Hi, you keep referring to the laws that apply in, "the UK" and "England". Which one??? As I'm sure your aware, the UK consists of three other countries. The law in Scotland, in general, varies greatly from English law. Can you please clarify if these are UK wide laws, or as you refer, apply only in England?
Great point, Tom...pinned your comment.
These are DEFRA rules, so England. They work closely with devolved governments in both Scotland and Wales but thats not to mean the rules are exactly the same.
Brimwood Farm What is Defra??😳
DEFRA is the governing body in the UK for the farming/foods community. It produces the rules for livestock keeping and food production, for example.
DEFRA is a EU dept. Not a UK one. It's responsible for common fishery and common agricultural policy... Scum in other words
I live in Scotland and keep chickens and all these rules apply to us as well. 19/01/2019
Anyone else watching this April 2020? Getting tips for when lockdown is over because you've lost your business and decided to live off grid from now on?
tengo una hermana y una poulet. c'est interessante, parce que ilya dos quand c'edt enorme, estque quil ya a une piscine aujord'hui?
Also the contamination from china😯
I sold my house before covid and plan to buy a small holding as soon as covid 'lifts' so hopefully I'll be there before the 'wave'.
Been off grid for 18 years now we’re electric
And gas is concerned we are on a narrow boat
But are growing our own veg now and getting 🐓 soon 👍
maybe not fully off grid but definitely on that page!
1. If registered. If not, do what you want.
2. If registered. If not, feed them as you wish.
3. If registered. If not, let the buggérs roam.
4. If registered. If not, make sure your feed comes from a better country than China, and feed them what you wish!
5. IF REGISTERED! HAVE I MADE MY POINT YET? DONT REGISTER TO THE GOVERNMENT.
Do what you like on your own land unless selling them to others. The rules are there only to protect the big producers and nothing else! Money money money money! 🥱
Thanks for the video.
Isn't it against the law NOT to REGISTER?😂
@@szymontanski1660No! Where does it say I need to be registered? I've looked, and it doesn't apply to most people.
Questions? ❤
I’m from Ireland and there are a load of laws about hens. No one would ever dream of keeping to them though
It depends on how much land you've got, and how close your neighbours are. Cock crowing at dawn might not go down well with everyone.
You make the council seem like tv enforcement officers looking for chicken violations.
That’d be a great Monty python sketch
i used to feed my chickens kitchen scraps veg peelings carrot tops ect never had a problem i think its just about being sensible to be honest common sense with these things keeping them in a clean as possible environment.. long as you aint reckless i dont see the issue to be honest .. i was also a butcher for 10 years im aware of food contamination
Fair enough, but you're not everybody, are you?
@@BigHenFor nope and common sense aint that common I'm just saying it was ok for me
all about buy more ... and buy on large ... innit?
Such a great video, clear and concise, making it easy to understand. You did an excellent job.❣
We bought some eggs from a supplier up the road. They were fertilised (there is a white dohnut ring in the yolk) so we are incubating some!
Great video, clear, simply explained - superb job!
+Liz Zorab thanks Liz. Thought I'd do one after the livestream chat. Think you should do one too 😁
I think an update about the law regarding noise, smell and complaints from neighbours would be interesting too.
Jeez we are so controlled in this country. The government just love to poke their noses into absolutely everything. This year I started vegetable gardening and managed to get a veg plot and greenhouse going. I love the satisfaction of growing some of my own food and not relying on supermarkets for everything plus the bonus of not having modified or chemically treated food. I would love to have a couple of chickens just for the eggs and they could have some of the scraps from the garden that would normally go to compost but all these rules make me think twice. I'm sure modern society would just love us all to be consumers and spend money instead of trying to be more self sufficient. Not a good thing in my opinion as we should all be encouraged to produce something ourselves no matter how small
I do understand why the rules are in place (contamination of the food chain) but for people who just want to keep a few chickens in their back garden it is rather OTT. Dont be put off ... you can still use all your kitchen scraps in your compost heap to build lovely soil for your vegetable garden. And you can still feed the chickens all the scraps directly from your garden when you're gardening - so any greens that dont come inside the house. I'll deleaf cabbages, top carrots and radishes, pull weeds etc straight from the garden etc and give direct to the chickens. That's all fine. :)
@@BrimwoodFarm I'd also love to keep bees at some point and was looking at getting a flow hive which allows you to extract the honey without opening the hive and disturbing the bees. I guess I'll have to look into the regulations regarding owning a beehive before deciding whether to buy one. With regards to chickens my sister had a couple in her garden and they were ex battery hens that she had rescued which I thought was quite nice as she let them roam freely round her garden. Her neighbour also did the same and the chickens would often swap sides through a hole in the adjoining fence.
As far as I know, very few regs re bees but then I dont have them yet either.
