Still getting helpful tips from this 7 years after it was made and with a very different camera
Rob you are a life saver i was fighting with the manual instruction to find out how to operate the NW 564 EX for two long hours then i decided to check on youtube and here you are after only 20 minutes **success** everything works my D7100,cybershots h70,HX50V, rx100 3m...,MUHAMAD ALI WOULD OF SAID,YOU ARE THE GREATEST! Thanks again for your patience AND THE SHARING.
Fantastic masterclass. Thank you.
If anyone is following the tutorial with a Canon 70D, and you are having problems locating the "Flash Sync speed in AV mode", that's because it is not located in the custom functions. Instead, when in AV mode, you will find it in the second menu (not the spanners) under Flash Control.
Hope this helps.
Hi Rob,
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I have learned so much, I'm so excited!!! I've been photographing for years by have only recently bought this flash upon your recommendation in an earlier tutorial you did. Thanks ever so much!!
Thank you so much for this! I've been looking all over for instruction videos for Yongnuo Flashes and yours is by far the best in explanation and demostration! Will come back to this video often :D
This is by far the best video I have ever seen on this subject. you've done a great job. Thank you very much
Thanks so much this works also for new versions as mine (III). So a complete, clear, starter but advanced guide.
Great tutorial. As a amateur with my first DSLR and flash this got me up and running in a "flash". Thanks.
+GenoFelice Thanks!
one of the best videos available on youtube for Yongnuo YN-565EX TTL flash
This would have to be the best video about flash photography I have seen so far 👍👍
You can't imagine my joy wen I found this tutorial. I bought this flash off a friend who said it's complicated. I was lost with the instruction. On finding this vid I also discover your using a 600d which I have too. I'm made up. Well explained .Thank you
Lot to think about and mess with. I was looking everywhere for the manual to figure a few things out but this helped thanks
Habitualmurph No problem, glad you liked it!
Thanks Rob. I bought this flash for my Canon T3 a couple years ago. Wish I had thought to look on RUclips for help back in 2015, because I was LOST. Flash has only been used one time, but now it's out of the closet and back on the T3!
As a complete beginner I need to watch this video a few more times as there is a lot of information here. I thought (yeah) stick the flash on the camera and away you go. I thought this was a long video and was another one that would go nowhere, glad to say I was wrong. Great video and a very clear broadcasting voice too. I liked and subscribed. Ta very much.
Rob, excellent video as the rest of your channel! Thank you for doing this one, it's very useful! :)
My whole life in this 1 video! 👍🏻👍🏻Thanks so much this video was sooooo helpful!
I recently purchased a new Canon Camera with a Yongnuo Flash. That was an excellent review Rob, nice presentation
Rob,
This is an excellent review / tutorial, and I thank you having taken the time to do this. I just purchased a YN-568EX but I believe most features are the same as the 565EX. Your demonstration of this unit is far better than any instruction manual could EVER offer. I look forward to viewing more of your videos. By the way, you would make an excellent school teacher. Your instruction/demonstration is clear, concise and you hold the viewer's attention quite well.
That's very kind of you to say, thanks!
I agree with Rob ^^^ I find I lose interest with many photo clips on you tube - many waffle and waffle and make an item that could be conveyed in 3 minutes go on for 8 or 9 mins and witter away for 2 mins saying nothing before it starts.
Today I've gotten my very first external flas and it's the one you're using in this video. Although I'm having a pretty good grasp on how to use my Canon 1200D, using it with an external flash for the very first time turned out to be a bit confusing and intimidating at the same time. So, naturally, I checked if there are any tutorials on the subject on RUclips... and I can't tell you how happy I am that I stumbled onto this video of yours. Straightforward demonstration of basic capabilities capabilities of the flash, clear demo of how to set it up with the camera under different circumstances and a calm, consiste and to the point narrative. Most importantly, you seem to treat the viewer as an attentive, mature student and not talk show public in need of entertainment.
