There are so many people who mod the devil out of these starters and mechanisms in hopes of making it function. Most fail as quickly as they are put back together leaving damaged gears and broken hairpin retainers. Thanks for sticking to basics. Hope it helps many solve their problems.
Thank you! I bought a Virago 750 that seems like the starter spins but does not crank the flywheel, i have a feeling the issue is with the bendix. I am going to take it apart this week and see. Again, thank you so much for your instructions!
Great looking build friend! Thanks for your videos! I'm beginning the process of reviving an 84 virago that's been sitting for a long time. With only 8,xxx miles on it it does not need any major engine work but the starter is problematic and the fuel system is in need of a serious cleaning and rebuilding.
Great Video! Really detailed explanation of the information that matters without dragging it on for too long. Thanks for the Video it really helped me understand the starter motor of my Virago 535
Pep: have a nice day, in my experience, I use a Electrical Tape 3M, +33, is for me, the best product in market for this jobs, I believe that any tape does not give the same, and this are very confiable in time, and us are not looking electric system every day, i think that a job well done keep the failures away. Your videos are awesome and very explicatives, a real guide for a personal project. Regards from Copiapó, Chile.
WONDERFUL, PROFESSIONAL, PEDANTIC AND RESPECTFUL WORK REALLY!!… VERY EDUCATIVE VIDEO AND IT HELPS ME AMAZINGLY MUCH! NICELY EXPLAINED, UNDERSTANDABLE I THINK FOR EVERYONE AND FIRST OF ALL, FANTASTIC JOB WITH THE MOTORCYCLE! 👍 SO I JUST WANTED TO GIVE YOU MY RESPECT REALLY FOR YOUR WORK! TO WISH YOU SUCCESSFUL FUTURE, KEEP GOING THAT WAY BECAUSE YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB AND YOU HELP TO EVERYONE WHO WATCHED YOUR VIDEOS! Thank you and best regards!!
It’s funny the emphasis on the spring. I removed mine completely on my 81 and upgraded the starter motor to a 4 brush. Starts great now and no problems. Hopefully doesn’t do any bad damage down the road. But yeah, no spring in mine
Great Video! I am working at it at this moment. Still not sure if i should place one or two clips. Bougth a new one so I can place the old and new one.
Hello Chiefpep, Me and my grandpa are having issues getting the starter out of our Virago. Got the bolts loose and we can wiggle it. But we still cant get it out.
I am maybe considering to buy a 1985 Virago that sat for more than 20 years after having starter problems. Wonder if I will be able to figure it out...
I believe I have starter issues. It cranked over fine yesterday. Now just clicks... possible solenoid?? Either way the virago has a fault with the starter. But alot of detail and useful information on this video. I will have to watch again for future reference on potential problems. Great video man
Manana Fizzbitch Hi Man, yes it sounds like battery, I'm in same predicament but have done extensive research now and understand the weaknesses of the system. That's why they changed it in later models. The thing is to make each component work perfectly and you will understand it all.. There are no short cuts but start with the battery. Then lever arm grease. Then bobbin loosening a little ( behind cover plate) to see if that allows it to engage. If it does chances are it's old battery not giving the initial impetus to get engaged and lock the Bendix in.. After that check brushes in starter motor overhaul. Best Buy a kit before you start so you are not waiting for parts.. Cheers Geoff
@@geoff3656 If you replace your battery, go for at least 360 cold cranking amps (cca). Look at the specs of the battery for this figure. And best is to buy a LiFe or LiPo battery. These give these amps in any circumstances. Good luck!
Chiefpep Hi CP one last thing I noted on my starter, was that there is a small removable T shaped flat shim plate that locates the starter to the engine casing body... If you didn't put this in place then the starter long bolts are the only things stopping the starter rotating in its bedded position. Do you know the plate key thingy I'm talking about? I can send photo.. Geoff
Thanks for the explanations , very useful. It 's the first time when I see two circlips (circ springs) on the gear idler 2. Maybe someone has it made previously - good idea for extrapower, no need that small aftermarket clip, with the shape of the number 9.
Marius C In some exploded views for instance on cmsnl.com you also see two of the clips... The gear also is prepared for the clip. But you need maximum torque on you starter motor to get through that resistance with the tips I give in de video. Good luck!
I know there are two clips, but one for starting motor gear (nr.1 in exploded view) and another one for mobile gear (nr.7 in exp. view). I have never seen two clips mounted on the mobile gear. Gear is prepared for one clip, on the side with cover.
Marius C I understand what you mean. In my video there are a total of three clips. But the two on the second gear suppose to be there hence the two sleeves in the gear which seem to be there for the clips... Anyway, in this setup I always succeed. Perhaps it will work with one clip on this gear aswell...
Hello. I love your project. I just bought myself a Virago xv750 already caféracer style. And yep, still some issues with the starter. I want to try to put this ground wire on it as you explained, but I have some issues figuring out how to connect it at the end. I watch your other videos about wiring... but I'm still not sure. I understand the part from the starter to the frame. But you also say to connect it to the minus of the battery. Do I plug it in line? (Starter - frame - battery) or (Starter - battery - frame)? Do I split the wire at some point? (Starter - I split the wire- then one side goes to the frame - the other side goes to the battery)? How do I connect it to the battery? (Directly on the negative pole of the battery)?
Chiefpep ho thanks a lot... I guess I missed some parts of this video the first time I've watched it. Also, I've found a pretty convenient fix for the starter engine that has been highly suggested to me by a mecanic, but I think you haven't work on this specific piece. There's a link: ruclips.net/video/393yL3BIaDU/видео.html