@@BrimwoodFarm I don't have any livestock myself but thinking about it for the future...
Did you find out whether it's ok to give chickens earthworms or mealworms grown on site?
Someone I know is going abroad and giving me their chicken soon, I had no idea of so many rules so this was very useful. I have a cat so have to look up on how to handle that.
if i grow masses of spare crops and am a veggie anyway, wht can go wrong?
Considering getting 4 chickens just doing some research great video very helpful
I live in woodland with clearings on the smallholding I run I have chickens at the moment ducks and geese below 50 at present. what are the rules with a woodland smallholding? and what to do with a greedy hen she is a mother hen who loves food, my little missy, she gorges and has squirts and okay again just needing some advice she is on reduce feed and I scatter the feed so everyone gets there to share what else can I do?
Can you feed chickens earthworms from a vegetable garden compost bin (without kitchen scraps)? I hope so because when I previously had 6 chicken they loved them.
Me and my sister are thinking about this because ever since I was like 5 (im 11 now) i have wanted to be a farmer
Just out of interest. But how many birds do you have and how much space do you give them. Im wondering how many birds i could get for the amount of land ive got
Also in the UK, it varies per council some are strict some careless and some care stronger with regards to certain practices, the UK is very segregated in regards to how Councils apply Government set Regulations.
+M Akhtar I agree. It really falls to the individuals and how much they know/understand.
I used to work for the Council, and its hard for them to provide things in writing as many of them don't know and don't have the resources to find out, the future may be dull as many European Companies are buying out council departments for a few years just how Westminister and Camden sold Environmental Services to the French Company Veolia whose charges are bogus and sky high.
I have a massage business, and my council wanted certain certificates from me, I requested they come together with all other Boroughs in England and decide together what is needed and what isn't before trying to impose individual laws which I consider bullying, so they stopped harassing me now LOL last I checked we have a single parliament not 2 state Goverment of Queen and Parliament.
So informative! Thank you xxx
Outer cabbage leaves for MY hens??? Gee, they're so bloody spoilt I'm lucky if they'll eat lettuce from waitrose.
Thank you, very interesting and its good to keep up with the legal side of things. better to know than paying out fines.

Useful. Thank you.
I just buried in my back garden woods because she was a loved chicken
Peace. I want to keep chickens, no way would I put a pet into the bin!
You shouldn't
How do you go around winter months ?
Would this be the same for quail as plan on more this year 👍
I breed my own millworms for my reptiles. Mine are kept in porridge oats. Could I not feed them 2 my chickens?
yes they like them
I want to keep chickens in my garden ? ... how do I go about this ?
Just keep chickens if u have over 50 birds in the uk u must have a cph number and register as a homestead
Where can we buy really strong coops in UK ??
Other countries have great coops, UK is very much lacking.
We need a list of great coop builder's bit finding them hard to locate.

Hi, How and where to buy your first chicks or chickens? can I hatch chickens in London from hatching eggs from ebay uk? We are moving to a property with a big garden and I want to get into having chickens. I have had experience of taking care of multiple chickens before in another country.
CHICKENS!! I LOVE THEM, sadly I can't keep them:(

What about the roster crowing and you only have 1 roster in the flock but the neighbours complaining about the noise?
Thanks, it quiet helpful for beginners
Hello' Very nice and informatic video. Thank u.
Can You tell me How Can I move My Chickens UK to Pk please
Thankyou . Very interesting .
Very helpful 👍👍
I knew this vid was coming after our conversation in the live chat xx
I thought I'd ruin everyone else's chicken keeping too... Lol!
Brimwood Farm ha ha!
Can I keep chicken in a chicken coop in the garden?
How much price of light sussex heritage one dozen eggs?
Can’t believe I didn’t know about dried meal worms coming from China, or any of these other regulations. (I don’t have any chickens yet) I’d like to know if your chicken can leave the property as a pet to visit someone else, or go on public land eg a common, park, or woodland in England?
If the government says you can't feed kitchen scraps to your chickens due to contamination, why would it be alright to feed kitchen scraps to foxy? xoxo from Arizona USA
+Suzi Saint James yes. We ARE allowed to do that...the one thing we can do. Lol
So helpful thank you
Do u have to feed everyday
Can I give lettuce to my birds from the supermarket???
Also Keep an eye on the defra website as if there's a quarantine I place your birds must be covered by a roof and keep away from wild birds. So letting them roam could lead to a fine if your reported.
Ross Minton yes, exactly. Another good reason to register with DEFRA.
Really interesting! Thanks. What about chickens coming into contact with composted kitchen scraps? I use a Hotbin, which should kill the nasty stuff.
If it's composted, as far as I know, it's all fine by then.
R u allowed a cockerel in a back garden in a street 🇬🇧 UK street.