Great material and attitude, Mr. Nunn. Thus, both thumbs up from this viewer and now also subscriber of your RUclips channel.
did all the modes work in canon 1200d?
What a great, informative video! I've just purchased the Yongnuo YN-565EX II to go with my Canon 750D. I'm I'll be referring to your video many times! Thanks Rob
+HARVEY SCOTT Thanks for watching, and enjoy your new flash when it arrives!

Hey, my pleasure. The tissues are in the post!
+Rob Nunn 😂
Very helpful video--took a lot of mystery out of flash settings and triggers. Many thanks!
+Michael Cohen Glad you found it useful!
It's really very useful video especially for a beginner like me. Thank you so much sir.
Glad to help!
Hi,
I have just received the Nikon version of this flash and although some of the menu's are not exactly the same on the camera, this helped me a lot! I am an amateur (first time with an external flash)photographer looking for something to add that little extra to my Christmas photos.
This tutorial helped me understand the basics of the different modes
Really helped me out! Thanks!
+Rob Ackers Glad to help, thanks!
A good review and tutorial. I have YN560 IVs in my kit. Have had some issues not being able to do TTL with them. Going to have to pick up at least one maybe two. I do a lot of shooting in varying light situations. One of the things I like about the Yongnue units is the ability to adjust the flash on the fly. My Canon flashes sit on the shelf because they are more involved in adjusting the output. For those that have not experienced the Yongnue flashes, the right and left buttons adjusts power up and down by full stops, The up and down buttons by 1/3 of a stop.
THANK YOU SO MUCH SIR. I'VE LEARNED A LOT. YOU'RE A GREAT HELP. GOD BLESS YOU.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for making that so simple! I've always hated the idea of using a flash. Now I'm kicking myself :( Good information!
+Shellybzyb Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video!
Great Tutorial, very useful, thank you
Very interesting. Thank you. Great presentation
Found this really useful, thanks!
this is such an essential video, thank you
Hi Rob, Really like your videos! Very informative and interesting to watch. I've been agonizing over which speedlite to get for my Canon 600D, and watching this video just pushed me over the threshold. I just bought a YN-565EXII because of your video. I had been thinking about the bigger and more expensive Yongnuos that have master capability, but the 600D already has that, so this looks like the answer to all my needs as an amateur/family man/listing junk on eBay photographer. Who knows, if I keep watching your videos, I may learn enough about all of this stuff to actually be able to make enough money from it to pay for all the new toys I'm going to want to play with! Thanks!
+hds181 No problem, glad you found the video helpful, and trust me, that flash will transform the look of your photographs, especially your portraits. The fun is about to begin!
Hi Rob, I have a YN560 III Manual flash and using a Canon 700D / T5i. After watching your video and following your instructions I manage to trigger the YN560 III Manual Flash and use it for off camera flash photography. I am so excited about it & Thank You so much for that. I am also considering purchasing the YN-565EX TTL Flash for its auto capability.
You profile picture.... Your taking a photo. Yet you have your rode mic on top. Why are you taking a photo with a rode mic on top. Thats just so silly.
+Tony Ng Keng Glad to have helped, and full auto is a great feature to have!
Very very helpful video, thank you very much!
Thank you for the informative video! It helped me a lot!
Thomas Lee Thanks for watching!
It's August 2019 and I just received up my Yongnuo 565EX-II today; manufactured in 2017. There are lots of newer flashes from Yongnuo but I stuck with this one because I also have an old bridge camera - Canon SX50 HS (circa 2013, purchased in 2016), and the 565EX line was confirmed by another SX50 HS user as working properly in ETTL with it. Many flashes won't talk to this camera and I'd be stuck in manual flash, giving yet more to concern myself with. So this was a proven pairing. The 565EX-II is sturdily built, first off. Like too many flashes though, the amount of resistance to close the battery cover is worrisome. I pump the AA batteries up and down to wear in the spring metal and reduce the push back against the cover. Those little closure hook tabs are very prone to snapping, not a risk that's unique to any particular brand.
