    In final year of my PhD at IIT-B. Totally relatable yaar all of these experiences are totally relatable. In PhD and in general in research you fail every day there are just 10-15 days in a year when you get that breakthrough success. Other time either you are reading or trying different hypothesis or just analyzing results to dwell deeper. The best thing this does is that it crushes your ego completely. And after a PhD a new version of you emerges only after the older version gets disintegrated. It is indeed a life changing experience and if you are disciplined then it will be fun, if not then you will become disciplined.

    3rd year Computer Science PhD student here. Currently doing my PhD in UK. One thing to keep in mind is that hard work is important but along with that smart work is equally important. Most of the times solution to a problem is very simple you just need to devote time to find that simple solution. Do not hesitate to learn stuff you don't know. Learn it from anyone, your peers or junior or senior. Instead of learning something by yourself if someone already knows it, learn from them. It saves a lot of time.

    The biggest problem is the financial crisis a Ph.D. student goes through during the Ph.D. term except for the institution funded ones.
    The students who pass through multiple highly competitive exams conducted by the funding agencies like DBT, DST, UGC, CSIR, etc. suffer a lot due to untimely release of fellowships, which may be some times delayed by almost a year. And the students are not supported by the institute or their guide too. And when you are already in a stressful journey of a Ph.D. it becomes worse and people suffer from depression and some also leave Ph.D. and join companies or shift abroad for Ph.D.
    And let me tell the fellowships are just sufficient to survive. It is very low considering the hard work and industry standards. Also we don't get increments without fighting for it.
    These are the bitter truth. But we are still doing great and if the finance part is taken care of, then India can be the best in Science. We have the potential but we don't have the support may it be financial or mental.

    • @sg__6
      @sg__6 2 года назад +2

      @@greentomato4632 he said that you should do a phd only if you are excited about it. Timeline should not be your priority. You should not think about when to complete it because that will never happen in reality. Phd takes a lot of presrequisite learning that takes time. So you must enjoy learning. Your focus has to be only and only on learning and enjoying the process and not on how fast you can wrap it up. If you think you're not enjoying, it's better to quit after 1 year. That was more or less a summay of what he said.

It is in this authority, i am saying that the Hindi guy (probably from Bihar) is 100% correct. The early you guide grill, earlier you will be done. Its just the matter of following a routine and think critically. Think a lot on evry line you read in papers. If you will understand things properly, then only u can identify the gaps to be filled in. At last, you have to own a shop. There are customers for both rajnigandha and jubaan keshri. Make sure it reaches to right audience.

      @@arghojitsaha3568 congrats for so many options. Well, you should have proved by this time that you are really interested in astrophysics.
      In any case, it is always possible to go back to astrophysics, but of course the chances become less. You mentioned about the money part, which is equally important. Sometimes you develop love for a subject, only after you achieve something in that. This is mostly true in CSE/ECE engineering program, as far as I have seen. My friends too have many interest earlier in their lives, but most if them just regret it only verbally. They are happy with the money they make. This happiness is a relative term here. You can pursue your astrophysics as hobby. The other way too is fine, but not preferable in case of job opportunities.
      In any choice, remember there will be ups and downs throughout.
      So, please make sure you don't feel stuck after any decision. Make sure you not only fantasize about astrophysics but really care about it. Caring about it means you have to solve a real problem later on in that area, not only just studying and knowing what exists.
      Remember you can't love all the subjects and grow your profile in them concurrently. 😀 This is a truth needs to be accepted here.
      PS- my answer is not organised as you may notice. Sorry for that.

    4th year CS PhD student here from USA. PhD provides the liberty to study on your own but that is both good and bad. The good part is that you can explore new things on your own and work on different research problems simultaneously. The bad part is most of those projects will fail and you will loose time dedicated to them but you will learn a lot about the pitfalls and avoid them in the future. One advice I would like to give is to pursue multiple projects through collaborations so that even if you are stuck in one of them you can get rid of your stress and anxiety by progressing in the other projects. Indian PhD students tend to work only with their supervisor in the lab. Try to build connections by working with others outside the lab. I know that building collaborations is tough but you can start off by collaborating with fellow labmates/postdocs, researchers from the same institute or even researchers from the same country who know about your work a little bit. Once you have established yourself people would love to collaborate with you provided you are leading the project.

Though I am from computational chemistry background my area of research is based on machine learning. So I guess theoretical physicists do use machine learning and deep learning for their research. Anyway machine learning is now widely used in many research areas.

    First of all stop calling PhD as students, this is not a college degree where u study and get marks, pass and get degree. PhD is a full time research work which is as good as a job where u r paid a stipend. So better call them as scholars or researchers, student sounds unprofessional.