Thx Karen
i think ill decide what my chickens eat
Hi Geoff, I am new on my chicken journey, yesterday, on one of my three seven week old chickens beak, my son noticed a small crack and today, it now looks like the fork on a snake's tongue with the centre section of the upper beak missing. It seems to be eating ok but I am looking for some advice on if I need to do anything. I am feeding them Chick starter crumble. Any advice would be appreciated.
I've not actually come across this before...for a beak to break so easily it must've been quite weak. Beaks will regrow so I would monitor and make sure it's eating. If it's just going to be a pet chicken and it can feed properly, you shouldn't come up against too many problems.
Thanks, yes, pet chickens. I have found a youtube video showing how to trim and file to prevent the break going into the pink part of the beak. Wish me luck.
Nola Williams perfect. Yes, just as we have the quick in our fingernails they have it in their beak. Sounds like you've formed a good plan so good luck!
I literally buy cabbage which are wrapped in plastic, I unwrap it and take it straight down to the chickens, that can't be classed as scraps surely as it came from the house but can't possibly be contaminated
This was so helpful. Thank you for this 😊
+Michael Draper I didn't know a lot when I started...or even halfway through...so thought I'd share!
If 1 dies can't you just pluck it then eat it
Haha. Hands up from all those who don’t give a toss about stupid laws and will continue to do what they want.
Hi thanks some good info there. what about vaccinations and de worming? do the chickens for meat or eggs have to be vaccinated and wormed? Can you feed the live meal worms and normal worms to the chickens? Can i use and store things i grow for chicken feed? Thanks ...
yes, foraging for insects/live worms reduces aggression and pecking in all insect eating birds. Same as feeding raw meat to cats may reduce their inclination to hunt wild animals.
It was pointed out in the video no mealworms alive or dead
If you have to cull a bird how do you do it as seems in UK they say must stun first then cut neck, can’t find you tube video In UK to show this process only US video and they cut neck/artery with sharpe knife.
Regulations in the UK state that you must stun - in poultry and rabbits that can be done by dislocation of the neck if other equipment isnt available. For stallholders etc this is usually achieved by a bolt gun in rabbits and breaking the neck or dislocating using the broomstick method for poultry. Hope that helps!
Brimwood Farm thank you for answering so quickly, that is very helpful with the broomstick method.
@@user-vx6tc8mv9y no worries. It is hard in the UK because taking any poultry to the abattoir just wouldnt make economic sense so luckily they currently have this legislation for poultry. However, it also only counts for specific sizes...I'm fairly sure when you go up to turkeys a stun gun is required.
Watching this in 2020 hits different 😳
gave my chickens boiled oats a and veg for years.also ground egg shells....
doesnt it not hurt their digestive sysytem giving them veg?
@@bootangy no it doesn't hurt their digestive system.. They eat plant life to...
what about my casters and maggot i use for fishing they are uk grown
I can't see that there would be a problem there. They'll be happy hens!

Nice information
Please can you message me the links to the rules as I can't find these online. Thanks!
As with everything government, it's all rather convoluted. However, you can find links here and start to dig into the legislation: apha.defra.gov.uk/documents/surveillance/diseases/backyard-poultry-guidance.pdf
my family are looking to get chickens for eggs. do you need males or can you keep 2 females?
Males are great layers mate.. Good luck!
Beloved, may we have a link to the UK relevant legislation. I appreciate the organisations such as DEFRA, however, i always prefer a referral to actual legislation. ONE LOVE
And Dried worn can be given to pigeons.
How can they fine you really for giving them your carrot peelings 🤔 seems a really daft rule
Is it illegal to incinerate chickens on your land?
Nice video!.......I'm the opposite....ex smallholder living (tolerating, coping !) In a small house with a tiny yard....but I've just been allocated an allotment, so things are looking up. My smallholding was in Ireland back in the 80's and 90's........needless to say, i'm so glad i found your video as the new 'laws' are something i was not familiar with in the UK. What i think of some of them, i'll keep to myself! 😐
You're very Welcome to join me on my journey/new venture/channel.......(only just started it, so it's a bit sparse)....I'm a big advocate for the fact that you never stop learning, however long you've been doing something....and a big fan of sharing knowledge, ideas and skills. I've got some LF Light Sussex brewing in one of my old incubators at the moment.....wish me luck!
Love your channel!🌹
Are Pheasants included in the poultry list??
I think pheasants coungbas game do different rules. However, if in doubt send DEFRA an email.
Do you need a roof on a chicken run? A lot don't on people in my allotments dont I have been building mine doing the same with no roof but someone online said you need one it's the law to separate the wild birds?
No law in the UK for chicken runs with roofs ... and think of all the free range. They might have got their wires crossed with the rules when we had an avian flu lockdown a couple of years ago. At that time all birds had to be kept inside or within runs covered in tarpaulin to keep the wild birds separate.