So far I'm very happy with the image results after an hour of messing about in a dimly lit room loft. I have a small strap on softbox to experiment with as well. All in all, I'm eager to run through the settings and be ready for future shoots. Mostly now I'll be doing stone and metal sculpture in galleries and homes. I photographed musicians in clubs and restaurants for a long time with typical dark ambiance so I wish I had the proper flash rig for that. Now I do.
Being a Brit Rob, I hope you've heard of The Yardbirds. I have a cool pic of me with founder Jim McCarty but we look like twin walking dead because I had no flash - in a night club. Disappointing.
Sorry for the dithering comments, but thanks for the hands on advice on this flash; just so you know that over 4 years later it is of value to someone.
Charlie
Thank so much for this great tutorial ...
+Chijioke Ezeh Glad to help!
Very informative! Thanks!
+Shannah Brown Thanks for watching!
Great review..
Thank you, good info!
+Zodstone Thanks for watching!
Hi Rob, I've just got my Yongnuo YN568EX II ..... I haven't been out and about with it, But like you say "INSTANTLY" I can see the difference from using the fixed flash on my camera to using the Yongnuo YN568EX II I know you are reviewing the 565 ! and I have the 568 but their pretty much the same, My one isn't as loud as yours... Thankfully lol.. Thanks again for more helpful tips.... Keep making them your helping sir !!
Glad to help!
Very good review
Excellent class! I would love to see more in depth flash functions, do you have anyother video? I really thank you for this video! Best wishes from Uruguay.
Great video!
+Giang Vu Thanks for watching!
one millions thanks Rob. this video is the best introduction to learn the basic about flash world. I learn more thinks in 39mn . thanks thanks thanks
very nice video. thanks
+Dan Davis Thanks for watching!
Thanks a lot ..very helpful :)
Thanks for watching!
Great video Rob!!! I have a question. Do I have to every time change setting in my camera to easy wireless when I want shoot in the slave mode?
Amazing Amazing vid.
Great video. If I bought more 565ex flashes could I use them all together say on different light stands and just use a 565 ex on the camera to fire them as long as they were on slave 2 channel 1. Or would I have to get a flash trigger to go on my canon camera and if I had to buy a flash trigger will any yongnuo flash trigger work with the 565 ex11
Very nice review. Unfortunately my YN565EX has felt on the floor and battery cover is damaged. Reflection board and wide angle diffuser felt out from their compartment. I manage to find spare battery cover but have problem how to reach inside the diffuser compartment. It is over flash head and seems separated, but I am afraid to employ force to detach it by screwdriver or knife. Do you know what is the right way to remove this cover. Thank you.
Very informative, thank you so much Rob.
i'm a photography enthusiast, have never used a speedlite, planning to get one.
was wondering whats the different between the 565ex & the 565ex ii?
+Alex Lovely I think it's just an update to the rear screen, check this link: flashhavoc.com/yongnuo-yn-565ex-ii-now-available/
Thank you so much Rob & if you can help me out with one more thing here, i would like to know about the batteries for this product, was told to get a lower power (mAh) as that would help in the flash's recycle time, is that true?
I don't know about that, I would have thought getting more powerful batteries would make more sense, more power, faster recycling, but I could be wrong.
ahh yes that would certainly make more sense :-)
will get more power. Thanx a lot once again.
Have a good one ;-)
Hello sir. As im new to dslr (not for commercial use) want recommendations, should i buy this for my canon 700d or any other alternative as for best use ?
Does ETTL of YN-565 work with D5 mark III? Have you tried YN-565 as a master and maybe another from YN as well as a slave rather the built-in flash? Thanks for the video:)
interesting great video :-) i think about YN-565EXII for Canon 700D. Do you have any experience wit this tandem?
+CZARNYEU I haven't got one of those I'm afraid.
