yes, Genesis, etc. Always wanted to play Tarkus myself but I'm a piece of junk on keyboards. God bless her).
A true musician and music lover. I love the way she taps the drums in between parts, showing that the music is in her head, heart and whole being and it's flowing through her and out of her into our ears and hearts.
I've heard many musicians with prodigious talent play Tarkus. Many pulled it off perfectly, note for note. But this rendition right here by Rachel, and the one on solo piano are by far two of the best renditions I have heard. They have so much soul and depth, that you begin to see past the complexity of the composition and just revel in its beauty. Thank you Rachel.
Got me crying again. This music is from a good part of my, probably the high spot of my life. Plus ELP is my favorite music with Bach in close contention.
This is mindblowing, i'm speechless, if there is someone who deserves to play Keith's Moog besides him it's Rachel. congratulations girl, you are one of the most incredible person in the world!
Rachel, I actually enjoy hearing YOU more than the original album because 1) I've known the music intimately since '72 and 2) hearing how impeccably you capture the exact harmonic structures (Emerson's harmonic detail and originality is simply amazing) makes me thrill to Keith's compositions in a fresh, unjaded way-the way I did when I was 15 and, 3) I LOVE your improvisations!!! Your interpretations are exactly what Keith would thrill to hear: he created this fantastic body of music that is, for you, a playground you've made your own, and you're having SO much fun with it! THAT'S WHAT MUSIC SHOULD BE. Again, I'm having more fun listening to you. My friend, you return to me the very essence of the thrill of music! I adore you!
My brother bought Tarkus LP in 1976, after discovering ELP at the age of 14, and I, at the age of 12, did not understand this music. It wasn't long, through hundreds of times the record was played in our home, until I loved ELP and became a huge fan of prog rock. Now my brother is no more among us, I'm 53, and I'm still a fan of prog rock, of ELP, and every time I listen to Tarkus, I am overwhelmed by a tsunami of emotions, but this particular version is way beyond heaven. I'm sure my brother would be delighted to listen to it.
How do people thumb down. What is wrong with people? Obviously they have no life and can;'t see how a inspiration she is being blind..Simply incredible ignorance
+Boar Hog Yup, jealousy. I've been playing guitar since the 70's and I don't get jealous of people that are better than I. They simply inspire and humble me and make me practice more.
The thumbs down people are just idiots. They must know nothing of music, culture, history, or science. They are probably the same people who are moon landing deniers or think we blew up our own buildings on 911. Google it, you will see what I mean.
Todd Baxter I think Rachel is awesome, but 9/11 was indeed an inside job. Check out the Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth website, for a start. As for the moon landing, I don't have enough information to make a guess about that one, but, knowing that our government lies to us as a matter of course, I wouldn't be surprised if it was faked. From MK Ultra to Benghazi, why would anything surprise you?
I saw ELP 7 times, I loved their genius and their professionalism. Their musicianship fitted alongside my standards of perfection, which I inherited from my musician father. Rachel Flower's talent is on a different level.....sublime or maybe even bliss....
i suffer of a sight disease TOO, and iìm trying to learn keys until i still can see so,ething. you're a reload of hope and encouragement ! go on and BRAVA !
Wow! As a keyboard player for 45 years, I feel qualified to say this. She is as close as I've ever heard playing Emerson's compositions. Having some of his equipment helps, yet it's all in the fingers and mastery of the instrument you play. Then there comes the gift that few musicians have; the ability to transfer emotion from your brain into your finger tips for someone's ears complete enjoyment and wonderment. Guitar players like David Gilmour and Gary Moore have/had this ability. She Does This with Trilogy - I can really feel it. She does a great job with Tarkus - hell! I'm been trying to master it for 10 years. I just wish she would have played Stones Of Years the way Keith did on Welcome Back My Friends... It's nice to know that Keith's legacy lives on in the form of Rachel Flowers. Keith will never die so long as there are those that play is music - his passion. Thank you Rachel, you're a gift. Sincerely, Brad Decker
I grew up since early teen years being into ELP, Yes, Floyd, etc. This is such a breath of fresh air seeing Rachel carry the legacy onward by her appreciation of those artists. This is above magnificent playing and dexterity.
As an amateur musician, I would say that this is quite a difficult piece of music, but this young lady seems to make child's play out of it. RESPECT! EDIT: I just read her page on Wikipedia and paid a brief visit to her website. I'm dumbfounded by the sheer range and variety of instruments she can play. Very very impressive. EDIT2: That ending just put a huge smile on my face! :D
From a lifetime multi instrumentalist, and ELP fan. Rachel Flowers is my new favorite all around musician in the world. Thanks to Rachel for the beautiful, joyful music, and to her parents for supporting and encouraging her love of playing music. Best wishes for your continued success Rachel!