2 clips on idler gear , im not sure this is correct , 90468-29106-00 x1 , 2 clips may case to much resistance for small return spring , which i have found is not needed , left of the gear has very much better contact , but your other starter information is totally correct , i have done these mods on my own bikes over the years , although you dont need to use much grease on the planet gears , over time it mixes with carbon dust / rust etc and becomes like gritty paste and slows every thing down, even making for bad internal electrical contact (brushes ).
Well the grease won't end up at the brushes... But true that too much grease is not good. For the rest this fix always works at my bikes so I don't see a reason to change it. But I always say: do what works for you. And if my fix doesn't solve it, I hope people dig in these comments to find other ways like your tips. Thanks!
But one more thing I have to mention, the better the gear stops, the easier it will flip back on the worm wheel... A modification a lot of people do is tighten that clip with zip ties and stuff or by a new one to make sure it's tight around that sprocket... This is basically a mod which assures the same...
i always measure spring tension with a hand help spring scale , the same as you measure head sock bearing resistance . this is how we were instructed at factory training .
In later Virago starter clutch generations the clips as well as the compression springs are abandoned as redundant. Even more, the compression spring was the cause of problems with starter clutch because it did not allow idler gear to fully engage. On the other hand it is redundant because the lack of rotation (when one stops starter motor) there no centrifugal force in bendix and this gear returns back on its own.
Could very well be. For me the method I use always works... Everybody who solves the problem with whatever modifications they make has got a solution! So if that works for you, don't change it!
@@maxisbored If you change your oil filter only, put it on the kickstand and no oil will drop out. Perhaps one, or two drops that are on the housing of the cover, not more. And leaning the bike to the side, you can remove the cover without losing any oil. But then you have to be careful not to lose any tiny parts or a screw.
David MacGregor Hi David. No I've ordered every bolt and not seperate. That is, when I disassambled the engine, I've put every bolt or nut I wanted to renew separate. Then measured and counted the amount how much I wanted to order them. I order at rvspaleis.nl. I did this with my first bike and just ordered the exact same order for this one since the engines are the same. Saved me a lot of work ;) I mentioned this in one of my first video's. The video where I search the internet for parts and order a whole bunch of stuff.
Hi David. I would love to share it with you. I hope the following will work: The thing is, the company could search in my order history. They re-ordered this for me. So, I don't have a specific list with all the nuts and bolts but!: I do have the invoice number. So what you could do is send them an e-mail (info@rvspaleis.nl) and refer to this 'factuurnummer' (invoice number): factuurnummer: 2017-25432 This is my invoice number. You can mention that mr. Schoemaker ordered this. They should see the exact list of all the nuts and bolt. Please note that there are some nuts (not much, I think around 8) which are not the right ones. These should have had 'fine thread' instead of normal. But I wouldn't worry about that detail. The total sum was around € 80,- if I remember right. Ok?
I love this channel! clean clear and video sound and quality are good!! I need somme informations, I lost the spring, and i can't find the good informations to order it. In Yamaha schematics, it doesn't apprea! Thanks for helping from France!
David Romell Hi David thanks! Well the gaskets are just complete rebuilding packages which I buy aftermarket online (In Holland that's Roukema). It's a set which includes every gasket of the XV 750. The specific parts like the spring or clip I mention in this video would come from cmsnl.com It's the famous supplier of Japanese MC spareparts. Bearnings, screws and nuts and all come from different shops. Does this answer your question?
Hey chiefpep I was wondering if you could help me with something. I had removed both side covers to replace gaskets and I must have wrongly placed two alien bolts and I don’t know what sizes each one require could you maybe help me find an exploded view with bolt sizes pretty please?
The clip on the gear stops the gear spinning before it engages the flywheel. If the clip is worn/loose the gear spins and grates against the flywheel and makes that dreadful grinding noise.
Chiefpep and I’ve never seen one with two clips like yours. Would like to see a close up of the gear as it must have a mounting ring on either end. I think you may have the only one in the world. 😄
Clive Hancy Clive Hancy No. Same as all my other engines. They all have two ringgrooves since the sprocket has no front or rear. Pause the video and you'll see. Just order another clip and snap it on...
Chiefpep Unfortunately I can’t send photos here otherwise I would show you that the Yamaha parts diagram only lists one and all the three gears (I have some old ones) only take one clip. Plus you can see on other videos here and on google images.
Another great video Chiefpep! Thank you. I have been through most of this myself with my Virago build but one thing I could not find were the long allen head starter bolts. May I ask where you sourced yours from?
Hi Chiefpep, thanks for all your videos, they are really helping me out. I got a virago starter problem myself (who doesn't). I'm ordering a ballistic battery as we speak, hopefully that will help getting the starter to turn. Worked my way through 3 batteries in 2 years :-). Already found that my alternator needs more grounding, so thanks for that tip as well! Anyway, I tried to contact you via your website but the email could not be delivered. Would love to get your view on a view virago electrical issues, if you feel like it. Thanks anyway and keep posting your videos!