@@BrimwoodFarm oh good I can stop worrying about sorting out a roof now thank you.
No worries. :)
How many chickens are we allowed to keep in wales?
Im not sure but i think in england its 50 without a licence
I've got 3 chickens. Do all these rules apply?
Hi Craig, yes the rules apply even if it's just one chicken. I wouldn't want to eat a chicken that's died of unknown causes. And Yes, as far as I know, live mealworms bred at home can be fed.
Hey, nice vid! Could you talk about what breeds of chicken are best?
Hi, the kitchen scraps rule seems bonkers to me. I thought chickens were omnivores and scavengers.
It is bonkers. I guess their thought process was that BSE began in cows. So they didnt want contaminated meat going into the kitchen and then going to chickens through contact with scraps. BUT for those keeping chickens at home, I dont see this as a problem. The risk is SO small!
Brimwood Farm: I agree, given people have been feeding kitchen scraps to chickens for centuries I would think any issues would have come to light by now.
@@BrimwoodFarm So its ok for humans to eat BSE contaminated meat but not ok to feed the leftovers to your chickens. That sounds really logical.
Thank you for this video! Very helpfull😊
Glad it helped...I can be a minefield of red tape out there!
I have wanted to keep chickens for years but my council wont allow it, and since we rent and dont own I don't really have a leg to stand on, so make more videos for people like me to watch :)
Paul Grayston where you live ?
Do it anyways you complete slave.
@@ev1677 it's not his house, it's the council's they have the right to impose conditions on tenants. It's only a breach of human freedoms, if you are told what to do with your own property and life.
could perhaps get an allotment?
Can chickens do well in UK weather? Especially in London. Will it be too cold for them?
Yes, chickens do really well. As long as they have a dry, draught free space they can easily survive winters down to -10c.
Thank you for the information. :)
Chickens do really well, my husband delivers eggs up and down the country from Lincolnshire farms, they lay all year round with good care
@@annacopeland8069 good to know that thank youxx
What about putting chicken droppings in your compost heap to make really fertile compost? Does it depend on what else is in the compost/what you'll user it for??
Chicken poop in compost is totally fine. It's more the actual animal that DEFRA is concerned about so feel free to pop poop into compost and manure on flower beds.
most of these rules only apply if youre wanting to sell the eggs. anyway who can police what happens on your land
This is too cool
I think Gov. should keep out of our private lifes!
Definitely, you are not abided to follow these rules.
im not a fan of these regulations but a better safe than sorry aproach is not rediculous
@@UCUCUC27 Yeah, I agree you've got to know the rules, otherwise how are you going to flannel any government inspector that pokes his/her nose in?
Please go and live on an island by yourself.
@@cl4re4d4ms why don't you live in a commie state like China or NK if you want a nanny state to wipe your arse and hold your hand? The UK are going free market capitalist by the looks of their last couple of actual elections/referenda. I believe they don't have a wall yet, do one while you still can.
With regards to feeding from the kitchen, am I not allowed to buy veg specificly for them to chop up and then give them?
You can... as long as you don't cut them up in your kitchen! It's all quite silly.
I'm in my seccond year of farming in the UK now and what can I do about slaughtering chickens to sell to others is it worth getting the licence or just sending them to a slaughter house and if so how do a contact one to take in my chickens and how does it work?
It's pretty hard over here in the UK. Most abbatoirs wont take poultry unless in large numbers. Your best bet is to look at becoming unregistered to despatch for commercial sale at home - though it's a lot of red tape and cost so only worth doing if you're going to make it a core business plan.
Hi do you raise meat chickens
I do, Kieran....with the larger breeds I grow all the cockerels on for the freezer.
I been giving my chickens kitchen scraps for all my life
Why so much regulations when it comes to raising chickens at home, when chickens are raised as mass production without humane standards.
Why can't you bury dead chicken? Why?
I bought some Roosters at £9 for seven and some Hens at £18 for six.

Hi. I have always wanted to keep chicken as pets more than eggs. I am in England. I do not want more than 2 or 3 hens. I am in a small village. Will I need permission to keep chickens?
No, you don't need permission unless you rent in which case there may be something in your tenancy agreement whihc doesn't allow it.
@@BrimwoodFarm some times the deeds say you can’t keep poultry so check that out too
I've always fed chickens kitchen scraps that don't contain meat.. Always...
Can I keep chickens at home in the garden? Do I need permission or a licence
If you're in the UK, then yes. If you're renting it's a good idea to check the tenancy agreement first .
Do you need a license do keep three chickens in a large coop in our garden if we own the house? I want to get a large coop and three chickens just to keep, I don't want to sell the eggs or eat the chickens. I just want to own chickens and look after them.
