Not a bad idea man, you could absolutely just do a light-dark version (perhaps with one 'reflective' line down one side *or* a varnish to make it catch light?
Great video as always. I tried your drybrushing technique for space marine armour today for the first time using the artis opus dry brush and really amazed with the results. Definitely a game changer in my painting.

Haaa, the wheel may have to come out some time soon, the video didn't go down hugely well, maybe we just need to have 50k subs or something to give it a better first few days! It really is a great tip, all about cocking up somewhere that isn't my model! :D
You have the best tutorials. Thank you so much for producing these. If you ever do another color powersword my color vote is Purple (Emperors Children).
@@ArtisOpus You might just be able to do a video showcasing the finished product and run all the painting bits at 2x speed. Just referencing this video for technique.
I would love to see a striking method for painting regular eldar armor (guardians, banshees, dire avenger etc etc.) to give an eldar army a nice cohesive look for regual models but also aspect warriors and elites
@@ArtisOpus I started painting again after 15 years of "hobbybreak". :-) I use your painting method from the salamanders video (stippling / drybrushing) and after that i wash the lower parts of the armour with a black wash mixed with the inital colour, looks awesome for my noob skills tho. I paint them in a dark blue color scheme beacuse they are going to be a Sky Raiders Pirates team.
Unfortunately at this stage, the discussion would at least has to start with the word drybrushing before you tell people that their brushes shouldn't actually be dry😂
Amazing result! I’ve struggled a little with glazing swords or axes mainly down to running out of patience. I’d love to see if you could use this technique to do a Molten core sword. It would fit in perfectly with my Salamnders, but I’m just not sure where to start.
Would love to see how you would paint horse flesh. Im staring a small death rider detachment and would like to to see a redish brown skin tone for the horses.
This looks ace! Just a shame that I only have one model with a power sword, and that's a skitarii tank commander leaning out the cupola, I have named him Wee Mad Arthur, the sword is purely for decoration, so might look a bit odd if I made it super eye catching
I am not a WH40k collector, so would like to see your take on some fantasy stuff. Chainmail in particular can look ok with base silver and a wash, but I can't seem to get it looking great.
That's a great suggestion! I've had this issue myself. Will definitely do a video at some point😊Until then try putting some hints of deep blue in your recesses and maybe even some dots of rust and very lightly drybrushing some extra shiny highlights😊
This is awesome and I'd love to see you do more effects with Series D. Like, do you think you could do heat bloom on a meltagun? Also, and this is a total side note, I'd love to see you do some really grimy models at some point, maybe even grimdark style but definitely something like orks would be really cool to see how you would tackle them - I think an ork boy would be much more challenging to do with series D than a space marine, and ork vehicles would probably just be really fun to do to be fair.
These are all brilliant suggestions.🤩Heat bloom is particularly interesting, I'll definitely give that some thought. I don't think it's possible but I thought that in the past about power swords. I've actually tried grimdark a couple of times and just end up painting exactly as I normally do by the end of the model😅I think what I need to do is 100% follow someone else's tutorial at least on the first attempt.
Wonder how well series D (which may I add is by a mile the best dry brush set out there, and I am currently awaiting my set) would get on with Roboute Girlymans latest model from geedubs....
@@ArtisOpus will find out soon enough I am going for an all round black, sombre armor for mr Girlyman....with dark metallic all the trimming....rekon this thing will do the job no sweat 😃👍
Useful tutorial as always! My series D & S sets arrived today, finally can crack on with some painting! It's been a little while so I hope I'm not too rusty... Also, I was wondering if you had any idea how to create a pearl effect? I'm going to be painting some elven staffs and I thought the ivory/pinky/satin-y colour would be perfect, but I'm not sure where to start. Any tips would be much appreciated. :)
Awesome dude, thanks so much for your support! Great question, it's not one that I know how to answer unfortunately, it's definitely quite tricky. Perhaps check out Cult of Paint... Andy has just started Lumineth and he's an incredibly talented painter. Don't worry about being rusty, it comes back pretty fast😊
Do you think it could be possible to show us how to deal with large vehicles such as Bikes or Speeders with this same technique ? As I have just received my Serie D brushes, I'm at the edge of starting my Ravenwing Army and I'm not sure witch technique I should use. Dont want them to be just Black spray painted with a little edge high-lightening, as most of the people do, I want a little more volume on my black parts, coud it be on the bike/speeder as on the biker/pilot. Thanks for the tips :)
You're so welcome! Check out some of our earlier vehicles tutorials, they should be absolutely perfect. We've not done vehicles for a while so we should be returning on them sometime soon on the channel😊
@@ArtisOpus Thanks for the answer, I have viewed most of your videos, but painting black is one of the most complicated color on vehicles, as you can easily ruin the model with the highlights. Not even talking about how do you shade black without it looking either to grey or not shaded at all... If ever you are planning to do a video in near futur about black color, this could be a perfect example, as many armies tend to use the full black color scheme.
