@@andrewgan557 I was kind expecting him to show that exact panel of just his face right before Kubo shows his torso falling. Kubo is really good showcasing the emotions behind Yamamoto's death

Yamamoto's death was a milestone that showed how things will never be the same and change will be coming to Soul Society. Now Shunsui and Nayura are passing never before seen reforms that never would've happened under Yamamoto's watch especially the outreach to the common people of the Rukon.
@@GundamShinobi00 Truth. No doubt many in the aristocracy are nervous about these reforms even if they won't admit it openly for obvious reasons. The fact that many are starting to question the old status quo by Renji and Rukia's wedding undoubtedly makes them sweat a little more.
I believe the only reason the Gotei 13 couldn't actively help Rukongai is because the Central 46 wouldn't allow it, and after the events of TYBW, Shunsui, being the Captain Commander, and the death of the current memebers of the Central 46,he was able to gain arbitrary control over the Seireitei
@@c731-enfi True. He also certainly decided to initiate this help as an emergency measure, Nayura's altruistic view that they need to do and be better than before made them permanent.
I really didn't like Yamamoto initially, he seemed like a thoroughly two-dimensional character without depth or sympathetic traits. The Fake Karakura Town arc really changed my opinion of him for the better, showcasing both his core virtues (unshakable sense of duty, and a willingness to sacrifice himself for the greater good without hesitation) and his surprising merciful side (having some pity for the likes of Wonderweiss and Ayon, sparing the Tres Bestias, telling Ichigo to save himself and escape before Yama's suicide attack). Oh, and he also truly proved what an absolute badass he was. The Thousand Year Blood War Arc really just accelerated Yamamoto's character development and humanization, showing so many new sides to him, making him so much more sympathetic and relatable even as he became more flawed and erratic. In the end, Yamamoto very surprisingly became one of my favorite captains, and his death was one of the saddest and most shocking moments in the series for me.
I had a very similar experience, although I'd say that I found him intriguing since his introduction based solely on his power. I really appreciate this video, because I never really paid that much attention to Yamamoto's subtle character development in the earlier parts of the story. He seemed like a stubborn, stern old badass with genuine honor and, deep down, a heart of gold from the beginning to me, but he actually does change and it is so interesting and compelling that his mellowing is actually what causes his demise. The usual story convention is that the softening of the rigid authority figure ends up leading to a happy outcome, but this is actually pretty relatable and realistic in that, by becoming more humanized and not such an idealized embodiment of supposed perfection, he simultaneously becomes more relatable and flawed. All of this together makes Yamamoto in retrospect such a well-written character, and while I'm deeply moved by his death, it truly does make the story so much richer. No other character death in Bleach thus is more profound and impactful, making Yamamoto one of my favorite Bleach characters.
Don't forget the Reigai arc where he initially sought to destroy Nozomi the moment their eyes met "for the greater good", but then decided to show his merciful side by taking a bullet (by "bullet" I mean "Ryujin Jakka's fire that Kageroza copied") for her & states that despite everything that she was, she's still just a girl who needs protection, even went as far as tagging-up with Ichigo & Nozomi just to take down Kageroza (despite the 3 of them ultimately losing). Also the part in the Reigai arc, where he said he was proud of Kyoraku & Ukitake when they rebelled against him during the Soul Society arc, and that he was disappointed at seeing their Reigai counterparts being voluntarily shackled by Kageroza's command, also says alot for Yamamoto's character. Even tho this is just a filler arc, it really helps in developing Yamamoto's character, & the fact that Reigai arc can fit into canon story makes it alot better.
well I always saw him as this respectable teacher character .yeah he is that military head but i already liked him in the soul society arc. His two students messed up the execution of a criminal and first he wants to hear their motive, when Rukia is executed he lies to her and says Ichigo and co will be save to put her mind at ease. He didn't need to do that. In Karakura he spares the Tres Bestia and even says, he is glad Wonderweiss doesn#t look like a child anymore and is furious for Wonderweiss, you know a hollow, a being he killed thousands of because of what Aizen did to him .he did have redeemable qualities but they kind of were always just the second layer of his character beneath his stern leader facade and for that I actually liked him.
