I'm jrf doing phd from Kanpur University. I was so stressed while choosing University. A very insightful information. It's very famous myth that University is everything. I think the downside of top universities is that, the student feel uncomfortable to be in touch with top class professor, and prof are also more busy in top universities. On the contrary, prof in stare university have relatively more time for students. In the era of internet, you can learn from any foreign prof and students, so this will prevent you from the problem of 'less exposure' of state University.