I like the effect and I would like to try it, but do you have a technique for making it look like an energized steel blade? As if you can tell its glowing with energy but still looks like a metal sword underneath? I picked up aethermatic blue contrast to try that on a steel color, but do you have tips to help create those glowing areas without being too jarring on a steel color?
One of my fav ways to achieve this is with a careful drybrush of white on the surrounding area, followed by a subtle glaze. You can then gently drybrush highlight closer areas to the source with a highlight colour 😊
@@ArtisOpus so similar technique for the spots, just start from steel with white and then use that aethermatic glaze? I was thinking a little darker blue glaze in the non-energized sections might help with a steel effect and get some nice contrast, but I want it to look light and subtle, I'll play around with some glazes after stippling some white sections. Thank you for the advice!
Steel variant? I'd approach like this with metallics if so, or just maybe a tiny touch of incubi in the base, otherwise black/white. I hope that helps? Let me know in another comment, YT is awful for conversation notifications, I miss a lot of replies to replies.
Stunning results, i will try this out tomorrow! One question: Maybe its just for the video, but would you really prefer to do this before painting the rest of the miniature? i feel like it would be a good last step for the miniature to paint the sword, because you can't bring back the color that easy
Scale 75 is kind of hard to get a hold of around here, what citadel/vallejo/army painter/other I may be forgetting would you replace it with if you had to (for the stippling part, not the glazing)
Until Byron/AO gives an answer. Don't know where you're based, but Warcolours is gelbased just as the S75 colours. Also, I believe that Kimera is that too? If you just mean a colour compatibility chart, then check out www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart
@@archfrank There is an app called paintRack that should be able to show alternatives to "any" paint. But that feature costs money to unlock, so no clue if it actually shows an alternative.
A really good alternative is to just drop a little bit of ink in with the closest blue that you have. Huldra's saturation is what makes it so cool. This kinda gets you that😊
I really like what you've done here and I definitely like the end result. I would like more explanation into what you're doing after the base layer. It looks like you're mixing white in with the Ahriman Blue, creating two sections of that with a space for darker in between. And then after that adding more white and putting that in the center of the two light spots you made. Maybe I am deaf or I just don't understand easily but It would be the helpful to me if there was more explanation in all the intricate details of what you're doing there. I've tried this, I just I'm kind of guessing what you're doing

@@ArtisOpus Yeah! Me too.
Just finished off the librarian as a test dummy, now to see if I can sexy up his axe (-:
the cardigan game is bloody strong!!
🤭🤭Maybe I need new ones to celebrate 2021, open for suggestions!
Great video +
Cheers, dude! Hope it works out well for you :)
"with edge highlighting one thing you can do is test it on the edge of your base"... You sir have blown my mind... It's a little thing but rest assured I'll be doing that on my next edge highlight job. Not gonna lie I saw the thumbnail and went "nah there's no way he did that with drybrushing". I tip my hat to you sir... in an unrelated note... What ever happened to the wheel of fortune? ;)
Haaa, the wheel may have to come out some time soon, the video didn't go down hugely well, maybe we just need to have 50k subs or something to give it a better first few days!
It really is a great tip, all about cocking up somewhere that isn't my model! :D
I always hate painting my bladed weapons. This is helpful and I would also like to see how you would do a metallic metal blade.
Thanks so much, dude! You're not the first to ask. Do you mean NMM or TMM?😊
@@ArtisOpus TMM
Can you do a video on how to paint a ghost axe for Aeldari wraithblades?
You have the best tutorials. Thank you so much for producing these. If you ever do another color powersword my color vote is Purple (Emperors Children).
Thanks a ton for the kind words, dude! I may well do a 'all the colours' power weapons tutorial in the future😊🤞
@@ArtisOpus You might just be able to do a video showcasing the finished product and run all the painting bits at 2x speed. Just referencing this video for technique.
Thanks for this video ! Just what tape did you use for protect the over side of the sword? Thank you !
1:22 - Tamiya :)
I would love to see a striking method for painting regular eldar armor (guardians, banshees, dire avenger etc etc.) to give an eldar army a nice cohesive look for regual models but also aspect warriors and elites
I love the Eldar aesthetic, they really are quite fiddly though. Now that I am a bit more practised I should stop dodging them however😊
@@ArtisOpus I started painting again after 15 years of "hobbybreak".
