Basically the thing about rookies in the NHL is that they can be as young as 18, so when you have someone taking a run at a rookie or laying them out with a huge hit, it's basically a fully grown and physically developed adult going after a player who just barely qualifies as an adult human being. Which often results in one of the rookie's teammates who is ALSO a fully grown and developed adult coming to their defense.
Go dance ballet, then. If you're 18 and in the NHL, I'm pretty sure you're not going into a game with pseudo goons fully unaware or thinking anyone is going to go easy. The pay is good because you may end up retarded after game 2. Same goes for most professional sports.
@donlahaye1340 Ya but even if he does run around taking cheap shots and deserves to get leveled his teammates will still stick up for him just because. @AdamCouser hockey ref here. I'm currently working on my application to the NAHL. The reason we don't break up fights immediately is for our own personal safety. When breaking up a fight we either wait for a big enough lull in the fight or for the fight to go to the ground.
3:39 The refs understand that there is "The Code." If you throw a nasty hit on someone, especially the rookie, you have an invoice to pay. The refs don't jump in immediately because that invoice comes due and you need a walloping, as well as they do not want to get a stray fist in the face. They let the bill be paid, and when the player clinch up or one goes down, the fight is over and they get in there to break things up. Notice that after the players clinch up, the one in white pats the one in red (the offender) on the back as in "you've squared up your bill, good fight, now let's go sit for a few minutes and then get back to playing"
Even i practice fighting sometimes. I ditch the glove, blocker, and chesty in a fraction of a second before I square up with some fool of a forward. On Friday my 45 y/o puck saving self caught a 4 for charging/roughing, 5 fighting, 10 for the game ejection, 1 game suspension. That 25 y/o kid will remember to keep his head up crossing the blue line from now on, even if it's just the goalie in front of him. My team said the fight was a draw, my face tells me I head butted his fist too many times and that is not a good fighting tactic.
I know you're worried about fingers getting cut off by skates, but it is extremely rare, hardly ever happens at all. What you'll notice is that when a player's hand goes to the ice they will automatically make a fist and put their wrist on the ice (keeping the hand off the ice) to ensure that an errand skate does not cut the fingers. I've been in quite a few hockey fights myself and there is an unwritten code that you try to protect the player from any series errand injury (other than punching their face). There are a few videos out there of NHL players saving other players from injury, such as catching their head so they don't hit their head on the ice, etc.

I love the way you are getting familiar with certain players in the league now. It's way too long to do a video on, but if you watch this stuff for fun on your own, you might want to check out ESPN's story Unrivaled on the Avs vs Redwings rivalry for most of 96-03 and the Avs began to decline and the Wings moved to the other conference. It's the rivalry games in the NHL where there is true animosity between the players that often result in some of the most spectacular hockey of the year. Both in terms of players absolutely jacking up their level of skill/perfomance but the legitimate hatred percoloates and legit bubbles over into scrums and nasties elevating the stakes, the tension and sheer exhileration that results in 60 full minutes of jacked up skill combined with rock 'em sock 'em hockey.
Played competitive hockey from age 7 to about 28, never been in a "fight" but multiple scrums where punches were thrown. Lost 1 tooth , and have 3 scars on my face from high sticks. Have had 3 diagnosed concussions (possibly another 2 or 3 that were not diagnosed), 1 hyper-extended knee, one broken rib (from a blocked shot)and one badly broken wrist from getting hit into the boards from behind, was about 6 ft from the boards at contact.

I fought most games from triple A midget hockey till my senior beer league years, only lost a couple times convincingly, never lost a tooth but had a broken orbital socket once. Lol
You've done a lot of hockey fight videos but I don't think you've reacted to any of the videos explaining THE CODE, the rules about fighting. My favorite is from Ninh Ly's channel " THE CODE - The Unwritten Rules for Fighting and Retribution in Ice Hockey"
Fighting serves two main purposes. #1 to keep the sport safer by policing cheap hits to a large degree #2 to fire up/motivate your team if they aren't playing well
You have to go to a hockey game!!!! Get tickets close to the glass and you'll be on top of the action. It's harder to follow the puck on TV, and these guys are fast and strong as hell. I've only been to a few games but it was great.
It wasn't a "don't hit the rookie" moment, but there's an amusing video online of Trent Frederic of the Boston Bruins getting into a fight in his first NHL game. His parents were in the crowd cheering him on and high-fiving. (There's even another video of his dad screaming like a lunatic, because he was wearing a mic.) It's too short to react to, but it's titled "Trent Frederic demolishes Brandon Tanev in first NHL game" on the "SPORTSNET" RUclips channel.
The reason as to why you don’t hit the rookie. Is because the rookie is considered the youngest child on the team and if you hit the rookie you better defend yourself.
