It’s so charming: When Max talks about other fighting games and how to play them, he talks about them like a fellow player, or even an instructor. But when it comes to old school MvC1? He’s a teacher, like a *dad.*
I felt that! Even back in the arcades, I always gravitated better towards MvC1 than 2. The roster was mindblowing in MvC2 for sure but the relative simplicity of 1 and its chill-er vibes just felt better for me personally. That being said, the gameplay also feels polished in 1 than 2. I wished it had a larger roster too!
I love how you explain everything with such clarity. I feel like im listening to a friend helping me trying to be the best I can be in a game. It’s comforting.
Yeah this game was pretty mind-blowing back in the day I remember first seeing an arcade cabinet at my local laundromat nobody was playing it I gave it a go and I didn't look back😂
Love watching yours and justins collection vids. I like going into training after watching and trying out stuff from the vids, glad to add some mvc1 stuff to my training.
1. Pick Strider Hiryu 2. Pick a Beam Super character 3. Hold Start + MK (for beginners) to select Psylocke between every match (pros pick Colossus, but it's some Start+3 buttons that's harder to pin down at first) 4. Spam Ouroboros and basic combos with Strider, maybe QFC+K on occasion to negate zoners until he's dead (you'll rebuild meter about as fast as you can spend it if you're landing hits, and certainly if the opponent is blocking them) 5. MP + MK to call Psylocke (or Colossus), Beam Super, repeat
Colossus and Psylocke don't just carry and have priority - they also build damn near an entire meter on hit OR on block. So they don't JUST set up your super, they literally fuel it, too!
I'm glad I figured out the button mapping for some of these games except MVC2, I didn't know Light Medium and Heavy took up one button, then I realized every Street Fighter game has done this
The assist button combinations are using binary to count. 000000 is random. 100000 is Unknown Soldier. 010000 is Lou. 110000 is Arthur. Pretty smart! Former CS teacher here! Psylocke is 000010 which is 16.
MVC 2 is just too insane and fast for me. 2v2 feels just right and MVC1 feels like I can have a chance at learning the game. The 1v1s on X men COTA and MSH cut all that flashy assist stuff for a good ol fashion beatdown and my prefered way to play.
Absolutely agree. I'm actually surprised that Capcom didn't add the Marvel Super Hero and X-Men beat 'em ups War of the Gems and Mutant Apocalypse. They are great games that fit perfectly in the collection and are on the Arcade 1up Marvel vs Capcom mini arcade cabinet.
And unlike MK1, Capcom not only limits the assists and didn't gut character movesets to make you use them for combos. In fact, you can play MVC1 without ever using one if you wanted to.
Special note. The more times you can call an assist character, the "weaker" the assist is considered. Except for Lou. Lou is great. Psylocke and Colossus are also considered great because they have a fair amount of strikes, and they are active from off-screen. Not sure if this was mentioned yet but I only found the trick to the assist character codes last year. Each button is assigned a number (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 20, I think) as is each assist character (1 - 24). You just hold down the total of the character you want. Psylocke is 16 (MK). Lou is 2 (MP). Colossus is 19 (1+2+16, LP+HP+MK).
Assists also do decent chip damage especially those that hits you multiple times. Colossus and Psylocke assists can be dodged to avoid chip damage via super jumping since they move on the ground in a straight line.
Always happy to see some MVC1 love, another video suggestion for Max with the whole collection is “Rate the Endings” I’d really love to see his thoughts and reactions on all the endings.

So happy you made one of these for MvC1. This was definitely the game for me that activated the fighting game neurons of mash buttons and watch cool flashy stuff happen on screen.
Max forgot to mention more thins like that super jumps are made with down-up or pushing tree kicks at the same time. Air combos can be also finished with an air special or super move and not with hard button. And another important thing, there are combos that makes a knock down the combo can continue if you hit the opponent very quick with Low Kick (you must be close) and you can make another combo.
Recently hung out with my cousins and played the MVC collection. They only had the PS1 Marvel/Capcom games growing up, so did I. We all agreed that MVC1 just felt better than 2, as a game. The presentation (and nostalgia) helped a lot as well. I just wish it had even close to the roster of 2. MvC 1 was the afterschool arcade meet-up so I'm not sure if I like it more for play over pure nostalgia. It's also the one game where I don't mind playing as Captain Commando.

When Wolverine tries to chip damage you with Berserker Barrage, but you change into Mecha Zangief and do your Hyper Super Grab, this is when the hype part starts.
It's crazy that 24 years later people don't even know about the Variable Cross in MvC. It was a fun exclusive move for that game that really only works in two-on-two combat situations so I was displeased they didn't bring the Variable Cross back (or Cross Fever mode, for that matter) in Tatsunoko vs Capcom or Marvel vs Capcom Infinite.

I grew up with the PS1 version of MvC, so it's gonna be nice playing a more arcade accurate version
MVC1 is my favorite in the collection. MVC2 is great too but sometimes i feel like im just avoiding assist attacks. MVC1 has assists but at least theyre limited.
The backgrounds in this game are much better than in 2.
MvC 1 is my favorite of all of them.
Double war machine and striderine or red venom with anybody is funny and those characters shit on the rest of the cast almost as much as mvc2 top tiers do to that game
I like MVC1 better because of the stages, music, roster.
I've always hated the 3d and Jazz songs from MVC2, ever since I was a kid.
The two character at the same time with free supers is amazing.