Chiefpep, I too only have 2 total clips on my 81 XV750. The clip on the starter motor is also too small and does not fit into the casing as first show. As like everyone else, mine only has 1 clip on the idler gear. To convert to how you've done it, are those 3 clips you use all the same size/part number? Thanks.
Hi Artifact. No, the clip on your starter engine gear is of a smaller size. You can see here what you need, and which partnumbers: www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-xv750m-virago-1983-d-usa_model8942/partslist/C-01.html#results . You see two of PRODUCT NUMBER: 9046829106 on your Idlegear.
Maargoed, it's the result that counts' en alles wat goed is is nu eenmaal duur...
From 1996.-on there's no compression spring in starter clutch any more. It was avoided in newer engines. Before 1996. this spring was here as presented in this video.
The superseded part # idler gear has no spring. It’s also spiral cut at a very different angle and reworked to not breed the spring. Removing the spring on the older gears set can lessen the grind IF the gears aren’t too worn, but chiefpeps instructions are a better long turn fix.
Could you tell me where you purchased all your new bolts for the starter and case? I would like new ones also. Great video! I subscribed and will keep watching your uploads, thanks!
Thanks! Since I've had this question so much, tackeled this in this video: ruclips.net/video/i548Yz8FeCs/видео.html at marker 14:30 furthermore I made is easier for you all to order of as I explain in the same video. Good luck!
I have a question about removing the spring. Is this problem due to the compression spring being worn out? Will buying a new compression spring also resolve the issue. Instead of leaving it out completely?
Hello There Chief Pep, Question for you please, are you ever going to do another motorcycle restoration like you did on the Yamaha Virago 750cc ?? Please respond. Thank you.
Great great video, thank you. Greetings from Spain, two questions, what is the piece you put below de bendix? Is this a magnet? Where can I buy one, and a new spring, I can't find online store, thank you again.
Hello ChiefPep! Just returned from garage where I tried to put the ground wire from starter to acc on Virago VX1100 under the right side of the engine as you described.... But after placing it I understood that the wire stays too near the exhaust pipe and there is no space to place it inder the metal holders that keep the positive wires to the starter... Did you had same problem? What if let the ground wire go on the left side? Tks
I don't know the engine of a 535 so I darn't tell... The idea of a strong first crank due to the powerfull battery and straight ground wire sure will help!
Hey. I keep reading that another good starter fix is to just completely remove the spring and it works much better. Have you heard of this and what do you think of that idea?
Alex Fluckiger I've heard that indeed. But I always wonder: are the engineers of Yamaha so 'stupid' that they designed this mechanism like this? I don't think so... It's all a matter of: everything just has to work really well and instantly. You can only manage that by having everything really, really clean, well oiled, and especially well powered. You saw how my engine started like that in the first time right? This was no coïncidence. My previous bike was done exactly the same way. Trust the mechanism and convince yourself that every starter part is clean (and that also includes the complete starter motor like rotor and satalite gears) not (too) worn, strong or new (like the spring and clips) and you have at least 360cca on your battery. And then the straight thick ground wire and others as I stress in my video's. Then you will be good.
Chiefpep Yeah I saw your videos. I will do all that and I was curious if they were that stupid but they did design this entire system stupidly so ya. I’ve been in the fence on whether I should leave the spring out but yours has never made that box of rocks sound since you installed it the way you did? One more question while I have you. I’m installing my ride side engine cover and was putting in the oil cover. Do you remember. Does the oil filter cover have two o rings that go on it? Also, there is a small gap when it goes against the side cover. Is this normal. I understand if you don’t get what I’m talking about. If not. I will email you pictures. I just want to be 100% sure everything goes back together right. Thanks for all your help.
Hi Alex. No my bikes don't make these noises because of the measures I take. There are several and the combination makes the difference. Leave the spring in. It's there for a reason. Otherwise things will 'wobble' in the side. Concerning the rubbers: At these sort of questions I always walk up to my garage and have a look at the shoprepair manual of Haynes. It would be a good idea to buy one of these if you do an intensive rebuild. I sometimes doublecheck with the original exploded views like you find on CMSNL. Here is the link for your specific question: www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-xv750-virago-1982-c-usa_model8890/partslist/B-02.html#.W3ZpW-gzaUk So you see two rubber rings. The cap stands out because you haven't tighten it yet with the allan bolts. Also always make sure you use the right amount of Nm at these bolts. Because if you break your threat in there, you have a little problem. This specific spot it typically a spot where you (or previous owners) might use too much force with tightening the bolts and break the threat... Good luck!
Chiefpep Alright thanks a lot. I’ll leave these spring. You’re a smart guy. I didn’t think of the wobble it would have without it. The Haynes manual doesn’t show anything about the oil cover. But I’ll check out the link. Thanks a lot
At 3:28 you put in the very thin large washer. In my starter it is below the planetary gears (the first thing to go in before the outer gear and the seat with the groove on which it nests). I haven't been able to find a parts diagram of that part of the starter to verify which is correct. Do you have access to a parts diagram? Thanks!
Nick Kaplan Yes. Go to cmsnl.com find your bike and go to the part where the starter motor is part of. There is an exploded view of everything. Best site ever...
I've got an 1100 Virago that doesn't have the spring in the Bendix and I've heard so many times that Yamaha got rid of it. Why do you believe that the spring is a must when everybody else removes the spring with much better results? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Kind regards from Thailand. Mike
Because I believe more in the engineers from Yamaha then 'everybody on the internet'... If they got rid of it later on (didn't know that, where can I find that info?), they probably made modifications elsewhere to make that work...
maaf mau nanyak cara meng haluskan ger penghantar dari mahnet menuju dinamu gi mana? soal punya saya ger pengantar nya dari mahnet menuju ke dinamu bunyinya kasar ?