Rob Nunn thx 4 answer :-)
Rob, I have a SUNPAK DF4000U which is identical to your Neewer 565EX. All the buttons and features are exactly the same. I presume they are both made by the same manufacturer. Question that I hope you can answer: How do you turn the BEEP on/off? Somehow I turned mine off and can't seem to get it back on. Any ideas???
My one of these broke the other day. I had to send it back to china to get it repaired. Hopefully they repair it otherwise its a waste of £15 quid.
I have brought a Shanny 600 in the meantime. That seems a really god flash.
gareth jones I'll have to check them out, thanks!
Hi, Mate I am a complete novice so maybe you could answer this question. I want to use an umberella to soften the light so will the flash still trigger inside it when using the camera flash to trigger it?
In the world of Yongnuo, red is a strong colour wheres as green is passive - in the west, red is a warning colour (stop) green is the affirmative (go).
My YN-565EX has stopped working late November 2016 after 3 years.
Ah, fantastic explanation, thank you very much - the choice of colours always puzzled me!
Hi I have a Canon 70d and a YN-568ex-II. On camera it works well but off camera it massively over exposes the photo, any tips. Many thanks and great video :)
+Keith Cleverley Put the flash in manual slave mode and turn down the power, is something you could try first.
Bought the Neewer Speedlite NW565EX this year and I have Canon SX60 HS. But the flash makes noise and you can hear all the time that the flashing is adjusting. Can you help with the noise please? Can the continuous adjustment of the flash spoil my camera?
Can we to HSs inYN 565ex II with YN622c trigger+ Canon 600D? any hack? Please advise.
Many thanks in advance
Hi, I am using Canon 2000d and I have Yongnuo flash YN 565EX with a YN560 TX Pro trigger can you please help me on how to get the flash and the trigger connected
Any idea if this works with a canon 80d? I assume it does but would be hrlpful to know for sure. Just started looking into flash photography.
Lily Bloom It does indeed!
Have a quick, and probably stupid, question. Following your instruction I have my Canon 70D and Yongnuo 565exii working as expected. If I understand correctly I make my ISO/Aperture/Shutter setting on the camera, the camera then sends a pre-flash to tell the flash now to set itself up and how much flash is needed. This all makes sense but since I can add a diffuser, bounce the flash, or turn the flash to aim backwards and up, how does the flash know how much intensity is needed. Is this just trial and error?
+GenoFelice Every time you take a photo with the flash, it'll send out that pre-flash to set the exposure, no matter where you point the flash or what you modify it with. The exposure value is worked out by the light coming through the lens of the camera - that's why it works so well.
You help me a lot but i can't configure it with my Nikon D5300 for Slave shoot
Hi does it have a built in receiver? Can rf603 trigger it?
I´m looking for some E-TTL (automatic, right?) for my canon 70d and I´ve come to the final choice:
Yongnuo YN-565 EX TTL
Yongnuo flash YN600ex-rt
Yongnuo YN-568EX II
Which one should I buy?
tattotoro If any of them do hi speed sync, go for that one. If they don't, look at the Aperlite YH-700C: ruclips.net/video/KPjWExSjUiA/видео.html
Is there any way to use slave mode without popping up the built in flash?
Is 1/200 the maximum shutter speed or it can do faster? Because the pop-up flash's maximum shutter speed is 1/200, too. Please answer because I am looking to buy this speedlight soon.
Luka Gjurić The maximum shutter speed you can use the flash at depends on your camera, not the flash itself, unless the flash has high-speed sync (which the YN565 does not have.) Check your camera manual - most dSLR's are fixed below 1/250th of a second.
If you have to go faster, then you must get a flash like the Aperlite YH700c: ruclips.net/video/KPjWExSjUiA/видео.html
Thanks, Rob.
Luka Gjurić
Hi, I beleive if you push the Q button while the pop-up is raised then
use the scroll wheel to high light the flash symbol on the back of the
camera you can change the exposure without having to keep going into the
camera menu to do so. If you want the camera to go higher than the 200
shutter speed built in you would be better off buying triggers along
with a HSS flash (ie. YN568) that allows you to do that and even then
the max on the 600D is 4000.