"You think you can kill me that easily, just by neutralizing my Ryūjin Jakka? How naïve! I am astounded by your complete lack of insight. How do you think I remained Captain-Commander of the Gotei 13 for over a thousand years? No Shinigami born in that entire time has been stronger than I."
@@bubblines Naw I don’t think so, 1000yrs ago he looked fairly young but then again Unohana is about 1000yrs old too and she still looks about the same including few in the zero division. Tho I’m positive that Yama is 1000+ because he looked like a middle aged soul reaper back then so he’s gotta very very old. Tho the only one I could say is older than him for sure is Ichibe, and maybe Oetsu? He created the zanpaktou so he’s gotta be old af too..
I wanted to add on the haori symbolism. He once scold the three captains for losing it as it seems to represent honor or something of the sort. After he kills Driscol, he loses it. This may be a representation to how he is now pursuing his personal vendetta more than fighting for honor/duty for the gotei 13, which relates to his downfall in this video.
I think the mix of losing his lieutenant and the ghosts of his past coming back both equally affect Yamamoto. Given how much pride Yamamoto has even despite his massive character development, I can imagine he would think he was to blame for his lieutenant’s death as his failure to kill Yhwach 1000 years ago created this situation. It’s not just that he lost his best friend, but that he also believed he was to blame for this.
“parting is all we know of heaven and all we need of hell” love is the strongest emotion it can cause such joy and at the same time the greatest pain. I think you’re right I also think for the first time he truly feels alone which can also take a great toll on you. In a way his death was like a flame, at first it’s strong and over time it dwindles down and dies if there is nothing to keep the fire going. His death was truly sad and tragic to put everything he had into his attack to make amends for his mistakes only to fail and die. I had no clue his death would have such a impact the way it did on all of us. RIP old man Yama you truly were the best of all the head captains.
At the end of the day you have to admire his strength for building a society around him. He might have been stern and stubborn but thats the foundations of a strong society. I think he's a real life representation of old people who don't know how to change because how they've always done things is all they know that works.
He had to be that way as a leader if he shows weakness then it would effect his team so he was this man of stone to make his squads stronger. It’s as they say you’re only as strong as your leader. You grew to love him and I never expected him to die atleast not as easy as he did which leaves an empty hole now that he is gone but he is now with his vice captain his best friend and can now Rest In Peace knowing that he did his job great and left behind a squad he can be proud of.
He did change though. He clung so tight to his old ways but then when Ichigo needed help he approved of restoring Ichigo's powers which the yamamoto at the start of the series wouldn't have ever thought of doing.
@@koobertohumperdink8702 that and he acknowledged ichigo for his feats like when rukia was sentenced to the death he literally changed the laws and fought against said laws because of how wrong it was. On top of that Yama acknowledged a human no tie to soul society helping against Aizen. All this lead to giving ichigo back his powers. He held high regards toward Ichigo to the point imo he was pleased where the future was heading in a positive direction due to all those changes Ichigo brought.
The scene between Mayuri and Yamamoto was one of the best panels in the manga. That just showed you where both characters were at that point. Mayuri was his usual himself. Yamamoto was clearly conflicted. It let me know that the arc was going in a good direction. It was one hell of a dialogue
I think Yamamoto’s greatest weakness was making things too personal. When that happened he became blinded by emotions and exhausted himself and left an opening to be exploited.
It's for reasons like this I'm looking forward to the anime coming back, it seems like Kubo was rushed when finishing the manga, but since it's been so long between hopefully we can get things expanded a bit in the final arc adaptation.
@@sajohnson09 I hopes so. If I am being honest, the thousand year blood war is pretty disappointing even without the rushed ending. If the anime does come back I hope it strengthens the arc as a whole
Considering Yhwach is now the soul king it's poetic justice. That the "torment" he wanted to free his father from ended up becoming his own fate in the process. So if you consider the situation that the god of the bleach world gets put in to be humbled then that counts. But you could also just look at is as "well they're the god of the verse" so that's kinda also the opposite of being humbled lol. Different perspectives