Joshua Tambauan definitely! This will be an important topic. I will do a bare bone scheme. Don't know when though... Maybe I will do it in two video's. First one the preparation second one the actual installation.
One of the most asked questions and therefore in the Q&A video ruclips.net/video/i548Yz8FeCs/видео.html at 14:32 and in many of my video's in the description. I think you mean with pitch 1,25? That's most of them (also known as fine thread).
@@chiefpepdesign If he only wants to fix the starter, or put new brushes in, it's possible. Once the two bolts are out, you get access to the brush holder and also to the planet gear.
It's a bolt which oftel leaks. Yes you can just replace it but measure which length you need. You don't want it too short otherwise you will break the threat inside and you need the torque to keep the cap closed. Rather a bit too long with some seal rings to make sure oil doesn't come out via the hole.
Wouldn't do that. It's hard to put it back that way. You need to align the gears. Just lay the bike on it's side. That way you won't need to drain the oil. And buy a manual. Very handy for everything!
Opened up my project bike today to investigate the reported starting issues and noticed none of the 3 clips on the gears you’ve shown. Is that an issue?
@@JAKWEES I don't know exactly about the XV 1000. But a lot of people delete the clips with the idea the starter would run better. But the opposite is the case... You can order the clips on cmsnl.com
RUBBER PLUG Hey... I just saw something.. When you put the magnet in the slot was it meant to be located with the rubber plug you found later to stop it rattling ?..?..?
A 12 cell Lipo battery. Unfortunately Ballistic doesn't exist anymore. So a alternative is this one: antigravitybatteries.com/products/starter-batteries/restart-oem/atx12-rs/ Always make sure you use 360cca (cold cranking amps) batteries(!)
Hey pep, going by the Haynes manual its showing something sits on top of that starter gear toward the case. Beside the bendix gear. Am I missing something? There is also a range fork that Is supposed to be on that gear stack (chapter 8b-20 in Haynes manual)
I think we might have a different Haynes manual. But on page 8B13 you find an exploded view (in my book. Probably you find such a view near your pages aswell) on that view you find every piece which is exactly what I install accept for the extra clip I put on. What you are what goes to the engine housing is a ballbearing (sits in your engine) and a collar washer which is very important. You see it in my video aswell... Sorry but those are the pieces you need.
Hi Chief, I 've been replacing almost entire starter mechanism on my xv1100 1998 (3lp) thanks to your intructions. I replaced the starter bendix, clutch and the starter motor itself, but my motor still does not spin with the spark plugs installed. I can rotate the engine manually so I can tell it is not a seized engine. Been checking wirings, conections ground points etc and tryied even an 80 Ah car baterry (connected directly to the starter motor and solenoid) but still no joy. The motor spins without both spark plugs, spins with the front spark plug on and the rear out but not spining with the rear on and the front out. I was cheked the timing and while the rear cylinder looks ok the front cylinder punch mark is like 15-20 degrees behind (counterclockwise) from the alignment mark. Do you think Is that missalignment causing the issue or I should be checking something else? Thanks for your advises!
Mis allignment sounds really plausible. Please refer to the workshopmanual how to do it. Though, I also have a video about it when I install the cylinders. Be aware that there are two marks on the flywheel. Easy to make a mistake there...
Dear Chiefpep, Thanks for this clear video. Just starting out with my own repairs, you're taking away a lot of doubt. If you don't mind me asking: An o-ring dropped to the floor when I pulled of the left engine cover. Looking at drawings, I suspect it to come from the clutch (Number 11 in cdn1.bikebandit-images.com/schematics/schematics/yamaha/yam002/4678_22.gif ). Or would you happen to know where it might be from? Kind regards, Wouter
Thanks for the info Michael! In that case I have sealed the cover with the O-ring in the wrong place. The clutch is still working smoothly though and there is no oil leaking from the engine. A bit strange to know about this incorrect ring while driving but I'm not too worried about it.
@@chiefpepdesign I searched for one;couldn't find it with a 2 clip deal on it. I like it ,because it may stop it from wobbling into the flywheel. You see, I have a serious problem with mine. The idler keeps getting chewed up within just a few cranks. I think the gear is wobbling into the flywheel. I'm gonna check on replacing the whole assembly.
I am building a xv920r yamaha and it sounds like a box of rocks being crushed, do you know how to fix that? Or what piece exactly needs to be fixed or replaced?
Ooff. Hard question... Does is sound like 'rocks' at the start? That's normally the case... And then it's the startermechanism which could be anything in the whole mechanism. Try to search at the Viragotechforum for exact answers. I always do so myself aswell!
Chiefpep thanks, I've found a few videos where they make shims and such. Just wondering if there was an easier way! Way to go on the videos I've almost watched all of them! Won't be as miticulous as you when I rebuild. But i want to get riding it asap.
That's always a struggle. To be honoust, I love building bikes but I am looking so much forward to just finish this one and get my time back... But, I can not let the build quality suffer under that feeling so I try to keep up the standard. But, this is always a struggle: time versus quality... Good luck with the starter!
@@chiefpepdesign thank u. It belonged to the shifting gear. Takg the old gasket off the crankcase cover, stator side. I noticed there were nicks in the cover. What can i do? I am tryg to bring alive a 1981 Yamaha XV 750.My first moto.
@@user-cw4bb7cy4t You can try to gently make the surface flat again. Put some sandpaper on a really flat surface (for instance a glass plate) and sand it down flat again. Then put on a new gasket. Otherwise try to fill it with liquid gasket but that won't be very durable.
I don't think so. But I don't really know '92 1100's... I don't even know any bike that has a heat sensor which causes bikes to stop running when turning too hot...
There's no heat sensor that would do that. When electronic gets hot the resistance changes and soldering points could have a connection problem/ cracks, or your TCI has an issue. But it could also be the pick-up or and a bad connection to it. It's only a two-wire connector that comes from your engine and goes to the TCI, make sure that the contacts acre clean and tight.

