    2) Yes , we learn about all this in school. No, no one likes Ceausescu .
    3) The army seeing the whole country is revolting they laid down the weapons . Without any proof or documents after 1 hour they just said enough and executed both of them.
Theres a lot of history and many events. There's a documentary on youtube named " 30 years Since revolution" from recorder's channel. The documentary has english subtitles.

You really need to check up on the fall of communism in Eastern Europe in 1989. Not just in Romania (which was probably the most violent of these revolutions) but also all the other countries, that got rid of their communist leaders within a year. For those of us, who were alive during the Cold War, this was extremely significant and not something we're ever going to forget, but I had hoped that it would also be taught in history classes for the younger generations.

It only lasted a few days but it was very violent. That's how angry/desperate the Romanian people were. Ceausescu and his wife tried to escape Bucharest with a helicopter but were caught in Târgoviște. There was a trial, mostly for show, then they were immediately taken outside, put against a wall and shot. Good riddance.

About one-fifth of the city was bulldozed to build the so-called House of the People, the surrounding buildings, and the grand avenue the leads into the distance from the palace, deliberately made wider and longer than the Champs-Élysee. Forty thousand residents were forcibly rehoused. Some buildings were uprooted and rebuilt in different locations; others remained and now stand at strange angles to the new buildings.

1989 was the year communism fell in most of eastern european countries. While most of them threw their communist regimes peacefully, in Romania close to 1500 people died in a violent revolution that lasted for several days and pretty much ended December 25th with the execution of the Ceausescus in Targoviste, which by the way was Vlad the Impaler`s capital city in the Middle Ages. Ceausescu rulled Romania for almost 25 years and while his regime started with popular reforms and a turn toward the West ( at one point in the 70s Nixon even visited Romania and the country had the Most Favorite Country Clause given by the US) at the end on the 70s he started develloping a personality cult entertaining disastrous ideas like building these massive infrastructures that sapped the country`s budget and the people slowly started turning against him. Like others have mentioned Transylvania is one of Romanias historical regions and home to famous literary evil Count Dracula, a characted loosely based on Vlad Tepes, the Impaler who ruled Wallachia for a short period in the 15th century. I live in Sighisoara and it is common knowledge that Vlad spent part of his childhood here.

I'm glad to see a beginning of differentiation of terms even among young Americans. Unfortunately in the world the examples of communism are all linked to dictatorships but it is the dictatorship that is the serious problem, similar if not worse monstrosities we find in all dictatorships of any political color. Communist parties within democracies have usually fought for good causes but sadly they were often infiltrated or linked to totalitarian regimes in the east. Communism has also generated great philosophers and ideologues and there are many who had an ideal of democratic communism, just think of Trosky or the Italian Gramsci, Trosky was assassinated by order of the PCR. From the point of view of Communism = evil, the former Warsaw Pact countries are the most fierce opponents because it is even easier for them to associate it with the dictatorship they have experienced and suffered, so even among Romanians I believe that the vast majority remember Chiacescu with contempt.

The Avenue des Champs Élysées, also known as the Champs Élysées or colloquially Les Champs, is a boulevard in the French capital of Paris. It is 70 meters wide and 1910 meters long. Located throughout its length in the 8th arrondissement, it begins at Place de la Concorde and ends at Place Charles-de-Gaulle. It forms the middle part of the axis historique between the obelisk (Place de la Concorde) and the Arc de Triomphe (Place Charles-de-Gaulle).
In 1667, under Louis XIV and at the initiative of the minister Colbert, André Le Nôtre designed and built a second promenade further north, parallel to the Cours la Reine. Drawn exactly in the extension of the central avenue of the Tuileries Garden, this Grand-Cours, from which the Champs Elysées emerged, also formed a west-facing visual axis.
In 1724, the garden axis of the Tuileries Garden was connected to the promenade and extended to the Place de l'Étoile (today Place Charles-de-Gaulle).
At the end of the 18th century, the Champs Élysées became very popular, the mature clusters of trees now formed rectangular clearings (cabinets de verdure) and the gardens of the buildings in the Faubourg Saint-Honoré district bordered the park.
At the end of the 19th century, the Champs Élysées became the boulevard and shopping street of aristocratic and upper-class Paris, which is also reflected in buildings such as the Grand Palais, built for the 1900 World Exhibition. The avenue itself has undergone several structural changes, most recently in 1993 when the sidewalks were widened. On July 20, 1975, the Tour de France ended on the famous road for the first time.
In early 2021, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced that she would make the Champs Élysées pedestrian and environmentally friendly by 2030 at a cost of €250 million.