@@ExtraVictory does the Soul King even have thoughts? Idk much about Soul King stuff, I haven't read the novels or if there's a data book that goes further into it. I knew Yhwach turned into the Soul King because of MrTommo but I don't think he ever said if the Soul King was awake this whole time or not. I always thought that the Soul King is just a comatose torso. It would be pretty cool knowing that Yhwach still had his thought process and was forever awake, kinda like the ending of I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream.
This is the same thing I'm hoping for, I didn't really care much for the arc after Yamamoto died, but when I heard the anime was coming back to wrap it up, I immediately gained interest again.
@John Cena it wouldn't come back if they didn't think there was money to be made. It isn't about effort, it's about a property making consistent money. Especially if the Hell chapter wasn't actually a one shot, the Bleach anime could return as a seasonal show, and make money for a while.
@John Cena I know this comments is months old so you didn’t see the new trailer but yeah you can tell they are putting a good effort into it. If they didn’t give a fuck it would look like dragon ball super just a quick cash grab with what they had maybe one good animator? Bleach looks amazing so I’m sure they will expand the series on how it’s suppose to be
The panel of yamamoto at chojiro’s funeral gives me so many feelings particularly of the ‘I should be dead, not them’ vibes. I honestly feel like he may have felt he wrongfully outlived his vice captain
@@pertricehuggins8771 Yamamato beat him once. He was capable of defeating him. And his bankai was feared enough that they went out of their way to ensure it wouldn't be used against him.
Yamamoto's descent and Kenpachi's rise will be two of the most amazing moments to see animated that's currently in the manga in my opinion. TYBW I think is the Arc that highlights best what Kubo does as a mangaka.
Yamamoto's character is not only criminally underrated but is also one of the most important characters in story. We saw the glimpse of his demon he had in him and was in slumber. Sadly it was too late for him... Kyoraku has keen intellect? Now think how Yamamoto was able to convince Nobles that he is about to gather criminals and found military organization..
One scene that comes to mind is that of a young Kyoraku finding a picture of Yamamoto (presumably in Bankai) and Yama calles it a Demon of the soul society and that should this Demon ever come return Yama probably wont be coming back. He knew this fight against Ywach was gonna be his last (hence why he left the note that Kyoraku should be new Head Captain). Yama was aware of his own downfall and yet he went to battle anyway.
I thought he said "the demon almost destroyed everything in the past but it wont come back" Cause his bankai basicly destroys what he loves, and the note was just in case of his death (I assume)
@@MrSub132 Yes thats true he did say that but I think Kyoraku asked what if something like that were to return to which Yama said "I probably won't be coming back". Merely conjecture on my part but I believe Yama knew he was gonna die.
@@BlueInferno95 I have to disagree, yama isn't the type of character to admit someone to be stronger than him. I think it's more likely he thought ywach couldnt steal his bankai in my opinion.
This was an old comment of mine on another video about his ost, and i think it still fits so i wanna share. "because of what he was, because of who he was, the old lion stood, it was not a necessity, and yet he stood, his blackened blade full of wrath and his heart full of cinder, he brought forth all his might against the black conqueror, the old lion fell that day, his flame, however, was forever etched into the hearts of those he nourished"
I know Bleach from beginning to end but the things Tommo points out are quite often things I missed. A great video, was not expecting it to be so in depth and accurate. Yama was totally trying to make fake Yhwach feel despair in that fight, he didn’t just want to kill him, he wanted him to be afraid.
Yamamoto's behavior during the first invasion and especially during the fight with Ywhach is very much indicative of him calling himself a "monster" in the past. Such great parallels
It is so interesting where you and DBZimran record video essays for us and what is even more interesting is to see how the both of you have your own opinions about each character.
I have this theory that losing Choojiroo, his best friend and vice-captain made Yamamoto lose his will to live and making his decision to fight Juha was because his lust for revenge but also he wanted to die.
i'd like to just say thank you so much for being in Bleach community, seriously we are very spoiled with you and so many other great Bleach RUclips channels that keep making fantastic content like this one. thank you again and have a good day pal.