I've made several video's to answer them all. Please also scroll under these video's to find most of the answers. Otherwise find answers on the several dedicated Virago forums. If you still have a question, after all these attempts, then place your question under the video that doesn't answer your whole question.
hello sir. i have virago 1100cc. and 12years did not use because of my starter damage. my question is. is there posible to fix my bike if i will buy this starter rotor?
Chiefpep the all starter. the one who have magnet. i think i need to buy new one. because i totally damage. the storage of my bike also not good. tnx you sir for the reply.
Where can I order parts for this same engine , I would like to replace the Hardwear and gaskets as well , also I live in Canada soo the would need a site that will ship parts here
You mention that there really should be two (2) of the LARGE black retaining clips attached to the Bendix assembly, and you often see only one on many bikes. However, every parts schematic I can find only shows one (1) large clip and one (1) small one. Your assembly has three (3). Did you add a third because you could, or did Yamaha somewhere decide the second large one was not necessary?.. But would really be better with two? Example: images.cmsnl.com/img/partslists/yamaha-xv750-virago-1982-c-usa-starter-clutch_bigyau0866c-1_34f4.gif Thanks.
Yes, I ad one extra. It's a fix I invented myself. A lot of people try to make the E-clip tighter in many different ways by squeezing it or put wire around the end to really make it fit as tight as possible around the gear. I just ad one clip extra to let the gear 'break' faster.
@@chiefpepdesign Thanks!.. Will source a 3rd one. Also, which gear on the crankcase side is likely to be worn down? If I'm going to open the whole thing up, I want to have all parts ready. So it's the gear that the magnet is designed to catch shavings from?.. Or can more than one be worn out? : @t
@@chiefpepdesign Hey Chiefpep, thanks for the added insight. Because your starter was nearly assembled (after painting the casing), I have a question... I "rebuilt" my starter turbine by changing the brushes, gaskets and cleaning the attenuator contacts. Is there any lubricant that should go in the chamber with the magnets before I seal it up? Or should it stay dry and just lubricate the spindle points? There was a lot of dust in there, but little "grease."
Have you also took out the bolt behind your clutch lever? You have to lift the lever to access it. After that, tap the lid gently with a rubber hammer or alike. It should come off.
There are so many people who mod the devil out of these starters and mechanisms in hopes of making it function. Most fail as quickly as they are put back together leaving damaged gears and broken hairpin retainers. Thanks for sticking to basics. Hope it helps many solve their problems.
I’m in total agreement with you, I am so glad I kept looking. I couldn’t justify the modifications.
The most instructive video I’ve found
Thank you! I bought a Virago 750 that seems like the starter spins but does not crank the flywheel, i have a feeling the issue is with the bendix. I am going to take it apart this week and see. Again, thank you so much for your instructions!
Did you manage to solve the problem?
Great looking build friend! Thanks for your videos! I'm beginning the process of reviving an 84 virago that's been sitting for a long time. With only 8,xxx miles on it it does not need any major engine work but the starter is problematic and the fuel system is in need of a serious cleaning and rebuilding.

