Perfect idea! I have the same problem, drywall dust. My shop vac has a top inlet, so I found a piece of plastic tube that fits in the inlet, cut it long enough to submerge the end and it's fantastic.
Purchased a second hand wet/dry vacuum for £20 and made one exactly the same as yours (after hours of cleaning with a standard vac with hepa-filter bags which proved to be both expensive and to clog up quickly) - Your vac design works perfectly and has saved me a lot of time and money and works far better than anything else i have tried !
Thank you, i been thinking about building something like this but wasn't sure how to go about the foaming problem and also the other issue of the large baubles allowing for dust particles to still make their way through the water and bust my vacuum motor. Ill definitely give this a try. I think you pretty much covered it all and your motor unit still looks clean and free from plaster which is great. Thanks again.
Brilliant! I too was considering something like this to clean out my fireplace ashes. Very nice work! Note to self: Fly Wire = Window Screen :-D Thanks for the video!!!
Thanks for creating this video. I need to suck up some drywall dust and had the idea of using a water filter. Previously I put a wet rag on the exhaust of my vacuum, which worked ok, but I have to have someone hold the rag since there's no other way to make it stay on. I haven't tried making the water filter yet but now see I would have had foam issues. I have a bucket head vac, but alternatively I may add a lid and make a vacuum port for a regular shop vac.
Brilliant! I thought this type of thing would be useful for a project I'm working on, so I searched YT and found this video. I was thinking about using the shop vac bucket as-is, but running a hose from the inside intake port to the bucket bottom. Good to know about the fiberglass matting to reduce bubbles, and vinegar to reduce foam. Thanks!
Thanks For the great idea. I put the screen in the tub. Works great. Used with a dry wall sander that sucked the dust away while I sanded. Dust free keeps the wife happy
You just made me realize I can use the excess solar power I can't put in to my battery to run a vac that can clean my air. I wonder if you can use this system on a large scale...
your design has 2 brilliant ideas. 1. adding a split lid inside to keep the water at the bottom of the bucket. 2. use soap to create foam to improve the dust / water mix. however, your inlet design with tight elbow, and goes straight with drilled holes will dramatically reduce the airflow. I suggest you to change the design similar to the cyclone to force the dust and water spin and mix inside the bucket.
Hi Eric I am engineering challanged are you telling me that if I had a dust collector attached to my shop vac its abilty to collect dust will be enhance if I use soap water thoughts please thank you!
tight 90 degree elbow and small holes kills the air flow. replace that elbow with a long hose and entering the bucket on sideway, like a cyclone dust collector, to increase the airflow. also don't just drill the holes in the tube inside the bucket to let the air comes out. replacing it with a bigger 45 degree elbow. every single part that block the air should be replaced. but all in all, using the water to wash is a good idea to remove the fine dust.
HI Eric it seems you understand the idea of of using soap to trap dust but elsewhere on the interent it is stated that some people are afraid that dish soap might make bubbles to big that person said they felt a defoamer would like be a better option so I today went and bought a laundry deteregent it seems bubbles in that will be small does that sound good to you thoughts please thank you! again my question in case I was unclear do you think laundry detergent is a good soap to use in my water trap dust collector thoughts please thank you! I would guess one cap full should be enough if not more than enough ? thoughts please thank you
My idea is to put the inlet hose at the side to make the air spin against the wall of your bucket. The spinning air will also move the water spinning at the same time. The physics of the spinning action will make the dust and water mixed together. The clean air, or finest of the finest dust, will exit from the outlet. Yes, adding the detergent will create bubbles but it will also increase the efficiency of the cleaning action, which is the best part of your system. The amount of detergent is a try and error process.
Hi Eric I am not sure which system you are refering to but I made a cyclone diy dust collector based on youtube videos to good news it would seems is it is designed I think as a water trap style and I just bought some laundry deteregent so hopefully if I put a capful in the bottom of my cyclone dust collector it will hopefully wrk well in traping dust do you think Ideas please thank you
That works pretty dang good! I did something similar with a shop vac pulling through a second bucket. But yours is better as its one unit. One question though. Who's Bob and how'd we get related?
can you imagine the customer walks in and sees that mess on the carpet. He'd say hey you dummy put down a tarp who the hell wants that crap in the carpet. OMG I have textured for over 40 years every time a tapers calls me out I have clean this crap up before I can mask off. Heres an idea mask off first.
PJgearhead ok customers should never tell the tapers they are replacing the carpet. Imagine the carpet guy comes and takes the old carpet away and gets a face full of dust that worked its way down in. tisk tisk tisk
PJgearhead ohhhhhh sorry, a taper is the trade name for someone who takes the drywall (after its on the walls) and tapes the joints, then finishes them and then textures them. as I have done for the last 40 years. In your own house do as you please. of course.

Works great bud, thanks. I use mine for super fine media blasting. I've always had major dust issues, this solves it.

Sweet setup!
Nice. I'm thinking about making a respirator using a water bottle for filtration. Now I'm aware of a few potential issues I may encounter.
Thanks. :)
Looks fantastic! Have you tested the outlet air for fine particles? It should have been tested whith a particle counter.
Отлична идея именно с размещением трубы вниз отверстиями, но для разной строительной грязи перед данным фильтром нужно ставить циклон
Didn't even need to watch more than 5 secs to like this video!
I gotta make one of these!
Pretty good

its a bong man.. straight up awesome
5/5 cleans well and smokes well after
I’ve been thinking about something like this for metal grinding dust which can be flammable.
Lol @ the name!
The "Bong-VAc" TM
"fly wire" What? What hell is fly wire? ohhhh. You mean window/porch screen. LOL
man... thank you!!!!!!!!! so much!!!

have you heard of a rainbow vacuum? and great idea
good idea
A bit of Ocker-genuity there mate.
4:15 "son of a..." lmao!
My Aquavac stopped working when I picked up dust from grout removal. Any suggestions how to fix
Get a new one
Too much water. Add a perc 😉
Oh you do have a perc!

Carpet was being replaced so didn't bother protecting it.

Not quite sure what a tapers is, but it was my house and I did all the work.
