I was given my grandmother's Susan Bates Silvalume hooks when I was taught to crochet in 1986. I replaced them with another set of Susan Bates about 15 years ago.. And since then added a set of the soft touch and the bamboo handled Bates hooks to my collection as well. I've tried other styles and brands of hook, but I always come back to the inline style and my Susan Bates brand. Maybe it's just what I'm used to, but I do have larger than normal hands for a woman with long fingers. Which is great when I'm giving a massage or playing piano.. But can really suck when I'm getting impaled in the palm or edge of my hand by the end of a too short hook.
I'm an old clover girl and tulips. I'm so glad you did this video. I really love to hear what my video hosts think about new products. I've seen the Prym hooks and was very curious how they are. I'm very particular about my hooks, which most crocheters are I believe. Thank you Mikie, love to watch your videos.
I love my clovers and tulips as well! I don't like using a metal hook with embossed lettering on the thumb grip! I bugs me no end...so uncomfortable after a few rows. Love this channel and Mikie is a real doll! Lol!
I love the Prym hooks, they’re so comfortable to work with. I want to try the first set you showed, they look like they’d be really comfortable to hold as well. Thanks for the review!
I had seen so many people rave about the Prym hooks, so I bought a couple to try. I don’t know if I got 2 bad batch hooks but they were a nope for me. One hook had zero coating on it. I found both of them were far more grabby than any of my wood hooks and I tried various types of yarn too. I really wanted to love them 😢
I love the shape of the Prym (the orange one in this review), but I find it squeaks, and does not glide at all. Maybe because I'm using acrylic? It's a shame because I truly like the shape 😥
Hi Mikey, thx for the review. I love clover, tulip and the Susan Bates soft handle too. Recently I purchased some Ommi hooks on Amazon, OMG they have a Susan Bates tip and longer handle, they are either resin or wood with resin. Beautiful and very useful, just thought I’d share that. Have a great day.
After using my Clover Amour and Furls streamline hooks for a number of years now I decided to try these Susan Bates ergonomics ones and was pleasantly surprised by them and now working on a project with them. I like the shape of the Prym ones which is similar to the Furls and I have some of their knitting needles. The problem with the Furls is they are wood and will break if you drop them and I have to be careful my dog doesn't try to chew them as well. Thanks for the review of these hooks.
The set you received from Amazon is the ones I use the most. They're also carried at Hobby Lobby under the brand Yarnology. If they make them larger than K I wish I could find them. Thanks for the review!
I started with the Susan Bates but not the ergonomics one. Hurts my hand so I ordered the Prym set. Just wont change anymore ! Love them! And not too expensive!
I have Yarnoligy hooks similar to the unbranded set you reviewed from Amazon. I really like them---except the size wears off from use. And it doesn't really take long for that to happen. I use clear nail polish to coat the size so it won't wear off. i don't know if the Amazon set will do that but thought I'd warn you just in case.
62F. Been crocheting since I was 5. Thanks for the description of how you hold the hook. I’m a pencil holder and only use Susan Bates. Always gives me easy tension and uniform stitches.
I use the pencil hold. Something my grandmother taught me when I was little. I wish I learned the knife grip but I just can't change over lol. But I really love those susan bates hooks. I will have to try the first ones you showed. Thanks for this. 🙂
3:18 - I found similar hooks pretty much identical to your Prym one @ Fabricland for $5.99 on sale, reg $11.99. I use the knife hold as well. The rubber handle is attached to the hard plastic shaft. Even tho I have had these for a few years, the rubber bit does wear away after some time as my thumb sits right where they meet. Then it cracks & bits fall off. (I guess I am too rough on them, lol!) They are wonderful hooks tho & do not cause fatigue in my hands like traditional hooks do.
Boye Ergonomics are the hooks that let me crochet again. Had given it up years ago from joint and wrist pain making it no fun, but saw them at the start of the pandemic in a store and decided to give them a try. So glad I did. Gave me back a great hobby that I always enjoyed and has relaxed my previous death grip and tight tension habit. They are way 'fatter' handles than those Boyds you are showing making them true ergonomic hooks rather than just padded ones. Just think it's wonderful how many kinds there are to choose from nowadays so everyone can find what they need.
I appreciate this video. I've never watched or read a review on needles. I use the old "basic" type, most of them by Boye. Have had them for years. I'm 62 and maybe it's time to look at the ergonomic styles. I haven't seen yr first one. I'll do so now. ❤
Thanks bunches! I recently completed my set of the aluminum/color grips. I also have tried one of the bulbous handles and liked it, too! Most versions of these are available at Hobby Lobby, 50% off about every other week!
Ahh, those Susan Bates hooks are ace! I love in line hooks, and am currently obsessed with planned pooling, and I find the in line style hooks gives me such even tension and stitch work, which is essential for colour pooling. I’m in the middle of a colour pooling scarf right now and am using my Susan Bates hooks. My other go to brand is the Pony Easy Grip hook, which also comes in a set.
I agree. I only use in-line hooks. They are much more efficient and are much easier to go into and out of stitches. And, like you said, they give much more even tension. I have scores of hooks, but not all are in-line. I never use the other ones.
I have found that the old vintage Susan Bates hooks are better than the newer ones. I went on e-bay and bought all the old ones I could. They are all I use.
I started using Susan Bates in the early seventies and still use em today, I love the soft handles really nice. Thanks for the review, I might give Prym a try 😃
I have both the Prym and Susan Bates hooks. I like the Susan Bates for yarn that is splitty. The Pryms length is what drew me to them. I like them but found that they irritate me palm.
Thank you Mikey, I thought I was doing something wrong, the way I hold the hook. I need to use the soft handle due to arthritis, they make a big difference. I lost my 4, 4.5 and 5 hooks. Do you happen to know where can I find just these not a set?
I have had the generic brand for a couple of years now and they are my go to hooks...I have three sets now...one at home, one in our trailer and one in vehicle!!! The only hooks that I use a relaxed hand with...not sure what to do with the ones I'll never use again?!?
The Amazon hooks they sell at hobby lobby..I got a whole set on Amazon for 11 bucks with stitch markers and notions,,those bates hooks I like too..the Prym co makes Dritz notions..from Germany,,I love their knitting needles. You will find the Pryms are for wool and wool blends,,the stick to some other yarns..Prym is the oldest company in Germany...so Arne and Carlos say..👍
I had one furls and it rolled off the studio table on the first day I used it and broke in half. They don't have any thumb grip to know it's orientation. So I cannot look away and watch TV as I crochet with those. I don't want to review those hooks as they aren't for me and and I know people love them but I cannot use it and keep the speed of my crochet. They are american-made, so I don't want to impact people's jobs by posting a negative review of that.
Bagoday found a guy who will make custom handles if you send him your your hook that are super ergonomic n outrageously beautifull! Problem is they are outrageously priced too. $125 or more a hook is outrageous to me anyway.
I love the Susan Bates ergonomic hooks. My favorite go to. Thanks for your review. You are the bestest💜
Thanks Michelle.