Hi Nick, what a find mate.! 8 k is nothing ... It must of been waiting for you :-)
What is it exactly ? 750. 1000. .?
Great Video! Really detailed explanation of the information that matters without dragging it on for too long. Thanks for the Video it really helped me understand the starter motor of my Virago 535

Ran the ground with 6gauge (AWG) and it works great. Only time will tell but for now, thanks
But where? Did you run the ground from the battery to the starter? No one has a specific diagram for this

Fantastic video mate. Thanks so much for sharing this and for the brilliant explanation and dedication! Brilliant!
It’s funny the emphasis on the spring. I removed mine completely on my 81 and upgraded the starter motor to a 4 brush. Starts great now and no problems. Hopefully doesn’t do any bad damage down the road. But yeah, no spring in mine
Awesome information I'm about to pick up a 94 model hopefully starter is good
Thanks for such a great video! I'm about to dig in to my starter on my bike!
Great! Thanx a lot for your excellent videos. J/Sweden
Thanks for this good and instructive video, mate! I really appreciate that.
Great Video! I am working at it at this moment. Still not sure if i should place one or two clips. Bougth a new one so I can place the old and new one.
Follow the whole procedure and you will succeed!
thank you for the video I have 2 viragos and both have issues starting...
Georgedemex Hi George. Have you tried all the tips and tricks I told in this video?
Awesome video brother, loads of details and information 👍😊
Hello Chiefpep, Me and my grandpa are having issues getting the starter out of our Virago. Got the bolts loose and we can wiggle it. But we still cant get it out.
Excellent video and very informative, thanks!
I am maybe considering to buy a 1985 Virago that sat for more than 20 years after having starter problems. Wonder if I will be able to figure it out...
Very helpful. Thanks so much.
I believe I have starter issues. It cranked over fine yesterday. Now just clicks... possible solenoid?? Either way the virago has a fault with the starter. But alot of detail and useful information on this video. I will have to watch again for future reference on potential problems. Great video man
Thanks! Sounds like a too weak battery and ground issue. Good luck!
Manana Fizzbitch
Hi Man, yes it sounds like battery, I'm in same predicament but have done extensive research now and understand the weaknesses of the system.
Cheers
Geoff
@@geoff3656 If you replace your battery, go for at least 360 cold cranking amps (cca). Look at the specs of the battery for this figure. And best is to buy a LiFe or LiPo battery. These give these amps in any circumstances. Good luck!
Chiefpep
Hi CP one last thing I noted on my starter, was that there is a small removable T shaped flat shim plate that locates the starter to the engine casing body... If you didn't put this in place then the starter long bolts are the only things stopping the starter rotating in its bedded position. Do you know the plate key thingy I'm talking about? I can send photo..
Geoff
@@geoff3656 If it helps keeping the starter in place and keeps it from rotating, then great! I don't know the plate...
Brilliant video Thanks
Jeff Cote exactly. Starter, frame, on top of that an extra wire to battery. See this video: ruclips.net/video/JuuIr4zOgoM/видео.html
At around 9:00 minutes is prepare the split point
Chiefpep ho thanks a lot... I guess I missed some parts of this video the first time I've watched it. Also, I've found a pretty convenient fix for the starter engine that has been highly suggested to me by a mecanic, but I think you haven't work on this specific piece.
There's a link:
ruclips.net/video/393yL3BIaDU/видео.html
Hey chiefpep, how much Torque do use for the Sidecover Bolts and the small Caps?
Just on feel. It doesn't need a lot of Torque. I believe something like 25-30 Nm. Torques only available on small toque wrenches.