Have you been to a NHL game? If you have not been to a game, you really need to. You can’t get a real appreciation for the speed of the game until you see it live.
The reason there is fighting in professional hockey (always has and always will) is because it's basically the only sport where the players self-govern themselves. If you try to take fighting out of the game all that will accomplish is encourage a storm of cheap shots and corresponding injuries. Most of the time, fights are a response to something that happened earlier, maybe even last year (but probably in the same game). Break the Code, and someone must pay a price. Usually it's just 2 guys throwing bombs until one is subdued or they both get exhausted. Once the grievance has been addressed usually both sides let it go. This is much better than having an on-going series of slashes, stick jabs, etc. that never get to be answered by any other means than corresponding cheap shots. No one wants to see that.
The referree's don't want to get hit so they wait to see if they will stop on their own, if they don't then they help them out. NHL is the best to watch there is always action.
You should check out Jordin Tootoo highlights. He was absolutely vicious in the NHL in the early 2000s. He had some of the biggest, hardest hits out there. He was also an amazing fighter who fought literally anyone.
In high school I almost got in a fight in a hockey game. Last game of my senior season I took a hit to the head from the other team's dirtiest player. I decided not to fight because I was in the running for a $1,000 scholarship and if I got a misconduct penalty then I'd be out of the running. I did get the scholarship so not fighting was the right call lol.
prior to hockey , i was practicing muay thai for almost a decade + other various martial art sports. the guy didn't knew , beer league , he was pissing me off whole match , once it culminated , i broke his jaw , eye socket and nose... it was realy quick , one two uppercut , he didnt even saw it i think. not proud of this tbh , i just swtiched to 'fighting mode' ... but rest of the team had a great fun of him (yea , we can be a$$holes sometimes)
I'll tell you why the linesmen don't break up the fight: Would you want to get between two 6', 200-pound guys tossing punches, often blindly, with the possibility that someone or both of them goes down with their skates flying wildly in the air, ready to slash you open? The answer is no. So, instead what they do is stand back and let the two guys wear themselves out, or they jump in when one player is at a distinct disadvantage to keep him from getting hurt further. A lot of times, two guys in a fight will just agree to stop, being too tired to keep going, anyway. P.S. I have two permanent bridges and am missing 8 teeth, total.
most of the rookies in this video were potential future star players. which is another reason why they were being defended. like you mentioned, some of the hits were clean hits. But when the other team throws a big hit on your star player, clean or not, your teammates are going to make them answer for it.
They absolutely do allow them only stop it when the fight.Seems like it's over or when they fall to the ground. It's just part of the league when you go to a game. The crowd is just ecstatic when they see the fight break out. That is the highlight😂😂😂😂
To me, the worst thing about the fights are the dangerous pieces of equipment that they have those long sticks are very sharp and can make a great weapon in the skates. Oh my God, the skates are razor-sharp and so many guys have lost fingers getting them ran over by skates. And when you're in a scrum with a bunch of guys, you don't know who's hitting?Who from where those little skates are slide around somewhere
Also, what other sport in the world allows you to be frustrated with your opponent? He said something he cut you off. He did something very simple but it p***** you off. That you can then go just punch the s*** out of him and have a fight with him. I think that's a unique ability for the hockey game. I would never play it
Practice sessions for hockey players from high school to college to the semi.Pros to the Bros all have classes and training on how to fight on the rake. The tricks the winning the fight and when and where to fighting is part of the game in this work
Although most teams, everybody will join the end when there is a fight. But all the teams have an enforcer.Or 2 or 3 that starts to fight for their team. They're the rough neck. They're the ones that go in there first and get it on
I once was a great hitter. I’ve hurt more people than I can remember…and of course, retaliation was swift. I fought a lot, wasn’t a beast, but I could do good against some beast only because of the technique I had over most of the giants that would drop the gloves to defend those I’d hurt. I wasn’t a dirty player btw, I played in the 90’s and early 00’s. Back then, hockey was the roughest: people were training like athletes AND playing the man before the puck. Nowadays, hockey got soft. Athletes are everywhere, but the fire and the passion is scarce. It’s healthy, of course, but it’s just not the same sport. We used to play with the mentality that we were going to war. Nowadays, the kids are putting a show. I still love it, but there’s a part of me that think it’s all a big farce.
@AdamCouser please react to Auston Matthews' highlights this past season. Scored 69 goals, the most ever in a season by Leaf. And it broke his own record, 60.
I played goal (not NHL) and only got in one actual fight but I guarantee you there are still many many kidneys bleeding to this day from my blocker punches when they were in the crease after doing a dirtball move my team or me. The refs let the fights go on until someone is down or basically they are tired out because it's a game of self policing. It's almost like the mob. You do something wrong, there's a debt to be paid.