Just saying I would totally be up for you coining a name for the “damp brushing” technique to move it away from the “dry brush”
Unfortunately at this stage, the discussion would at least has to start with the word drybrushing before you tell people that their brushes shouldn't actually be dry😂
Moist brushing?
@@ArtisOpus 'Controlled dry brushing'
I saw somebody calling it "overbrushing"?
@@TheDarkplace I use that one.
Amazing result! I’ve struggled a little with glazing swords or axes mainly down to running out of patience. I’d love to see if you could use this technique to do a Molten core sword. It would fit in perfectly with my Salamnders, but I’m just not sure where to start.
Thanks, buddy! Great suggestion, I've never painted one myself, so we'd need to do some figuring out😊
Would love to see how you would paint horse flesh. Im staring a small death rider detachment and would like to to see a redish brown skin tone for the horses.
Good idea, dude, plenty of horses in plenty of fantasy words😊
EPIC. what blue base did you start with on the sword? Thanks!
Nice one Bilbo
Blending, there and back again... :) Our pleasure.
Hot damn that looks good.
Thanks, dude
This looks ace! Just a shame that I only have one model with a power sword, and that's a skitarii tank commander leaning out the cupola, I have named him Wee Mad Arthur, the sword is purely for decoration, so might look a bit odd if I made it super eye catching
"They can tak' oour lives, but they cannae tak' oour troousers!"
@@negotiableaffections 🤣🤣
Any excuse for a contrast is a good one😉I am sure your Wee man wouldn't mind getting some shiny treatment😊
Can I borrow your hands! That’s so crazy impressive!
😅 :)
Honestly it looks more troublesome than blending, I'll definitely try it to see if my hunch is right or I'll have to eat these words.
🤭🤭You'd better be hungry, prepare to be surprised!
If you're looking for suggestions, could you do a fur tutorial? Sooo many pelts.
We got it! 😉 ruclips.net/video/1x03dCZwKp0/видео.html
@@ArtisOpus LEGEND
Amazing!!! You are great
This is awesome and I'd love to see you do more effects with Series D.
The notsoDryBrush Wizard! :o
🤭🤭🧙♂️
Wonder how well series D (which may I add is by a mile the best dry brush set out there, and I am currently awaiting my set) would get on with Roboute Girlymans latest model from geedubs....
I wonder too😊He's a big boy!
@@ArtisOpus will find out soon enough I am going for an all round black, sombre armor for mr Girlyman....with dark metallic all the trimming....rekon this thing will do the job no sweat 😃👍
Nice work, I can't wait to try this.
Byron, are you trying to become a smurf?
How about a "stellar sword", where the gadient instead of going dark blue to white, goes dark red through orange to yellow to white to blue?
Cool idea, dude, quite tricky though😊I will have to up my game a bit before I get to that.
Amazing! Will you be doing a simliar tutorial from bright green (necron type0 power weapons? I desperately need one :/ :)
We got you ;)

Hey nice! There's more than one way to skin a cat! Thanks for making this video!
Our pleasure, dude, enjoy!
Do you have a technique for painting the heavenfall blades the dark angels hq uses
Steel variant? I'd approach like this with metallics if so, or just maybe a tiny touch of incubi in the base, otherwise black/white.
I hope that helps? Let me know in another comment, YT is awful for conversation notifications, I miss a lot of replies to replies.
Painting black/charcoal grey skin for the new Belakor model
He's a big boy! I'm excited to get my hands on him!😊
Stunning results, i will try this out tomorrow!
One question: Maybe its just for the video, but would you really prefer to do this before painting the rest of the miniature? i feel like it would be a good last step for the miniature to paint the sword, because you can't bring back the color that easy
So did you try it out?😊 Yea, I'd normally do it at the end.
hey there. what color is the base coati of the sword, and would Citadel's Sotek Green be a replacement for Huldra Blue?
Scale 75 is kind of hard to get a hold of around here, what citadel/vallejo/army painter/other I may be forgetting would you replace it with if you had to (for the stippling part, not the glazing)
Until Byron/AO gives an answer.
Don't know where you're based, but Warcolours is gelbased just as the S75 colours. Also, I believe that Kimera is that too?
If you just mean a colour compatibility chart, then check out www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart
@@Himle_ i knew about that chart but huldra blue does not show up on it. Has it been renamed?
@@archfrank Sorry, my bad. Thought you meant the type of colour, not the exact match :(
@@archfrank There is an app called paintRack that should be able to show alternatives to "any" paint.
That's exactly it, you're just leaving yourself to go light - dark - light - dark :)