Hello from France again, here we learn at school about the Ceaușescu regime and couple, probably the worst tyrants in europe in recent history, as part of the post ww2 communist / soviet movement. I'm probably a little biased compared to younger generations, as i most certainly saw the 89 Romanian revolution on tv as a kid and the pictures and videos of the execution of the couple.
I'm also a bit surprised that in your modern communist references, you did not mention China, which is to this day the only successful "communist" regime (besides the soviet union, if you consider it a success despite its fall), you could also mention Cuba to a lesser extent, that shows socialism "successes" (free education, free healthcare..) along with its definite communist flaws (organized poverty, absence of individual freedom..).
If you're interested in having a little background about life in the soviet union, i can recommend a video i found not so long ago from a young Ukrainian woman (around 25 today) who interviewed here father about his childhood and early adult life in Soviet Ukraine, it's in russian but the automated subtitles are fairly well translated to english.
    ruclips.net/video/-mNek9acM1g/видео.html (channel Taya Ukraine)
She also has many very nice videos about today's life in ukraine, in the country side.
I should also mention that as expected there's a great deal of Soviet Union memorabilia on youtube and one of the most entertaining youtuber on that subject is certainly that english guy from the channel "Bald and bankrupt", if you've never watched one of his videos i can guaranty you an interesting journey in his twisted soviet fanboy mind.
Jokes aside his videos are very nice, it's a lot about his trip and the (genuine) local people he meets on the street, and he occasionally stumbles upon something soviet (for example he absolutely loves soviet bus stops, train stations, chairs, sinks and bicycles).
Personally i don't really care about that "lost soviet greatness" thing, it's never factual, and is a romanticized view of that era, that has more to do with how you would imagine a lost human civilization, than any thing soviet, but i highly recommend that you watch at least one of his older videos (he stopped making them not long ago but started again and as you can imagine he is no longer traveling russia at the moment, and i think he got banned at some point after being arrested trespassing some space shuttle base).
(ah yes and as mentioned in other comments, the Champs-Élysee, is a reference to Paris main boulevard, and if you're in paris don't bother visiting it, there's really nothing to see, it's mainly a tourist trap, Parisians avoid it as much as they can, although if you get home sick it may remind you of the typical US road with its 6 car lanes, if so do enjoy a french McDonald's burger watching traffic)

There are always people who want to have more than others.
There is always a political system, that gies down to one party, that is expected to do everything right and does not allow any criticism.
As the party never makes a mistake, they even prolong their time in charge, as Putin just changed the law. Before there were only two time in charge as in the US.
May be time is not right for this communism / socialism.
We may have to wait until the time of Star Trek. There the humans do not work to get more, as you can create everything with energy. The people work together to develop, themselves and the community. That is may be a perfect world for socialism.

A point ov view from a romanian born (1990) and living in Bucharest: this phenomena of demolishing entire villages or parts of a city in communist era..., we don't need to learn about this in schools, because it is on our skin. We see this every day (the result), it's our reality: disrupted urban tissue, different buildings of any sizes and styles etc, trying every day to repair or to integrate, parents and grandparents speaking of how good was life before Ceausescu destroied their homes etc. Of course, in the academics is very well studied, in architecture, urban planning, sociology, politics etc. It was the biggest frog that we had to swallow from communists. And we drowned. That's why we shot our "leader". In this part of Europe, in "80s, the bigger the building and mess, the more violent the revolution it was. It was very messy and we today, children of that people, have a lot of work to clean that and fix those cities. Before that building, there was a cozy neighborhood, "Uranus Mahala and Spirea Hill", with old small houses, more or less decorated, more or less luxurious, churches, workshops etc. "Mahala" is a term (turkish origin) that describe a region of a city and a part of a society with a specific occupation. (ex: "Mahalaua Caramidarilor" = "Brickmaker's Neighbourhood"; "caramida" = "brick"). Today the building is pretty well integrated into society, used for parlament and social events, museums, exhibitions etc. Maybe is ugly, but, still can be used. It was build by our parents in final, not by that dictator. Even my dad worked to it. We have to accept it and use it as good as we can.

The name translates to “Elysian Fields” from the Greek mythology, meaning resting place of Greek gods and dead heroes, similar to the Christian paradise.
In 1724, the avenue was extended and acquired its current size and in 1994 the city renovated the street’s sidewalks, improving the Champs-Élysées considerably. Nowadays, its buildings are high-end stores, cafés and offices, ideal for shopping or going for a stroll down one of the most beautiful avenues of the city.

There have been a great variety of "communist" states. Most are various flavors of autocracies or oligarchies dressed up in the clothes of outwardly good intentions. There's an old joke that any state with the terms democratic or people's republic in the name is probably neither, North Korea's hermit state for example is practically on homage to Orwell's 1984.
As for most any for of governance I think it starts to lose stability as population grows in any system. Once our actions start to impact people we don't know an element of accountability gets diluted.

communism is an idea that will never work in practice because at the root it is anti human nature, it requires for humans to acts against their natural instincts. small scale application is doable with low to no diversity, but control to maintain the idea must be forced externally the more scope increases. Which is why most long-term communist regimes are just that - regimes, ruling with fear that is the main control system to maintain the communistic ideas. And that kind of control has hefty price and we have historic evidence there is a limit population at large will always reach before the system crumbles, because humans are clever and will find better way out sooner or later...

