Sadly its been happening for centuries. millions of people have been complaining, but no one listened. Its the MAIN reason why jail houses and Prison
prohibit cameras and cell phones. The government doesn't want the public or media know what is really going on behind closed doors.
Of course the city officials are going to say ts an isolated issue.... Its a media line. Once the heat is off from the media, it will go back to normal feeding ppl horrible food again.
You will be surprised at the horrifying foods they get fed. Its REALLY REALLY bad. This video is just the tip of the iceberg....
Many inmates always tell people, "You don't want to go to prison" Its a really bad dark and horrible place.

Anyway, what we were served was barely edible. But people serving years got to get commissary. We didn't even have the option. Sometimes guys would have to switch pods with no notice. Then all their food/belongings were stolen. Don't go to jail. They do not care if you live or die. And the means to take care of yourself. You can die easily.

I still have an automatic no contact order from the court and she tries calling and texting that she’s sorry and stuff but I don’t answer her at all cause I can’t. Went to court a few days ago and they still haven’t pressed charges so it’s still over my head without any evidence or a statement from my ex cause she started becoming lucid when the cops came. To me it depends on what they're in there for. If you're in there for rape, domestic abuse or theft etc I have no sympathy. If you're in there for an unpaid ticket then I think u deserve a decent meal. I will say, if u have anything u owe u need to pay it asap because if u don't they will lock u up and u will be forced to eat slop. Don't believe ppl on RUclips who claim jail dinners and nutraloaf are good, because I know COs who say that inmates often find dirt, rocks and bugs in their tray. So to us, turkey noodles might not sound "so bad" but they literally find pebbles and bugs in their food. Nest thing is to do right so u don't end up in there because they can serve u whatever they want. Also alot of the time that food has been sitting along time and is spoiled. I'm glad I encouraged my male relatives to do right so they won't end up in there. Don't listen to what some RUclipsrs say, jail is not a pretty place and no the lunches aren't "just like school lunches" there's all types of stuff found in the food. Just don't go and don't hype it up like it's a cool experience, it's a horrible place to go and all this crying about the food is pointless because jails/prison makes their own rules. Just stay away

Allegheny County Jail has ALWAYS had less than adequate food. Now, I dont think jail food needs to be gourmet...but it should be sufficient, people should not be given sub-standard food and no one should go hungry.
I know for a fact that cutting quarterly costs is priority when outside contractors run co kitchens, whether its a jail, hospital, airport or a summer camp.
I think its important to remember that according to our system that the majority people in county jail are awaiting trial or the outcome of their case and are not yet proven to be guilty. That said we are treating people presumed to be innocent in this manner...while people found guilty and serving state time would NEVER be fed like this.

So in my personal opinion (and even as someone who has been a victim of a crime by a stranger attack [B&E, sexual assault, threatened with deadly weapon, stolen from]), I STRONGLY feel like prisons across the world have an opportunity to reduce crime, recidivism, and prison fights and they are squandering it with abysmal sub-standard food.
Serving time should not be about punishment because in the long run it helps no one and it's expensive and dangerous for everyone. I don't even want my attacker to be "punished", I want him to GET WELL so that he becomes an integrated member of society where he feels safe and nourished and no longer has a need to break in, threaten, rape and steal from other women. So that because society has helped him, he wants to contribute to society instead of take from it. I could tell my attacker was high out of his mind and impoverished and I would bet my life on the fact that man was severely deficient in certain crucial vitamins and nutrients that may very well have contributed to his need to commit crime. Because being chronically malnourished and pushed aside by society could make a lot of otherwise sane people become quite deranged.
Those serving time should eat healthy, fresh, whole, balanced meals.
Those serving time should get their blood levels checked 4 times a year to check for and monitor and correct any nutritional deficiencies.
Those serving time should should all be assigned to meet with a Nutritional Psychiatrist once a week to be prescribed the individualized vitamin supplements that each specific inmate needs that their body isn't absorbing enough of from the healthy, whole, nutrient rich, balanced diet they are consuming because the Nutritional Psychiatrist will factor in the inmate's individual genetic predispositions to develope certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies that another inmate does not struggle with due to their different genetic makeup and their different absorption rate, factoring in the inmate's family history, height, weight, gender, etc. As these all factor into to how much each person needs of each supplement to make up for what diet alone can not provide due to soil depletion worldwide due to modern farming practices.
Most adults need 100-600 mg of Magnesium in the forms of Magnesium L-Threonate, Magnesium Malate, and Magnesium Glycinate
    Most adults need 2,000-10,000 IU's D3
Most adults need 5-10 mcg vitamin B12
Most adults need 30-40 mg of Zinc
Most adults need 500-1,000 mg of Omega 3 combined EPA and DHA
Most adults need 150 mcg Iodine
And the general population and children in the public and private school systems and those in psychiatric hospitals aren't even getting all of that most of the time either. So it's no wonder. Prescribing supplements and doing annual routine blood tests is a lot less expensive and more affordable than making deals with the devil with the pharmaceutical industry. We've got our priorities wrong.
We are creating miserable, depressed, malnourished, mentally unwell citizens and then locking them up, drugging them, nutritionally starving them, and throwing away the key. This has to change.

Food waste in jails around the country is unimaginable, about 95% of the food is thrown out due to its revolting quality and the amount of styrofoam thrown out is a nationwide pollution concern. If jails made an effort to make even semi-palatable food the waste would decrease dramatically and would ultimately be worth the increased cost of each meal. So really all that means is it’d probably go from 25 cents to 50 cents per meal.

I am very pro police and law enforcement and believe there are plenty of terrible humans in jail. But they still deserve at least DECENT food. Not Surf n Turf nor Old Country Buffet... but even a decent sandwich, salad, fruit, basic nutrition and decent food. Shameful really. I would think that the better inmates are fed, the less problematic conduct and issues they'd have. Tons of jails are relying on copious amounts of Margarine to meet guidelines... you need specific amount of calories, carbohydrates, and lack of bad fats and cholesterol? Their main "side" is 3 slices of white bread 3 times a day with several Tbsp margarine. Much cheaper than say pasta with tomato sauce and a dinner roll with butter packet. Soy for meat mixing. Smaller portions of any vegetable and the meats might be one cheap junk hot dog wrapped in a slice of bread. I dont think they should be feasting but food is the 3rd most important necessity to human existence after oxygen and water. There has to be a way to feed them both fairly and adequately without budget issues.

Cheap bologna with apple sauce smeared on it and a package of Graham crackers of some sort.... Wow. That's pretty bad. They should at least be able to get some basic bologna sandwiches and an apple, possibly a smattering of green beans. I mean, that's not much, but it's inexpensive and easy to prepare. It would at least give them something to eat that at least pretends to have nutritional value.

This “punishment” is part of the reason why people stay in jail. They don’t learn anything from these prisons and don’t walk out a better person. I wish people would advocate for prison to be a form of rehabilitation instead of a punishment. Because the mentality of this being a form of punishment, and putting people in dehumanizing conditions, only creates a revolving door, or a cycle, that benefits no one. And to use this as an example of why you should stay in school, does not work on our youth, or have nearly as much impact as you might think it does.
