A quick tip for hot glue removal. Grab yourself some of that canned air you use for cleaning computers. Turn the can upside down and spray it onto the hot glue. The super cold spray that comes out makes the hot glue instantly brittle so it can easily be chipped away with a screwdriver and or cutters…whichever is appropriate for your particular situation.
Bit late to this fix, but really well done - adapting what you have is a sign of a true maker. Those speakers are £99 now, so it was still well worth attempting the fix rather than consigning to landfill.

I literally got mine replaced by a new one 2 years ago for that exact reason! It feels like you fixed my old get together mini. Good job!
Using micro USB connectors on a device like this is just asking for trouble. Unfortunately you get what you pay for these days and the chinese are experts at cost minimization. Anyway, greetings from New Zealand. I'm an electronics technician with 40+ years under my belt of servicing to component level domestic and professional audio products (and many other things!) and I still enjoy watching others working on things as it gives me ideas. This video was useful to show me what these units are like inside and how to get into one. Not that I have had one land on my repair bench, but it's always possible.
Love the look of these speakers. My brother has an older model that is powered via a barrel jack rather USB. It came from eBay without a power supply and there are various voltages, so getting a replacement is awkward. I recently found him a Marley Liberate Bluetooth mini speaker at the local thrift shop for $5. Big sound for a small speaker, although it doesn’t quite match the larger model for deep base of course.
Yeah, they look really smart and the sound quality is pretty good too. I've been using mine today, very handy to have as a portable device around the home! 👍
The Fit it Fella. Nice that you spend the time and effort fixing broken things. Most things I that see you fix are simple. You only have a few specialist tools mixed with observation and patience. Keep up the good work. Nice
The best part of this was the Shabba Ranks throwback music! Also the repair music you play in the background for this video is the same background music that Arthur Tussik Uses for his collision repair videos. If you’re unaware of his work, you should check him out. An absolute master auto collision work.
Well done Steve .. first fix for the New Year and adapting ports to fit can be a pain. Reminds me that someone should be selling a bundle of different ports with different pin configurations (bit like the bundles of transistors or passive components). Keep up the great work 👍😀
Thanks Chris! I did buy a box of a few different ports, but they are all very similar! Would be great to get a much bigger selection for times like this!
Got one of these. They didn't design reinforcement for the connector or chose a weak connector design. That's why I use a magnetic break away connector and cable. Also, the wood panel on the back delaminates from the rubber, fixed mine. I'm also going to add grates to the speakers since they are exposed. Sound quality is pretty good though.
I used to work for HMV years back, when they acquired the retail partnership with Marley they gave all the staff Marley headphones, they looked amazing but literally everyone's broke within a few months of getting them
Marley is just unique branding for generic chinese rubbish. The same speakers and headphones will appear under other names in different parts of the world.
@@sw6188 I had this speaker for like 5 years play maxed out everyday and the power port just stopped working today cause the prongs are all bent up so u could say it was my fault
@@sixxfinga1864 You may have been responsible for the prongs bending, but if the socket was of a decent size and physical strength (= better quality) it wouldn't have suffered such damage. That's the problem, the USB charging sockets just aren't designed for the constant plugging in and out of the charge plug.
I have to admit when Steve was applying the low melt and it was all stodgy, I was shouting in my mind "You've got flux, use it!". I know Steve know this anyway, great fix as always.
"This is well put together" (Turns out to literally be held down with hot glue) There's something I find weirdly satisfying about putting flux on warm joints and it melts on contact. Dunno what that is.
😁 yeah, the hot glue was fun. I'm guessing it was to stop the ribbon cables rattling around and causing vibration, but it was a bit excessive! I know what you mean about the flux meltage! Very satisfying! 😊
Great vid. Thanks. I have a Bag -o- Riddim where the battery wont hold a charge. Cannot find any vids on disassemble. Marley said once they are charged, must unplug or damage occurs. No notification of a full charge, so over time, mine has been left a few times with the plug in. Consequently, it’s a doner! Have you replaced any batts on the larger unit? Thanks.
Thanks Wes! No, I haven't changed over any batteries, but I imagine it's fairly straightforward if you figure out how to get in there! Good luck, hope you can fix it 👍
If you want to do these micro USB repairs more often, you can buy packs of "most common usb connectors" for $6-$20 depending on how many different types you want. Thanks ebay
I realize this is an older video. But I've watched a long list of your fixes and repairs and it seems a lot of them have bad port connectors. Maybe they need to redesign those ports to be more robust and hold up to a lot more obvious abuse... Thumbs Up!
I know you have a desoldering iron, but have you considered using a spring loaded solder sucker instead of the braid? It's a lot easier to use and quicker too.
Also cheaper. Using braid all the time gets expensive. I have been doing repair work on domestic and professional electronics for 40+ years and the only time I use braid is when I have an IC or some complex part with multiple pins that is going to be difficult to remove from the board. Otherwise I just use a manual solder sucker and have done my whole life. I am considering buying a desoldering station but it's not high on the agenda - I can remove parts quickly with the manual tool.
Great job mate 👍 👏 👌 so enjoy your videos 📹 👍 please keep them coming 🙏 👍 and here to help get your videos out to everyone to enjoy 😉 😀 cheers Steve 🍻 😀

Now that's weird. I have that exact same speaker, only in a different design. But when I opened it up once to properly clean it out (hate sand. It's coarse, rough and it gets everywhere), there was not a single bit of hot glue inside.
Do know how to take off auto shut off for the blue tooth? I use the speaker for my Windows PC and when I am not playing anything I hate how it auto shuts off everytime after x amount of minutes etc. I am running it connected to wall power and not battery.
i don't know if this was a possibility but did you think about changing it to a c type connector. I probably don't know fully if this is possible due to the current differences?
I did wonder if that would be possible, but there wasn't alot of room to play with. Would be so much better with USB C... micro USB always seem to fail!
Get some legal music for RUclips, from the RUclips library or the many places elsewhere! Good fix, I think the whole repair could have been done with just a desolder station and soldering iron, however.
Would the original solder not have come off of underside of usb port by just wicking with an iron and flux and not the other prep? Newb question, I'm sure. Edit: Love the vids BTW!
You could cover over the modified plastic plate with one of those cheap USB-to-magnetic adapters. That way you cover the botch and extend the life of the port with a magnetic connector that wan't hurt the device.
@@JoshuaJoshua0 As an electronics engineer I can tell you that is likely impossible. In fact, since no connector is perfect in its own right, I can't think of any way such damage might occur, but I can't tell you what's right, you can only find out for yourself (or not).
@@JoshuaJoshua0 OK, well let's explain what your fear might be. Without the ground, the positive only is in contact, but without the ground no current can flow and no potential can be established, so you can't burn anything or zap anything.
