Career advice is so focused on “doing what you love,” and yet, most of us end up hating our jobs. This video explores why after going through years of school, having access to career services, and getting work advice from the people around us, most of us will end up in careers we don’t like. I get to make my success comment ! I went from 53k a year and realized I was underpaid. I had only been there for 9 months. However, I kept interviewing and not only did I (finally) land a job that had half of the commute I had, but I got offered… 20,500 MORE!! Watching your videos made me realize life is too short to settle for a mediocre job! Job hopping doesn’t have to be bad when there’s a company that will appreciate you!

I landed my second job offer in a year and I give literally every bit of the credit to your videos. I recommend you to everyone I know who’s looking for a job, you do SUCH important and helpful work. Thank you!! I pivoted from opera to AI project management (talk about a shift 😂) and I can’t believe how much I enjoy the work. Now I channel my singing into side projects and let a tech role I really enjoy pay the bills. Maybe music will become my full time gig again someday, who knows? But in the meantime, I’m so glad I pivoted. I’m much happier now - good luck to those of you looking for your next step! It’s may be a jungle gym, but at least those are way more fun than ladders!

I am in the healthcare field and became completely disillusioned after graduation into the real world. Many of my peers are leaving this industry in droves despite investing significant study time & college costs because it looks nothing like what we were prepared for in 4 yrs of school.
There are now many regulatory demands that are transforming the landscape & making it very difficult, if not impossible, to focus on the patient care aspects that attracted us to the profession in the first place.
I'm seeing many turn away from healthcare altogether with a desperate need for alternatives. I recently ran into a cashier @ the grocery store who is an R.N. who says she didn't want to leave but is much happier now.

    • @SelfMadeMillennial

Yes the regulatory demands are brutal! People just want to help people and then get into the job and are demoralized

I'm not in healthcare (not counting a bit of medical device engineering) but I personally know or indirectly know of several people with the same general story. Pre-med, but escaped in the nick of time. One had a friend two or three years ahead who saw what went on in the emergency rooms of LA, and changed path.
Some aiming for pre-med, put off by the long courses of study and relative lack of a life outside career, don't get as far as disillusionment while in the field. Others have kids early on, in military service or in first year college, and unless it's a wealthy family, medical school goes out the window. Those are acts of divine grace, because in all cases, once the would-be medical careerist sees what doctors and nurses put up with in real life, they are happy they took another path.

I'm an HR professional and there are aspects I absolutely love, the bosses I've had are the issue. I started to question whether I want to stay in the field. I love helping and supporting others but usually the salaries for those jobs are extremely low. I really need help because in the past two years, I've been job hopping. I don't feel fulfilled or accomplished.

To know it's not just me and there's so many other people like me is this is the first time I've ever heard orconsidered that. Absolutely mind blowing. My college didn't even have the a career center or career counselor. I was a teacher and have 7 years of college in that and I just can't do it anymore I will not go back flopped around like a fish out of water barely surviving since nobody wants to hire me I don't know where to look for jobs where to begin what to do. Hearing this video gives me a glimmer of hope that I desperately needed

I majored in physics because I was intensely curious about fuzzy wavefunctions, electrons being in two places at once, warped spacetime, and all that. But after grad school, I've made most of my money in software development, because, as a famous bank robber once said, that's where the money is.
Unfortunately I'm not very good at software development. So I got into 3D digital art and animation. Unfortunately I'm not very good at sales, promotion, or earning money with stock image sales.
So now my only remaining strategy: marry a rich girl! How do I do that? ??? Hmm, no success with that either.
Okay then, back to SW development...

A lot of factors played a role in me choosing jobs. I use to work in sales and got let go from my sales job in tech. I was beginning to realize that sales wasn’t for me because I wasn’t effective at it. I was able to start a job as a buyer and loved it. Stayed with the company I am currently in to gain some experience in buying (procurement) to be exact. Now that I gained the skills and really look at what the pay range is in my area for that skill set, I’m looking to my next role.

