I have the Cinders and it's awesome, it's like Blues Driver but with true bypass, normal switch, backside in/outs and it sounds great. Great for the "almost clean" Andy TImmons style tone.
Yes, those are actually great advantages, you're right - true bypass and top mounted jacks. Certainly helps because it's physically a big pedal too. And it does sound lovely for that kind of stuff - also clearly quite different to the other drives in this video, but it stacks really nicely with all of them too! Cost me €30 used... a total no-brainer! Enjoy yours 🤘

Nice shootout. My favorite was definitely the NUX ‘6ixty5ive. Even with all the controls set at noon, it had the most usable and playable tone. With the others, it seems you had to dial them in more to get an equal to the NUX. The EH Crayon was my 2nd favorite. Between the two the NUX wins.
EHX Crayon circuit really comes into it's own in the EHX Hot Wax dual pedal, where it's paired with the Hot Tubes. Worth saving up a little bit more for that one. It's so good, and such a bargain; a great combination. Graphics are awesome too. Caline Blue Sky is cool too; especially when run off a rechargeable battery.
I'm looking around for a SE DGT... they seem like fantastic guitars! And if they go well with the NUX, that's a win win! I love that pedal :) Cheers and rock on!
Yes, the NUX is fantastic - I think that one will go on to become something of an affordable cult classic, kind of like the Caline Pure Sky. It sounds great however you set it. Same with the Crayon, actually - there's so many usable tones in there, and I love the way it kind of sounds like an amp that's really working hard and sagging for its life as you wind up the gain. Definitely worth a go if you ever see one!
The nux 65 and the tone city durple are my favorites. I will try out these overdrive pedals. The small one is really nice. I think it will be great in my fx loop for some extra drive for solo parts.
Yes, the Durple is surprisingly good (well, maybe not that surprising seeing as Danish Pete had his hand in the design!) but it is surprising at how under the radar that one is. It would certainly work very well for you as an FX Loop boost, for sure! I hope you get to give one a go soon 😎 The NUX as well, actually - this is such a wonderful pedal!
All the drives!!! Between my pod and my katana I don’t “need” more drives. However my board is a wha a whammy and a crap ton of various drive pedals. Its as likely I see an unlikely podcast before I remove a drive pedal from my board. Great examples as always sir. Have a great gain filled weekend Sir 🤘🏽
Yes, it's some kind of healthy addiction, I believe. More drives = more fun! Vlad and I really should get on with that unlikeliest of podcasts, you're totally right...
I use a katana and find the internal drives to sound very digital (because they are) against an analog pedal. I use drive pedals in the front and the Airstep to switch the mod and time fx
Hi Rich, great in depth review of affordable overdrives :) If I didn't have one already, I would have looked at that NUX ‘6ixty5ive for sure. Another affordable pedal I would consider, don't know if you have tried out is the TC Electronic MOJO MOJO. I believe that is under $100 US, I found that through a Paul Gilbert video and I believe he has his own signature series of that overdrive pedal. I have the original one, man does it do wonders for me. As always, thank you for your great work and I hope you have a blessed day Rich!
Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed this one! The Mojo Mojo is a fantastic tip... for years I've heard about how good it's supposed to be, and it's cheap as chips, and yet I've never tried it. And you're right, there is now a Paul Gilbert version too! If it's good enough for him... I need to test one soon! The NUX is a real find, though. Such a great sounding pedal. Cheers for the watch and kind comments, and keep on rocking!
Ooh, that's one I've never seen in person! I really would like to try them all at some point. According to Google, the Black Tea is a Vox-type drive, is that right? Will definitely keep my eye out for one!
@@RichWordsMusic I haven't got enough Vox experience to say, but it's very valve amp like in its response and cleans up really well with the volume knob. There's also a ton of gain on tap :) Currently on sale at Andertons for £39 ;)
I personally would choose the crayon. I've tried the Cinders and it gets too fizzy for me, pretty quickly. The crayon reaches that same issue when you go past 2oclock. I like the crayon when boosted by a klone. Much more than the cinders boosted. Bass to 1ish o'clock, treble to 11 o'clock, drive to 9 o'clock, no gain klone boost and enjoy.
Yes, totally agree! It’s just a great sound - somehow smooth but with rock and roll rawness at the same time, and I agree, it’s lovely in a band context! I can’t believe how cheap they are, really.
I totally agree! That way bargains can be found. And funny you mention the Blood Moon in this context... that's the cheapest pedal I ever bought - €10 on the local used marketplace. And it's really rather nice! I don't use phase too much, but it's a great one to have when I feel the need 😊
I agree! They're both massively underrated pedals... the Crayon I've had for years but I've never met anyone else who owns one, and most people don't even seem to know about it. The 65 is new so it still has time to get more known, but still, it's such an excellent overdrive! These are both great choices for any board, I think.
Yes, it's been delayed I think. The NUX guys told me it was supposed to be here in June, but it's taking a few weeks longer. It will be worth the wait though, trust me! Such a good pedal.

just getting my 3rd Nux 65: crazy good warm jazz tone with a strat, just turn that BASS up!

I got mine when I bought my Dgt
Fantastic video
Well done

That NUX 6ixty 5ive is great across the board. The EHX Crayon sounded really cool as you cranked the gain up too.

Thanks man for the video
Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed it!
If you've not tried the Tone City Black Tea pedal - you really should. It's my favourite by far of their range.
Ooh, that's one I've never seen in person! I really would like to try them all at some point. According to Google, the Black Tea is a Vox-type drive, is that right? Will definitely keep my eye out for one!

this is the best way to show the tone for pedals thanks so much..
Thanks a lot, glad you found it useful! I actually learn a lot about my pedals doing this, so I have to agree ;)
i am waiting for the nux 65 to arrive to my home this week cant wait!!!
I cant decide for the flamma f07 or the cinder or crayon .. wich one is better ?? By the way i love your videos 🤘🏼🤘🏼

The Cinders is one of the smoothest ODs I’ve played. Lacks a bit of the character I look for, but it’s always gonna fit in a mix.
Yes, totally agree! It’s just a great sound - somehow smooth but with rock and roll rawness at the same time, and I agree, it’s lovely in a band context! I can’t believe how cheap they are, really.
Had the Crayon a while back, it was very nice and versatile! Just had too many pedals overall, so...
Yes, that’s a problem I also have! I really need to have a little clear out, but it’s so hard to let go ;)
Regardless of price one should give a pedal a try. My cheap as chips Blood Moon phaser can sound pretty nice.

@@michelvondenhoff9673 Ha ha, it's good to be able to relate 😉 I love a cheap pedal!
Man the Crayon and the 65 sounded amazing here

Unfortunately the Nux 65 is still unavaliable in the most stores in Europe..

👍🏻👍🏻