his fall was inevitable. when Shunsui took over, he already took necessary measures so that the Soul Society would adapt quickly to all the changes that's happened. He trained Kenpachi and even enlisted Aizen. If he acknowledged that Ichigo can use Hollowfication, then he should have supported the development of gaining that kind of power. imagine if all of the shinigami has hollowfication, the quincy would not stand a chance. he was aware of the vizard all this time who were hiding in the real world. same with kisuke. these are people that he should've tried to understand. not just completely ignore them forever after banishing them.
Ichigo brought the change to Yamamoto of accepting the past and adapting to to change the future but it was a little too late. That's what being old is and Kubo represents Yama very well, clinging to his past ideals and refusing to accept the changes that where happening.
I don't think all of the shinigami should have hollowification due to the way hollowification can affect the user, but there should definitely be a Vizard Corps in the Gotei 13. Use one of the corps that don't have a specific job.
Damn... The way you spoke about these scenes brought the story to life on another level. I felt the tension of being in the same room with Yama in the captains' meeting 🙈
This is a fantastic video and so far my favourite video you have done. Your breakdown and analysis of Yamamoto, made reflect on his character throughout the first invasion in tybw and the shuttle path to self destruction.
You should make a video listing all the times a bleach character lost an arm from the beginning of the series to the end. It'd be nice to know all the instances of an arm being lost no matter how minor or significant.
Having never really cared a lot about Yamamoto, his downfall in the TYBW, subtle development, and relationship with Chojiro really helped me to see him as a whole new character
This also makes me wish that we had any kind of scene between Yamamoto and Unohana. I think she would've been an excellent confidant for Yama. The two eldest captains talking about how and why this is happening and where things may have went wrong.
Honestly given her tenured experience and character change from how she used to be 1000 years ago, I think there is an argument to be made for Unohana being made the Captain Commander after Yamamoto's death at the hands of Yhwach. I guess that then Kyoraku wouldn't have gotten his character arc as such then (which I very much like), though I also think it was something of a missed opportunity to not further give the most senior captain her chance to step up and fill the role of a leader.
@@Rhekon ...Except she is no longer like that? It was strongly implied that both her and Yamamoto both changed from how they were 1000 years ago; neither are their former selves. Yamamoto was, as Yhwach described "a true sword demon who would do whatever it took to defeat his enemy". He did not care about his subordinates, and thus Yhwach feared him. Similarly Unohana was the strongest Captain of the 1st generation and was personally sought out by Yamamoto, given the title of Kenpachi to signify her strength. Yet in the story we clearly see that both change from how they once were; Yamamoto having aged and softened under the burden of maintaining peace, and Unohana having retired her sword to spend her life healing others. In the Thousand Year Blood War arc clearly both "dust off" their past selves so as to face the ghosts of their past; Yamamoto returning to his 'sword demon' self in an effort to slay Yhwach, and Unohana to put on the mask of Yachiru so that she can undo her wrong and return the power that Kenpachi once sealed away himself. Neither is the person they used to be; and Unohana certainly is not the bloodthirsty monster she once was - it was largely a memory that she used for Kenpachi's sake, not how she truly is anymore. I think Unohana would be an incredibly pragmatic and level-headed Head Captain (we even see her hoping that Yamamoto finishes his battle with the fake Yhwach quickly, so she is clearly not always in the favor of fighting endlessly for entertainment).
it's important to remember that ywatch took the coward's road here, using a body double to exhaust yama as well as his second in command (presumably using his schrift to make ywatch's eventual surprise attack that much more effective) for someone who called himself a god, and degraded yamamoto to the point of purposefully excluding him from the special war forces, he sure was scared of an old man. makes ywatch's death all the more sweet, it's glorious to see such a coward be cut down at the peak of his power.
It really sucks he we never got to see the flashback to Yuha’s first invasion on the Soul Society, and how Yamamoto nearly killed him. Maybe that’s one of the things the anime will add, should it return.
I always like how Yamamoto's recruitment brochure says that "even I am still studying". Yes, he was the captain commander, but he learned to still value the input on those under him. Those that are the struts upon which the god of fire that leads soul society stands.
Would have to say this is one of my favorite character analysis, remember this first time seeing Yamamoto in soul society arc all the captains faced him made him seem so mysterious and above them all. The character was always so eerily calm just gave a don’t mess the captain commander vibe.
Yama was actually around for min of 2000yrs. circa 0AD: he creates the gotei 13, but apparently isn't the head captain at first. Instead is head of the Shinigami Academy. Unohana is captain of Squad 11 circa 1000AD: becomes captain commander 1000-1800AD: Kyoraku and Ukitake become captains
Yamamoto created the Gotei 13 around 1000 years ago. That flashback with a young Sasakibe was 2000 years ago, which also should be noted to take place a century after Yamamoto founded "Shinoreijutsuin" (Spiritual Arts Academy).
Great video! Yamamoto is one of my favourite characters and I'm glad we got to see more of him in this arc. Glimpses into Soul Society's past as well was pretty cool. Royd Lloyd is a bit stupid but it is what it is
That's actually a good take on Yamamoto. He was blinded by rage and his need for revenge. He normally doesn't go onto the battlefield at the start. If Yamamoto had been composed like he normally does, he would've stayed behind and encountered the real Ywach Bach instead of fighting a fake and been smart enough not to use Bankai. Instead Yamamoto rushed onto the battlefield and exhausted his stamina fighting a fake Ywach Bach and have his Bankai stolen which led to his death.
great video. you really bring out what the character themselves and kubo could have possibly been thinking during this whole incident. I mean I got the jist of it when reading it years back but you make me double take and think about it more in depth. Keep up the good work.

