Thinking ahead and planning can be really overwhelming sometimes. I was blessed by nature with an extra week of beautiful weather! Good thing too, it's taking far longer than I thought to get everything indoors. My Pomegranates Hahaha! They were dormant all summer because it was so cold. This warm spell woke them up and they all leafed out!
Dam, you see why bonsai enthusiasts have lots of trees at different stages, for sure keeps you busy thought out the year. Thanks for the info on autumn pruning, I’ve always just left them till the next year, now I know for some trees I have a little window in the next couple weeks. 👌
You can never have too many varieties Tom! I started doing more Autumnal work 3 years ago as it was the only way I could stay on top of Spring stuff. I have gained a lot fo confidence following the advice of Harry Harrington who is a big advocate of autumnal repots for many varieties. The pruning can be done on nearly all the deciduous stuff. Cheers
Great to know what to be looking for and getting on with.... have a few cuttings and seedlings..I'll have to sort something out for this year as well....
Glad you shared your chores. The information gave me a good map for my own late autumnal chores. But, I got tired just watching you. You'll be "as busy as a one armed wallpaper hanger." You will be so busy, "it will keep you off the streets and out of the bars." OK, enough! Thank you for the teasers about upcoming videos. I look forward to each one/series as I have so many questions for each variety you talked about. And, I won't believe you the next time you say you don't "have any bonsai". You have so many that are just a clean up and a repot away from being show ready. But you will have to hustle if you think you can get all that done and take a week for goofing off. Thanks for inspiring us all. And I look forward to the Tony Legacy video. I miss him!

It is a shame that it has beomce so much more difficult to legally send trees into Europe. Hopefully I can keep developing the ones he passed on to me :)

Old post I know Xavier but a quick question about the garden centre winter wash you’re using, do you have to cover the pots and soil with cloths or towels when spraying so it doesn’t run into the soil, like you do with lime sulphur, similar to how Tony Tickle does it? (trying to avoid this as Ive got young children who get interested with what’s on my bench and it’s quite harmful stuff!) TIA love your videos and all the stuff you teach 😊
This video is nice Xavier. Loads of niews too. Did you do something different in editing / taping that caused this to jump off? Your kids have aphids and need winterwash? You only wash your kids once a year?
No idea Jelle - I was probably trying to make soome silly comment that may have been lost in translation. There is one editing point that I know I had to do a clumsy cut with. All a big learning exercise :)
I stumbled across a large nursery in Bedford that had a section full of imported bonsai. They use to get loads of 'low quality' material. In 2017/18 I was able to buy a lot of stuff which included lots of tridents at £20 each. They haven't been able to repeat this since the restrictions back in 2020/21.
thank you for the knowledge Xavier. I never really had a good pre winter task schedule but you have given me loads of food for thought! I was also wondering if you ever sell some of your pre-training stock and where they can be purchased?
Hopefully I will continue to do those every 2 months. I have quite a lot of material in the back garden and do sell sometimes to visitors. I find packaging and sending stuff is so much more costly these day that i rarely do that now. Are you looking for anything in partiuclar?
Hi Dave, I have my Access Work flow System designed by my daughter. Absolutely brilliant for record keeping, task reminders and anything else you might want from a bonsai app. Last count was over 760...
Great video. Y is it that u think u lose branches on the larch when wired in the winter? How big are the branches? Have u ever heard of silica or used it before its a liquid to help roots get through extreme environments like the winter that im gonna start using now in oct.
I do hope these ‘think ahead’ vids become a permanent fixture, Xav, they’re so interesting n useful. We’re hardly into Autumn down here; no colour on Acers nor Beech, I’m hoping for an ‘Indian Summer’ actually, to extend the growing season even further! This is kind of my least favorite time of year for bonsai. Many tasks, but less cool stuff going on with the trees. Our climate isn't great for fall color. With the exception of liquidambar and some of our maples, our fall color is just tan and brown. And we're prone to weird heat waves with Santa Ana winds, so fall repotting is a little dicey. So it's mostly work - fall fertilization, cleaning leaves, cleaning pots, organizing and planning (I have to mark so many trees for repotting next year), and not as much fun. At least winter doesn't have much work.
I am in Grantham in Lincolnshire (nearer to Notts borders). I left them out for the first time last year and lost 10 of them so I'm going back to making sure they get the cold frame. Cheers