Communism as a system is not evil, like at all. In fact its probably the most human system that exists. But Communism has 1 big flaw which is the human factor. In order to make Communism work you need 100% of the people who are in any administrative position to be 100% altruists and this is just impossible. Thats why we say that Communism is just an Utopia and will always, sooner or later fail due to the human aspect of governing.

Simplified, Socialism is a stepping stone towards Communism. Neither ruling systems has been practiced in the modern world. Anarchism though (An ideology closely related to Communism) was practiced fairly successfully in a village in South America for 10-20 years or so.
The principle is basically You don't get to keep what you earn, but you will be provided with what you need.
One could say that Capitalism makes you care about your home, car etc, since you own it, while Communism makes you care about the whole neighborhood, since you in a way owns Stock in it, I mean that's the theory...
Many people gets confused about Communism contra Authoriatism. Authoriatism is when a leader, or group of leaders takes over and corruption becomes rampant, it happens in both left wing and right wing systems. Hitler's Germany, Putin's Russia, N Korea etc are examples of Authoriatism, not Communism.

    • @jbird4478
      @jbird4478 Год назад

That all sounds nice, but ownership also requires decision making. That's where it falls apart. If you collectively own everything (theoretically), you need someone to make decisions over all that you own as a group. And collectively owning your neighborhood doesn't mean a lot if it means you have no control over the house you live in. At the end of the day, control is going to be taken by the most powerful people, whether that is due to pure military might, corruption, or even just popularity. It is essentially the law of the jungle that decides on who that's going to be. And the same is true for anarchism. Both those theoretical systems in practice inevitably lead to authoritarianism.

You're naive. Communism is a noble idea, but it never ever can work in practice, and the explanation, leaving aside ideology, explanations, philosophy, etc., is plain and simple: we are all different, have different goals, different living standard ideals. However, when faced with the idea of having advantages and be "better than thou", no one can refuse irrespective of the level. Communism, therefore, developed a weapon: political police and prison. It ends up the same way, no matter where's applied. That's why I hate those defending the socialist and communist ideas all over the world. Translated into practice it just means they want the better piece of the bone.

Not sure if you guys were even alive during Ceausescu's time. HIs best Christmas present to the people was his suicide on decemer 25, 1989. Lived in the country for a bit, avoided Bucharest as the pest, it is a horrible city, while there are so many nice spots in the country. And I have seen a lot of it, more as many people I dare say. 2 years ago even did a Hike of little over 1100km (way over 622 miles) called the Via Transilvanica, going from the North near the Ukrainian border al the way to the South near the Serbian border.
The political climate has changed and is democratic in some form, though most politicians are still the old communists, just rebranding themselves as socialists, liberals and the like. But still money grabbing corrupt people. Even the DNA (anti-corruption agency) is corrupt like heck. And don't think everything changed for the better, as the Securitate (the old communist secret service) officially ceased to exist after 1989, and thus all files should be open for the public, ongoing files are not open. One wonders how it can be, that there are still open and ongoin files from an organisation that ceased to exeist over 2 decades ago. But I happen to know there are. (don't ask, as I won't tell)
Lynda: don't talk about history. The problem is the different ethnicities. So who wrote the history books, for the schools. In Romania that is a very problematic topic. Let's just say, there are different histories, and it depends on who you want to believe. Bit like Stokers version of Dracula. He makes Grav Tepes III from Transilvania, where as that is historically incorrect. He was from Wallachia, and that county borders Transilvania, but as such is NOT Transilvania.
Brian: theoretically there is nothing wrong with communism. The practical application has proven time and time again, that it is not good for the people at all. Or to quote Animal Farm (On Russian Communism), all are equal, but some are more equal than others. Also Marxism, is just another word for communism. Marx wrote with Engels, the communist manifesto. Hence the name Marxism.
Lynda: if people should like you, than don't go communist. This era, and I think Ceauscu was worse as Gehorghiu-Dej, was not one where you could like anyone. YOu always had to be carefull what you would say, so as to make sure that you would not be reported to the Securitate or send to some sort of work camp. If you want to know a bit more, a very good book I suggest to read -> www.amazon.com/White-King-Novel-Gy%C3%B6rgy-Dragom%C3%A1n/dp/0618945172
The Champs-Elysees, is one of the main, if not most important road/boulevard in Paris. If memory serves created by Napoleon for his army. The wider the road, the easier tit would be for an army to pass through it. It houses the French Government.

Romania has overtaken Portugal and has had fairly constant economic growth since 2000 with a setback after the 2008 crisis. We are 12th in the EU based on GDP out of 27 countries and 44th globally. We are not a poor country by any means. We have a corrupt government and a bloated public servant system that mismanages our resources and a complacent population that refuses to vote.

Transylvania and Muntenia (because the capital - Bucharest) are the most affluent regions.