Is it true that I can lean the bike on its side and access this without taking my oil out?
100% true!
@@maxisbored If you change your oil filter only, put it on the kickstand and no oil will drop out. Perhaps one, or two drops that are on the housing of the cover, not more. Another useful and well made video, thanks. Where do you order your engine parts, is there a complete kit of the allen bolts for the cases?
David MacGregor Hi David. No I've ordered every bolt and not seperate. That is, when I disassambled the engine, I've put every bolt or nut I wanted to renew separate. Then measured and counted the amount how much I wanted to order them. I order at rvspaleis.nl. I did this with my first bike and just ordered the exact same order for this one since the engines are the same. Saved me a lot of work ;) I mentioned this in one of my first video's. The video where I search the internet for parts and order a whole bunch of stuff.
I remember that - any chance you could share your list so I can order from dutch supplier?
Ok?
I have A xv920 that would this bolt list carry over?
Yes for sure. You can use 95% of the list. Rest is good to have as spare ;) Just follow the instructions as above!

Hi, very good video as always.....I wonder where you buy all the engineparts like gaskets bearings bults and clips?
David Romell Hi David thanks! Well the gaskets are just complete rebuilding packages which I buy aftermarket online (In Holland that's Roukema). It's a set which includes every gasket of the XV 750. The specific parts like the spring or clip I mention in this video would come from cmsnl.com It's the famous supplier of Japanese MC spareparts. Thanx for a great video 👍 A question - where do you order parts for a virago?

The clip on the gear stops the gear spinning before it engages the flywheel. If the clip is worn/loose the gear spins and grates against the flywheel and makes that dreadful grinding noise.
Clive Hancy exactly

Chiefpep, I too only have 2 total clips on my 81 XV750. The clip on the starter motor is also too small and does not fit into the casing as first show.
Maargoed, it's the result that counts' en alles wat goed is is nu eenmaal duur...
I've seen were you take the spring out which Yamaha had no spring in it's manual.
Bruce Hamilton interesting...

I have a question about removing the spring. Is this problem due to the compression spring being worn out? Will buying a new compression spring also resolve the issue. Instead of leaving it out completely?
Buy a new spring always. It really helps (imho)

Tks
It doesn't matter where the wire goes or runs. As long as there is an extra ground wire.
Incredible footage!
Does this work in 535 Virago?
Thanks
Chiefpep
Yeah I saw your videos.
Good luck!
Chiefpep
Alright thanks a lot.
Is it unecessary to use gasket sealant when you install the new gasket?
Yes
I've got an 1100 Virago that doesn't have the spring in the Bendix and I've heard so many times that Yamaha got rid of it. Why do you believe that the spring is a must when everybody else removes the spring with much better results? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Kind regards from Thailand. Mike
Because I believe more in the engineers from Yamaha then 'everybody on the internet'... If they got rid of it later on (didn't know that, where can I find that info?), they probably made modifications elsewhere to make that work...
is therean o ring that goes some where with either starter gears or stator like on the gearb shaft
The only rubber O ring I know is around the starter motor which makes sure the starter motor seals in the housing.

One of the most asked questions and therefore in the Q&A video ruclips.net/video/i548Yz8FeCs/видео.html at 14:32 and in many of my video's in the description. I think you mean with pitch 1,25? That's most of them (also known as fine thread).