I love the Prym knitting needles, great for my arthritis. I do have the one hook and enjoy it, but it’s a bit long for my hand.
The set you received from Amazon is the ones I use the most. They're also carried at Hobby Lobby under the brand Yarnology. If they make them larger than K I wish I could find them. Thanks for the review!
These are my favs! Wish they came in bigger sizes too
I would think about buying larger sizes as well.
I started with the Susan Bates but not the ergonomics one. Hurts my hand so I ordered the Prym set. Just wont change anymore ! Love them! And not too expensive!
I'm super glad you found a hook you love.
@@TheCrochetCrowd since I am a beginner. Do most people keep a hook with each project?
I have Yarnoligy hooks similar to the unbranded set you reviewed from Amazon. I really like them---except the size wears off from use. And it doesn't really take long for that to happen. I use clear nail polish to coat the size so it won't wear off. i don't know if the Amazon set will do that but thought I'd warn you just in case.

I mean Bates, not Boyd lol.🙃
Thank you for sharing your meaningful testimony here.

Thank you the review Mikey. Not an in-line hook fan but the other two interesting. Also a knife holder, can’t hold in pencil grip any longer.
My pleasure.
I love my PRYM ergonomics crochet hooks. 🥰

That's a really interesting perspective. Maybe it's been my hook that prevents me from planned pooling success. I never considered that.
@@TheCrochetCrowd Give it a go! I’m currently using a Susan Bates size I hook with Caron Simply Soft Camo (Blue Camo) and it’s working beautifully.
What is color pooling?
I have several of the plastic prym hooks and they are smooth like butter. I like them a lot and they weren't expensive.
thanks so much.
I started using Susan Bates in the early seventies and still use em today, I love the soft handles really nice. Thanks for the review, I might give Prym a try 😃
You are so welcome!
I have both the Prym and Susan Bates hooks. I like the Susan Bates for yarn that is splitty. The Pryms length is what drew me to them. I like them but found that they irritate me palm.
Thank you very much for the information. I love the same crochet hooks.
Glad it was helpful!
JoAnn's sells a set of the Prym hooks. Michael's has them individually.
Oh that's interesting. We don't have JOANN here in Canada so I hadn't seen them before.
I like the Prym but it squeaks and grabs the yarn. Maybe because I use acrylic? I don't know but its a shape, because I love the shape.
I just bought bamboo ones, thanks for the bloopers!
I'm happy to share outtakes once in a while.
@@TheCrochetCrowd you are a breath of fresh air Mikey, I will master this, we will make an afghan one day. Thank you kind sir!
If only the Prym hooks came in 5.5mm - bizarre that they missed that size out!
Too funny! I bought a set & thought I had lost my 5.5! Now I know why I can’t find it
Oh that's interesting.
One type I use is those Susan Bates! I enjoy the handle.
Excellent.
Thank you Mikey, I thought I was doing something wrong, the way I hold the hook. I need to use the soft handle due to arthritis, they make a big difference. I lost my 4, 4.5 and 5 hooks. Do you happen to know where can I find just these not a set?
hey Mike can you suggest pointed head long shaft crochet hook for bulky weight yarn i also have arthritis in my thumb joint thanks
Just today I was thinking how I hate that squeaking sound the yarn makes now I how to stop it Thanks.
I have had the generic brand for a couple of years now and they are my go to hooks...I have three sets now...one at home, one in our trailer and one in vehicle!!! The only hooks that I use a relaxed hand with...not sure what to do with the ones I'll never use again?!?
Makes sense. I tend to leave hooks behind so multiple sets makes sense to me.

Is that last hook plastic? I have only ever used aluminum ones. The plastic ones I had (different brand) squeaked. It was annoying. lol
I have the Hobby Lobby brand ones like the plastic one, it doesn't squeak, it glides really nicely. Really smooth.
The yarn materials cause the squeak. If you rub your hook with bar soap it will lubricate it up.
Thanks Crochet Crowd
Thank you so mach
Most welcome
I really don’t like the Prym hooks I found the yarn stick on it like glue maybe it’s just mine !!??
Oh that's interesting. I wonder why.
I personally don’t like susan bates because the length of them aggravates my wrist. Also the handle is too thin for me to think it’s truly ergonomic.
That's the neat thing about us humans, everyone loves something different.
