    Really useful know what to look out for to do before hand rather then missing the chance to work on things seeing videos late.

      I realised that the backlog of videos i was showing gave no opportunity for people to follow my example if that is what they wanted. I also missed the Mugo candle pruning window which I know several people were waiting for. I will see if this goes down well and then do the same in another month.

      I wish! I can't find it either and am now considering spill absorbant options. Everything is going up in price too. I have invested a bit of money in traditional bonsai mix that can be reused like pumice, zeolyte etc

      Sometimes leca or expanded shale is available at acceptable prices. If you crush the leca lightly it's a good addition to the substrate normally used.
      But don't use too much, or preferably only in the bottom half of the pot. Leca is very light and will float to the top just like perlite.
      It's an aquired taste but I use it from time to time.

    Thank you!! I love this 'planning ahead' theme! I grow many species from seed and mostly learn trial-by-error - will be a lot more productive understanding what to do when - and why!

      I may do this more often because I recognise some of my videos come out a lot later than originally intended and are less useful to anybody following my experience.

      No worries - I was the same until I started to do more research with some of our better known experts. I watched a lot of Mirai and my 'go to' website for species in the UK is Bonsai4Me - always seems to be spot on. It also makes my life a lot easier knowing I can spread the repot load around the year a bit rather than tryign to do it all in a 4 week window :)

    Xav, I think you're right, planning ahead is always a good idea. Problem is different projects come along, I end up buying more trees, I dig up things from the garden or collect trees from different places and all of this delays and pushes back a lot of jobs.
    I have a lot of jobs to work on, but also have another collaboration and then an upcoming challenge. So plenty to work on. Problem is finding the time to do it all.

      @@XaviersBonsaiRetreat yeah it is a shame I did the same thing years ago and it’s like they are to nice to leave in small bonsai pots 🌲
      I’ve had a few problems with slugs eating a few leaves this year with all the bad weather in Dorset rain etc .
      I noticed a large green maple scalped by slugs yesterday .
      I have a lot of trees to attend here and don’t remember pruning that one back .
      Luckily they don’t eat the bark or buds only leaves it would appear .
      It will be fine I think just looks smaller 😃🍁🍁

So I take your advice to let them grow and not repot until next year. Some birch cuttings on the way as well. Can’t wait to create some forests. 😄 Thanks and enjoy your day 🙏😘 Cheers 🙋‍♀️ Martina

    Thank you Xavier for this, One of the things I find hardest is having an organised calendar. i'm only 6 years into the addiction, and I tend to just check on my trees reguarly and inspect them, have a rough feel for what needs repotting, and do most of the deciduous trees as the buds start swelling/opening, and the pines/junipers in September!

    • @XaviersBonsaiRetreat
      @XaviersBonsaiRetreat  Год назад

      Sounds about right to me. The biggest switch for me was a few years ago when I started to do all my maple branch pruning at leaf drop. I do the same with other 'higher sap flow' trees. I try to move a lot more to autumn to give me more time for spring repots and stuff like that. All the best

    Good useful video Xav. I’ve a couple of air layers on the go - one has some roots, the other doesn’t appear to have any. Should I cut the one with roots now and pot, or leave it a few weeks? What is the optimum time to do this? Also when I’ve chopped it off can I start another air layer on the same tree or leave it till spring to do? Cheers

    • @XaviersBonsaiRetreat
      @XaviersBonsaiRetreat  Год назад

      I am waiting for at least another week BUT if there are lots of roots alreadyn in the bag then seperate it now. As for the other, leave it and check again beginning of Sept maybe. I would wait until spring for the next layer - unless it is a juniper.

      @@XaviersBonsaiRetreat thanks Xav, very helpful. When I’ve chopped it should I trim some of the branches down to give it a better chance of survival or let the leaves fall naturally in the Autumn - they’re already turning red, it’s a sugar maple.