I can't help but think of how in hindsight, that it was brilliant, sad, and initially I felt he'd been cheated. But at the explanation you provide and my remembering how I felt? It truly is a rather impressively played out scene. Some hidden beauty in how he delivers on the fall of Yamamoto.
You have such a way with words, it's surprising to some extent that you choose to make bleach content with your expertise being what it is. I salute you. Do you know anything about the alternate final battle script yet? Seems interesting. Schrift P ftw
I always enjoy your videos Tommo! Another small point I'd like to add is that during the Karakura Town fight, when he stepped in to fight Aion he did say that "You should be ashamed of yourself for forcing your Captain Commander on the Battlefield" and later on actually hide himself to set up the Ennetsu Jigoku to burn EVERYONE rather than fight himself. This point also showed his changes in the Ywach fight as not only he did not prepare like he did with Aizen but also actively engage in battle and that change caused him his life, had he been himself and setting things up, only show up when all of the other captains has fallen someone else might have been able to take out fake Ywach and his death would have been prevented
Dude! Your the best! Befote watching your channel I didn't know "cant fear your own world" existed! Now I own them and reading through the full manga so I can read them in their entirety!
I was genuinely thinking about the morality of Yamamoto in the segment where you outline his Bankai being stolen - especially as Juha says "How about I resurrect dead Shinigami now?", because it makes you wonder about the morality of his actions as a whole, was it really right for him to take so much sadistic pleasure in disposing of Juha (at least the impostor Juha). Riveting stuff really, and I hope you hit 100k soon.
Sasakibe is the most disrespected character in all of Bleach. He’s been Yama’s right hand man for over a millennia. He’s a member of the original Gotei and had the ability to be a captain as well. Definitely should have had some crowning moments in the series.
@@mra3076 Yeah fighting wonderweiss would've been awesome, maybe giving him an emotional moment about losing to Ichigo like that. I would've loved to see him have a relationship with kyoraku and Ukitake. And showing his bankai against driskoll before he gets blasted away
I thought it was great to see what the real Yamamoto and Unohana were like, it makes sense how during the first blood war they managed to defeat the Quincy since all of the soul reapers back then were as violent and bloodthirsty.
I love how everyone thought the big bad guy was gone. That seeing Uyru didn't instantly question the fact that the Quincy are still around, stronger then ever. But no he sat back after Aizen for 10 human years and didn't get stronger nor did his captains.