We've lost Keith Emerson but at least we've still got Rachel Flowers !!!! R.I.P. Keith and thank you for all your hard work. We're lucky to have lived in the era of the prog greats.
Who is this talented woman who seems to be channeling the very essence of this wonderful piece of musical mastery? What a wonderful talent she has much respect is due her.
Thumbs down?I just dont believe people! They obviously have no musical knowledge. This lovely lady is simply fantastic.Thank you for brightening up my day!
Rachel Flowers is an incredible Musician...Extremely Gifted and talented and lets be totally Honest here...Anyone who is keeping the music of Emerson, Lake and Palmer Alive deserves a lot of Praise ...long may She run
Dear Rachel, I grew up with the music of Keith Emerson and was a big fan of The Nice and Emerson, Lake and Palmer. It was very sad when I heard about Keith Emerson's early suicide, because he was a part of my youth. Acidentially I found your interpretations of the old ELP classics on RUclips. It is so wonderful to see that also young people can be enthusiastic about this great music of Keith and ELP. It has moved me to tears, that a young woman, who has also a severe fate as Keith Emerson, is bringing back his music to life. The genious musician Keith Emerson, who has given his life a too early end due to the loss of his sleight of hand, lives on in a young woman, who has lost her eyesight! I thank you so much for bringing Keith Emerson's music back to my live and memory. I wish you the very best from the bottom of my heart. Stay strong! You are a gift for man and everyone in love with the music of Keith Emerson. Thank you so much! Yours sincerly Kay
must have been so extraordinary for her to play on those original instruments she knew so well from the recordings!! you can see it in her reaction at the end :)
Dear Rachel, from this particular video that I listened at least 100 times, telling my family, friends about your talent, maybe 5 years later you are being known for what you deserve and this is wonderful. You are a wonder of a person, you are amazing and a brilliant future awaits you. I'm sorry for the lost of Mr. Emerson in such tragic ways, but you are a guardian of his legacy, and a musician who can push it beyond. It will be an immense honnor to follow you through your career and I think that anybody can expect the wonders of what you will play and compose. Your fan, JS.
With that kind of passion, I sure hope Rachel gets access to these "tools" as often as she desires. Absolutely incredible. There aren't enough Thank You's for Jeanie who puts all this effort into helping make these happen and who put so much heart into documenting, editing and posting for the rest of us to share. Thank you so much, to both of you!
She learned this by ear? That's incredible! I've listened to this piece for 0ver 30 ears and know it by heart, but only in my head. When I closed my eyes I could swear it was Keith Emerson playing solo. Rachel, you're AMAZING and thanks for keeping Tarkus alive!
My jaw is bouncing off the ground. This isn't just a note perfect cover but an absolute expression of joy. Wow. Rachel is up there with the Keyboard Gods - well, Goddesses too now she has come along. Genuinely up there in some very exalted company.
Have a listen to Ligeti's Études. These were composed for the French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, who had a reputation for being able to play anything set in front of him. The composer set out to defeat this prodigious talent, who did eventually master them. #13 L'escalier du diable ruclips.net/video/uoLam2O3gtY/видео.html Some of Messiaen's works for piano and organ sound fiendishly difficult too. 😎
This Is very beautiful to watch and Hear From this young Lady..it was awesome..and the way to the End .. wow what a Girl.. and how excited she was after she was Done..
Rachel, you're my new hero! I've been an ELP fan since the 70's and it was just amazing to see and hear the time and dedication you've put into this. You are an inspiration to me and obviously many others. Also, the Zappa Plays Zappa videos from the recent tour are great. The Montana solo gave me chills.Thank you for making my day.
I listened to this album dozens (maybe hundreds?) of times back in the 70's and early 80's. Rachel truly "gets it" in bringing this piece to life. So wonderful she was able to play Emerson's modular. Plus, I really dig her feel for the Hammond. Beautiful!
My God!! You are so young to nail a song like that. Tarkus is so complex. I would love to hear you play Miracles Out of Nowhere by Kansas. Just the middle instrumental.
omg I have been listening to ELP since the seventies and girl you are smoking hot on those keys. just killed it. my hat is off. Thankyou for performing.
Thank you Rachel for making my world better. Going thru a lot right now and when I found your videos you put a smile on my face and made my day. Your are an incredible person and musician. I thank God for people like you!
So, how does one clearly too young to have been exposed to this music when it first burst on the scene 1) become familiar with it and 2) appreciate it on such a grand level? I sometimes get sad at the notion that the prog rock genre really never recovered its original popularity and that the quality of the music has been spotty at best (sorry, none of the neo-prog bands do it for me..), compared to nascent bands of the early 70s. So, when I see (hear...) examples of yung-uns embracing it, I can't help but smile. What a lovely talent you are, Ms. Flowers. Bravo!
"Let's see, let me play some really difficult AND iconic music.

