Cheers Colin, very much appreciated! :) I love the Voldus miniature. I painted him up for a step by step on our blog! Not sure how I did his hammer though! 🤣🤣
I just Got my hands on some old Space Marine Captains with power swords from years ago, and I'll DEFINITELY paint their swords this way. Beautiful paint job yet again, and truly inspiring :-D
@@BrushandBoltgun They were given to me free by a nice man on Ebay, when he sent me some old Terminators from the same set. The Captains have the sword in their right hands, pointing forwards, a crafted bolter in their left hands, and a nice cloak to finish things off :-) They were part of a special game scenario set from years ago, but my memory fails me when I try and remember the name of the game/scenario. I have three of these guys ready to paint now, and they are going to lead my new scout company, my 2nd company and maybe even my 4th company of the Hel's Angels home brew chapter I created. Lots of lovely bronze with red trim, and a funky power blade each :-D
Sweet! Got to be happy with that! Nice for folk to spread the love through ebay! Always a pleasant surprise when that happens. Like getting sweets with a miniature order! :-)
@@BrushandBoltgun Finally found out which game set they came from. It's "Assault On Black Reach" from way back in the days when you got your moneys worth from GW :-> Had to look that up on Google, as my memory is not as good as it used to be. Getting sweeties with miniatures is a standard practice with Hasselfree Miniatures I've found. Every time I order something from them, I get a few sweeties thrown in by Kev or one of their other order pickers :-D Always makes me smile :-)
Ahh! AoB! I had a break from 40k that resumed in about 2008 and that was the first box I got when I got back into it. It was the start of a ridiculous Ork army that I've still not finished painting... /facepalm haha :)
Cheers Man, very much appreciated! :) If anyone wants to see some spectacular painting, head over and give Opponenttheory a look on here and Instagram. Incredible brush skills! :)
Very cool effect ... thanks for sharing! I'm going to use it on my kitbashed bladeguard. Though I don't have nuln oil gloss... may nuln oil plus ardcoat will work?
Cheers Adrian, very much appreciated! :) Yeah, Nuln Oil then Ardcoat would work fine, it’s mainly just to make the energy field stand out so there’d be no harm in using those. :)
Looks great. Would be nice to get some info on how you mix the paint. Is it on a wet pallet, how much of the white are you adding each layer, what are the ratios?
This was really nice tutorial. The nuln oil thing especially. I'd personally substitute the white paint for white ink though. Less chance of chalky look and it also thins the paint.
Cheers Jaani, very much appreciated, and great tips as always! I love the sound of the forge hot one, been debating something similar since I did Guilliman years ago! :)
The Brush & Boltgun Well, my box arrived just now. From Italy. About to go soak in a tub of sanitizer. Couldn't give the mailing box to my cat to play with. If anyone still wants a box you might want to check the Central European Amazons. Last week there were 6 English versions left. Since most of the content gets localised for FIGS nations the English versions do not sell that great. Been a while since I've built kits, so I gets to travel the back in time. Originally was going to prime with gesso, but I think that that might be a bit too thick with so flimsy parts. So, grey primer it is and white drybrush zenithal and such.
The Brush & Boltgun They are pretty. I love the skeleton shield and the banner. All those beautiful relics. I've been studying burnt and calcified bones for painting. I used to work in video game industry and one of my responsibilities were localisations. The Central European countries are very much about their languages and most of their media, TV and movies, is dubbed. The ones that do speak English are proud of it, but because they aren't that plenty the rarer UK/US media is easier to find there if the run has ended. Also they do a lot of special editions. Caprica's BD was out in France something like 2 or 3 years before it came out elsewhere in the world. It also included the original soundtrack.
Hello, what detail brush do you use exactly ? (i'm using layer S mostly but i think it won't be enough for that one) and thanks again for the great tutorials. I realy apreciate that you show us the whole process. Love from France. Ps : il allready have Calgar blue, and don't wana buy another blue for so few painting. Do you think that will make it ? Do i have to mix it whith a bit of white ?
Cheers Nicolas, very much appreciated! :) I'm glad you like the tutorials, hoping that they help a lot of people to pick up small techniques which look very difficult, but can be done fairly easy. :) If it's a new S Layer brush you should be fine but if the tip has started going it may be more difficult. :) I use Citadel Medium and Small Layer brushes, Army Painter Wargamer: Character brushes, and I've just started using an Army Painter Insane Detail brush. They're cheap, but they all hold a point and have never let me down. :)
@@BrushandBoltgun oh nice. My local shop is doing army painter too. So i'm gona try to get their detail brush then. And yes the tip of my s layer is a bit tired (still descent but not thin as at first) after 60 miniatures (i have donne the full indomitus and dark imperium and few more space marine sets in ultra marines) . They're battle ready, i'm going for table top now (6 minis done, and it takes me 2h per mini to get from battle ready to table top), and i must reform the tip every 3 uses for highlights. It's so not fun. ^^ I think i overused it on the basic (hard to get) details of the 60 minis. Or maybe it's normal after so much painting. I think i realy have to buy a "only thin detail" brush and don't overuse it for something else. But still they're so many. Is their a way to realy take care of the tip during and after the use ? I may miss something ... And yes realy, you helped me a lot getting back in painting hobby and leting me think i could do wonders. I'm a bit too much into it right now, but realy proud of the final results. Wife is starting to complain about not seing me anymore. I'll just say it's your fault. Your tutorials are too good. ^^ But it's so cool to have that artistic passion in my life again, after 30 years. I know it's strange but it makes me feel good and at peace. Keep on the good work. Your choices of tutorials are just perfect for me.
Hahaha! I din't do nuffink yer 'onour! :) Ah, cheers, that's really good to know. :) I think it's worth having specific brushes for specific things. I have an old Medium layer brush that is about 5mm shorter than it should, and with no point which is used for shades, dry brushing, etc. Small Layer Brush with point for details, Small Layer brush without point for shades and basecoats in small areas, etc. They all have their place, even when they're ancient. :)
Nice tutorial, definitely going to try something similar on my indomitus blades. Can't help but notice you seem to prime on the sprue? What's your experience been like doing it this way? I mess around with blue tack and toothpicks a lot and it's starting to bug me (not to mention doing bikes this way is nightmare fuel) - considering doing it on the sprue to save some effort! Either way, subbed, good job!
Cheers archfrank, very much appreciated! :) To be honest I find it the easiest way to prime them and have primed on the sprue for years. I usually prime them when they arrive, then if I'm not building them straight away they're always ready to go when I want to - Nothing worse than wanting to spray and the weather outside is hideous! :-) The only downside is that you'll have scrapes when you take off the mould lines or bits where the pieces join the sprue that don't have primer on them when you come to paint, but they're easily covered. :)
This is my favorite lightning sword style. looks so good

Would Hoeth Blue or Thousand Sons Blue be a serviceable substitute for the Ahriman Blue?
Hey there A F, thanks for watching. Pretty sure Thousand Sons Blue would be fine as it’s a pretty close match! :)
ill try this on a stormcast!