Can you pull and replace starter without pulling off the outer cover?
I don't thinks so...
@@chiefpepdesign If he only wants to fix the starter, or put new brushes in, it's possible. Once the two bolts are out, you get access to the brush holder and also to the planet gear.
@@sisaketmike That's true
hey is the bottom oil filter bolt special? or can i replace it with any m6 bolt?
It's a bolt which oftel leaks. Yes you can just replace it but measure which length you need. You don't want it too short otherwise you will break the threat inside and you need the torque to keep the cap closed. Rather a bit too long with some seal rings to make sure oil doesn't come out via the hole.
Which size gauge ground wire would you recommend? Will 10 gauge work?
Yeah. For that main first I believe I even use 8 gauge. But 10 is perfect
Can the starter come off without taking off stator engine cover. No manual
Wouldn't do that. It's hard to put it back that way. You need to align the gears. Just lay the bike on it's side. That way you won't need to drain the oil. And buy a manual. Very handy for everything!

@@chiefpepdesign what model and engine code is this one, might help tracking down that specific gear, thanks
@@zero-cy5gc The bike is in a showroom now so I can't check...
@@chiefpepdesign yes i've seen it, and I think I will refering to it a lot to do the job, thanks Chief!
Dear Chiefpep,
Thanks for this clear video.
Kind regards,
Wouter
Wouter, when you opened the left engine cover, you'll not drop an o-ring from the clutch. Some, or most Bendix have an O-ring at the end.
Thanks for the info Michael! In that case I have sealed the cover with the O-ring in the wrong place. The clutch is still working smoothly though and there is no oil leaking from the engine. A bit strange to know about this incorrect ring while driving but I'm not too worried about it.
Do you have a video that shows how to change a one way bearing? I just subscribed to your channel big help
Nice work.
Where did you get a double clip idler gear?
To let the idler gear to stop faster
@@chiefpepdesign I said (where) did you get it?
@@chiefpepdesignthe 2 clip idler gear, where did you get it?
It was allready on the bike @@leroybrodian
How did u keep your bendix to stay pushed in and mine only came with 1 clip,do i need 2?
2 is better. If you press the bendix it will stay in place. One way to do it is to use a metal ruler to keep it in position... But I never used it.
What is the thing called that u put in first? It has 3 ball bearings
I'm sorry I don't know what you mean. If you go to CMSNL.com you'll find an exploded view of every piece. Including the names and order numbers.
Otherwise try to fill it with liquid gasket but that won't be very durable.
would it be a good idea to replace and put back together these parts in a cold garage? lol
When left idling is there a heat censor that turns my 1992 yamaha1100 virago off when it gets hot
My virago killed 2 new battery’s is this the cause ?
Idk
I’m Hoping Someone Can Help! I’m Rebuilding An 81 Virago 920 And I Cant Find The Two Bolts That Secure The Starter To The Engine Block! I’ve Searched Online And I Just Can’t Seem To Find Them , Any Help Would Be Greatly Appreciated
Where do you buy bendix and starter parts in europe?

If you still have a question, after all these attempts, then place your question under the video that doesn't answer your whole question.
Does the 1100 Virago have the same starter motor as the 750 ?
I don't think so. But my theory on how to let your starter motor function better goes for all bikes.
Chiefpep Thankyou, and im going to subscribe, i like your clear informative videos, regards, Steve, Bournemouth uk.
The Gen. II 1100 Viragos have a different starter with a much longer shaft.

hello sir. i have virago 1100cc. and 12years did not use because of my starter damage. my question is. is there posible to fix my bike if i will buy this starter rotor?
If the starter motor is damaged, then yes, it would help to replace it. I don't know what's broken?
Chiefpep the all starter. the one who have magnet. i think i need to buy new one. because i totally damage. the storage of my bike also not good. tnx you sir for the reply.

Yes, with this video.
Anyone have any idea how to put in the starter motor? I took it out and I can’t fit it back in because of the spring clip
Do the spring clip afterwards
Where can I order parts for this same engine , I would like to replace the Hardwear and gaskets as well , also I live in Canada soo the would need a site that will ship parts here

Hi, where you order new bendix spring? I need that too!

@@chiefpepdesign Thanks! :)
Example: images.cmsnl.com/img/partslists/yamaha-xv750-virago-1982-c-usa-starter-clutch_bigyau0866c-1_34f4.gif
Thanks.
: @t
@@MFMauceri Yes, that one. The other one is the alternator... Trust me, you don't want to order a new one of that one... 😉
@@MFMauceri no, no lubrication at all needed. It needs to be Nice and clean That's all. A good blow with your aircompressor would be great!
I took all cover bolts off and anything in the way and the cover doesn't want to come off
Have you also took out the bolt behind your clutch lever? You have to lift the lever to access it. After that, tap the lid gently with a rubber hammer or alike. It should come off.