One season I had 82 penalty minutes in 30 or so games. Got kicked out of 2 games and a 3 game suspension. Fighting is inevitable in hockey especially when you’re playing a team more than once. Also typically lower levels of hockey have the most fights (apart from nhl) games are too fast paced.
3:33. A very simplistic explanation and other commentators are welcome to add information. Short version. If you do something bad in european hockey you get 20 games not playing. in NHl you get 5 games, but you will get your face punsched. In European hockey, that is not ok and both players out of the game and more. NHL the players rules alot aswell as the league. That is a big reason to why fighting in NHL is 5min personal while in European it s game 5+20. As a european I see the benefits of both. Hey, if you do something extremey wrong against a rookie(first season player), expect to be punched in the face. But should it be the players or the league??
It's dangerous for the refs to step in while they're throwing bombs. They just wait for them to tire out and beat the shit out of each other before they step in so they don't catch a good one.
As long as the fighting rules are being followed the refs will let them go - stepping in when they go to the ice. They get a major penalty afterwards. As far as the point of the video… if you hit the rookie you’re gonna end up fighting a veteran 😂
I. Hockey the Refs let them fight until either dog pile or 1 player caint defend himself like if u take a player to the ice in a fight they will let it go or if they grab the jersey n pull it over there
This is the only sport I follow anymore. And to be fair, there's more pushing and shoving and jawing than actual fisticuffs but when it does happen, the whole stadium cheers.
@AdamCourser They are all good hits but the reason for the fight is because you dont let someone hit your young superstar... or goalie. Dont ever touch either of them unless you want to fight
I've Played hockey 15 years and I've had 38 fights in Total, with 28 Brutal knock outs to my name in games on ice and 5 draws knock downs in games to The ice. 5 KO's in parking lots after games cause sometimes it never ended on ice, so you always have that one big mouth who acts like an ass after the game who runs his mouth and wants to see what you have until you KO his ass then go home and Relax lol.
I think its the same as boxing for the refs here too u dont wanna catch a hook yourself and u dont wanna give the other guy an advantage, what i know for sure is they lettem go at it till they stop throwing and they fan seperate them 😂
Love the reaction, as usual. A couple things here. I lmao when you say this "American" stuff and call it insane when you know exactly what we're thinking or the guys swinging fists are thinking. We just don't play around. You did that to our rookie, we'll do that to your guy. It's tit-for-tat with Americans. Lemme give a shout to Canadians who created the idea of gentlemanly brutality in the sport. There's an unwritten code in the game and Canadians and Americans, alike, know the code. When somebody breaks it, that's when there's fisticuffs and rightfully so. That's why the refs hold back. They all played hockey too. I played American football, but I showed up to play shit-league hockey that usually turned into stick-time at 11 p.m. because of rink time and lack of players, but we Americans, who played sports and were good, love hockey for the unwritten code of conduct that is occasionally broken and dealt with immediately. It's my favorite sport to watch because of that. We're Americans, we like to fight. So do Canadians, btw ❤

Have had 3 diagnosed concussions (possibly another 2 or 3 that were not diagnosed), 1 hyper-extended knee, one broken rib (from a blocked shot)and one badly broken wrist from getting hit into the boards from behind, was about 6 ft from the boards at contact.
yeah the hits and fights start pretty young. more severe penalties for younger ages, but they still happen a lot
i love how martinook went after seabrook for hitting a guy from behind, and just got beat up for it, seabrook looked unfazed.
My Dad told me that once, he went to a boxing match, and a hockey game broke out.
10:24 lmao I used to play the heck out of that game, and I still have the same reaction you do for the ads😂😂😂😂
To answer your questions
1. too many to count
2. I can't remember my win loss (way to many fights), but I'd guess 50/50
3. Im not missing any teeth from hockey but from baseball
I love how Adam's memory lasts like 1 day if that. Soo many things he already learned in his last rookie vid and fighting vid but hey!
Alright, have you seen videos about Terry O'Reilly? Especially the fight in the stands, but pretty much anything is worth watching.
The rookie is usually the guy that gets crushed originally before the fight
WHEN YOU GO TO THE USA, GO TO A LIVE HOCKEY GAME. EVEN IF IT'S A MINOR LEAGUE GAME.
Being rough with a rookie is the quickest way to the hospital
Adam, please react to the show "Shorsey". I think you'd love it!