Hello could someone please help me with my youngnuo speed light yn560iv I couldn’t find how to activate face detection
hi, how many rf-603 ii do i need to shoot remotely this flash?? With my YN-560III just i need one rf-603ii conect on my cam, but with YN-565ex I can´t do the same. My gear: Nikon d5100. Thank at all
+Lucas Romero Not sure on that one, haven't used the rf-603 ii's.
how do u trigger the flash wirelessly without using the inbuilt flash of the 600/650D
You'd have to add an RF transmitter to the camera, and a receiver to the flash, like Pocket-wizards or the many cheaper alternatives.
Is Yn565exii work on 6d ?? Plzz answer me sir..
It should do.
are the functions same as EXII version?
plz tell me.the best speedlight under $65 to $70.
hi sir i have canon 700d 565ex ettl work?
How do you use the modelling light on the 568ex11
Not sure on that one, maybe it says in the manual.
i need your help... i have a canon t5i, I will buy a Yongnou flash... which model could be the correct for me?...please...help me!
Diana Herrera Go for the YN565EX version I or II (Canon version). That'll give you automatic flash, on and off camera, and manual modes when you need them. Cheers, Rob.
Thanks
does it work with canon 80D
is this the best yongnuo for a canon 760d?
+Mileina Cruz It would be good, but also check out the Aperlite YH700c: ruclips.net/video/XOXNt8hFYdg/видео.html
Hello: Quick newbie question. I have a Canon 70D and a YN-565EX speedlite. Problem is I want to take indoor group photos in normal house lighting. How do I focus accurately? I can't seem to get the camera to give me good focus without adding a bunch of lights. Since I tend to take photos at parties with a lot of people throwing lights all over the place is always an issue. Thanks
Make sure you're just using the centre auto focus point, it's the most sensitive, but you may have to make sure the AF assist light is on the flash - it's a pain for people to have the red light shinning in their faces, but if you want autofocus, it's a must in low light. A good alternative is to switch to manual focus, use a tight aperture, around f/11, pre-focus on something you can see easily, then always stand about that distance from you subject.
It work with canon 250 d?
the yn-565 ex II works on canon 70D?
thanks
+DK Pro Channel Yes it does.
thank you!!
how to set slave off? i cant do it :(
I can't seem to pull the diffuser out, is mine defective?
+9to5
Same issue here. I barely can take it out. Very frustrating.
+Ferenc Mokány It can be tricky.
hi is it compatible for canon d1200?
+christian ikutanin Yes.
Amazon says discontinued by manufacturer.
+sdnative I think the Mk II version is now available.
You do realize by now that you don't need the pop up flash to trigger the strobe, right? You just need a trigger. The 565 has optical wirless system like the 560 IV.
Myke D Great info!
+Myke D Just got an eos 700 and a 565. This is all new to me. So if I want to fire the flash without the pop up what is the trigger?
Is this the same as the Neewer one? it has the same model.
+Gershon Dharmanandan I've read Yongnuo is one of 3 top aftermarket brands. Another being Nissin. Neewer is not one of them.
rkgsd yeah, but I think the neewer one is the same as this, just branded differently... I'm not sure tho...
The flash is shit, mine broke after overheating, the yn568 is great though, it has protection for overheating and it's also high speed sync and it turns 180° both ways
Can I make videos with this flash??
Does this flash suit Canon 700d?
+Sajib Sarkar It would be fine.
+Sajib Sardar Yes it suit it well..I have Canon 700D and am using YN-568Exll and YN-565EX ..
Good video , I couldn't make hide nor hare of the instruction booklet. who cares what camera your shooting the video
there's a strange low noise rumble on your audio and a noise gate going constantly on and off, quite annoying, try to fix that next time 😉