Brilliant!
She is incredible.
Benny Rietveld Ha ha you nailed it.
Awesome! Nothing else to say. The music lives on!
also much faster than the original lmao
Ok so I was completely blown away by this...THEN I realized that she's blind...WOW. INCREDIBLE
When it comes to music it might actually help her, I've seen other videos of her she's a prodigy
No wayyy
STRAIGHT UP BAD ASS MY FRIEND!
Here I am in 2021, amazed &!delighted by this incredible musician - such a joy to behold the magic language of music.
She blind with three keyboards is more accurate than me with two eyes and a single keyboard💀
Her talent is insane. Tarkus is the hardest and complicated song I ever heard.
Keith Emerson was privileged to have Rachel Flowers play his Moog. A tribute to Bob Moog too!
IT IS TRUE.
I don't know if he was already dead or not. I don't see him anywhere there...any ghost....
He was not dead at the time he loaned her the Modular Moog. He was friends with Rachel and very impressed by her. I was in attendance when she played at his Memorial Concert at the El Rey. She was amazing and fit right in with the keyboard legends who paid tribute to this generation's Liszt.
Keith Emerson is right now looking down from prog rock heaven ,Watching this and smiling from ear to ear.
I'm pretty sure he was still alive when this happened
@@mattekudasai8249 He was... and he actually surprised Rachel with a phone call!
This Tarkus transmits so much love and enthusiasm for music that I can only say thank you Keith, thank you Rachel, you make the world a better place.
Yes. I was telling my cousin about Rachel this very day, and said the same thing.
Modern composer
How can she play this way being blind ? Thats incredible, a pure music talent that deserve all our admiration.
Wonderful. There is still a musician in the world who understands Emerson's music! The interpretation is brilliant!
Wow, now that's a gift from God, I could see Keith watch her play and be speechless, just unbelievable. It goes to show just what a genius Keith Emerson was. RIP Keith and fantastic playing Rachel, Keith would be so proud.
This is exactly the kind of people who make me still believe in mankind. A True Prodigy.
she maybe came from the same galaxy and planet of keith
Rachel is a greatly gifted musician.
And Jeanie, you are a great mom.
Keith's passing brought me to here, Keith will live on in you Rachel. And for any doubters of Mr Emereson's talent...well..
if you can play emerson lake and palmer,,you can play anything!!!
You should hear her play the guitar solo on Montana. Zappa would be smiling too.
She can play anything and on any instrument. She's a musical genius.
She's a competent flautist too!
So not true. I can... and can't. That truth does not detract from how killer she is.
Such sad news today, I only just heard about Keith's passing. One of my favorite musicians ever. RIP.
Brilliant playing. I am awestruck: you must be so proud, mum.
RIP Keith, a legend. Misunderstood by many, but not by his true fans. We are privileged to have had him in our lives
Just look the right tone is very hard....i think Keith Emerson are proud of you...with this amazing music he live forever.
I am a huge EL&P fan, they're by far my favorite band and every time Rachel gets EL&P on the mind she BLASTS it out of the park. The smile this raises on her face is a delight to see. She loves this music and it shows.

