    I enjoyed your video a lot . Without sounding too critical, 30 minutes of Chicago was a bit much. It's great to see videos such as yours promoting travel on Amtrak. Thanks!

      Same here! I took the California Zephyr in 2010 from Chicago to San Fran stopping in Colorado and Utah. Phenomenal scenery -especially from Co Rockies and on. I can't wait to do the SW Chief in the near future! This video gets me pumped! :)

      I will probably be travelling by myself too because no one in my family knows what real fun is. I'm getting on the Zephyr one way or another. Southwest Chief is looking good too.

    You really did a wonderful job with this, Metroktransit. I've been wanting to take a cross country train trip and you've convinced me that this one would be a good one for me. Thanks for all the effort you put into this.

    The only choice for long distance travel for me in the United States & Canada is by Amtrak in the United States & ViaRail in Canada. Train travel sure beats driving, taking a bus and the hassles of flying. It is the best way to see the country.

    My Wife and I rode this train from CHI to LAX wice and loved it both times. However, reinstating the New Orleans to Orlando would be great! Boarding in Orlando and getting off in LAX and vice versa would be fantastic - albeit less expensive. I wish that CSX would quit blaming Amtrak for the disastrous wreck ofthe "Sunset Limited" because it was not Amtrak's fault. The fault lies on the tugboat helmsmen who couldn't read a radar scope and shoved a load of barges into a bridge support and knocked a section of track out of line.

    The Southwest Chief from Chicago to Los Angeles all the way on the Santa Fe tracks. You will spend almost two full days and two nights aboard the Amtrak Superliner train. As you travel west the trees get fewer and fewer, to there are no trees at all. While you won't get there in a hurry, you will see the US along the way. Before the railroads it took months to do the same.

    • @SeaToby11
      @SeaToby11 9 лет назад

      And if you were to continue the cross country train trip, it is another full day from Chicago to New York City on the Lakeshore Limited, with Viewliner sleepers and Amfleet coaches, not a Superliner. Three full days to cross a continent, not a short overnight trip on the Caledonian Sleeper train in the UK.

    • @tyrese3745
      @tyrese3745 9 лет назад

      I've done that three times.

      It's actually partially on former CBQ tracks, from Chicago to Galesburg, IL. That's because both the SF and the CBQ's tracks ran through Galesburg, but the CBQ's route is slightly shorter

    I went from Chicago to Seattle earlier this year. I also passed through a lot of sparsely populated land. I wondered how people came to live in these 'empty' quarters. What do they do? BTW- Liked your video.

      LiaMaKaChauHai It changes day to day, and how early you purchase, just like the other forms of travel. Coach fares are considerably cheaper than sleeper fares. Check out Amtrak's website.

    How long was your train ride?

  • @AZCARick
    @AZCARick 9 лет назад

    Took this train and a few connecting ones on a trip from Arizona to Philadelphia. This one To Chicago was nice. Had the roomette (On all trains) both coming and going on the SW Chief. Took the Capitol Limited ot of Chicago which was a joke consideration the 6 hours worth of delays. Took the Hoosier back from Philly to Chicago, No water pressure in the shower and a car attendant who disappeared the entire trip after we started out. I've been taking the train since 2005 and they seem to get worse every year. I might add here that coming out of Chicago the SW Chief started having a braking issue and held us up in Kansas City for 5 hours. People in coach were getting restless and one passenger got so angry with the delays by the time we got to Albuquerque they had to call the police to get him off and we delayed another hour and a half. I am afraid to fly so the next long trip, I think I'll drive. I'm used to it.

    • @SeaToby11
      @SeaToby11 9 лет назад

      AZCARick I prefer a train ride. Just plan to get there a day early, or two before you need to. Then the delays won't bother you. The same on the return trip. The freight railroads own the tracks outside the northeast corridor, and they dispatch their freight trains with more priority than Amtrak. Even when I fly I have had delays and flights cancelled at the last minute for maintenance and weather issues. The newest Superliner sleepers are twenty years old, some are over thirty years old. Considering their age, Amtrak does a very good job keeping them clean and operational. The latest I have arrived is one day on a return trip. The latest arrival getting there was 16 hours into Los Angeles, both trips with the Sunset Limited.

    So when is ANYBODY going to re-open the Sunset Limited route?
    I'd buy a 15 day 8 segment USA rail pass in a heartbeat if that section of line was opened again.

      *****,
      On September 22nd 1993, the bridge over the "Big Bayou Canot" in Louisiana suffered a catastrophic collision with a barge.
      8 minutes later an Amtrak train derailed on the bridge killing 47 and injuring 103 others.

    • @nudist0885
      @nudist0885 10 лет назад +2

      Good Question.
      Maybe they think that it might happen again.
      With the number of people that died and the amount of effort it took to rescue them maybe they don't want to.

    • @otto295
      @otto295 10 лет назад +1

      Because the bridge doesn't belong to Amtrak but to CSX Transportation?

    • @Shinyarc
      @Shinyarc 6 лет назад

      nudist0885 The Bayout wreck has nothing to do with it. Katrina was the reason it was cancelled.

      ron hawkins Its usually the fullest leaving Chicago and approaching Los Angeles. During the summer months and winter holidays the trains fill up. Unlike the airlines, trains have linear routes, with passengers hopping on and off the train traveling different distances. Of course flying is much faster, but riding a slow train and driving a bit faster than they train take a long time, at least on a train you are traveling while you are sleeping.

    Please let the crew do their own annoucements re: how they will go around the train get dinner reservation-it all sound so phony and uncomfortable as the written speech goes and not how people really talk-the repeated "make my way through-over and over is so boring. Don't let them get on and attempt to be funny-they are not esp on TX Eagle-we do not need to hear about someone going to IC whatever that is and unless an announcement really affects us we don't need to hear it-meal times, next stop ok but nothing else. It wakes sleeping babies and adults and if we are making calls -the phone hears the blasted announcements and reacts to it and screws up the call. more later=just drastically less messages please.