4:57 - Yamamoto doesn't want Orihime to heal his arm because she's from the Living Realm yet Mayuri can casually regrow Kenpachi ripped arm after Pernida's battle.
An argument can be made that Mayuri was taking a while to research Orihime's battles and powers since he obviously couldn't kidnap her and experiment on her. He only happened to finish by the second invasion.

I actually liked it kubo showed what a monster yama is while at the same time humainizing him like everyone else he's flawed his enemy outsmarted him and took atvantage of his weakneses
@tom gu He could NOT activate the almighty till the second invasion sir. Go back and re-read the story. If he had used the Almighty against Yama he would've stripped the sternritter of their powers. He only used the Almighty against Ichibe and Ichigo at the END of the story

@@calebj8134 your completely right and let's remember he had the power of the almighty in there first confrontation and lost which is why he sent a fake this go round
Yamamoto's death was a milestone that showed how things will never be the same and change will be coming to Soul Society. Now Shunsui and Nayura are passing never before seen reforms that never would've happened under Yamamoto's watch especially the outreach to the common people of the Rukon.
Kinda like how an old regime finally falls and gives way to the new generation. Good stuff 👍🏾

I wanted to add on the haori symbolism. He once scold the three captains for losing it as it seems to represent honor or something of the sort. After he kills Driscol, he loses it.
Kubo’s drawing was at it’s peak when he drew Yama in the TYBW
It's a shame we didn't get to see Yhwach get humbled like Yamamoto. We only get like one panel then he gets cut down.
@@sajohnson09 Dont get your hopes up.
My hopes is that the anime expands the final arc and reveals the things Kubo wasn't given time to finish

I thought he said "the demon almost destroyed everything in the past but it wont come back"
Cause his bankai basicly destroys what he loves, and the note was just in case of his death (I assume)
@@MrSub132 Yes thats true he did say that but I think Kyoraku asked what if something like that were to return to which Yama said "I probably won't be coming back". Merely conjecture on my part but I believe Yama knew he was gonna die.

Yamamoto's behavior during the first invasion and especially during the fight with Ywhach is very much indicative of him calling himself a "monster" in the past. Such great parallels

his fall was inevitable. when Shunsui took over, he already took necessary measures so that the Soul Society would adapt quickly to all the changes that's happened.

She's unfit. Her way of fighting especially is unsuitable. She'd rather kill indefinitely than win.
I agree Unohana would have been a great Captain Commander
Unohana doesen't have the leadership and she would be conflicted, a leader and smart Retsu Unohana or a brutal and straight forward Yachiru Unohana?
@@Flip4910 Nah. Unohana was strong and brutal, but it seems Kyoraku is wiser and that's why he was chosen.
it's important to remember that ywatch took the coward's road here, using a body double to exhaust yama as well as his second in command (presumably using his schrift to make ywatch's eventual surprise attack that much more effective)

Unohana is captain of Squad 11
circa 1000AD: becomes captain commander
1000-1800AD: Kyoraku and Ukitake become captains
Yamamoto created the Gotei 13 around 1000 years ago. That flashback with a young Sasakibe was 2000 years ago, which also should be noted to take place a century after Yamamoto founded "Shinoreijutsuin" (Spiritual Arts Academy).

If Yamamoto had been composed like he normally does, he would've stayed behind and encountered the real Ywach Bach instead of fighting a fake and been smart enough not to use Bankai.

23:39 You're right! POWERFUL imagery of Yamamoto!
Dude. Great work. So much passion I’m your videos
Even Aizen knew Yamaji had a weakness and that was his ego
I’m the 1,000th like! Yammy is one of my favorite characters. May he RIP
I love how everyone thought the big bad guy was gone. That seeing Uyru didn't instantly question the fact that the Quincy are still around, stronger then ever. But no he sat back after Aizen for 10 human years and didn't get stronger nor did his captains.
Finally! Loved Yama's character and all the faults. Excited to watch!
I love your videos. Huge thank you for opening my shinigama eyes. Still one of my favorite series to date
This was a great one. I read this manga 3 times and I missed so much. Bravo.
I always had a soft spot for old, wise men. Gandalf, Dumbledore, Whitebeard, Yamamato. I know it is a common archetype, but something makes them just so respectable and great
Great breakdown, Yamji really couldn't keep a cool head no pun intended and it's an excellent character beat
It's a shame we didn't get a better payoff and consequence of his downfall
No fleshed out flashback and backstory and no proper use of his Bankai
4:57 - Yamamoto doesn't want Orihime to heal his arm because she's from the Living Realm yet Mayuri can casually regrow Kenpachi ripped arm after Pernida's battle.
An argument can be made that Mayuri was taking a while to research Orihime's battles and powers since he obviously couldn't kidnap her and experiment on her. He only happened to finish by the second invasion.
Not gonna lie one of the things that i didn't like was mayuri and his "magical" drugs i bet if he've met the death dealer he would have pulled some needele and bam job done his bankai on the other hand was intresting and unique
