I met someone who also likes anime!" At least, according to Sora's videos. I wouldn't know since I've only ever met 1 Japanese person and she thought all anime were only for children.

When you want to tell the teacher a student is using their phone in class, can't find the teacher, then realize you ARE the teacher relates to me so much.
I normally give them 3 seconds to put it in their backpack but if they don't make it in time, I just take their phone away and they can get it back at the end of the day.
Back in the day, not that long ago, they used to just hit the kids in this situation. There are still teachers teaching today in Japan who will tell you that they miss the good old days. At worst they can just make kids stand at their desks as punishment.
As a mix race Asian Aussie I've had so many similar experiences while teaching in Japan. Many students thought English isn't my native tongue and question me about why I don't look like the "typical" English teacher, they also asked me many strange questions including this question a few times "English is from America. How come you speak English and not Australian?" as well as "you are foreigner. Why don't you look like one, with blue eyes and blonde hair, are you really a foreigner?"

I've been teaching in Japan for a few years now, and I remind my students just about every week that I'm actually American and not Japanese. Every year at some point I ask them where I'm from and some of them still say "Japan" 🤦♀

@MrDdz No it's definitely different with food. I've seen many Koreans ran japanese restaurants make Japanese food look mid that I can catch the vibe pretty quickly that it's not run by a Japanese person lol

As a Korean high school student this is so relatable. Everyone wants to self study when exams are near but some people see it as an opportunity to use their phones. And when they're caught? Some of the Japanese teachers and students were really rude and pretty racist to them. I feel like we’re westerners conflate annoying generalizations and stereotypes with racism too much. Annoying stereotype: Americans are all blonde and blue eyed. Racism: Americans are all selfish and wish harm on them all. You see the difference? One is simply misinformed the other is pretty harmful. It’s not good to clump these together in my opinion. Also I would gladly trade Japan’s annoying misinformed naive attitude towards other races any day to the west’s fake dishonest performative script any day. A lot of people in the west don’t actually give a fuck about racism they just like to score internet points by saying the right shit but when they hit the power button on their computer and go to sleep they do absolutely nothing about it. Clacking away at their keyboards for social points is just self serving theatre.

10年前福島県の小さな町で英語の教師のことをしました。あの日小学校の一年生の2人の女の子は私のことが外国人ってについてしゃべっていました。1人の子は私がアメリカ人とわかったので外国人だと言いましたが、その他の子は先生がかわいいなので外国人ではないはずだと言いました。外国人は肌も黒と思いました。外国人は沢山の国から聞いたり多様な格好があったりと説明してやりましたけど、よくわかりませんでした。