You should see it live! It used to be worse in the 80’s. 😂
In high school I almost got in a fight in a hockey game. Last game of my senior season I took a hit to the head from the other team's dirtiest player. I decided not to fight because I was in the running for a $1,000 scholarship and if I got a misconduct penalty then I'd be out of the running. I did get the scholarship so not fighting was the right call lol.
im assuming most of the rookies are the ones getting laid out, and the fights are their team mates getting revenge for them
prior to hockey , i was practicing muay thai for almost a decade + other various martial art sports. the guy didn't knew , beer league , he was pissing me off whole match , once it culminated , i broke his jaw , eye socket and nose... it was realy quick , one two uppercut , he didnt even saw it i think. not proud of this tbh , i just swtiched to 'fighting mode' ... but rest of the team had a great fun of him (yea , we can be a$$holes sometimes)
Does getting highsticked in the nads during a street hockey game count?
YEARS AGO IN NYC I WORKED AT TWO ICE SKATING RINKS AND HAD TO PICK UP FINGERS AFTER PUBLIC SKATING.
How the hell do you forget yer fecking fingers?
Accidentally removed then lost? They can put ‘em back on…. Wow
I'll tell you why the linesmen don't break up the fight:
Would you want to get between two 6', 200-pound guys tossing punches, often blindly, with the possibility that someone or both of them goes down with their skates flying wildly in the air, ready to slash you open?
The answer is no.
So, instead what they do is stand back and let the two guys wear themselves out, or they jump in when one player is at a distinct disadvantage to keep him from getting hurt further. A lot of times, two guys in a fight will just agree to stop, being too tired to keep going, anyway.
P.S. I have two permanent bridges and am missing 8 teeth, total.
If you interview The Spitting Chiclets guys about the unwritten rules of hockey, I will subscribe.
I have a suggestion for a video: you should react to Sprint car crashes
most of the rookies in this video were potential future star players. which is another reason why they were being defended. like you mentioned, some of the hits were clean hits. But when the other team throws a big hit on your star player, clean or not, your teammates are going to make them answer for it.
4:08 both of these guys fighting are veterans at this point. The rookie is number 89 who gets hit in the previous clip
Would love to see you react to group B rally!!
They're the ones that go in there first and get it on
I got four teeth knocked out initially unknown number of concussions but it's a great sport highly recommend🎉
People went to see a fight and a hockey game breaks out
the rookie was the guy who got hit by the guy with his knee out
I once was a great hitter.
Watch some Rob Ray and Tie Domi fight highlights, bro. You won't be disappointed.
Multiple fights in the game, worst one I had was I suspected a guy was a righty and he was a lefty and got a tooth knocked out.
I’ve had like 3 fights at senior level, won 2 lost 1, only one on video is the one I lost😂 dunno if you’ll be arsed just thought I’d share😂
Got in a fight almost every game junior year😬😅, and kinda one with a teammate.
Lost 3 teeth, but to a puck, not a fight. Also got a broken nose and 16 stitches from a high stick
How long did it take you to think of that twitch pitch😅😅😅😅
You should see old time bench brawl
2:02 as they should…hitting the new guys…especially if it’s a big steamroll…that’s uncool, in any sport!!!
The ones that take the initial hit are the rookies
It’s funny Svech used to get hit but now he’s the one hitting them💀
one fight in a camp me vs another short guy and haven't lost any teeth yet
If you've never seen Patrick Kane (formerly of Chicago Blackhawks). He's arguably the best American-born hockey player of all time.
I was watching a boxing match and a hockey game broke out
Fighting is part of the game
It's dangerous for the refs to step in while they're throwing bombs. They just wait for them to tire out and beat the shit out of each other before they step in so they don't catch a good one.
review mitch marner goals, assists, skills
Adam please react to Matt Rempe fights
Because hits are technically legal, fights is how a player or team mate gets back for a nasty or dangerous hit.
New York Ranger Matt Rempe is the exception.... look him up if you don't know!!
As long as the fighting rules are being followed the refs will let them go - stepping in when they go to the ice. They get a major penalty afterwards.
As far as the point of the video… if you hit the rookie you’re gonna end up fighting a veteran 😂
It's all aboot letting a fair fight progress until it's not fair anymore. Then the police should come in and wrap it up.
yesssss more hockeyyyyy!!!!
I. Hockey the Refs let them fight until either dog pile or 1 player caint defend himself like if u take a player to the ice in a fight they will let it go or if they grab the jersey n pull it over there
Love you❤
for context they let them fight until someone falls so the refs don’t just get punched in the face
Look up Enforcers in NHL. Some good vids to react to.
I think its the same as boxing for the refs here too u dont wanna catch a hook yourself and u dont wanna give the other guy an advantage, what i know for sure is they lettem go at it till they stop throwing and they fan seperate them 😂
You going to go to a game great wedding gift
10:29 not yet…😈