I'm back for my periodic Tarkus fix...Thank you, Rachel!
I rarely comment on RUclips videos but honestly what a superb musician you are. Absolutely awesome :)

Who the hell would thumbs down this?? She's fantastic!!!!
When you don't like ELP. _I_ can not imagine that as well, but there are millions of people listening to music, which I do not understand ;-)
Bob Harris perhaps
I guess, people who are not familiar with RUclips disliked ads or Just Hit the wrong Button.

I'm sorry for the lost of Mr. Emerson in such tragic ways, but you are a guardian of his legacy, and a musician who can push it beyond. It will be an immense honnor to follow you through your career and I think that anybody can expect the wonders of what you will play and compose. Your fan, JS.
Bravo, Rachel! Sadly, we'll never see ELP perform again, but who knows? Maybe we'll see FLP!

Her joy of this music erupts in her smile. She is incredibly talented.
Wonderful musician.
If one tries hard enuff and loves what they are doing then anything is possible. God Bless You Rachel.
That's some real amazing playing!
My mind was twisted watching this excellent performance.
One of the coolest things I have ever seen on the net ,what an amazing ear and talent!!!
She learned this by ear? That's incredible! I've listened to this piece for 0ver 30 ears and know it by heart, but only in my head. When I closed my eyes I could swear it was Keith Emerson playing solo. Rachel, you're AMAZING and thanks for keeping Tarkus alive!
AMAZING , DEAR RACHEL !!!!....
Nem lát....
Nailed it completely with flying colours, and with such age. Simply astonished!
wow, Rachel you are amazing. what serious talent. Thank you for sharing your love of ELP. This really made me smile. :)
My jaw is bouncing off the ground. This isn't just a note perfect cover but an absolute expression of joy. Wow. Rachel is up there with the Keyboard Gods - well, Goddesses too now she has come along. Genuinely up there in some very exalted company.
Wonderful, I'm so pleased that this has been shared.
Some viewers may not realize that Rachel is blind, which makes her performances all the more incredible. Simply amazing and a joy to watch.
Beyond amazing. I can't imagine any music that would be more difficult to learn. Incredibly well done.
Have a listen to Ligeti's Études. These were composed for the French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, who had a reputation for being able to play anything set in front of him. The composer set out to defeat this prodigious talent, who did eventually master them.

Some of Messiaen's works for piano and organ sound fiendishly difficult too. 😎
Incredible! What an amazing performance! Somewhere, up in Heaven, Keith Emerson is smiling.
Wow! Never thought I'd ever see an equal to Keith Emerson, but she's there.
She does incredible ELP covers. I can't find any, but I would love to see what she could compose on her own!
Never mind. Google Rachel Flowers.
Calvin Aldrich I hope she makes it to Houston Zappa show Sunday!

Thank you Rachel for making my world better. Going thru a lot right now and when I found your videos you put a smile on my face and made my day. Your are an incredible person and musician. I thank God for people like you!
I wish I were so talented ... at anything! And some complain about having to wear glasses! Sheeese!
Words fail me. This is the most magnificent performance I have ever seen. I just am floored.
Fantastic!!.. found this via Rubén Valtierra. Tarkus is a lifelong favourite of mine and Rachel's version is truly remarkable
Flowers. Bravo!
As an amateur pianist and a prog lover, this is pure gold, it always leaves me speechless.
Awesomesause Rachel! I LOVE all your music!
Thank you so much for carrying the torch onward into the future.
👋🤓💯
Thank you Jeanie for this awesome post! Great album! Rachel killed it! I love it!
Absolutely magnificent. Keith would be very proud.