I got into the IS/IT field in the 2000s, but I got stuck in software testing for 15 years. Got out in 2017. Now back to not having a career. Trying to get back in as a data engineer in my 60s. Hopefully this worls for me.

No way did I want to become a professor, after seeing how much time they spent on management, administration, school politics. Doing practical work and solving tricky problems in science and engineering and digital media, with visible results the public enjoys, is so much more satisfying!

Mam a lot of job postings in my field of AEC construction hvac design industry are asking for/opting for 1 or 2 years of experienced candidates which makes me as a fresher candidate with 6 months of internship knowledge difficult to get hired what could be the solution for this as some of the people are creating fake experience certificate in such cases & getting hired ! It's working for most of them so what needs to be done to be seen as a worthy candidate despite of such shortcomings.. can specialized knowledge in one subject makes us more desirable than others to cut the competition or any other factors ??

I've lost hope in ever being able to get a full-time job in a field I enjoy. The problem is there are only a few fields that pay entry-level living wages in a economy with there are next to no entry-level jobs. My problem is have been fired 13 times due to being late for hating my jobs, being paid poorly, and have no opportunities to apply my skills that I excel at. So many people with good work records are working jobs I would excel at, which sucks and isn't fair. Ive made it several times to the final round of interviews but was rejected because of my past terminations several years back. That's why, no employer will hire me because of jobs I held 4-6 years. Combine this problem with having Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), I have an empty job inbox with no end in sight. I wish "Right to Work" laws were illegal, workers need protection against being terminated for any reason, and we need all corporate executives to be fired so companies start allowing people to stay at companies for several years, offer employment contracts to employees, pay living wages, and treat employees like human beings.

Can you tell the rest of the HR industry in the USA that bit about short tenures in tech roles? I'm a sr. cybersecurity\compliance expert and I've been blown away at how many HR staff are completely unaware that cybersecurity staff and leaders are currently averaging ~20 months with a company.

That's one reason I like dealing with recruiters who were previously in engineering, science, technical creatives, film/tv, and keep their names in my "digital rolodex" to stay in touch while I forget, usually, all the recruiters whose backgrounds are in sales, marketing, management, finance and that kind of stuff. The latter type worry too much about length of jobs, "gaps" and wanting to see a straight line "career progression". I laugh at them (not really, just in imagination) and gracefully (?) terminate the application process for that job.

College is a time to learn about the world and develop who we are as humans - it's not a waste or mistake to major in something we didn't end up working in.

    • @Thechanterramarie
      @Thechanterramarie 10 месяцев назад +6

I don’t think she’s saying that, but also, I think there are far more sustainable ways to learn about the world and yourself than going to college. But if you’re made to believe that college is the only way then that’s an issue. I know so many people that were pressured into going to college when they didn’t even want to.

@@Thechanterramarie How can you not want to go to place where you can take any classes you're curious about, join organizations, meet people from all over ? It is absolutely the best way to figure out who you are and what you want from life.

@@anonanonymous1970 because I’d rather save my money and learn things in more cost effective or free ways so that I can start my career and then do the things I love in my spare time. Getting into my career afforded me the opportunity to travel and meet different people, learn new skills, and start a side hustle. All without committing myself to college for 4+ years. I get it if there’s a career where it’s mandatory for you to attend college but many careers these days don’t require college.
Everything you described that college offers, can be done for free:
      - I don’t have to attend college to try different classes I’m interested in.
      - I don’t have to attend college to join an organization.
      - And I certainly don’t have to attend college to meet new people.
So again, if that’s why you love college that’s great, but other people would rather do all those things you listed without taking out loans and collecting student debt.
I’m not taking away from your experience, but what I am saying is that it’s kind of weird that you can’t acknowledge that there are options outside of college that work just as well, which is why a lot of people feel like college is a waste of time.
There are free and affordable programs available that make learning accessible to everyone. Something that college can’t compare to.
Every city in the world has free organizations for you to join.
There are so many ways to meet new people and explore new cultures for free.
So really, what advantage does college have in comparison? It doesn’t. End of story.
